get out

s1utsky (slutsky), Tuesday, 3 June 2003 01:54 (twenty-two years ago)

(kidding! kidding!)

s1utsky (slutsky), Tuesday, 3 June 2003 01:54 (twenty-two years ago)

ts: liking an Oasis song vs. liking a Coldplay song

Leee (Leee), Tuesday, 3 June 2003 02:14 (twenty-two years ago)

they both had good debut albums. i stand by this.

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Tuesday, 3 June 2003 02:16 (twenty-two years ago)

Hmm, "Morning Glory" doesn't appear to be on the debut. I actually just heard a snippet from my roommate's music.

I even put on OK Computer right after. Then I put on Slayer, the Locust, and Origin and began to feel a bit better about myself.

sundar subramanian (sundar), Tuesday, 3 June 2003 02:24 (twenty-two years ago)

i will listen to Parachutes a dozen times before I'll ever put on OK Computer again.

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Tuesday, 3 June 2003 02:30 (twenty-two years ago)

I only have the first six songs.

A dozen times though. Wow.

sundar subramanian (sundar), Tuesday, 3 June 2003 02:31 (twenty-two years ago)

"What's the story, morning glory?" is a question I feel prompted to ask whenever I wake up in the morning. So far I have had no response.

colin s barrow (colin s barrow), Tuesday, 3 June 2003 02:36 (twenty-two years ago)

Is Morning Glory the one that rips off R.E.M.'s 'Dedicated To The One I love'?

Chewshabadoo (Chewshabadoo), Tuesday, 3 June 2003 02:38 (twenty-two years ago)

not so puzzling if it was from their first two. puzzling thereafter.
also, coldplay's second album is as worthy as parachutes. along with doves, one the great uk releases from '02.

Chris Radford (Chris Radford), Tuesday, 3 June 2003 02:40 (twenty-two years ago)

you are bland porridge eaters. you laddle feces into your ears with giant wooden spoons. there isnt an elevator big enough for all of you. you are each bricks in a wall of crushing banality. yer mums and dads would be proud of the whole lot of you.

de@74-g0-r0und, Tuesday, 3 June 2003 02:48 (twenty-two years ago)

yes of course. *nod, smile*

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Tuesday, 3 June 2003 02:50 (twenty-two years ago)

you haven't lived until you've ladled feces with porridge buddy.

Chris Radford (Chris Radford), Tuesday, 3 June 2003 02:59 (twenty-two years ago)

everyone likes chunky style

Bosse-De-Nage (Bosse-De-Nage), Tuesday, 3 June 2003 03:01 (twenty-two years ago)

I actually heard a song on an advert soundtrack the other day that I really liked. It sounded like Ride, with delicately juddering guitars and vaguely mewling vocals.

And then my friend told me it was Coldplay. I nearly vomited. Kill me.

we live, in a beautiful worr-rrr-rrrld"

kate, Tuesday, 3 June 2003 08:05 (twenty-two years ago)

don't resist it sundar: you know that if you spent some time with oasis you'd love 'em.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Tuesday, 3 June 2003 08:36 (twenty-two years ago)

Shakermaker alone outstrips everything those mewling Tepidplay boys wrote x 10. And virtually everything else Oasis wrote post 'Maybe x 100.

Alex K (Alex K), Tuesday, 3 June 2003 08:44 (twenty-two years ago)

i love sundar threads

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Tuesday, 3 June 2003 08:55 (twenty-two years ago)

''morning glory'' isn't them at their best tho'. you really want that first alb.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Tuesday, 3 June 2003 09:28 (twenty-two years ago)

never understood the lack of love for 'Morning Glory' at the time, spose first album is better but still, some good songs on the second album

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 3 June 2003 10:09 (twenty-two years ago)

but only 2/3 good ones. whereas on the first its all good bar er, 2 or 3 songs.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Tuesday, 3 June 2003 10:13 (twenty-two years ago)

Nah, Some Might Say is the only track I'd listen to off Glory.

