What have you bought or heard with much anticipation and ended up dissapointed

Recently, and particularly following a lead from an ILM thread, I got hold of:

the Digital Disco compilation and Data 80 album and both left me somewhat confused about there worth. They're both well made, but very hard to engage with.

Other things (not thru' ILM):

two newest Gary Martin 12"s.

"Is This The Future" LP by Fatback. The title song is still the best song ever made, but thankfully I have it on a compilation, and can get rid of the this lame ass album.

The internet.

Cozen (Cozen), Sunday, 27 April 2003 19:44 (twenty-two years ago)

The Yeah Yeah Yeahs. Hype.

felicity (felicity), Sunday, 27 April 2003 19:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Data 80 sounded alright on first listen...i hadnt read much about it on ILM (or anywhere else)

i was disappointed every time i bought a new 808 State album after 'Ex:El' - didnt think much of 'Gorgeous', 'State To State' or 'Don Solaris' on first listens but they all mature pretty well

Leftfield's 'Rhythm & Stealth' was a BIT of a letdown but half the tracks were and are still great at least

stevem (blueski), Sunday, 27 April 2003 19:46 (twenty-two years ago)

The lyrics are good but musically it just sounds like X or The Cramps to me.

felicity (felicity), Sunday, 27 April 2003 19:50 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm fully expecting to be massively let down by the Yeah Yeah Yeah's Fever to Tell album, but I'm invariably going to get it anyway.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Sunday, 27 April 2003 19:51 (twenty-two years ago)

You can have mine.

felicity (felicity), Sunday, 27 April 2003 20:02 (twenty-two years ago)

Countess Revenge Of The Horned One I (and II as well). He finally got *really* good with Shining Swords Of Hate, but this is just dissappointing in all aspects. Please mr. Orlok, make some more of that magical doom/ambient and all is forgiven!

Ally (mlescaut), Sunday, 27 April 2003 20:26 (twenty-two years ago)

I started a thread on data 80 here and it didn't go anywhere. I thought it sounded alright on first listen. Today I dug it out again for the first time in a few weeks and it actually clicked.

Saint Etienne - Foxbase Alpha

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Sunday, 27 April 2003 22:44 (twenty-two years ago)

saint etienne 'finisterre', everyone here loves it but it's rubbish.

keith (keithmcl), Sunday, 27 April 2003 22:47 (twenty-two years ago)

finisterre is okay, not rubbish. I'd say its worth hanging on to.

Unlike that fucking Maquillage 12" which I bought based purely because I thought the cover looked nice.

Nik (Nik), Sunday, 27 April 2003 23:08 (twenty-two years ago)

i remember at the same occasion buying tricky's 'angels with dirty faces' and that tori amos album that comes after 'boys for pele'. both were rubbish. bad record day.

Jay K (Jay K), Sunday, 27 April 2003 23:09 (twenty-two years ago)

the bug "pressure".
man, i don't know. k-mart's compiled some good stuff before. i always fall for thinking "o this'll be good" when he has a new disc out. this time its cyber dancehall (yeah, i know, dancehall is already futuristic). but theres just no play in it. its serious serious stuff. the only track i'd voluntarily listen to again is "Fuck yrself".

gaz (gaz), Sunday, 27 April 2003 23:28 (twenty-two years ago)

"Blur" by Blur

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Sunday, 27 April 2003 23:36 (twenty-two years ago)

And "Kid A", obviously

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Sunday, 27 April 2003 23:36 (twenty-two years ago)

More Fire Crew, "Oi" and that Dizee guest spot notwithstanding.
Yoshimi and Yuka Honda, an ambient "sound" record.. why.
Dinky, 80s done right maybe but im not sure what that means to me.

the recent Jan Jelinek and Mira Calix are kind of nice but havent struck me as much more than that.

Honda (Honda), Sunday, 27 April 2003 23:57 (twenty-two years ago)

Lil Kim, "Jump off" is great as is some other stuff on the album but ultimately underwhelming (Foxy's new one is sounding better so far).

also the recent Jan Jelinek and Mira Calix are kind of nice but havent struck me as much more than that.

SplendidMullet (iamamonkey), Monday, 28 April 2003 04:16 (twenty-two years ago)

I am listening to a comp. of new NYC bands that a friend of mine put together for me, and most of 'em are pretty disappointing.

hstencil, Monday, 28 April 2003 04:44 (twenty-two years ago)

APC vs. Matthew Shipp
Lo/Hi
Boss Hog's Whiteout, but now I like it way more than any of their other stuff.

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Monday, 28 April 2003 04:52 (twenty-two years ago)

I recently heard Karen Dalton for the first time after reading much hype and was horrified by her voice. I was also substantially less impressed with Vashti Bunyan than I expected to be, but I still like it..

100th Window and Ballbreaker OWN this thread.

Forever Changes by Love. "Ooooh," said I. "Tuneful, soft yet hard 60's psychodelia. Always gets mentions in the polls. In a sale! I'll give this a go."

Little did I know that it was a shite collection of sub-60's shite, by songs that are too long, a frontman who can only sing one tune, and songs that wouldn't know a melody if they were injected in the arm with it.

All in all, shocking. Just flogged it on ebay for £4.60. The sucker!

Johnney B (Johnney B), Monday, 28 April 2003 05:05 (twenty-two years ago)

The Bank of England by Blueboy... after Unisex, this?

The Bank of England by Blueboy... after Unisex, this?

indeed. a pretty rubbish follow-up. why didn't Keith G sing all the songs? bizarre.

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Monday, 28 April 2003 05:36 (twenty-two years ago)

yankee hotel foxtrot
wasp star
stripped

maybe someday i'll get into "yhf" and "wasp star" - i don't think they're horrible or anything, i just never took to them from the get go and i haven't really been inspired to give them a third chance since. "stripped" on the otherhand suxxx. and not only cuz i was stupidly expecting an album of end to end "dirrty". there are maybe only three songs on it i can stomach.

i didn't buy any of these though, so i won't complain too strongly.

also, i could probably second "forever changes" and add "odessey & oracle" to the list. while i like them and all, they're just not as mind-blowingly great as i'd imagined.

but a list of those things could go on forever...

I loved Sigur Ros's Agaetis Byrjun, but () is a total bore to me. Strange, since they haven't changed their sound much...

Stereolab, recommended to me on ILM: just not my cup of tea. I like bits of it, but the disaffected and at times cheesy singing turns me off.
Blind Willie Johnson--'Cold was the Ground' is great, but, once again, I have a problem getting past his voice. Too gruff--and I usu don't mind a little gruffness.
