I would like to do a similar thing as the other thead:
My big list.

My list is a little more unorganized, but i've got it sort of in genres.

Some of these I've heard and don't want anymore, but may buy if I find cheap. Some are albums. Some are bands. Any comments are fine (other recommendations, things to avoid, etc.)

Grandaddy are stupid fresh. They covered "Walking In A Winter Wonderland" and made it into a song about Alan Parsons! The Sophtware Slump is mostly excellent and the last two tracks render me a sad sobbing heap of a man.

Charlie (Charlie), Tuesday, 7 January 2003 02:03 (twenty-three years ago)

- Main - Hz
...is a DENSE guitar microsound thingie, alien but lovely, and two discs full of it. Easily my favourite on your list!

- *Nurse With Wound - Chance meeting on a Disecting Table
...if you like Hz, you should listen to NWW's 'An Awkward Pause' or 'Man with the Woman Face' first... but if you like 'Chance Meeting', go for...

- Capt Beefheart - Trout Mask Replica.
...which is, um, similar in spirit and level of professionalism.

- Lull: Moments
...sounds like the Eraserhead soundtrack. Quite non-repetitive for a pure drone record, and therefore never boring.

-*Einstürzende Neubauten: Halber Mensch, ... Silence in Sexy
...pretentious crap. Maybe less so if you don't understand the lyrics. (Thank God Thom Yorke's mumbling.)

"What, no Britney? "
Don't fret, I've already got all the Britany.

A Nairn (moretap), Tuesday, 7 January 2003 02:23 (twenty-three years ago)

you MUST GET THE STEVE GROSSMAN RECORD

stratus -billy c is a good record

under the bushes... has my #2 favorite gbv song

funky kingston and songs in the key of life are classic

skip the JJ perrey, and just dl the "hits"

escape from noise is kind of funny, but are you really going to want to listen to it more than once every 5 years, NO

my favorite things and a love supreme are musts, blue train is good

i personally love the song 'hi scores' but not the rest of the ep

ron (ron), Tuesday, 7 January 2003 02:51 (twenty-three years ago)

I own about a 100 or more albums on your list and all I can say is...Buy anything you can find by Wide Boy Awake!!! Everyone must have a copy of Slang Teacher and Billy Hyena. It's a must!

Scott Seward, Tuesday, 7 January 2003 04:01 (twenty-three years ago)

there's loads of good stuff on that list,as well as loads of stuff that i've never heard of and loads of people i also mean to find out about, but if i could make just one recommendation-
given that you have even a vague interest in the super furry animals,i can unconditionally recommend mwng...as i'm sure i've mentioned on numerous other threads,it has been my favourite album for years...it took a month or two to really get into it,but is well worth it...
loads of other good stuff on the list as well, but trust me about mwng
(and don't be put off by the fact that it's in welsh...)

robin (robin), Tuesday, 7 January 2003 05:34 (twenty-three years ago)

"Buy anything you can find by Wide Boy Awake"

I got Chicken Outlaw on a compilation, and downloaded a few other songs, and since then have tried to get all there stuff, but haven't been successful yet.

A Nairn (moretap), Tuesday, 7 January 2003 06:15 (twenty-three years ago)

This is hard right, because if you really like all these, what don't you like (so we can warn you off the things that sound like you don't like)

Essential : Momus, Cocteau Twins

Recommended : Plaid, 1000 Knives of Riuichi Sakamoto

Questioned : All this 80s stuff. OMD? A-ha, Rita Lee, Depeche Mode's Speak and Spell? There's some classic 80s pop, but do you need so much of it? Particularly albums which are half full of fillers anyway? I'd restrict 80s pop to downloading a few of the biggest hits and leaving it there.

phil jones (interstar), Tuesday, 7 January 2003 09:41 (twenty-three years ago)

You simply must get Emergency & I by Dismemberment Plan, The Stone Roses, Giant Steps by the Boo Radleys, Screamadelica and the Talk Talk albums RIGHT NOW. I'll check the rest of the list in detail this afternoon.

Elvis- Elvis Presley, From Elvis in Memphis, Elvis, his hand in mine

The sessions that made up 'From Elvis in Memphis' make up pretty much my favourite music made by anyone ever. But even though FEIM now comes with extra tracks it still doesn't contain all the essential stuff laid down at the American Studio in Memphis in Jan/Feb 1969. I originally heard most of those songs on the compilation 'The Memphis Record' but even that doesn't have it all. You can now get a double CD called 'Suspicious Minds' which I think covers everything. Buy it.

'Elvis Presley' and 'Elvis' contain great music, and have historical interest as his first two LPs, but you might as well get the 50s box set ('The King of Rock 'n' Roll: The Complete 50s Masters').

I haven't heard 'His hand in mine' but I like his gospel stuff and I'm thinking of getting the gospel box set that has all this.

