Songs That Tell You To Shut Up S/D (C/D?)

Being a blabbermouth who is always up for self-improvement, I love songs that tell me to stop talking. Not many are coming to mind right now.

Talk Talk "Talk Talk"
Kelly Osbourne "Shut Up!"
Cabaret Voltaire "Nag Nag Nag" (at least that's what I think it's about)
Extreme "More Than Words"
Smiths "Bigmouth Strikes Again"

there are some good ones about talking a lot (Kix's "Mighty Mouth," Peter Gabriel's "Big Time" - where he's gonna let those big words come right out), but I think the shut up songs are usually better. Got any favorites and thoughts on this one?

Copey's 'World Shut your Mouth?'

Zora (Zora), Saturday, 22 February 2003 21:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Is "Shut the fuck up" what those weird sounds on "N2Gether Now" by Limp Bizkit and Method Man are actually saying? If so, destroy.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Saturday, 22 February 2003 21:41 (twenty-two years ago)

only two i can think of off the top of my head (and both are "C"):

the primitives, "crash"
and
david bowie, "it's no game, pt. 1"

Tad (llamasfur), Saturday, 22 February 2003 21:46 (twenty-two years ago)

actually I wanna classic up "N2Gethernow" by Limp and Method Man.

But I'll destroy "One Step Closer" by Linkin Park. I don't mind most of the song, but the part where he yells "Shut up when I'm talking to you!" is pretty mean. Also the band Gob's next album has a song that might be a single called "Give Up Your Grudge" where they say to shut your fucking mouth, despite being real crybabies themselves. I'll destroy that as well.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Saturday, 22 February 2003 21:47 (twenty-two years ago)

oh yeah, the clash ("clash city rockers") which i also grade as "classic" (though certain curmudgeons will disagree)

wow, look at all those Eminem songs. Is that:
a) anger management problems
b) trying to sound like a teenager
or
c) both?

gabbneb (gabbneb), Saturday, 22 February 2003 21:54 (twenty-two years ago)

god. it's kinda disturbing to see so many in a row. Definitely more hesistant to call them classic when they all line up like that.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Saturday, 22 February 2003 21:57 (twenty-two years ago)

Both Anthrax's "Caught in a Mosh" and "I'm the Man" have a few very clear "Shut up"s in them.

The Loud Family's "Ballad of How You Can All Shut Up" has a title that tells you to shut up.

The track itself is a woman and one of those robotic computer voices reciting random lines from old Game Theory songs.

Mean Guy, Monday, 24 February 2003 05:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Genesis, "Small Talk,"
and "shut up" songs are a regular staple
in hip-hop, closely related to "i hate
all you haters that be hatin' me" songs.

Shutup - the Replacements
lyrics by Paul Westerberg
______________________________________________________________

Well apathy's got a hold on me
And it won't let go
Tell me your problem, I'll tell you mine
Motherfucker you're gonna know
Well I can go for a change
Go for a jog
Tell me about your rock band
Tell me about your job
Shut up
Shut up
Shut up

Well Tommy's too young
Bobby's too drunk
I only know/can shout one note
Chris needs a watch to keep time
We'll never find the time to vote
And I can for a change
Go for a job
Tell me about your girlfriend
Tell me about your job
Shut up
Shut up
Shut up
Shut up
Fuck you
Good luck

david bowie, "it's no game, pt. 1"

This is the first one I thought of, too, mainly because he shrieks it. But he's not telling 'you' to shut up, he's talking to Fripp.

Strangely, 'Shut Up' by Madness doesn't fall into this category.

James Ball (James Ball), Monday, 24 February 2003 15:18 (twenty-two years ago)

"Turd On the Run", Pussy Galore from their Exile On Main Street cassette, it's Jon Spencer telling the band to shut up cuz he can't hear his vocals or something.

"Motormouth" by Mondo Grosso

You babble on and on
You babble tirelessly
You blubber on and on
The pleasure's yours but not mine

You babble loud and long
You keep on talking to me
You're dragging on and on and on and on and on...

Why can't you shut your mouth
I don't care what you're talking about

Why can't you figure out
Why nobody will stick around?
Do I gotta spell it out?
My god you're such a motormouth

Can't believe the esteemed Fire-Honourer from NYC has allowed this thread to exist all this time - and evidently even visited it himself on at least a couple of occasions - without The Stranglers having been mentioned.

Apart from the lyrics to "Bitching": ("Got Anything To Say? No? Well Shut Up!"), the B-side of Nice 'N' Sleazy was a charming (and extraordinarily short iirc) ditty actually called "Shut Up" (can't remember the lyrics quite well enough to try repeating them, and can't find them on t'interweb unfortunately).

