OK so I just downloaded 'Me And Giuliani Down By The School Yard' and it's really good - 9 minutes of spastic, hollowed-out, DFA-style guitar disco with a Footloose reference thrown in to boot. I don't know much about them other than the fact that they're from NY and they've just signed to Warp, which in itself seems to be a bit odd, so can anyone else shine a light?

mark p (Mark P), Saturday, 24 May 2003 13:32 (twenty-two years ago)

The eight members of !!! had grown up playing various breeds of punk and experimental music (!!! frontman Nic was vocalist for the infamous hardcore band, Yah Mos), and increasingly found themselves wanting to play music in the vein of the stuff they were dancing to. Which is not to say !!! are a punk band, nor a funk band, for that matter. They are both. And neither.

The !!! symbol was chosen, rather than a conventional band name, because it reflects the excitement shared by the band members, mixed with an intense desire to shake things up. They have toured the U.S. repeatedly, amassing a sizeable following thanks to their cathartic live shows. The years spent train-hopping, hitch-hiking and touring DIY style have forged a desire to take !!! everywhere, fast.

!!! shares three of its members with Out Hud, including Tyler Pope, who is also in LCD Soundsystem. !!! has released a 12" split EP with Out Hud, as well as a seven-inch on Hopscotch called "Dis-ease". A self-titled debut came out on GSL in 2000, which included the nine minute manifesto, "There's No Fucking Rules, Dude" - an exhortation to forget your worries and just shake your ass... dude. Got it?

!!! is John Pugh (drums), Nic Offer (vocals), Allan Wilson (percussion, horns), Mario Andreoni (guitar), Tyler Pope (guitar, keys), Justin Vandervolgen (bass, sound engineering tweaks), Dan Gorman (percussion, horns), and Jason Racine (percussion).

FYI:
!!! is pronounced as any three repetitive sounds.
Common interpretations are chicchicchic, powpowpow, uhuhuh, among many unlimited possibilities.

egroeg, Saturday, 24 May 2003 16:56 (twenty-two years ago)

The new single's really good, but my favorite thing by them is still "Instinct," from the split 12" with Out Hud. Wow. Awfully good live, too.

Press release ahoy!

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Saturday, 24 May 2003 17:26 (twenty-two years ago)

I saw 'em live in a converted art gallery in Knoxville years ago. Great show. I actually breakdanced. The played with the pope smashers and they had like split T-shirts which has to be the indiest fucking thing I've ever seen. I sometimes convince myself that that T-shirt will go for $700 in a hollywood boutique one day.

M Matos (M Matos), Saturday, 24 May 2003 18:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Tracer: Dunno, I forget. I do recall that the Make-Up also played there and did a great job. When the Scene Creamers came to the Black Cat last month on my birthday I actually got to talk to the bassist (girls that play bass = me need new pants(yes I am generic indie loser)) and that pretty much made my night, in a sense.

Tracer when did you live in Knoxville? I was only there from 96-99. Did you ever hear of the Party Of Darkness?

London saw LCD Soundsystem for the second time last night, they were playing at the launch of a new super-club, and supposed to perform at 2.15, but didn't start the build up for Beat Connection till 3.30am. I thought it was worth the wait but most other people left disappointed. Best Bit = seeing the sun rise over King's Cross as they finished...

brg30 (brg30), Sunday, 25 May 2003 15:25 (twenty-two years ago)

Millar I lived there for the first 18 years of my life, from 1974 - 1992. My parents still live off Maryville Pike, about half a mile from Mouse Ear South.

However they sound like the wrong years to be there, cause I missed "Party of Darkness" (but where did they play? the goth clubs I knew - the Vatican, the Industry, had long since closed?)

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Sunday, 25 May 2003 15:38 (twenty-two years ago)

This is a fucking beautiful record. Groovy as hell and it's the first of this punkfunk stuff to get the fragile euphoria part of dance music nailed. His voice is a bit like Bob Geldof or someone though.

Ronan (Ronan), Sunday, 25 May 2003 16:59 (twenty-two years ago)

Weekend-AH! The Happy Mondays comparisons are all off, Flowered Up are rightly revealed as the real punk funk godfathers. Great record.

