Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Wednesday, 19 February 2003 09:14 (twenty-two years ago)

heh, 69 Love Songs

James Blount (James Blount), Wednesday, 19 February 2003 09:28 (twenty-two years ago)

I just loved Mansun's Six.

*kills circa-'99-self and buries all the evidence*

gazuga (gazuga), Wednesday, 19 February 2003 09:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Life and times of S.Carter?

Jacob (Jacob), Wednesday, 19 February 2003 09:51 (twenty-two years ago)

my brother was v. fond of Six too, i thought 't was horrible...
my pick for that year would be Tocotronic - K.O.O.K. (runners-up: Calla, zoppo, Wilco, Mogwai, Motorpsycho, Prolapse, Mark Lanegan, Death in Vegas, Built to Spill, Caesar's Palace. just to put my choice into context... again: good year!)

willem (willem), Wednesday, 19 February 2003 09:57 (twenty-two years ago)

how to know the butterflies of love /
the rondelles - the fox /
lilac time - looking for a day in the night /
xtc - apple venus vol 1

ummmmm

butterflies of love.

rayas blancas, Wednesday, 19 February 2003 09:57 (twenty-two years ago)

Surely it's a bit soon to get nostalgic about 1999?

Had a look through that year's 'best ofs' and it's remarkable how few albums I love from that year. The Wilco record is good, but for my favourite I'd have to pick:

Shelby Lynee - 'I am Shelby Lynne'
or
Kevin Rowland - 'My Beauty'

James Ball (James Ball), Wednesday, 19 February 2003 10:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Orbital - Middle of Nowhere.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Wednesday, 19 February 2003 11:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Mr Bungle - California

chaki (chaki), Wednesday, 19 February 2003 11:12 (twenty-two years ago)

Go!

Enh, Whatcha Doin' isn't THAT great.

The Chemicals' Surrender, on the other hand... classic for "Music: Response" alone.

Nate Patrin (Nate Patrin), Wednesday, 19 February 2003 11:14 (twenty-two years ago)

BASEMENT JAXX 'REMEDY'

(narrowly beating 'Beaucoup Fish' and 'Surrender')

'99 was an EXCELLENT year for music

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 19 February 2003 11:28 (twenty-two years ago)

DJ Martian (djmartian), Wednesday, 19 February 2003 11:41 (twenty-two years ago)

The Soft Bulletin by the Flaming Lips just destroys all competition if you ask me.

Evan (Evan), Wednesday, 19 February 2003 11:42 (twenty-two years ago)

[gazuga: a reminder, Mansun - Six was an Autumn 1998 release.]

DJ Martian (djmartian), Wednesday, 19 February 2003 11:45 (twenty-two years ago)

The first Supergrass album, Tindersticks' Simple Pleasure, Tom Waits' Mule Variations and XTC's Apple Venus are all great albums but Soft Bulletin wins for me.

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Wednesday, 19 February 2003 12:05 (twenty-two years ago)

16 posts in and nobody's mentioned "Utopia Parkway" by Fountains of Wayne? You is fools.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Wednesday, 19 February 2003 12:06 (twenty-two years ago)

The first Supergrass album

...was released in 1995. The album they did release in '99 was fanbloodytastic, though (AMG be damned).

Nate Patrin (Nate Patrin), Wednesday, 19 February 2003 12:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Roy Montgomery - _324 E. 13th Street, #7

Though i'm cheating more than a little bit, as it's a singles comp going back as far as 1985. I can't, however, think of 1999 without those songs playing in the tiny apartment that i was renting for the latter part of the year.

Matt Maxwell (Matt M.), Wednesday, 19 February 2003 14:33 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm going to say Grupo Niche's A Golpe de Folklore, although I don't really mean it, but someone has to cheer for Latin music. There's a little too much fluff included. The first three tracks are the best, though some of the rest is pretty good. (I am thinking of buying Mr Bungle's California very soon, and suspect it could be my real choice for the best once I hear it.)

Rockist Scientist, Wednesday, 19 February 2003 15:24 (twenty-two years ago)

has to be low's secret name (their masterpiece).

closely followed by shack and flaming lips.

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Wednesday, 19 February 2003 15:33 (twenty-two years ago)

and yes, the sunshine underground is a great track.

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Wednesday, 19 February 2003 15:35 (twenty-two years ago)

but sensible folk know that single of the year was campag velocet's to lose la trek.

