bob zemko (bob), Friday, 13 December 2002 22:46 (twenty-two years ago)

no wave chick. effect on career of marrying guy from mars was nougatory

bob zemko (bob), Friday, 13 December 2002 22:49 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm not old, but I've got one of the records on Ze. It's pretty good, got a weird disco cover of Arthur Brown's "Fire." Def. could see this being more known in the current NYC electroclash/nowave/disco/fashionbullshit climate, which is funny 'cause you used to be able to find this for like a dollar or less.

hstencil, Friday, 13 December 2002 22:50 (twenty-two years ago)

ok now, you have to acknowledge the nougatory joke if yr coming on this thread

bob zemko (bob), Friday, 13 December 2002 22:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Can't acknowledge a joke I don't get, sorry.

hstencil, Friday, 13 December 2002 23:02 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm old, I never bought it, I heard it was crappy. She was very cute, though. Had a certain sapphic appeal, hung out with Patti Smith a lot. Nougatory, good buddy.

Arthur (Arthur), Friday, 13 December 2002 23:10 (twenty-two years ago)

which do you have h? press color?

bob zemko (bob), Friday, 13 December 2002 23:16 (twenty-two years ago)

uh, the one with her picture on the front?

hstencil, Friday, 13 December 2002 23:18 (twenty-two years ago)

that's the one

bob zemko (bob), Friday, 13 December 2002 23:19 (twenty-two years ago)

There's a picture of her in Patti Smith's "Babel"...

Sean (Sean), Friday, 13 December 2002 23:59 (twenty-two years ago)

Disco cover of "Fire" is in fact pretty darn good. If memory serves, she did a not-quite-as-good version of "La Poupée Qui Fait Non."

Douglas, Saturday, 14 December 2002 03:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Her second album, eponymously "Lizzy Mercier Descloux," got heard by few in the US, but it's my hands-down favorite in the white-people-make-records-in-Africa genre. She had a kick-ass band, and it loosened her up. That French thing of zooming back and forth between croon and harangue just reverberates off the elastic beat.

Cisco Nashville, Saturday, 14 December 2002 03:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Cristina, another ZE disco heavy-breather, is probably who did the "La Poupee" you're thinking of.

Mambo Nassau's easily my favorite old record just heard this year.

Somebody please peel me off this wall.

Andy K (Andy K), Friday, 21 November 2003 19:41 (twenty-one years ago)

ooh i like her

disco donut (Jody Beth Rosen), Friday, 21 November 2003 19:42 (twenty-one years ago)

sadly, lizzy is very, very ill. say a little prayer for her (if you pray).

stirmonster, Friday, 21 November 2003 19:44 (twenty-one years ago)

if you can't find the records i can't say enough good things about the Mutant Disco compilation reissue. at first i was cheesed out about paying 32 bucks for a 2cd set, but it's been two weeks now and i haven't even got to the second disc yet. i can't get over the garcons tracks but the LMD tracks are the business, too (and the material track and cristina and kid creole...)

Wow, I am so saddened by this if it is true. RIP. Mambo Nassau is brilliant album and one of my all-time faves.

Michael F Gill (Michael F Gill), Monday, 26 April 2004 04:35 (twenty-one years ago)

rip lizzy. thank you for the joy.

stirmonster, Monday, 26 April 2004 07:30 (twenty-one years ago)

Like others on this thread, I only discovered Mambo Nassau on its recent reissue and was totally blown away, as noted on this thread:
S&D: Ze Records

I haven't seen any official confirmation, but if these reports true, this is very sad news. RIP

Jeff W (zebedee), Monday, 26 April 2004 15:16 (twenty-one years ago)

yes, it's true, sadly enough; i heard about it from one of her relatives.

geeta (geeta), Monday, 26 April 2004 16:40 (twenty-one years ago)

RIP. Just found out on Simon R's blog.

Nothing of hers should really be destroyed at all, but Mambo Nassau >> Suspense = Press Color >> One for the Soul >> s/t, and the latter's not bad at all!

Ian Riese-Moraine eats nation-states for breakfast! (Eastern Mantra), Saturday, 25 June 2005 15:06 (twenty years ago)

hm, this is another one i tried out and just couldn't really get into... without actively disliking. there seem to be a lot of recent threads about musicians that inspire this reaction in me....

Amateur(ist) (Amateur(ist)), Saturday, 25 June 2005 15:20 (twenty years ago)

just bought Press Color and am mightily impressed and grooving. ignored her the first time around, as Arthur mentions upthread she was widely panned as a poseur. they never learn.

m coleman (lovebug starski), Saturday, 25 June 2005 15:21 (twenty years ago)

the mambo nassau reissue was being pushed really hard in this one paris record store, so i bought it. it was ok, i guess. maybe i should hear "press color"? M.N. sort of seemed to me like a theoretically interesting mashup of lots of different styles that didn't really find a coherent or compelling identity of its own.

