Mego release. Is this the new pop or old news?

dleone (dleone), Friday, 13 December 2002 14:50 (twenty-two years ago) link

It's much more amorphous feeling than her previous stuff. Like she began to write some songs but went way far out on a daydream tangent and left it at that. She's really good at capturing the moment where exhaustion and bliss come together. Her "glitch" aesthetic is also remarkably warm, I always imagine anthropomorphic computers/toys/microwaves singing along like in a 30's cartoon.

Of interest, I saw that Musique Machine have an interview with Tujiko Noriko.

I still can't be sure. I bought it a few weeks ago, and a few of the songs are very nice... but for some reason, I really don't feel like hearing it again.

OCP (OCP), Saturday, 14 December 2002 00:21 (twenty-two years ago) link

I like what I've heard from her before. What should I download from the new album?

My thoughts. Excuse the poor writing.

I find her lyrics a tad twee for my tastes but the music is great!

nabisco's pitchfork review of her new record says this is her first record, i'm thinking it's her 3rd or 4th.

gygax! (gygax!), Friday, 25 July 2003 14:03 (twenty-one years ago) link

Hmm, Make Me Hard wasn't even her first record on Mego. She had one CD prior (Shojo Toshi), as well as a 12". I believe she had one Japanese only release as well prior to her first Mego CD.

dleone (dleone), Friday, 25 July 2003 14:09 (twenty-one years ago) link

First full-length, I think I said -- I didn't fact-check this super-rigorously, but from what gathered (beyond just the AMG), the prior releases weren't LP-format.

nabisco (nabisco), Friday, 25 July 2003 14:31 (twenty-one years ago) link

Obviously I have not been able to find them, so I had to rely on discography descriptions. If they were wrong (and I trust Leone on this), sorry for the misinformation!

nabisco (nabisco), Friday, 25 July 2003 14:32 (twenty-one years ago) link

Shojo Toshi is definitely a full-length release. The title of her first CD is Keshou To Heitai (read at Forced Exposure), and is apparently full-length too -- never seen it though.

dleone (dleone), Friday, 25 July 2003 14:44 (twenty-one years ago) link

there is her new one coming out on tomlab which i've yet to receive in the post - apparently it's less glitch & more pop which doesnae seem like to bad an idea w/ tujiko. overexcited about that perhaps possibly

bob snoom, Friday, 25 July 2003 14:48 (twenty-one years ago) link

Noriko is now looking accusingly at me from her album cover. (If I turn it over, she has her eyes closed like she doesn't even want to see me anymore.) Ah, well: oops!

nabisco (nabisco), Friday, 25 July 2003 14:54 (twenty-one years ago) link

I wrote one, too!

It is a bit twee, but basically I really liked the combination of a nice poppy voice against laptop textures. And Pita as Phil Spector is great, as imaginary as it may be. I'm excited for the new one.

Is the Bjork's little sister view just unavoidable?

i love this cd. i want more like it. Sylvian's Blemish is all i can think of. anyone else?

JaXoN (JasonD), Tuesday, 10 August 2004 17:51 (twenty years ago) link

gygax, did you ever figure out which Terre Thaemlitz cd you were talking about?

JaXoN (JasonD), Tuesday, 10 August 2004 17:53 (twenty years ago) link

I'm listening to this album by the band DILL, which is kind of a more abstract version of what Tujiko Noriko does. Lots of collage-effect production with electronics, but same pretty melodies over top.

dleone (dleone), Tuesday, 10 August 2004 18:01 (twenty years ago) link

oh yeah, there's this band 1-0 that sounds kinda like this too. ;)

JaXoN (JasonD), Tuesday, 10 August 2004 18:24 (twenty years ago) link

I heard 1-0 was a cute japanese girl

dleone (dleone), Tuesday, 10 August 2004 18:33 (twenty years ago) link

JaXoN (JasonD), Tuesday, 10 August 2004 18:42 (twenty years ago) link

sigh

dleone (dleone), Tuesday, 10 August 2004 18:51 (twenty years ago) link

ok this is the greatest artist of all time

ivy., Tuesday, 24 December 2024 16:57 (one week ago) link

heard my ghost comes back for the first time a few days ago, shook me to my core, unable to listen to anything else, the music feels so slippery yet so in pocket

and every tujiko album i've heard since has been like just as much of a masterpiece? currently listening to gyu, the pop album she made with tyme., and last night i listened to the collab with nobukazu takemura, east facing balcony. just consistently amazing music that is never not as direct as it is unconventional

ivy., Tuesday, 24 December 2024 17:00 (one week ago) link

been a minute but I used to listen to gyu a lot, especially "tropic penguin". think it's time to go deeper, starting with a my ghost... revisit!

For me too, I should dig out the collab '28', I love that record.

I adore her, but I'm realising there's a lot of material I've never heard! I shall join you all in more Tujiko Noriko listening.

Seconding the love for Crepuscule. One of those soundworlds that seems to swell and mutate as you move through it.

I would prefer not to. (Chinaski), Sunday, 29 December 2024 14:50 (five days ago) link

love the kuro soundtrack too - its, well, _dark_

has anyone seen the movie? sounds really cool