Mike (mratford), Wednesday, 4 June 2003 21:41 (twenty-two years ago)

They need someone that can actually sing.

Evan (Evan), Thursday, 5 June 2003 03:01 (twenty-two years ago)

someone needs to do a family tree of people now in 'popular' bands (radio 4 etc) who were once in hardcore ones. but i can't be arsed

matthew burrows (wretcheded matt), Thursday, 5 June 2003 12:29 (twenty-two years ago)

I agree that instinct on the split 12" is their best track, but the only thing that comes close is the original version of Intensify, and I am clueless why people seem to prefer the new remix, which is okay but a little obnoxious. Me and Giulani is that rare 9 minute pop song which never stays with one part long enough. It features both a spin-in-circles laughing disco chorus and a cool shoulder shaking breakdown but neith part is allowed the time it needs to really work. I actually can't picture myself dancing to this song. The singer is pretty terrible most of the time.

ano ano (ano ano), Thursday, 5 June 2003 20:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Does the new !!! single sound like an extension of Out Hud's work, or is it a separate entity? I vote "extension" -- !!! sound enervated from the Out Hud experience, but the last half of the !!! album certainly gave hints where Out Hud would go next.

!!!, Out Hud...which came first for you?

(!!!, from Other Music NYC, many months ago...)

Erick H (Erick H), Friday, 13 June 2003 00:08 (twenty-two years ago)

I think I heard them both on the same day in January 2000. My roommate had 7"s by both groups. The early Out Hud 7"s are incredible and dubby. A comp of those is better than STREET DAD (which I like a lot). But I view Out Hud becoming more dance-oriented because of the influence of !!!. The early !!! records were rawer and punkier. So, the groups started out seperated more and have grown closer in sound. And it will continue. A new Out Hud single will feature singing. Not by Nic Offer, fortunately.

its painfully evident that the guitarist(s) in outhud are in !!!. You'd think they might bother to play somewhat differently in a different band, but what do I know?

I think theres 3-4 guys/gals from outhud who play in !!!. When I think about it, I'd say that I prefer outhud, since you dont really have to worry about terrible lyrics and singing and their music is a bit less 'funky' and more.. interesting, I suppose.

bill stevens (bscrubbins), Monday, 7 July 2003 21:19 (twenty-two years ago)

the singer from !!! is also in outhud and both bands are painfully boring and uninteresting.

Sonny A. (Keiko), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 20:24 (twenty-one years ago)

maurice fulton did a great fucking job mixing their new record.

lauren (laurenp), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 20:33 (twenty-one years ago)

a better mix would have been: NO VOCALS.

Nic needs to go...shit does he ever suck.

ddb, Wednesday, 7 April 2004 20:39 (twenty-one years ago)

I am a little worried about the new record because the band seems to think that the best song is that terrible like I give a shit like I give a fuck they play everytime now. It's really bad. Why is chk chk nic so mad? He should be about spreading his good time goofy bad dance moves instead of yelling.

Magic City (ano ano), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 20:48 (twenty-one years ago)

this counts as "fucking incredible"? i'd say decent.

N. (nickdastoor), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 21:22 (twenty-one years ago)

has the whole new album leaked then? it's not supposed to be out for a few months right.

andrew s (andrew s), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 21:40 (twenty-one years ago)

It has leaked. I enjoy it. Its pretty cool.

They need a Sylvester-like figure to sing for them. Ferget this guy's lame-ass voice.

djdee2005, Thursday, 8 April 2004 00:03 (twenty-one years ago)

glad you like it, sonny. for me, the appeal of the anger is that it's pretty fake, ultimately, that steamy bubble of irritation that can't stand up to the relentless appeal of dancing.

Sean M (Sean M), Thursday, 8 April 2004 01:16 (twenty-one years ago)

I like their singer, though I'll admit Sylvester would be better
The vocals are so relentlessly stupid I find them impervious to criticism. But more importantly, the groove/production/sonics are amazing. I'm amazed at how well they pull off the metal-ish guitar - normally that would soooo turn me off, but it really adds to the tension of the groove. I think that's just what's going on - not angry, but tense. It's clearly all about dancing. In fact, I think I might have overreacted because I hadn't danced in a while, and my roommate was gone and I was able to play it really loudly and go nuts. Good work, though, Sean, thanks a lot!!