Avoid:

Cats Miaow - neither here nor there tw33.
Grandaddy - they are just boring
Boo Radleys - giant steps is just the biggest disappointment in comparison to Everything's Alright Forever (clearly it wasn't)

Buy:

Windy and Carl - great sleep music
Slayer - everyone needs this album
Codiene - Barely Real = minor classic

There's loads of stuff on your list I haven't heard (of) but I can also heartily recommend:

Frank Sinatra: In the wee small hours (and pretty much all of his Capitol albums)
Marvin Gaye Anthology
Curtis Mayfield Anthology (both of these anthologies being as good a place as any to start, I guess, so long as you carry on from there)
In fact, starting with compilations for the following makes sense too:
sly & family stone (but obviously you need 'There's a riot going on' too)
temptations -
*chuck berry - great 28
buddy holly - greatest hits 'chirping crickets'(MCA)
patsy cline
Jerry Lee Lewis - 18 original sun greatest hits
Bo Diddley- His Best (chess 50th)

soul stirrers - s/t (I'm thinking of getting the new box set)
sam cooke - live @ harlem square club
stevie wonder- songs in the key of life
marvin Gaye- What's Goin' On?

*Bryan Ferry - Boys & Girls, Frantic, Bete Noire (I would buy Frantic first and Bete Noire last)

Bob Dylan - Blonde on Blonde

*Loop - Heaven's End (and the 'Collision' EP)

stone roses-stone roses (Fucking hell, yes)

primal scream – screamadelica (ditto)

Husker du- zen arcade, new day rising, flip your wig, warehouse (maybe even in that order)
Boo Radleys - Giant Steps (best record ever made by scousers?)
Orb's adventures beyond the ultraworld
Capt Beefheart - Trout Mask Replica

Roxy Music - Viva, Manifesto, Flesh & Blood, Heart Still Beating, Concerto (far be it from me to stop anyone buying a Roxy record, but you can probably stop after the first 3 of these)

VU - 1969: live vol 1 & 2
*Big Star- Third/Sisters Lovers (and the first two if you don’t have them)
*John Cale: music for a new society (an extraoridanry record)
*Iggy Pop-lust for life
lou reed- street hassle, The Blue Mask, New York, New Sensation (Blue Mask in particular is very underrated)

Grateful Dead - American Beauty (though not quite sure why you’ve bracketed them with Motorhead and Slayer!)
ABC - "Lexicon of Love"
New Order - Power Coruption & lies, Low-life, Technique
talk talk - laughing stock, spirit of eden, colour of spring

the fall (probably best looking for a Search & Destroy thread, I’m sure there is one)

replacements- let it be
*13th floor elevators- The pychedelic sounds of
Notorious Byrd brothers
beach boys- endless summer
phil spector
Robert Wyatt - schleep, Dondestan, ruth is stranger than richard (presuming you already have ‘Rock Bottom’)
tim buckley (I’d start with Happy Sad, Starsailor and the live albums Dream Letter and Live at the Troubadour)

Can: Future Days, Monster Movie (and Tago Mago, Ege Bamyasi)

Burning Spear: Marcus Garvey

Charles Mingus - Mingus at Antibes, Mingus Ah Um
coltrane- Blue train, My favorite thing, a love supreme
John Zorn: Spillane
Out to Lunch by Eric Dolphy
Free Jazz (A Collective Improvisation -Ornette Coleman Double Quartet
Miles Davis - Bitches Brew, On THe Corner

Brian Eno- discreet music, Apollo
Jon Hassel- Fourth World

Bloody hell, you've got a long list. I hope you've been saving up.

"Get these, all of them...get them, I say!

Morresey - Vauxvill & I (uh, Morrissey? Get Your Arsenal, Viva Hate and Bona Drag, sack the rest)"

So are you saying get Vauxhall & I or not Charlie?

I agree wholeheartedly with the rest of your selections but personally I think Vauxhall & I's probably the best album Morrissey's made since The Smiths split....

"though not quite sure why you’ve bracketed them with Motorhead and Slayer!"

I think I was going through famous bands that I've known about, but never really heard much of. I happened to do these three together.
Like I said my list isn't too organized.

"Bloody hell, you've got a long list. I hope you've been saving up."

I've been saving up this list for a while, and some day when I'm really wealthy I intend on going on some massive record buying trip that lasts months, where I get everything.

A Nairn (moretap), Tuesday, 7 January 2003 15:05 (twenty-three years ago)

I've only heard 6 of the things on yr list and I've only even heard of about another 20. Can anybody beat that? In either direction?

mei (mei), Tuesday, 7 January 2003 15:55 (twenty-three years ago)

Good Lord, that's a long and varied list. I'll comment on the ones I have:

I like the following a lot:

Grandaddy- the software slump
Mazzy Star - She Hangs Brightly
Beachwood Sparks
stone roses-stone roses
suede- dog star man
*Low: trust
primal scream - screamadelica
Boo Radleys - Giant Steps
Stephen Malkmus - s/t
Manic Street Preachers - Holy Bible
Neutral Milk Hotel - In the Areoplane over the sea
Yo La Tengo - Electropura
Aphex Twin (only have SAW 85-92 and I Care Because You do, both great, but SAW is better).
Orb's adventures beyond the ultraworld (bought this yest, is v.good)
super furry animals - def go for radiator over fuzzy logic.

I've heard Langley School Music Project - Innocence & Dispair, and don't understand its appeal. I was very disappointed with Sparklehorse's "It's a Wonderful Life." I loved "Vivadixie...", but that one sucks ass. Gorky's is ok. I find Codeine to be brittle and unlovable, so don't bother.

''I've heard Langley School Music Project - Innocence & Dispair, and don't understand its appeal.''

didn't frank kogan write something on this. I remember it was great but i haven't heard this as I'm very cynical abt everything.
