Because this record is one of this year's BEST and deserves it's own thread.

Details please!

From the Fatcat site: "Aoki and Tujiko’s collaboration began in 2002 when they were both booked the same event for The Cartier Foundation in Paris, got talking and began working together on the track ‘Fly’ for the first time. As they worked, it quickly dawned that they both really liked what they were doing and so decided to extend the project to an album-length collaboration. Yet following that show, the pair found little time to work together because Aoki was at the time living in Osaka whilst Tujiko was in Paris. As a way around this problem, they began sending their audio files to each other as CDRs, working separately on ideas and then sowly building their tracks bit by bit. Consequently, it took a long time to finish this album, although the process sped up when Aoki also moved to Paris just under a year ago.

Whilst this album marks the first time the pair have worked together on a recording, AOKI has previously released four albums on the Japanese-based Progressive Form label and one on Cirque. Somewhat better known to European audineces, Noriko has released albums on Mego, Sub Rosa, Tomlab, all of which have received glowing and considerable coverage. Aoki and Tujiko have already played together as a live duo a number of times, including Fondation Cartier in Paris 2002, Sonar Festival in Barcelona in 2003, Prague and Italy in 2003 and Toulouse 2004. We hope to be setting up some new European shows for the pair in the near future."

I'll post my thoughts later...I haven't been able to put my love into words just yet.

Something tells me 28 would make Momus feel rather randy.

Raymond Cummings (Raymond Cummings), Tuesday, 2 August 2005 16:48 (twenty years ago)

you know there is another noriko record coming out on room40 (http://www.room40.org) in august?

John Chantler, Tuesday, 2 August 2005 16:54 (twenty years ago)

Anybody have this on Soulseek?

YSI?

Patrick South (Patrick South), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 02:53 (twenty years ago)

I've met Tujiko Noriko and she's not my type at all, rather trollopy in furs and heels. But I appreciate her a lot as an artist, so let's amend that to "artistically randy", shall we?

Boomkat says: 'Beguiling, filligrane electronic song-structures' seems a good (if not totally cack-mouthed) way of summing up the Aoki Takamasa & Tujiko Noriko sound. Delicate to the MAX, '28' is full of utterly charming, lilting electronica, augmented throughout by Noriko's delicate Japanese vocals; with a result that would fail to enrapture all but the most craggy hearted individuals. Takamasa and Noriko certainly know their onions; taking dreamy soundscapes and under wiring with a crisp formation of electronic buttresses that compliment each other like a Heston Blumenthal dish. Ranging from the 'Vespertine'-esque 'Vinyl Words' and poptastic styling of 'Alien', through to the juddering symphony of album closer 'Nolicom', this is a genuine treat which won't spoil your appetite. Lovely.

But I still want Raymond's thoughts :/

fandango (fandango), Friday, 19 August 2005 19:51 (twenty years ago)

is there any record store that i could get 28 (in melb or adelaide)?

Still curious...

Yeah. Let's hear them!
I'm imagining something like a slightly more precious 'Berlinette'.
Am I OTM?

Baaderonixx ménage ses forces dans l'attente du Grand Soir (baaderonixx), Thursday, 17 November 2005 15:27 (twenty years ago)

this record has become one of my favourites of the year. its quite beautiful. i've no idea what 'Berlinette' is though.

zappi (joni), Thursday, 17 November 2005 15:39 (twenty years ago)

it's a pop-glitch Ellen Alien album

Baaderonixx ménage ses forces dans l'attente du Grand Soir (baaderonixx), Thursday, 17 November 2005 15:47 (twenty years ago)

I must admit the samples I heard put me off this, seemed a little boring tbh. I'd be surprised if this had anything like the pop replayability of "Berlinette" (It's by Ellen Allien, from 2003. Thread here - der blick, ein click.. ellen allien 'berlinette') but I could be wrong.

(preview, what Baaderonixx said)

Slooshy sloshy slooshy sloshy (fandango), Thursday, 17 November 2005 15:48 (twenty years ago)

oh. i've always been put off by Ellen Alliens name, i'll go and check some out. oh and '28' isnt really pop, Slooshy.

zappi (joni), Thursday, 17 November 2005 15:54 (twenty years ago)

do check it out - it's pretty great, as is her latest, 'Thrills", albeit in a very different style.
is it twee and precious and reminiscent of a laptop Joanna Newsom? Cause that's how I imagine '28'...

Baaderonixx ménage ses forces dans l'attente du Grand Soir (baaderonixx), Thursday, 17 November 2005 15:57 (twenty years ago)

no, on this record Tujiko has toned down her MiniMeBjorkisms a lot, most of the songs are quite slow, and sound to me like a glitchy version of the slow tracks from The Blue Niles 'Hats'! maybe thats just me though...
(ive been trying to set up a YSI, but it seems to be broken?)

zappi (joni), Thursday, 17 November 2005 16:08 (twenty years ago)

my review will appear in the next issue of grooves; unfortunately i don't have a copy handy to cut and paste. i WILL say that I still love this record and it's in my top 5 for the year.

Raymond Cummings (Raymond Cummings), Thursday, 17 November 2005 16:36 (twenty years ago)

Ok so I got this. It's taking a long time to sink in

My life with Baaderonixx and the Choco-pops babies (Fabfunk), Thursday, 24 November 2005 09:37 (twenty years ago)

I played this record constantly in August, and wrote about it here, calling it "singing vagina music" (the highest praise). Haven't listened to it since then, must dig it out again and dig it again.

Momus (Momus), Thursday, 24 November 2005 09:56 (twenty years ago)

I'm stuck somewhere between feeling this is rewardingly challenging and ultimately directionless. I've loved the Tujiko stuff from the past, but haven't just fallen in love with this like I had so hoped to. Anybody else feeling this way?

Count me in. Intriguing but ultimately a bit dull
