where's kate when we need her most?

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Thursday, 2 January 2003 20:49 (twenty-two years ago) link

If Electralane is drone rock then i guess you should get their album.

_gibby_, Thursday, 2 January 2003 20:55 (twenty-two years ago) link

Search: all of it (this might be a lie).

I think we've had a thread on it before, but I'll just say right now that you start by putting the entire Spacemen 3 and Loop back catalogues on infinite repeat. From there, explore both forward and backward in time.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 2 January 2003 20:59 (twenty-two years ago) link

there's enough Kate there for a lifetime!

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Thursday, 2 January 2003 21:08 (twenty-two years ago) link

NO. When The Levee Breaks is as dronerock as my fucking ass. (OK, my ass is pretty dronerock, but fuck NO!)
Hilarity ensues.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Thursday, 2 January 2003 21:12 (twenty-two years ago) link

dammit, i wrote a really long and comprehensive and funny reply to this thread, and the goddamn browser ate it all. and now it's hours later and i've forgotten everything i said, except...

search: the rocket girl tribute to spacemen 3. some of the finest modern dronerock going pays tribute to the greatest dronerock band ever

destroy: nothing. all dronerock is inherently good. except for... the evil kate radley, and fake dronerock, i.e. BRMC: the stereophonics of dronerock.

kate, Friday, 3 January 2003 03:31 (twenty-two years ago) link

Yes, search Arab Strap's cover of "Revolution", it's lovely. Also search early Lilys and Bowery Electric (Kate, you're gonna say they're not dronerock aren't you...well yer wrong!).

Destroy: the last Dandy Warhols album, which it's taken me two years to realise is actually rubbish.

Charlie (Charlie), Friday, 3 January 2003 03:59 (twenty-two years ago) link

kate, i'm surprised you like that rocketgirl comp, i didnt like it at all, i was very disappointed by it. it should have been good, but i dont think any of the tracks clicked with me

as to my own recommendations, i'm sure they're all on that other thread!

gareth (gareth), Friday, 3 January 2003 09:51 (twenty-two years ago) link

todays pick: bowery electric ~ slow thrills (from before they went rubbish)

gareth (gareth), Friday, 3 January 2003 09:53 (twenty-two years ago) link

charlie and gareth r both so wrong it's not even funny, but then they both love pulp, which is such proof of aesthetic failing that it negates any opinion on dronerock they evince.

masonicboom, Friday, 3 January 2003 14:22 (twenty-two years ago) link

:(

gareth (gareth), Friday, 3 January 2003 14:42 (twenty-two years ago) link

How did the Dandy Warhols last album become dronerawk?

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Friday, 3 January 2003 14:44 (twenty-two years ago) link

related

gareth (gareth), Friday, 3 January 2003 14:46 (twenty-two years ago) link

HAVE YOU EVER LISTENED TO A SPACEMEN 3 ALBUM?!!?

Chris Ott (Chris Ott), Friday, 3 January 2003 14:49 (twenty-two years ago) link

eh? i love spacemen 3! i like quite a few of the rocket girl bands too, which is why i was disappointed with the tribute album

gareth (gareth), Friday, 3 January 2003 14:52 (twenty-two years ago) link

I too am confused about D*ndy W*rh*ls being dronerock. Unless it's some sort of Kate likes it = it is dronerock thing.

RickyT (RickyT), Friday, 3 January 2003 15:25 (twenty-two years ago) link

I knew there was a reason I brought Psychocandy with me to work... ahhhh... feel so good on my motorbike indeed.

Aaron W, Friday, 3 January 2003 15:36 (twenty-two years ago) link

Are Public Enemy dronerock? I'm asking 'cos I'm listening to Nation Of Millions... and the sirens and beats and stuff seem to tie in...

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Friday, 3 January 2003 15:58 (twenty-two years ago) link

PE are a damn sight more drone rock than the D*ndy W*rh*ls.

RickyT (RickyT), Friday, 3 January 2003 16:02 (twenty-two years ago) link

PE are not more Drone Rocky thent he Dandy Warhols, I just don't know how the last album is. Though I like RickyT's Kate Law of Dronerock. They occasionaly had the occasional drone rock chune early on but I don't think having a VU fetish makes you dronerock (see BRMC or band O' Assablancas).

