Songs that are sampling-friendly

By this, I mean all those songs that have a certain instrumental/vocal passage that really makes you want to sample it and use it as a looptrack on a tune of your own. Examples:

Drums:
- Led Zeppelin - When the Levee Breaks
- Nirvana - Scentless Apprentice

Bass:

- Smashing Pumpkins - I Am One
- Pixies - Debaser

Free Design's "2002 A Hit Song" - particularly the part that goes "You take a little drums, add a little bass." I can't believe no one sampled that at drum 'n bass' height (or maybe they did?).

mike a (mike a), Tuesday, 15 April 2003 16:45 (twenty-two years ago)

didn't the prodigy sample that on their first album?

schnellschnell, Tuesday, 15 April 2003 16:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Isaac Hayes - the whole Hot Buttered Soul album
Almost anything by Hall and Oates

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Tuesday, 15 April 2003 16:49 (twenty-two years ago)

I've always thought the opening bars of Elvis Costello's "Black and White World" slightly sped-up would be a damn funky sample.

Shakey Mo Collier, Tuesday, 15 April 2003 16:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Pete: That's exactly what's it about, tracks that are easy to sample and whose samples can be recognized in other people's music...

JP Almeida (JP Almeida), Tuesday, 15 April 2003 16:53 (twenty-two years ago)

the opening to "son of a preacher man" (now that i think of it didn't the geto boys do this?)

gygax! (gygax!), Tuesday, 15 April 2003 16:54 (twenty-two years ago)

st (simon_tr), Tuesday, 15 April 2003 16:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Hey, the thread said sampling-friendly. It didn't say "tell me something I don't know."

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Tuesday, 15 April 2003 17:05 (twenty-two years ago)

"the opening to "son of a preacher man" (now that i think of it didn't the geto boys do this?)"

oh man, this totally rings a bell with me too, but I'm blanking on the song...

Shakey Mo Collier, Tuesday, 15 April 2003 17:10 (twenty-two years ago)

SplendidMullet (iamamonkey), Tuesday, 15 April 2003 17:13 (twenty-two years ago)

Shakey Mo Collier, Tuesday, 15 April 2003 17:29 (twenty-two years ago)

The Bass from "Cannonball" by the Breeders.
The riff from "The Blackout of Gretely" by Gonn.

Charles McCain (Charles McCain), Tuesday, 15 April 2003 18:45 (twenty-two years ago)

The little percussion fills at the beginning of like every Bob Marley song ever make GREBT samples!

nickalicious (nickalicious), Tuesday, 15 April 2003 18:55 (twenty-two years ago)

"I've always thought the opening bars of Elvis Costello's "Black and White World" slightly sped-up would be a damn funky sample. "

oh hell yeah. one of my favorites from that album, and now that you mention it, that intro would sound awesome pitched up with Just Blaze throwing some crash cymbals over it.

Al (sitcom), Tuesday, 15 April 2003 19:47 (twenty-two years ago)

If I only had an Emu SP-1200!

boards of canada, "roy g biv" intro monsta bassline is just dying to be sampled

beth gibbons & rustin man, "romance" horn stabs are ill, ill, ill.

I would also sample the parts between songs on my MBV's Loveless.

Cub, Tuesday, 15 April 2003 19:58 (twenty-two years ago)

i have sampled Unrest and Jandek (not at the same time) with mixed results

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Tuesday, 15 April 2003 23:50 (twenty-two years ago)

I would sample the rumble from my arse after a curry and a big night on the piss.

- by the way I used to know this Crate Diggers site that had a very indepth searchable database of who was sampled by and who sampled what - well cross referecned etc.
I can no longer find it.

anyone know where that would be?????

Savin All My Love 4 u (Savin 4ll my (heart) 4u), Wednesday, 16 April 2003 01:16 (twenty-two years ago)

the jam's "start," or the bassline it's gleefully thieving, "taxman."