Amateur(ist) (Amateur(ist)), Saturday, 25 June 2005 15:22 (twenty years ago)

> "Funky Stuff" is pretty much the best song ever.

hstencil OTM. As Lizzy herself says, "EES ZO MOCH FON!"

Palomino (Palomino), Saturday, 25 June 2005 15:49 (twenty years ago)

xpost

Press Color sounds more consistent (haven't heard M.N.) It's half spikey late 70s funk/rock (more Material than Contortions) and half punk-y guitar & voice throwdowns plus one Bill Laswell-produced track from 95 that features Patti Smith in a duet/recitation. S'OK.

m coleman (lovebug starski), Saturday, 25 June 2005 15:50 (twenty years ago)

Wow, I'd prefer Mambo Nassau over Press Color anyday. But I have my biases.

Michael F Gill (Michael F Gill), Saturday, 25 June 2005 16:40 (twenty years ago)

Mambo Nassau to me is just this wonderful kaleidoscopic pop album that makes me happy as all get out. Her enthusiasm's addictive and the electro-tropical-disco-funk's just luscious and sounds fantastic. The only other album to provoke a similar reaction (in regard to makine me extraordinary gleeful) would be Scritti Politti's Songs to Remember.

One For The Soul and Suspense will be reissued by ZE later this year, along with a "lost album" of material.

Just picked up the "Zulu Rock" (aka s/t) reissue and it's so great. Recorded in South Africa, a sandwich of pop, African highlife and reggae....

Michael F Gill (Michael F Gill), Saturday, 6 May 2006 18:32 (nineteen years ago)

And don't forget the Rosa Yemen reissue! Though I'm wondering what that's going to contain, as I thought all of RY's recorded output was collected on the Press Color reissue. Live stuff, maybe?

el cosa teléfono, Saturday, 6 May 2006 20:03 (nineteen years ago)

Revive a bit -- I'll be reviewing the Best Off compilation for the AMG, but as my copy is a promo one I'm not sure which of the tracks on it are the three unreleased ones, as I want to give particular attention to them in the review. Any help? Much thanks. The tracklisting is:

01 • Fire • 5:11
02 • Torso Corso • 1:49
03 • Mission Impossible 2.0 • 2:18
04 • Hard-Boiled Babe • 4:22
05 • It's You Sort Of • 2:15
06 • Sun is Shinning • 2:19
07 • Les baisers d’Amants • 3:50
08 • Five Troubles Mambo • 2:12
09 • Pénélope • 3:27
10 • Wakwazulu Kwezizulu Rock • 2:59
11 • Mais où sont passées les gazelles ? • 3:11
12 • Abyssinia • 3:02

14 • One for the Soul • 3:48
15 • My Funny Valentine • 3:52

21 • Rouge Gorge • 3:08

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 26 May 2006 15:35 (nineteen years ago)

The last three tracks. I assume these will also be on the unreleased Lizzy album that ZE is putting out in the Fall.

Michael F (Michael F Gill), Friday, 26 May 2006 16:30 (nineteen years ago)

I thought as much, but was not sure. Thank ya sir.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 26 May 2006 16:35 (nineteen years ago)

First 4 tracks are from the "Press Color" reissue, 5-8 are from "Mambo Nassau" reissue, 9-12 are from "Zulu Rock" reissue, 13-15 are from "One For The Soul", 16-17 from "Suspense," and 18 is most likely the b-side of the vinyl single of the same name and will probably be added to one of the remaining lizzy reissues on Ze.

Funny how it doesn't include what is most likely her quintessential track - "Funky Stuff"

Michael F Gill (Michael F Gill), Friday, 26 May 2006 16:40 (nineteen years ago)

Best Off is one of the best I've heard this year, so very Top Ten.Ze site still Under Construction, so dig we must (nice bio on AMG).

Is it Fog Horn Blues? Don't know that one, but it's in Amazon Download Store (which I've so far had no probs at all with, def incl prices) Also a recent EP. Here's a microview/celebration of her reissues: "Liquor For The Soul"

Spoke to loads of people about her for this piece a couple of years ago http://pitchfork.com/features/from-the-pitchfork-review/9828-lizzy-mercier-descloux-behind-the-muse/

I just found an original copy of One for the Soul in The Last Bookstore. Never seen an original in the wild before.

snake, Monday, 1 May 2017 10:47 (eight years ago)

Cool article! Glad to see someone is writing a biography of LMD, and that you also agree that "Mambo Nassau" is her apex. I would quibble that when she passed away in 2004, it might have been one of the few times she wasn't completely obscure---ZE had just reissued all her records on CD for the first time.

Suspense and One For The Soul have grown on me lots--combine the highlights of both records and it's as great as any of her other lps. Her exuberance still inspires.
