Lead singer of band Green Day arrested Sunday for D-U-I

Monday, January 6, 2003
(01-06) 23:42 PST BERKELEY, Calif. (AP)

The lead singer of the punk band Green Day was arrested on suspicion of drunk driving.

Billie Joe Armstrong, 30, was arrested early Sunday at about 1:00 a.m. near Telegraph Ave. for allegedly driving his black BMW convertible under the influence of alcohol, said Berkeley police spokeswoman Mary Kusmiss.

Armstrong fronts the Bay Area punk trio with several platinum selling albums to its credit including "Insomniac" and "Nimrod."

Punk = stupid. If you can afford a BMW, you can afford a sober driver. What a "nimrod!"

whoops! wrong room. I thought this thread was going to be about punk rock, not some asshole from San Francisco.

"I'll tell you about Punk Rock; 'punk rock' is a term used by dilettantes, and, uh... heartless manipulators..."

You're confusing political punx with gutter punx.

I've seen punx drive beat-up early '70s 2002s, so nyeah.

Nate Patrin (Nate Patrin), Friday, 10 January 2003 00:25 (twenty-two years ago)

C'mon, there's nothing punk rock about driving under the influence. Hell, even Dubya did it.

o. nate (onate), Friday, 10 January 2003 00:28 (twenty-two years ago)

C'mon, there's nothing punk rock about driving under the influence.

Replacements, Sorry Ma..., track 1.

Nate Patrin (Nate Patrin), Friday, 10 January 2003 01:16 (twenty-two years ago)

This reminds me of a Camper Van Beethoven lyric I can't remember. "I'm a punker, i've got a mohwak...." Anyone know the rest.

mallory bourgeois (painter man), Friday, 10 January 2003 01:22 (twenty-two years ago)

errr, you mean Black Flag lyric?

flightsatdusk (flightsatdusk), Friday, 10 January 2003 01:25 (twenty-two years ago)

No I don't. I'm refering to Wasted from Telephone Free Landslide Victory, or I think thats the record it's on. I doubt this is a Black Flag song, although I know nothing about Black Flag other than the progression of Henry Rollin's neck's mass. Wait, I remember the rest.

"I was so gnarly and I drove my dads car." Atleast I think thats it.

mallory bourgeois (painter man), Friday, 10 January 2003 01:41 (twenty-two years ago)

It *is* a cover of a Black Flag song, though they slow it down, countrify it, and maybe goof on the lyrics a bit. And yes, I realize that I have killed/derailed yet another thread. Sorry also for being unnecessarily snarky and show-offy. ("ooo, look at me, I recognize song by semi-obscure indie band is cover of song by semi-obscure hardcore band")

The original is ver. good, btw. Recorded pre-Rollins... Also, it's a mistake to entirely dismiss Black Flag (with and without R), imho. They rocked harder than just about any band ever... And, if the hardness of a band's rock is not of interest to you, they also had some very interesting pop sensibilities lurking beneath the noise, speed, and sweat.... I think CVB's cover should be filed under "loving tribute" rather than "mocking parody"...

flightsatdusk (flightsatdusk), Friday, 10 January 2003 02:53 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, my friend Christopher who is peering over my shoulder said CVB did a twist on the lyrics, and don't worry he is getting your job done by grilling me for dissing Black Flag in the first place. But gah, thanks.

mallory bourgeois (painter man), Friday, 10 January 2003 03:15 (twenty-two years ago)

CVB semi-obscure? Not at $25 a ticket!

Black Flag semi-obscure? Er, uh, maybe.

1970s BMW? No way, not if it was black and convertible.

hstencil, Friday, 10 January 2003 03:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Semi-obscure: The "semi" bit is to indicate that most people who know something about pop music know who they are. The "obscure" bit is to indicate that, really, most people don't know that much about music. I am relatively confident in saying that I am the only person in 1) my workplace, 2) my apartment complex, 3) my family, etc etc who knows who BF and CBV are.

And I actually spent 25 bucks to see CBV. Money well-spent, I thought.

flightsatdusk (flightsatdusk), Friday, 10 January 2003 07:29 (twenty-two years ago)

er, CVB, that is...

Green Day and Blink 182 are widely percieved to be almost identical sounding. Do *you* percieve them that way?