Alex K (Alex K), Tuesday, 3 June 2003 10:16 (twenty-two years ago)

i liked 'Hey Now'

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 3 June 2003 10:17 (twenty-two years ago)

that's terrible! so is wonderwall.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Tuesday, 3 June 2003 10:18 (twenty-two years ago)

"Champagne Supernova" is me favorite by Oasis.

Jrvision (visionjr), Tuesday, 3 June 2003 10:31 (twenty-two years ago)

"don't look back in anger" is my token oasis song.

di smith (lucylurex), Tuesday, 3 June 2003 10:32 (twenty-two years ago)

'cigarettes and alcohol' is the most important song ever written on the subject of Man.

matthew james (matthew james), Tuesday, 3 June 2003 10:33 (twenty-two years ago)

'columbia' all the way

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Tuesday, 3 June 2003 10:34 (twenty-two years ago)

U R all on crack. It's Rock N Roll Star.

This song is the be all and end all of Oasis. If it was the only song they'd ever written, they would be the greatest band in the world. Well, actually, no they wouldn't. But they would be a lot better, and a lot more true to themselves.

kate, Tuesday, 3 June 2003 10:35 (twenty-two years ago)

And their place in the universe.

kate, Tuesday, 3 June 2003 10:36 (twenty-two years ago)

Slide Away and Columbia are my faves.

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Tuesday, 3 June 2003 10:37 (twenty-two years ago)

actually, mine too

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 3 June 2003 11:27 (twenty-two years ago)

"Columbia" and "Some Might Say", because in that intro, Noel gets so close to self-parodying himself and you almost think he understands. I don't think he does though.

Nick H, Tuesday, 3 June 2003 11:38 (twenty-two years ago)

southall 'wins'!

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Tuesday, 3 June 2003 11:44 (twenty-two years ago)

*whistles idly*

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 3 June 2003 14:05 (twenty-two years ago)

"Married with Children." hands down. although i would also opine that virtually any glimmer of anything worthwhile they've done is on that first album. although there's some b-side that came later on that i remember liking okay as well.

it all went irredeemably downhill after that, although i can see where certain later songs ("Morning Glory" amongst them) might not be so offensive if heard once in a very long while, perhaps on the radio or trapped in a friend's car. or used to partially reenact that ear-cutting scene out of Reservoir Dogs.

janni (janni), Tuesday, 3 June 2003 14:17 (twenty-two years ago)

I think Def. Maybe somewhat overrated, probably because the old hipster line "I only liked their early stuff" allows people to get away with liking Oasis without feeling too embarrassed about it. The songs are good but the overbearing production REALLY gets old after a while. It also drags in the middle - I find myself skipping from "Up In The Sky" to "Cigarettes and Alcohol" almost every time. Plus Liam's voice is a bit too Lydon-lite for my taste.

Morning Glory is still their best album, despite the ickiness of "Wonderwall." The best of their b-sides are peerless, too.

Justyn Dillingham (Justyn Dillingham), Tuesday, 3 June 2003 14:52 (twenty-two years ago)

DM is definitely somewhat overrated, although i still stand by my earlier assertion that i personally like most of the songs on it better than anything else of Oa(r)sis' that i've heard. and i did give WTSMG a chance---even owned it at one point. most of it didn't grab me at all, and so i got rid of it at some point. i'll also agree that the middle portion of DM is rather boring---there's a lot i do skip over if i listen to that album (which i rarely do anymore). but most things i ever liked about Oasis were on that album---and yes, they seem to be yet another case where a lot of the B-sides outshine actual album output. agreed on that as well. :)

janni (janni), Tuesday, 3 June 2003 16:10 (twenty-two years ago)

"listen up" is fucking great song

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Tuesday, 3 June 2003 16:13 (twenty-two years ago)

''"Married with Children." hands down.''

that's a nice ending but I think that should have ended side 1, not 2. 'Slide away' would have the perfect track to end it with. after that, there is a 'throwaway' feel to 'married..'.

