People are sometimes surprised when I say that, for me, Cap Beefheart's Trout Mask Replica is so evocative of normal American sunlit suburbia and that's one reason why I like it so much.

It could be that it's the Beefheart influence on the Memphis Goons (who I first heard around the same time that I first heard Beefheart [lucky week at the used CD store]) that's given me that impression. I dunno.

The Teenage BBQ CD is swell. I particularly like "Brazen Man". I know there's lots more Memphis Goons stuff. I'd buy it if someone put it out.

i only heard 4 songs by them (a vinyl ep that i got in a sale bin) but theyre great. robot hull posted on ILM 1x, he said all this anti-modern pop music, anti-british, typical old school american rockist stuff & everyone laffed at him.

What does that mean, "typical old school american rockist stuff"? What does "rockist" mean? Does it something to do with when everyone gets too hip for school and starts taking "rock theory" seriously? "Rockist" sounds like some British person's word to me.

Good comment on "Trout Mask" there above.

Listening to "In My New Car" right now. Always puts me on the verge of tears for some reason.

Mood music! Ain't old-timey!
But it's in a different key
It doesn't sound slinky and chimey!
Like the Ventures or Taj Mahal!

Do a Goons POX.

In some kind of rough order (I don't know):

San Antonio Desert
Miss Maggie Ann
Chop Chop Chop
Paulie's Toys
Snow White
Children of Danger
Mood Music
In My New Car
Here Comes My Baby/Oh, My Sweet Wine
Overton Park

Robot A. Hull said something in an old Creem article on the history of psychedelia about how no one (not even the Elevators, he says) could match the spirit of the Godz. Said that none of the New York No Wave bands would ever match the spirit of the Godz. Well, he never heard the Red Transistor LOL but argue right or wrong - dude sort of knew of bands that COULD match the spirit of the Godz given that he was in one himself: the Memphis Goons.

RE simon reynolds take on the golden age of rock criticism & the glorious days of rock critics, i.e. Bangs, Meltzer, & Toshches:

who the fuck is this limey simon reynolds anyway? never has he spoke of sam the sham or kiss, as far as I can tell. never has he wrestled with another human being in the dirt. never has he listened to both Dust albums. never has he said ONE THING THAT IS FUNNY. he is a jerk, like most limey critics. every CREEM writer worth his salt knows that music writers from ENGLAND ARE THE ABSOLUTE WORST.... and they are the very reason we have all had to endure the likes of Oasis and Radiohead and, heaven help us, RAVES!! Simon Reynolds is nothing, I mean nothing: think of this--once i interviewed Sky Saxon who was undergoing a blood transfusion in Hawaii and he was so feeble he could barely talk on the phone and he talked about how shriveled his cock was and how he hoped one day that shriveled cock would become hard again so that he could once again perform "Mr. Farmer" with the fervor in which it was intended: well, Mr. Simon Reynolds IS NOT EVEN WORTH THAT SHRIVELED COCK OF SKY SAXON... he knows nothing of music but pretends he knows nothing of rock 'n' roll ranting, just that awful throbbing rave ecstasy crapola... & what's more, he's a limey who thinks he's smart (the worst kind)... THERE WAS A GOOD SIMON ONCE: SIMON FRITH (smart guy, good writer)--whatever happened to him, how come he's not on this website? PLEASE PLEASE do not waste our time by having to read anymore snotty SIMON REYNOLDS idiotic spouting...he has committed the ultimate offense: HE IS NOT FUNNY AND HE DOES NOT ROCK!

But anyway, I bumped this because apparently there was a Goons release called PEPPO in 09. It's on Spotify, has some songs that are duplicates from Teenage BBQ but some new ones.

lorde willin' (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Monday, 11 November 2013 01:35 (twelve years ago)

It's kinda weird I learned more about them in the last hour than I ever knew. Just picked up the CD back then cuz it looked cool was so mysterious.

Just came to this through a Robot Hull interview I linked to a few weeks ago:

https://andyoucandancetoit.wordpress.com/2016/06/06/interview-wrobert-hull-creem-time-life-etc/

"San Antonio Desert" (bumper music in the interview) is fantastic.