Sonny A. (Keiko), Thursday, 8 April 2004 03:03 (twenty-one years ago)

ps if anybody knows where to find a Sylvester-like figure for my band, let me know, k thanks!!
love, sonny

Sonny A. (Keiko), Thursday, 8 April 2004 03:13 (twenty-one years ago)

haha well yes certainly the implication there is that the guy's voice will have to do until sylvester is reincarnated.

djdee2005, Thursday, 8 April 2004 03:36 (twenty-one years ago)

Pretty impressed with the album on initial listen - nothing quite doing it in the same way as ...Guiliani... however. Or Outhud for that matter

DJ Mencap (DJ Mencap), Thursday, 8 April 2004 10:01 (twenty-one years ago)

I know a Sylvester-like figure.

Nick Sylvester, Thursday, 8 April 2004 12:16 (twenty-one years ago)

Beyond that, I don't know, I think Nic Offer is pretty fucking hilarious, the perfectly unwitting, comical "serious" frontman for such a broodingly serious sound. irony just wouldn't work here i don't think. i like offer's lyrics in the same way i like rodd-keith-send-us-your-lyrics lyrics. what did george w. bush say when he met tony blair: SHIT....SCHEISSE....MERDE. reminds me of "Our Senators".

Nick Sylvester, Thursday, 8 April 2004 12:30 (twenty-one years ago)

He's not being ironic???

N. (nickdastoor), Thursday, 8 April 2004 12:47 (twenty-one years ago)

haha yeah i was gonna say!

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 8 April 2004 12:48 (twenty-one years ago)

Sonny A. (Keiko), Thursday, 8 April 2004 12:56 (twenty-one years ago)

He's not being ironic???

really, he's not.

lauren (laurenp), Thursday, 8 April 2004 14:05 (twenty-one years ago)

q: what did george bush say when he met tony blair?

a: according to !!!, "schitscheissemerde"

right.

myke boomnoise, Thursday, 8 April 2004 14:43 (twenty-one years ago)

This song doesn't strike me as all that interesting..and the singing, well, it's just silly. Is that real aggression or faux-aggression? It's hard to tell. I assumed he was being ironic, but maybe not.

As for taking away the lyrics, I think then it would become too obvious how much better OutHud is. They need to have something to differentiate themselves. I really only need one OutHud in my life, and if I can only have one OutHud, I pick OutHud.

Scott CE (Scott CE), Thursday, 8 April 2004 14:49 (twenty-one years ago)

another thing is I just bought that Rough Trade Shops Post Punk Vol. 1 thing, and realized how much of their schtick they stole from Pigbag....

rapping !!!, ugh.

i'm getting hysterica thinking about that.

(Is outhud worth getting? I've almost bought it and then chickened out like 5 times)

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Wednesday, 21 April 2004 01:43 (twenty-one years ago)

the album is pretty good, but i like their singles better.

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 21 April 2004 01:45 (twenty-one years ago)

neither outhud or !!! have really topped that first outhud 7" yet, for me.

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 21 April 2004 01:45 (twenty-one years ago)

I think the whole album sounds amazing. I still don't understand why people hate the vocals so much. I just pretend I don't understand English when I'm listening to it. Actually I do that with most pop music.

I should admit that I've only heard the first album once and I found it difficult to pay attention to. It didn't seem to have that same balance between deep-bass funky & chaotic.

Matt, what's their "schtick" ? I'm not being condescending, I don't doubt they have one - I'm just terrible at recognizing things like that. To me, they seem very much 'funky' Clash meets Happy Mondays.

Sonny A. (Keiko), Wednesday, 21 April 2004 01:56 (twenty-one years ago)

and then there's the bush and tony blair line

Oh dear.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 21 April 2004 01:58 (twenty-one years ago)

complete dissapointment with the new one.

twelve, Wednesday, 21 April 2004 02:14 (twenty-one years ago)

Matt, what's their "schtick" ? I'm not being condescending, I don't doubt they have one - I'm just terrible at recognizing things like that. To me, they seem very much 'funky' Clash meets Happy Mondays.