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Wednesday, 19 February 2003 15:36 (twenty-two years ago)

I've still got Bon Chic Bon Genre. I daren't get rid of it in case it's worth dosh in 20 years.

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Wednesday, 19 February 2003 15:37 (twenty-two years ago)

me too. it's worth holding onto for the 3 or 4 good tracks...

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Wednesday, 19 February 2003 15:59 (twenty-two years ago)

whatever Will Oldham did that year.

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Wednesday, 19 February 2003 16:03 (twenty-two years ago)

"i see a darkness", i think. it's good, yes.

Wasn't Darkness 2000?
no, it must've been 99 since the Cash alb was 2000, wuzzentit?

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Wednesday, 19 February 2003 16:37 (twenty-two years ago)

I think I'm gonna have to get myself behind the MULE, yeah!

Lynskey (Lynskey), Wednesday, 19 February 2003 17:10 (twenty-two years ago)

off the top of my head, I'm gonna go with Summerteeth.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Wednesday, 19 February 2003 17:12 (twenty-two years ago)

A five-way tie between The Soft Bulletin/Flaming Lips, Summerteeth/Wilco, The Fragile/Nine Inch Nails, The Battle of Los Angeles/Rage Against The Machine, and The Hot Rock/Sleater-Kinney. If I had to narrow it down by asking if "Is it the artist's best work?" then I'd drop the Wilco and NIN. I think they've done better.

Charles McCain, Wednesday, 19 February 2003 18:33 (twenty-two years ago)

jess (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 19 February 2003 18:42 (twenty-two years ago)

Mogwai-Come On Die Young, basement jaxx and chemicalcalcacalcalbrothers

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 19 February 2003 18:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Clinic - Clinic. Also All Seeing I, even if Sweet Music is arse.

I ain't listened to Shack nearly enough, though. If I did, I think I might just love it.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Wednesday, 19 February 2003 19:03 (twenty-two years ago)

I bought California today and I'm not sure it trumps that Grupo Niche album. It does what it does extremely well, most of the time, but parody and pastiche are my favorite things.

Rockist Scientist, Wednesday, 19 February 2003 19:08 (twenty-two years ago)

Wait, that was before I got to the ketjak backed up by metal sounding guitars.

Rockist Scientist, Wednesday, 19 February 2003 19:09 (twenty-two years ago)

The Chemicals' Surrender, on the other hand... classic for "Music: Response" alone.

B-b-but "Music: Response" is horrible! It was the death-knell of the Chemicals (at least until _Come With Us_ came out and redeemed them).

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 19 February 2003 19:13 (twenty-two years ago)

1999 was a good harvest. Today, I'm going to pick John Linnell's State Songs.

Chris P (Chris P), Wednesday, 19 February 2003 19:16 (twenty-two years ago)

'Music:Response' was fine - i do like the way it morphs into 'Under The Influence' which then morphs into 'Out Of Control' - this mix-CD style is prevalent at the start of the first three Chems albums tho

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 19 February 2003 19:18 (twenty-two years ago)

I had such high hopes for that album after hearing "Hey Boy Hey Girl" (which is still my favorite single of theirs by a mile). Having it open with a sad retread of "Leave Home" was deeply unsatisfying. ("Out Of Control" was great, though. They should have opened with that.)

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 19 February 2003 19:23 (twenty-two years ago)

i'm going to say

dot alison - afterglow
birdie - some dusty
and
lali puna - tridecoder

g (graysonlane), Wednesday, 19 February 2003 19:27 (twenty-two years ago)

shit, can't forget
mojave 3 - out of tune
kevin rowland - my beauty
spearmint - a week away

really

g (graysonlane), Wednesday, 19 February 2003 19:29 (twenty-two years ago)

(I am cracking up at everyone's definition of the word "one")

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 19 February 2003 19:30 (twenty-two years ago)

the thread starter didn't even stick to ti!

g (graysonlane), Wednesday, 19 February 2003 19:32 (twenty-two years ago)

either Moby - Play or Blue Man Group - Audio.

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Wednesday, 19 February 2003 20:20 (twenty-two years ago)

James Blount (James Blount), Wednesday, 19 February 2003 20:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Chaki totally beat me to it. Damn skippy.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Wednesday, 19 February 2003 20:24 (twenty-two years ago)

kieran, Thursday, 20 February 2003 03:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Guess i'm only a wannabee hipster n00b, as my copy of _Vision, Creation, Newsun_ says it came out in 2000.