''I think Def. Maybe somewhat overrated, probably because the old hipster line "I only liked their early stuff" allows people to get away with liking Oasis without feeling too embarrassed about it.''

Don't! 'hipsters' might get embarrassed by liking them AT ALL. I also like many of their b-sides, which were much better than lots of alb tracks.

''The songs are good but the overbearing production REALLY gets old after a while.''

explain? what is it abt the production that makes you say this.

''It also drags in the middle - I find myself skipping from "Up In The Sky" to "Cigarettes and Alcohol" almost every time. Plus Liam's voice is a bit too Lydon-lite for my taste.''

no it doesn't. those are excellent tracks. I can see where you're coming from w/ the lydon comparison but they are diff in that Lydon just shouts much more. Liam attempts to actually sing words (both are equally valid as 'vocalists', of course).

''The best of their b-sides are peerless, too.''

yup. but i said that already.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Tuesday, 3 June 2003 16:30 (twenty-two years ago)

side 1 and side 2? how quaint ;)

point being Married With Children would sound very weird in the middle of the CD

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 3 June 2003 16:33 (twenty-two years ago)

not weird (Oasis never did anything out of the ordinary really) but its a v nice 'end of side' track.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Tuesday, 3 June 2003 16:44 (twenty-two years ago)

i performed "married with children" at a high school assembly once. this is a dark secret.

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Tuesday, 3 June 2003 16:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Yanc3y: why? it's got some of the best lyrics they've ever done! :)

janni (janni), Tuesday, 3 June 2003 17:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Masterplan is an awesome compiltation. I'd take Oasis over Radiohead anyday and you all know how much I hate Coldplay so that goes without saying. One "Going Nowhere", "Talk Tonight", "Half the World Away", "Listen Up" etc etc pack a hundred times more emotional punch than any shit Chris Martin sings about.

Calz (Calz), Tuesday, 3 June 2003 17:09 (twenty-two years ago)

I dumped all of DM, OK Computer, and Rush Of Blood... onto my mp3 listening pile a couple of weeks ago and the only survivors now are "Up In The Sky" and "Clocks".

Chris Barrus (Chris Barrus), Tuesday, 3 June 2003 20:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Clocks is great

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Tuesday, 3 June 2003 23:40 (twenty-two years ago)

"Clocks" is great, yes. Too bad about the rest of their songs. (Actually, "Trouble" is okay, but I wouldn't choose to listen to it.)

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 3 June 2003 23:55 (twenty-two years ago)

i thought i liked clocks too, but its radio omnipresence has alerted me to its massive annoyingness.

Leee (Leee), Wednesday, 4 June 2003 05:53 (twenty-two years ago)

Is _Clocks_ the one that sounds JUST LIKE _Sing_ by Blur?

Chris, give _Beautiful World_ a listen, I think you might like that.

I think it would be more interesting if more people contributed to this thread who *didn't* normally like Oasis or Coldplay or the like. I mean, it's one thing for fans to pick their favourite song, but it's more interesting when non-fans pick a song - not necessarily "The Big Hit" which everyone likes, but pick an atypical song that they don't hate.

kate, Wednesday, 4 June 2003 08:50 (twenty-two years ago)

I find the love/hote Oasis thing really interesting. In a world of greater musical tolerence, Oasis still get a hard time. Maybe it's the age - all the 14-16 yr olds who used to listen to Oasis are now 22-24, and so have a nostalgic "We love them" attitude, while the haterz still hate, only more so. And because they're still a current band (just about) it seems people are reluctant to reassess the first three albums. (Yes, first three - I still think Be Here Now isn't as bad as people make out. Hardly DM, but certainly not as big a dud as we all remember.)

