...and are they really two different people?

To those who don't know George, read his creed and see if you can keep your blood pressure down

Seems this guy rejects anything recent that sounds like The Beatles because he prefers the original. I would never claim that. In fact, I own all those Beatles albums and love them, but I want new music within the same genre too. And I think all old Beatles fans should be a lot better at checking out recent Beatles-influenced material.

My hat is off to Geir.He is like the worlds greatest arsonist. He just sits back and watches all these many fires burning. With a minimum of effort on his part.Well, he does have to respond to about 50 threads at once. There is effort in that. But basically he just states what he likes and why he likes it and there ya have it.He's not even rude or anything.

but there's a depressing futility to both his posts and the 'outraged' ripostes that usually follow - this included!

yay -- another geir thread. what an amazingly original and productive idea.

I think maybe he is a robot like deep blue created by the norwegian government to test the reactions of web denizens to their virtualrockist software.

Scott Seward, Sunday, 9 March 2003 20:54 (twenty-two years ago)

You know,so that homebound Beatles fans will have a buddy.

Scott Seward, Sunday, 9 March 2003 20:55 (twenty-two years ago)

Bosse-De-Nage,you are now a part of it.See how viruses work?

Scott Seward, Sunday, 9 March 2003 20:56 (twenty-two years ago)

i just dont "see" how gier is any different from anyone else here, and the amount of derision he gets seems foolish. on this short bus called ILM, gier is far from the craziest. besides, i also thought people making fun of gier's picture on the other thread of evil was also cruel and childish. plus, i am programmed to defend the underdog, especially when they are undeservingly being ridiculed. beep. beep. beep. beep. beep.

Bosse-De-Nage (Bosse-De-Nage), Sunday, 9 March 2003 21:04 (twenty-two years ago)

George Starostin doesn't agree with that anymore as he wrote it several years ago. Don't hold it against him.

Evan (Evan), Sunday, 9 March 2003 21:11 (twenty-two years ago)

Well, okay...who is the craziest then?

George Starostin doesn't agree with that anymore as he wrote it several years ago. Don't hold it against him.
I suspect that some of that ideology is still embedded way to deep to extract.

Lord Custos Epsilon (Lord Custos Epsilon), Sunday, 9 March 2003 21:42 (twenty-two years ago)

the point is not who is the craziest, but that gier is not terrible and undeserving of threads like this.

As far as his critic of punk goes, I am pretty much with him.

However, with statements like this one could almost expect him to turn into some kind of Adorno of rock criticism start speaking positively about non-melodic "head music" genres such as progressive techno.

Prog rock, on the other hand, was a highly experimental, innovative genre. It's true that its creators didn't often care about the actual 'enjoyability' of their music, but then again, neither did the majority of classical composers who put their creative inspiration ahead of the public's tastes.

Which kind of lumps him with everybody else who requires "innovation". Personally, I think a lot more enjoyable music has come out the merging of already existing styles other than purist innovation.

George is a great guy and it amazes me to see just how much stuff he writes out on bands, so I can understand if every now and then he says something that he might very well mean, but taken in context out of that particular review or that particular moment it seems alarmist or pop traditionalist (dismissing collage-like music as 'not real music', the stock line about the best music being from the 60s). I haven't really asked him about this yet, but yeah I've heard he doesn't agree with it nowadays, Which is cool, cos he's been adding reviews to stuff from new-er bands like Cocteau Twins and Pixies...

Of course there will always be a soft spot in my heart for the great Mark Prindle. I was browsing his site last night not really intending to read anything but I started scanning through the review of Lou Reed's "The Raven" and couldn't stop. It was absolutely gut-bustingly funny. Just like his records. (maybe we should have a LuMP:S/D?)

three years pass...
Take sides: Geir vs Gier

(alternative spelling, not listed in the mighty overview thread:
Defend the indefensible. Geir )

StanM (StanM), Friday, 10 March 2006 18:48 (nineteen years ago)

This spelling is really alternative to say the least, not to mention wrong.

I don't think there are any threads with the correct spelling, Hongrø :)

Geir Hongro, Friday, 10 March 2006 19:13 (nineteen years ago)

Hah, rudeness isn't required to piss off dumb rock fans.

James Slone (Freon Trotsky), Friday, 10 March 2006 19:45 (nineteen years ago)

Not that I'm saying everyone here is dumb or anything. Just enough people.