And i didn't even hear it until 2001...

I'll stand by my original choice, even though _VCN_ is outfuckingstanding.

Matt Maxwell (Matt M.), Thursday, 20 February 2003 03:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Remedy or The Underground Lovers' Cold Feeling or Missy Elliot's Da Real World.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Thursday, 20 February 2003 05:20 (twenty-two years ago)

tim f. is a mindreader...

DA REAL WORLD

(haven't heard cold feeling but was that the album that had 'losin it' on? i love that song!)

Andy K (Andy K), Thursday, 20 February 2003 13:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Hmmm... it does appear that on this list, moreso than on the others, people are deliberately choosing the most obscure album, one that they know full well others won't have heard, just to make themselves appear 'original' and 'out there'.

And you know what?

I don't believe them.

At all.

russ t, Thursday, 20 February 2003 14:04 (twenty-two years ago)

or maybe they just enjoyed an obscure album more than any others...

seriously, i'm the only person who thought beachwood sparks was last year's best rec, but that hardly made me appear more 'out there'. it's just the one i played and enjoyed the most. in the same way i played and enjoyed more obvious favourites from other years (blue lines, ok computer, everything must go, etc). i don't see why people should have to toe a particular line.

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Thursday, 20 February 2003 14:11 (twenty-two years ago)

kieran, whats that yume bitsu album like? i was kind of all over that bardo pond/roy montgomery stuff in 99, and considered chancing that album. but i never did in the end

gareth (gareth), Thursday, 20 February 2003 14:14 (twenty-two years ago)

interesting point russ, i hadnt thought of it like that. whats your choice?

gareth (gareth), Thursday, 20 February 2003 14:15 (twenty-two years ago)

69 Love Songs is apparently the correct answer

the pinefox, Thursday, 20 February 2003 14:16 (twenty-two years ago)

even if they are russ, why not? if people feel an album was unfairly neglected or overlooked somehow from a year gone by this is the perfect place to state its case once again no?

i cant think of any albums from '99 i loved that were neglected or overlooked tho...

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 20 February 2003 14:19 (twenty-two years ago)

I'll save that for 2000, seeing as that's when it came out in the UK.

N. (nickdastoor), Thursday, 20 February 2003 14:20 (twenty-two years ago)

Russ nobody here has picked anything obscure.

I don't know. I am kind of scared to play 69 Love Songs again because I liked it *so much* back then.

Tom (Groke), Thursday, 20 February 2003 14:49 (twenty-two years ago)

No one should ever ask DJ Martian to "Pick One"...

Mark (MarkR), Thursday, 20 February 2003 14:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Russ, which of these choices are you thinking of in particular? (I admit that many of these bands are top 40 type stuff, but I'm familiar with most of it by name.)

Rockist Scientist, Thursday, 20 February 2003 15:31 (twenty-two years ago)

i don't think it should matter even if someone made a really obscure choice. maybe they just thought it was the best rec. sometimes people will go on about obscure music to show off, but more often, people just happen to love obscure music. it seems a bit ridiculous to dismiss any obscure-music-love as a pose.

also - alison moyet's "hometime" wasn't many people's choice for album of the year last year. does that mean russ was just pretending to like it to be different?

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Thursday, 20 February 2003 15:38 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm with russ on this one...

my choice? stereophonics - performance and cocktails. it's the barometer against which all 90's rock records are measured.

andy paltridge (andy), Thursday, 20 February 2003 15:50 (twenty-two years ago)

is it bollocks!

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 20 February 2003 15:51 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm just baiting him so I can say: GRUPO NICHE IS NOT OBSCURE IN MY WORLD, BUDDY. Anyone who has gone out Latin dancing in the last several years has probably danced to them, and most likely would recognize some of their songs. I'd bet they are a lot less obscure in the Spanish speaking world than Wilco is in the English speaking world.

And, incidentally, while California is fun, I'm sticking with A Golpe de Folklore.

(I have nothing against obscure choices, however.)

Rockist Scientist, Thursday, 20 February 2003 15:57 (twenty-two years ago)

Aw shit, I knew we'd forgotten somebody. The Stereophonics - of course. Andy Paltridge is, as ever, otm.