Though I now have a desire to hear the new Warlocks lp.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Friday, 3 January 2003 16:17 (twenty-two years ago) link

the dandy warhols are dronePOP, whicdh is why so many dronerockers hate them. oh yeah, that and the fact that they are successful. the dw's ARE drone on the basis of such songs as Fasr-Driving Rave-Up, Be-In, and even on this hated new classic rawk record, there are still songs like godless and neitschze (fuck, they can't spell it either so i don't feel bad) to keep them in the drone quadrant.

people who don't want to call the dw's drone are generally people who have only heard and dismissed the singles. that would be like saying that spiritualized are not a dronerock band because they'd only ever heard Let It Come Down. a fair point, but still an erroneous one.

dronerock is all about texture. PE certainly have the texture down, they may very well qualify for the drone tag at times, but are they rock? you know, if there were a genre for dronerap, then, dammit, i could integerate my record collection. less beats, less lyrics, and more yummy TEXTURE and maybe i'd start to find more things to love in rap.

kate, Friday, 3 January 2003 17:19 (twenty-two years ago) link

listening to 13 tales right now, and the first three songs are pure dronerock. as are tracks 8, 9 and 13. 6 out of 13 songs, with lots of drone elements even in the pop/classic rock songs, is enough to swing this album into dronerock territory for me.

kate, Friday, 3 January 2003 17:41 (twenty-two years ago) link

I don't know about Godless and I guess we have different opinions on Cool Scene but I can't get past Big Indian to the Gospel so I forget how it goes but you didn't mention Mohammed. But if you say Portland and dronerawk to me Im more likely to say King Black Acid.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Friday, 3 January 2003 18:35 (twenty-two years ago) link

less beats, less lyrics, and more yummy TEXTURE

Sounds like cLOUDDEAD to me.

jot eff pe, Friday, 3 January 2003 18:40 (twenty-two years ago) link

I suppose I should say something here before someone says "Chris Barrus to thread", but damnit why are BRMC and the Dandys getting namechecked ahead of the Brian Jonestown Massacre.

Chris Barrus (xibalba), Friday, 3 January 2003 19:13 (twenty-two years ago) link

Cause BRMC and Dandys don't have a bad habbit of googling himself daily and posting it to his list. We don't have to call you to the thread Chris because its assumed as soon as someone says drone you are aware of it in your position as secret overlord of the internet.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Friday, 3 January 2003 19:37 (twenty-two years ago) link

You ridiculous man, Mr. Noodles. Chris knows *before* someone even says anything. Something about the eddies in the space-time continuum.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 3 January 2003 20:26 (twenty-two years ago) link

Well I know he has to clear it for it to pass through to the servers but I didn't know he was THAT powerful.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Friday, 3 January 2003 20:51 (twenty-two years ago) link

I wish BRMC were a bug so I could tread on it.

Callum (Callum), Friday, 3 January 2003 21:02 (twenty-two years ago) link

Why not wish they were puppies so you could put them down?

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Friday, 3 January 2003 21:04 (twenty-two years ago) link

Because squishing them would be more satisfying.

Callum (Callum), Friday, 3 January 2003 21:13 (twenty-two years ago) link

Im mixing boards and mailing lists up again. Maybe I should have a feminist rant and hopefully you'll go away.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Friday, 3 January 2003 21:16 (twenty-two years ago) link

Femenist rant, yes, that would be very relevant.

Callum (Callum), Friday, 3 January 2003 21:22 (twenty-two years ago) link

i would like to drown callum like a puppy and squish him dead for making comments like that. i don't like brmc either but no human being has the right to wish another dead because of like or hatred for their art.

i love ant*n n*wc*mb* dearly, but i'd rather not have bjm/ilm crossover.

chris, i was wondering when you'd get here... and i thought it was shocking that it took me so long to get here...

masonicboom, Friday, 3 January 2003 22:23 (twenty-two years ago) link

Too late: Several Classic or Duds at once! and taking sides: brian jonestown massacre vs. dandy warhols

And your wonderful comment:
This is a collaberation I would like to see! Momus and Joel BJM!

Thats it, a trio of Masonic Momus and Joel as the first ever postpop band!

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Friday, 3 January 2003 23:42 (twenty-two years ago) link

three years pass...
Why is calum on a dronerock thread? Noone wears banana suits.

Brigadier Lethbridge-Pfunkboy (Kerr), Wednesday, 21 June 2006 01:09 (eighteen years ago) link

Nuts to dronerock. Pure drone / dronenoise is better.