PredictionL: give it twenty years, the'll be as big, and as well remembered, as Slade.

Johnney B (Johnney B), Wednesday, 4 June 2003 12:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Ah, you mean: not at all, then. Cool.

kate, Wednesday, 4 June 2003 12:12 (twenty-two years ago)

ha ha kate you know that slade are remembered whereas say S3 are not even in the map (but that need not be such a bad thing).

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Wednesday, 4 June 2003 13:16 (twenty-two years ago)

i can't stand 'Clocks' now - over-saturation i guess

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 4 June 2003 13:43 (twenty-two years ago)

I mean, it's one thing for fans to pick their favourite song, but it's more interesting when non-fans pick a song - not necessarily "The Big Hit" which everyone likes, but pick an atypical song that they don't hate.

I agree, but the thing is that given the way I feel about Coldplay in general (ie "RUN FOR THE HILLS!!!! IEEEEEEEEE!!!!!!") it is very very unlikely I will ever hear anything besides their hits.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 4 June 2003 17:43 (twenty-two years ago)

"Clocks" blows. Only Coldplay song I like is Yellow (it's about an STD!). Just like any proper American, the only Oasis songs I like are "Wonderwall" and "Live Forever."

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Wednesday, 4 June 2003 23:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Don't buy the anti-hype. Oasis is great. Superb, well-constructed powerpop that doesn't forget the power. Had the records not sold well, and had they lacked their knack for shameless self-promotion, the records would be lauded to the skies like Big Star's & Sloan's by the hip elite.

John Bullabaugh (John Bullabaugh), Thursday, 5 June 2003 01:59 (twenty-two years ago)

Had the records not sold well, they probably wouldn't have made such bloated, over-/badly-produced follow-ups.

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Thursday, 5 June 2003 02:03 (twenty-two years ago)

five years pass...

revive to make a minor point

the only song that i really like on morning glory (the only album i bothered to listen to) is 'cast no shadow.'

youre welcome

Drugs A. Money, Friday, 27 June 2008 23:52 (seventeen years ago)

i still get off on saying pulp are way better than these guys are & people being like pulp whats pulp but truth is oasis has some fun tunes

deeznuts, Friday, 27 June 2008 23:55 (seventeen years ago)

It's a major pillar of my (rather muddled) musical philosophy that Oasis are basically irredeemable. Though I'll just about give you Live Forever.

chap, Saturday, 28 June 2008 00:36 (seventeen years ago)

People who can't enjoy Oasis on some level must live a life devoid of fun (or cocaine).

Popture, Saturday, 28 June 2008 10:57 (seventeen years ago)

^^^ This guy knows what's going on!

Party Sausage, Saturday, 28 June 2008 11:00 (seventeen years ago)

Hahahahahah
OMG call the medics! You liked an Oasis song!
Take the pulse doc!

Bimble Is Still More Goth Than You, Saturday, 28 June 2008 13:23 (seventeen years ago)

I sold the CD's it's ALL YOUR FAULT

Bimble Is Still More Goth Than You, Saturday, 28 June 2008 13:24 (seventeen years ago)

I mean, it's one thing for fans to pick their favourite song, but it's more interesting when non-fans pick a song - not necessarily "The Big Hit" which everyone likes, but pick an atypical song that they don't hate.

I find this not interesting at all. It's just a matter of "I want to tell everybody how much I hate this band, so that's why I make sure to pick a favourite track that doesn't sound like them at all". It's pathetic, actually.

Geir Hongro, Saturday, 28 June 2008 15:55 (seventeen years ago)

?? or maybe they really do hate the way the band typically sounds

deeznuts, Saturday, 28 June 2008 15:58 (seventeen years ago)

Nice to see Geir calling people who make perverse decisions about bands they don't like pathetic, tho.

Noodle Vague, Saturday, 28 June 2008 19:12 (seventeen years ago)

Jay-Z does Wonderwall.