James Ball (James Ball), Thursday, 20 February 2003 15:58 (twenty-two years ago)

69 Love Songs is apparently the correct answer

Quoting "Bohemian Rhapsody" here:

"No NO NO NO NO NO!!!!"

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 20 February 2003 16:37 (twenty-two years ago)

whats that yume bitsu album like?

Pretty melodic for the genre (ie. not as feedback-driven as BP). There are synth pieces built around single notes, but the rest has more dynamics than a lot of dronerock, including recent Yume Bitsu.

kieran, Thursday, 20 February 2003 16:45 (twenty-two years ago)

kilian - 'Hometime' may not be to everyone's taste - but I love the production work (The Insects - genius) and also, anything that features various members of Goldfrapp, Portishead, Spiritualized and a few mates of mine from here in Bristol can't be bad. And the songs, and delivery - it'd be nice if people listened instead of writing the record off as a sad comeback from an 80s has been. Because it isn't.

Stevem.... 1999..... I honestly can't think of an album from that year that really grabbed me - I'll have to search through my collection.....

russ t, Thursday, 20 February 2003 16:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Britney - ...Baby One More Time.

Jay-Z - Vol 3: Life and Times

Destiny's Child - Writings On The Wall

Melanie C. - Northern Star

Eminem - The Slim Shady LP

Missy - Da Real World

Backstreet Boys - Millenium

Ryde Or Die v. 1

What a FANTASTIC year for music.

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Thursday, 20 February 2003 17:09 (twenty-two years ago)

But it already seems old now, doesn't it? In fact it seems older than a lot of years before it.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 20 February 2003 17:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Sterling - you're being ironic. Right?

russ t, Thursday, 20 February 2003 17:17 (twenty-two years ago)

You really haven't been here that long, Russ, I can tell.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 20 February 2003 17:18 (twenty-two years ago)

sigh

jess (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 20 February 2003 17:19 (twenty-two years ago)

i was wistful for 1999

jess (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 20 February 2003 17:25 (twenty-two years ago)

I agree Russ, Northern Star is rub.

I'm not wistful for 1999. I wish I'd enjoyed it more when it was around, though.

Tom (Groke), Thursday, 20 February 2003 17:30 (twenty-two years ago)

At the time, Super Furry Animals' Guerrilla loomed large, and I had Stereo Type A by Cibo Matto at #2. Now, I might vote for Cafe Tacuba's Reves/Yosoy over either one of them, with the Negro Problem's Joys & Concerns right behind. Such is hindsight.

Neudonym, Thursday, 20 February 2003 17:40 (twenty-two years ago)

_Stereo Type A_ is fucking horrible and killed my Cibo Matto fandom.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 20 February 2003 17:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Sporty Spice -- Classic or Dud?

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Thursday, 20 February 2003 17:50 (twenty-two years ago)

'99 for me is about the Big Three of Britdance at the time (Chems, Underworld, Basement Jaxx...in fact five if you include Orbital and Leftfield) all dropping what i considered to be excellent albums - its so hard for me to define it any other way

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 20 February 2003 17:57 (twenty-two years ago)

_Stereo Type A_ is fucking horrible and killed my Cibo Matto fandom.

My least favorite Dan Perry post evah...I'm sad now. I still love ya though. :D

Stereo Type A = a great rekkid in the nickalicious' book. I mean, shit, it's worth it for the straight-off-the-Legend-of-Zelda-sndtrk. stuff like "Clouds", not to mention Miho gets 1 billion MC points for rhyming "Obi Wan Kenobe" with "wasabi" and "waiting in the lobby".

nickalicious (nickalicious), Thursday, 20 February 2003 18:17 (twenty-two years ago)

i certainly wasn't writing "hometime" off, russ. it could be fantastic. i was just using it to illustrate the fact that if you choose an overlooked album as your favourite of the year, it needn't be because you want to be deliberately obscure, it could just be because the album you enjoyed the most was overlooked/disliked by others. some albums i love are obscure. some sold loads and won loads of acclaim. it doesn't bother me either way.

i'm with you on melanie c, though...

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Thursday, 20 February 2003 20:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Yes 99 does appear to have been a good year, though I feel last year and to a lesser extent 2001 are years where I've bought more and will end up remembering more.

Ronan (Ronan), Thursday, 20 February 2003 20:21 (twenty-two years ago)