Don't know the artist, but that oldie "You talk too much"

Zack Richardson (teenagequiet), Thursday, 27 October 2005 19:35 (nineteen years ago)

Zack - it's by Joe Jones, and it's fabulous. Good call.

Hole had some song, I think "Awful" with the minor comment "Just shut up, you're only sixteen..."

I don't know if there's definitely a pattern where the shut up songs and the open-mouth songs line up as classic/dud or vice versa. Telling someone to shut up is simultaneously more rock and more dickish. I do think there have been rather few good songs in the "I'm finally free to speak my mind" genre, and VERY few in the "I've finally found my voice to speak my mind," although the ones that are good tend to be VERY good. Can't think of examples right now because I'm lazy.

Doctor Casino, Friday, 28 October 2005 01:59 (nineteen years ago)

I don't know why, but the beginning of Eazy-E's "Eazy Duz It" never fails to crack me up:

Crooning R&B Singer: He was once a dawg from around the way / Eeee-zeeee / but you should-
Eazy E: Bitch! Shut the fuck up! Get the fuck out of here!

I think it's the enormous grudge I hold against that bland, modern soul style. I've wanted to tell quite a few of them to shut the fuck up. Or, as the RZA once put it, "That R&B shit makes my stomach hurt."

Edward III (edward iii), Friday, 28 October 2005 02:40 (nineteen years ago)

You're right about the "thug" part - but I think it's a woman with a high voice, not a kid. Eazy-E was street and all that, but I don't think he'd be calling a little kid a bitch...

The great lost No Wave band Beirut Slump had one song that went..

"He said shuuuuuuuuuuttttt uuuuuppppppp!
Shuuuuuutttttt uuuuuppppp

Or something like that. I don't know the title, though. I don't think it was ever released.

Within that song is the WORST rhyming couplet I've ever heard! As I stated on this thread:

Worst Rhyming Lyrics Ever...

Myonga Von Bontee (Myonga Von Bontee), Wednesday, 23 November 2005 06:02 (nineteen years ago)

The lyric in question:

You talk too much You worry me to death,
You talk too much You even worry my pet

I mean, come on! What KIND of pet? Why would a pet be worried about excessive talk for chrissakes?! Why would the SINGER, for that matter? And it's not even an exact rhyme! How hard would it've beeen to spend another 30 seconds thinking up a real RHYMING rhyme that actually makes sense, like, uh, how's this: "You talk too much, something something catch your breath"? Now THAT'S a rhyme. *applauds self*

Sorry if I derailed the thread. I will now SHUT UP!

Ooh, I know: "Yakkety Yak" (Coasters)

Tell That Girl To Shut Up

by Holly Vincent
Well you got that girl and she lives with you
And she does just want you want her to
And when I call you on the phone, she says you're not there
But I know you're home-

You better tell that girl to shut up
You better tell that girl I'm gonna beat her up
You better tell that girl
You better tell that girl
You better tell that girl

Well we used to be the best of friends
Now all that's gonna have to end
But there's just one thing that I can't see
How she's got got you hanging up on me

You better tell that girl to shut up
You better tell that girl I'm gonna beat her up
You better tell that girl
You better tell that girl
You better tell that girl

Well I guess you're like that all of the time
But it takes more than that for me to loose my mind
Don't you know that I don't care?
Maybe if I hit her, maybe if I pulled her hair
Oh oh hey yey yeah

Well, she likes to seem intellectuel
And to be a musician she goes to school
And the way she acts is so uncool
I just can't stand her

You better tell that girl to shut up
You better tell that girl I'm gonna beat her up
You better tell that girl
You better tell that girl
You better tell that girl

Ooh you better tell, yeah you better tell, oh
You better tell that girl
You better tell that girl
You better tell that girl

Girl, girl, girl, girl, girl, girl

You better tell that girl to shut up
You better tell that girl I'm gonna beat her up
You better tell that girl
You better tell that girl
You better tell that girl to shut up!

Although I know it's not exactly a 'classic', what about Joe Dolce and 'Shaddapa Your Face'? I suppose the only reason people remember it is because it was on the McCain Oven Pizza adevrty thing.
Altogether now:

The Cooties - Shut Up

Jack L., Thursday, 24 November 2005 02:55 (nineteen years ago)

I mean, come on! What KIND of pet? Why would a pet be worried about excessive talk for chrissakes?! Why would the SINGER, for that matter?

No, that's the best line of the song! The pet is so totally the parrot that's sitting on Jude's shoulder in "Hey Jude." All the talking wigs out the parrot, which is trying desperately to keep up and learn a few key phrases - the continuous barrage of chatter is just too much. This bothers the singer somewhat (he likes his parrot after all) but it's not so much that the singer's worried by the parrot's worry - he's just using that as an example of how much talking is going on.

I'd like to see this song in some sort of cagematch with "Talk More Talk" by Paul McCartney though.
