Jonathan Williams (ex machina), Monday, 9 December 2002 17:06 (twenty-two years ago)

My list of very usual and expected suspects:

MBV (well, duh)
Marc Almond (and Soft Cell!)
The Chameleons (and Mark Burgess solo)
The Smashing Pumpkins, several different times
The Cure
Depeche Mode
Tool
Radiohead (saw the last three within a week of each other summer 2001 -- good week!)
Legendary Pink Dots
Swans
Paik
Landing
Spacious Mind
Kinski
Windy and Carl
Roy Montgomery
Jane's Addiction
Nine Inch Nails

etc. etc. etc. this list would run on forever for me, I think. But I must not forget various incarnations of Celesteville and Yak Brigade. And Di and Duane. :-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 9 December 2002 17:12 (twenty-two years ago)

Hmmm...

Merzbow last Friday.
Milford Graves a couple years ago at the Empty Bottle.
Test at the Velvet Lounge.
Fennesz, O'Rourke, Rehberg at the Empty Bottle, June '98.
Kraftwerk, June '98.
Shellac/Uzeda/dis- on my 20th birthday, '95.
Er, uh...
Caroliner at some shitty dive bar, '99 (?).
some others.

hstencil, Monday, 9 December 2002 17:12 (twenty-two years ago)

someone was telling me about the saturday merzbow show.... some dude asked Masami what a particular piece of equipment did.

"that's the surge protector"

Jonathan Williams (ex machina), Monday, 9 December 2002 17:22 (twenty-two years ago)

HAHAHAHA! That's funny!

I didn't get to see what he played, but I assumed it was just a laptop or something. Wish I could've gone Saturday, to see Borbetomagus (one of my favorite bands whom I've never seen).

hstencil, Monday, 9 December 2002 17:25 (twenty-two years ago)

Borbetomagus = guitar and horns? i think someone mentioned them to me as being really good there?

I was told he used a bunch of iPods and petals. I'm also told that one of my songs sounds like some Merzbow.

This show suppsoedly sounded like lots of whirring machines!

Jonathan Williams (ex machina), Monday, 9 December 2002 17:28 (twenty-two years ago)

I've done this before, but:

Mogwai
Spiritualized
Zen Guerilla
Melt Banana
Carl Cox
Echo & Bunnymen
Jonathan Richman
John Cale

(and surprisingly these are all shows where I was in the front row.)

A Nairn (moretap), Monday, 9 December 2002 17:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Lots of Whirring Machines = best live act ever

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Monday, 9 December 2002 17:28 (twenty-two years ago)

oh shit add DJ Shadow to mine!

Jonathan Williams (ex machina), Monday, 9 December 2002 17:29 (twenty-two years ago)

P.Funk. Just a couple of months ago. Damn.

Matt C., Monday, 9 December 2002 17:32 (twenty-two years ago)

Borbeto = Jim Sauter and Don Dietrich (horns) and Donald Miller (guitar).

DJ Shadow was pretty okay when I saw him, but went on a little long and had a proclivity for really goofy stage banter (oddly enough).

hstencil, Monday, 9 December 2002 17:33 (twenty-two years ago)

DJ Shadow's video show behind him was great. I had maybe 6 drink in me and had such a terrific time.

Most of his on stage banter was about all the different equipment he was using.

Jonathan Williams (ex machina), Monday, 9 December 2002 17:34 (twenty-two years ago)

the modey lemon

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Monday, 9 December 2002 17:36 (twenty-two years ago)

Merzbow last Friday.

You were there? Damn, so was I!

hstencil, Monday, 9 December 2002 18:13 (twenty-two years ago)

I was at the Borbetomagus/Merzbow show on Saturday. I jotted down a few notes about it on my blog.

o. nate (onate), Monday, 9 December 2002 18:16 (twenty-two years ago)

Nice review. I wrote mine in about 5 minutes or so (if it wasn't obvious).

I'm sure I'm forgetting some big 'uns.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Monday, 9 December 2002 18:28 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm sure to forget some, especially since I saw a lot more live music ten years ago, or so, than I do now.

Steve Reich
Sun Ra Arkestra (w/ and w/out Sun Ra)
Psychic TV
Butthole Surfers
RUIN [pretty local, long defunct]
Scram [ditto]
Hassan Hakmoun
Dimi Mint Aba
Houria Aichi
[A trance music ensemble from Baluchistan whose name I forget]
Neil Young
Tish Hinojosa [the first couple times, anyway)
Diamanda Galas
George Wassouf [just for the thrill of seeing a real Arabic pop star, and drinking lots of arak]

That's all I can think of at the moment.