Um...schtick was probably the wrong word...I really just meant they sound a whole hell of a lot like Pigbag (um...also full disclosue: I've only heard 2 Pigbag songs so I might not know enough to make this statement in the first place)...same kinda itchy choppy disco guitar stuff with lots of extra bongo type percussion and the like and throbbing basslines...

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Wednesday, 21 April 2004 02:19 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, I see what you're saying, but I hardly think Pigbag is the only precedent for that. It seems just as likely to me that !!! has only heard two Pigbag songs, too, and they're listening to the same Can/James Brown records Pigbag were. Pigbag being a Pop Group related project brings to mind that band's very obvious influence. Both are funk- & dub-influenced, both drag their songs out too long, and both have shitty vocals. That's enough of a connection for me, anyway.

Sonny A. (Keiko), Wednesday, 21 April 2004 03:56 (twenty-one years ago)

What's this "might sound great in a club" business? I'm pretty fucking confident it would
...
*I don't think that it would sound good in a club at all!*

I first heard that !!! Giuliani song in a club, and it sounded remarkably good. Especially since I thought their first album was...for lack of a better word, amateurish.

I'm okay with the Bush/Blair line because it's kinda ridiculous, like he just needed something to rhyme with "merde" -- whereas I never fail to cringe at "you wonder why in Estonia they say 'hey you, you big fat pig.'"

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 14 June 2004 21:47 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm actually liking this album more than I thought I would. Prior to this, everything I've heard by !!! (admittedly not much) has all sounded the same -- which is why I prefer Out Hud. But there's some nice things happening on this album. Two thirds of the way thru, "Hello Is This Thing On" is the highlight.

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 14 June 2004 21:49 (twenty-one years ago)

!!! on 6 Mix

This week's 6 Mix on 6 Music features !!!

Broadcast: Sunday 14th November 8pm - 10pm

This Sunday's 6 Mix features the curiously named !!!, ( pronounced "chk chk chk").

The band formed in 1996 in Sacramento, California, when singer Nic Offer envisioned forming a group oriented more toward danceable music.

The band quickly grew into an eight-member ensemble, including Mario Andreoni on guitar, Offer on vocals, Justin van der Volgen on bass, Dan Gorman on trumpet and percussion, Tyler Pope on guitar, Allan Wilson on saxophone and percussion, John Pugh on drums and Jason Racine on percussion.

Together with Outhud, !!! released a split full-length debut together in 1999 and after extensive touring of the States, !!! recorded and released a self-titled album on GSL in December 2000.

In 2003, the band issued, Me and Giuliani Down by the School Yard (A True Story), which immediately won them fans in the underground scene and they followed it up with one of 2004's best records, Louden Up Now, which was released in June.

anyone heard any of the new stuff? any updates? live recordings? something?

firstworldman (firstworldman), Tuesday, 24 January 2006 18:54 (nineteen years ago)

i heard they were selling their guitars and buying sitars.

Special Agent Gene Krupa (orion), Tuesday, 24 January 2006 20:21 (nineteen years ago)

I saw them in early December and there was a lot of new stuff in the set. I've talked about them on other threads but hadn't seen this one come up yet. I am really struck, again, by the intense level of dislike that some folks have. It almost makes me question the fact that I like them.

The show they put on was pretty great. I guess they opened for Trans Am in Eugene (Oregon) a number of years back at the WOW Hall and there was like nobody there (I sure didn't hear about it, but then I don't really like Trans Am). So they were all afraid to come back but this time the place was pretty full, probably 200 people. I believe it was the first show of their new tour. Album should come out this year, I dunno.

Like I said, there's (at least) another thread about 'em under "chk chk chk" and I kinda did this same rap there. New stuff sounded about the same as the last LP. Lyrics that are easy to hate unless you're actually dancing to them and a bunch of incredible rhythmic pound from six other dudes who, according to the other thread, are "trying too hard". If only half the bands I saw tried that hard, I would be in musical heaven.
