ILM Tape Trading

Is there any demand (!) or interest in starting an ILM used music department? We could sell or trade the shit[e] we don't listen to anymore, have duplicates of, or don't like, and be sure it's getting a good home, rather than vanishing into used record-store discount bins.

What say you all?

JM, Monday, 9 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Yes! Only interested in vinyl and CD though.

Dr. C, Monday, 9 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Excellent idea.

gareth, Monday, 9 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Great idea, and I just happen to have some stuff I'm about to get rid of.

Patrick, Monday, 9 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Cool - it's just like 'Swap Shop' (eg I Have: some fucked old Thompson Twins albs, Would Swap For: pristine copy of 'The Well Tuned Piano' by LaMonte Young).

Andrew L, Monday, 9 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Sounds like a good idea to me, since I'd rather trade for stuff rather than get measly $$ for my cds/vinyl at a record shop.

Nicole, Monday, 9 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Superb responses. Patrick -- list yer shit and it's a free-for-all.

JM, Monday, 9 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

I'm in...on both forum!

Mike Hanle y, Monday, 9 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Will do as soon as I get back home.

Patrick, Monday, 9 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Do Burned CDS work ? I really am judicous with my CD collection and have no ones i dont want but send me a CDR and i will burn anything in my collection. I have 125 CDS so i am not listing them.

anthony, Monday, 9 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Seeing as how this arrived to me in a dream and that as such there was no real detail involved, I don't really care who trades what -- the idea was that we could share some of the great stuff that we own that most of us can't find. CDR's sound great to me 'coz I never sell ANYTHING.

JM, Monday, 9 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

That is what i meant. I never sell CDs and my single collection is on MP3. I have 125 CDs,1500 MP3s,40 records,12 cassetes and 70 eight tracks . If anybody is looking for something, email me, i will give them my adress, and we can arrange it from there.

Ooh, "A Love Supreme" — HA-ha, my wicked plan is taking shape...

mark s, Monday, 9 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

nelly - country grammar (cd). has a scratch but plays fine.

also, anyone know if it's possible for a cd player to scratch cd's?

sundar subramanian, Monday, 9 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Sundar: generally not because of the laser, I think (though there can be really bad screwups that result in damage from laser). Quite possible due to the transport etc. though.

Mark: go to hell, ha ha. You may be a WISE OLD GEEZER but you are wrong, wrong, wrong. ;)

Josh, Monday, 9 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Ooh Sundar, I want that Nelly CD ! Let me know if you see anything on my list that you'd like in exchange.

Patrick, Monday, 9 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

I will come up w/my list soon! Can we put dibs on stuff? Is this going to turn into the board game "Pit"??

Alright Patrick Michael and I have begun this New Thing - deals have been struck, confidences exchanged. I think this is offically very cool.

(update: "supreme clientele", ludacris, and "dancehall 101" have been spoken for)...

maybe a good system wd be to keep our lists on another site, so that they're updateable?

Tracer Hand, Friday, 13 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Yeah, this is GRATE. Latest update-Calexico, At the drive-in and 2pac have been spoken for.

you could set up a thread/site as a hyperlink pool of peoples' wants lists, and maybe more useful still peoples' got it lists

i think ILM users could volantarily each help each other out here -- go to the pool/database, browse or search, owners/volunteers/shills could leave comments about each item - - knowing who's got what allows whomever to either note comment or just email (hyperthetical user) me about swap, opinion, comparison to common-ground music etc. -- I needn't reply, but parties might find this process mutually useful

this is just taking a database like all-music-guide and adding an auto-swap-meet capability -- the auto-buy link is already there, but having discussed hyperthetical musical item might lead to a less black and white or costly link

commercial interests have found it very easy to make purchasing music a push-button thing -- here we are using computers at what they are best at doing very systematically in the name of commerce, and here discussion on miriad disparate items proceeds on an ad hoc opinion basis, when your computer could just as systematically be emailing you to let you know that there's a discussion of [my pet topic list]

it's taking two established uses of cyberspace and combining them -- has someone done this -- oh, it's not commercial but it'd be useful

I find that the more i can talk to someone about some bit of music that i can't hear first but can buy from the other side of the world, the more informed my purchase/handle -- would this be more or less of a waste of time assuming that a bad buy is a waste of time and money ?

it's obvious but look, there's already another thread with ad hoc exposure of wants lists -- how about a music match-making "I LOVE Music" site ?

Didn't somebody from ILM set up an online database thingy some time ago where people could swap Cds and stuff? I lost the URL. Did anybody ever exchange anything there? I have more than 1,000 Cds and I feel that I'd like to swap half of them.

It was Alan Trewartha's fab musical swap shop

It did work, as I swapped a few things with him.

Billy Dods (Billy Dods), Monday, 2 December 2002 22:01 (twenty-two years ago) link

Thank you so much, Billy. Now I just need an import tool to dump half of my cd database in there.

how about this?
anyone want to swap homemade comps?
I've got catholic tastes but theres a few things i either just can't get enough of or i'm unwilling to spend money on 'cos i'm unsure or i can't be arsed doing the research and anyway i'm always queued 1037 on soulseek...or realistically i just don't know about.

so what're yer favourite bits of music, and how can i get them? (to audition, naturally...plus i've got hours ahead of me 'cos i'm moving to a commuter satellite)

anyone into CDr comps? I can trade stuff in a few genres or if you just want to try out some stuff you haven't heard of...

example wants: cutting edge r'n'b, undie/packpack, japanese psych, obscure funk, bastard pop, uk garage, sadcore, local stuff (ie small label stuff you think is great), current jamaican, Power pop (anyone see that very basic Magnet article?), kozmogroov, improv, mainstream rap, worst records ever, novelty, spoken word etc etc

what i'd really like is eclectic (a bit of several things, to keep me on my ears)

example haves: post-punk, r'n'b, black metal (basic), electronica, d'n'b (including quite a lot of SimR's golden age stuff), hip-hop (89-94), indie (ageing collection), world (*sigh*), reggae (dub + roots, jazz (incl. "fire music...(sic)" &, er, shit.

write to me and let me know...

gaz (gaz), Tuesday, 3 December 2002 08:14 (twenty-two years ago) link

gaz - I think Tom or one of the 12 foot lizards is intending to set up a page on this site for CDr swapping. In the meantime, you could always put some examples of what homemade comps you have to offer on the List Your Mix-CD thread.