Rockist Scientist, Monday, 9 December 2002 18:47 (twenty-two years ago)

brain forgetting.

sun ra's arkestra
jenny toomey and geoff farina ('98?)
john zorn's masada

arab on radar, lightning bolt, the locust, quest for quintanaroo ('00 at cocodrie, sf r.i.p.)
avey tare and panda bear and black dice and new faggot cunts
half-handed cloud, soul junk, deerhoof, and brother danielson in his nine fruit tree

harry pussy, smog, and sebadoh
tortoise and oval... '99?
hot snakes '00
burning spear
smashing pumpkins and chainsaw kittens '92
unrest and slant 6
flaming lips and enon '00

bah... a person could go on and on... i can't even remember half the shows... brain, why must you fail me at such a young age?

msp, Monday, 9 December 2002 19:00 (twenty-two years ago)

The Absolute Best:
Yo La Tengo - Last December, I found $100 on the floor! Oh - good show, too!

dave225 (Dave225), Monday, 9 December 2002 19:02 (twenty-two years ago)

Some of the ones I'm most ashamed of leaving out previously...

Spearhead/Digable Planets
Spearhead/311
Rusted Root (before the small "Primal Scream" singin' girl left)
Beck/Hank Williams III
Prince (only 60$ ticket that's been worth it so far)
Junior Brown
Bela Fleck and the Flecktones
VHS or Beta (best band-at-a-rave EVAH!)

nickalicious (nickalicious), Monday, 9 December 2002 19:14 (twenty-two years ago)

VHS or Beta

Homiez of mine from just up I-64 from you, nickalicious.

hstencil, Monday, 9 December 2002 19:16 (twenty-two years ago)

Clash at the Cape Cod Coliseum in 1982
Replacements (moderately sober) at the Living Room, Providence, in 1985

Worst show: Replacements (decidedly drunk) at the Living Room, in 1986

Most memorable: Beat Farmers at the Living Room 1985 or 86. Country Dick, rest his soul, got on top of some guy's shoulders. The guy felt down, Country Dick fell down. With fire in his eyes, he got on top of the bar and started beating the ceiling lamps with a riding stick. He also cut his hand on a beer bottle, went to a hospital emergency room after the show and then skipped out on the bill (so he told the crowd at a show years later).

Jim M, Monday, 9 December 2002 19:20 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh. My. GOD. Queen G, did you really see Wa Wa Nee? Because I'm now DYING FROM JEALOUSY.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 9 December 2002 22:31 (twenty-two years ago)

Yo La Tengo - On the I Can Hear... tour. There was a problem with the club's sound so the band felt it couldn't do its planned set justice. Instead, YLT kind of treated it like its New Year's Eve shows, inviting suggestions from the audience. Played a lot of old stuff and some cool covers.

Neil Young.
Wilco/Old 97s - Summerteeth tour.
Grifters/Blonde Redhead
Half Japanese
Pixies/My Dad is Dead
Nihilist Spasm Band with guests at the No Music Festival in London, ON

Ritchie Hawtin-Detroit 00 at DEMF
Cibo Matto-Detroit 01, free at chene park amphitheatre

Detroit Cobras

webcrack (music=crack), Monday, 9 December 2002 23:08 (twenty-two years ago)

SLEATER-KINNEY! SLEATER-KINNEY! (Sorry I've been saying that a lot lately, must be Tourette's or something.) Polly Harvey is also somewhere in this league.

B.Rad (Brad), Monday, 9 December 2002 23:21 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm think I should add Sleater-Kinney to my list. I was pretty disappointed when I went out and bought Dig Me Out after seeing them live, but I would go seem them play again, because when I saw them they put on a great show. I just would want to preview any CD (in its entirety) before buying it.

Rockist Scientist, Tuesday, 10 December 2002 02:46 (twenty-two years ago)

one year passes...
Revive?

Rockist Scientist, Wednesday, 7 January 2004 01:13 (twenty-one years ago)

this is the very top, if I can narrow it down.

Belle and Sebastian, 10/30/98 at the Black Cat (DC) (well it was a big deal at the time...)
Magnetic Fields 7/99 Black Cat
Shannon Wright/Mick Turner 11/02 Khyber in Philly
Carla Bozulich, 3/03 Phoenix
Sigur Ros, 4/03 Tempe
Shannon Wright/Dirty Three, Austin 4/03

I guess I saw a lot of good shows last year.

Neko Case was freaking awesome this past weekend, too.

Blood and sparkles (bloodandsparkles), Wednesday, 7 January 2004 02:17 (twenty-one years ago)

Mott the Hoople. Pure chaos tethered by liqour and tune.

Bowie, Diamond Dogs. Last night of LA stand, he was so coked out and blatherous Luther had to carry him off stage, Angie freaking in the second row.

Roxy, the tour where Bryan wore military stuff. Manazanra played Diamond Head and I had a cow.

Diamonda Galas at some gay dive in Brooklyn, divas shreiking at The Plague Mass.

mel Torme at Joe's Pub.

Low at mercury Lounge: I could hear a guy lighting a Bic.

Every RAMMS+EIN show, of course, but especially when they did Pet Sematary as encore with Johnny, Marky and a guy from The Misfits.

oooof, sorry to post so many -- i swear that was the short list too, since many of those years i went out 4-5 nights a week, seeing at least 3 acts in a given night, every week...

whatever, i'm fucking deaf now, and will surely develop cancer from the second-hand smoke!
