Also the band Gob's next album has a song that might be a single called "Give Up Your Grudge" where they say to shut your fucking mouth, despite being real crybabies themselves. I'll destroy that as well.

This is the first one I thought of, too, mainly because he shrieks it. But he's not telling 'you' to shut up, he's talking to Fripp.

Strangely, 'Shut Up' by Madness doesn't fall into this category.

Apart from the lyrics to "Bitching": ("Got Anything To Say? No? Well Shut Up!"), the B-side of Nice 'N' Sleazy was a charming (and extraordinarily short iirc) ditty actually called "Shut Up" (can't remember the lyrics quite well enough to try repeating them, and can't find them on t'interweb unfortunately).

Hole had some song, I think "Awful" with the minor comment "Just shut up, you're only sixteen..."

I don't know if there's definitely a pattern where the shut up songs and the open-mouth songs line up as classic/dud or vice versa. Telling someone to shut up is simultaneously more rock and more dickish. I do think there have been rather few good songs in the "I'm finally free to speak my mind" genre, and VERY few in the "I've finally found my voice to speak my mind," although the ones that are good tend to be VERY good. Can't think of examples right now because I'm lazy.

I think it's the enormous grudge I hold against that bland, modern soul style. I've wanted to tell quite a few of them to shut the fuck up. Or, as the RZA once put it, "That R&B shit makes my stomach hurt."

I mean, come on! What KIND of pet? Why would a pet be worried about excessive talk for chrissakes?! Why would the SINGER, for that matter? And it's not even an exact rhyme! How hard would it've beeen to spend another 30 seconds thinking up a real RHYMING rhyme that actually makes sense, like, uh, how's this: "You talk too much, something something catch your breath"? Now THAT'S a rhyme. *applauds self*

The Cooties - Shut Up

No, that's the best line of the song! The pet is so totally the parrot that's sitting on Jude's shoulder in "Hey Jude." All the talking wigs out the parrot, which is trying desperately to keep up and learn a few key phrases - the continuous barrage of chatter is just too much. This bothers the singer somewhat (he likes his parrot after all) but it's not so much that the singer's worried by the parrot's worry - he's just using that as an example of how much talking is going on.

I'd like to see this song in some sort of cagematch with "Talk More Talk" by Paul McCartney though.
