Indie that it's okay for rappers to like? (if such a thing exists...)

As an anti-matter universe version of the Def Jux: Rap that it's okay for indie rockers to like? thread, I ask this:
What indie records could a rapper safely listen to without fear of being mocked|dissed|looked down upon?
(I mean besides "alt-rappers" like De La Soul.)

god that's true

James Blount (James Blount), Tuesday, 6 May 2003 22:42 (twenty-two years ago)

(anything is okay for hip-hop types to like if they can loop it)

jess (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 6 May 2003 22:43 (twenty-two years ago)

I think any thread which uses the word "indie" as though anyone has any fuckin' idea what that even means should be shot on sight.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 6 May 2003 22:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Timbaland should check out sea and cake. they are ripe for the picking.

scott seward, Tuesday, 6 May 2003 22:44 (twenty-two years ago)

But rappers profess their love of "rock" *all the time*! Inversion no work... I bet a ton would namecheck the White Stripes (or the Strokes) if asked.

Noonday Underground

James Blount (James Blount), Tuesday, 6 May 2003 22:45 (twenty-two years ago)

jess (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 6 May 2003 22:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Didn't RZA sample Portishead on one of his Bobby Digital tracks?

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 6 May 2003 22:48 (twenty-two years ago)

I think any thread which uses the word "indie" as though anyone has any fuckin' idea what that even means should be shot on sight.
Bang Bang Bang Bang Bang Bang!
no, seriously...theres plenty of "What is Indie" threads on ILM...you'd think there'd be some consensus by now.

urge to kill rising

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Tuesday, 6 May 2003 22:50 (twenty-two years ago)

i was in the philly record exchange and these rappers/dj's(unknown to me)were flipping out over some obscure slow japanese space jam that my buddy dan was playing. they HAD to have it. can't remember what the hell it was, but it was groovy. I'm hoping this leads to my dream boredoms/killer mike collab somehow.

scott seward, Tuesday, 6 May 2003 22:50 (twenty-two years ago)

They all love Phil Collins.

Ally (mlescaut), Tuesday, 6 May 2003 23:02 (twenty-two years ago)

he's an independant man after all...

gaz (gaz), Tuesday, 6 May 2003 23:05 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm just sayin' if there's indie similar to Phil Collins, they probably like that.

Ally (mlescaut), Tuesday, 6 May 2003 23:06 (twenty-two years ago)

see British definition of indie

James Blount (James Blount), Tuesday, 6 May 2003 23:07 (twenty-two years ago)

All indie is similar to Phil Collins.

(I don't really mean that, but it seems like a good joke to make.)

Rockist Scientist, Tuesday, 6 May 2003 23:16 (twenty-two years ago)

I kinda like that new Phil Collins single *ducks*

I like it alot more than the new Coldplay single at least

James Blount (James Blount), Tuesday, 6 May 2003 23:26 (twenty-two years ago)

I've never heard Urge To Kill Rising. Fantastic name!

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 6 May 2003 23:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Lemme guess...its a supergroup made up of three members of Urge Overkill and one member of Yngwie Malmsteens Rising Force?

Lord Custos Epsilon (Lord Custos Epsilon), Tuesday, 6 May 2003 23:35 (twenty-two years ago)

*wails*

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Tuesday, 6 May 2003 23:37 (twenty-two years ago)

gdfgf, Tuesday, 6 May 2003 23:43 (twenty-two years ago)

As a hip hop fan linked to this board who's just getting into rock now...

DefJux have a relative amount of hip hop cred.
Anticon (not to be confused with antipop) do not.

There you are.

djdee2005, Tuesday, 6 May 2003 23:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Both Jay-Z and Cee-lo have admitted to enjoying the new Stephen Malkmus album in interviews. And it is a well-known fact that Xzibit is a long-time Belle and Sebastian fan.

I've got a friend in a rap group, and for some reason one of his favorite groups was Seam. He doesn't seem to be into/aware of much other indie tho.

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Wednesday, 7 May 2003 19:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Didn't RZA sample Portishead on one of his Bobby Digital tracks?

Yep ('Over'), but is Portishead considered indie?

buttch (Oops), Wednesday, 7 May 2003 20:30 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm afraid pharrell would love alot of the sad bastard stuff

Didn't he profess a deep, sincere admiration for Puddle of Mudd (thus jettisoning his credibility into a open-window-bound trajectory)?

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 7 May 2003 20:38 (twenty-two years ago)

timbaland sampled portishead, too.

'at your best (remix)'

d k (d k), Wednesday, 7 May 2003 20:50 (twenty-two years ago)

timbaland sampled portishead, too.

He's also lifted from Blondie & Devo, so he's alright with me.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 7 May 2003 21:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Alex - he's a HUUUGE America (the band, not the nation) fan

James Blount (James Blount), Wednesday, 7 May 2003 21:24 (twenty-two years ago)

That's somewhat disquieting.
