Can the laptop IDM set please leave the noise to the "bored with hardcore" people and get back to making us dance?

I really don't like "noise" that comes from the Powerbook rockers.

but but but mr millar! but what about the new number remixes and the erase errata remixes??? those are butt rocking floorshakers! also all the neo-berlin jack things and isn't the c. vogel contingent (someone please make up a name for these peeps) just the international precursor to tigerbeat?

vahid (vahid), Friday, 13 June 2003 23:21 (twenty-two years ago)

absolutely fecking classic thread!!

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Friday, 13 June 2003 23:24 (twenty-two years ago)

What/who precisely constitues "neo-berlin jack things"?

I have always lumped Vogel in with the Edinburgh guys because a lot of his early work came out on Sativa.

Mike Taylor (mjt), Friday, 13 June 2003 23:27 (twenty-two years ago)

well, i wanted to get away from precision by saying "things" but ... you could start w/ din-st or dancier bpitch artists or aeox or etc.

vahid (vahid), Friday, 13 June 2003 23:36 (twenty-two years ago)

Also, there is definitely a dance floor thread the runs through IDM. You do not hear it often, but I have heard it. The two main things I think of in regards to that is when I saw Funkstorung do a DJ set at Motor in 2000 (kid606 was playing lap-top 2livecrew cuts up in the next room and was sucking major ass, even then) and they were bring some thunder IDM style. They dropped a lot of bangers, tracks that were definitely IDM but not the fey crap childhood melody tracks that have kind of wrecked IDM in most people’s eyes. The tracks that stood out most to me was the Gescom Vs. Ad Vanz remix 12" that came out on Fat Cat about 5 years ago, as well some of the banging tracks from Tri Repetae.

I also saw Mira Calyx open for Plaid a year or two ago. She was not much of a DJ but by the end of her set she dropped some very hard tracks. She finished up with some Phoenicia remixes that were absolutely killer. IDM has the dance floor potential if people would choose to pursue the direction, but it has become such a bedroom stoner scene that people only make downtempo tracks.

Mike Taylor (mjt), Friday, 13 June 2003 23:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Jon Williams (ex machina), Saturday, 14 June 2003 16:42 (twenty-two years ago)

Jon, there is nothing fagtastic about making noise with a power book.

Mike Taylor (mjt), Saturday, 14 June 2003 23:11 (twenty-two years ago)

my response to all recommendations regarding Bpitch/modern laptop bangers/really excellent glitch/electro-anything is this: If they hadn't all started putting big hickeys on mule penises back in 2001, I might still be paying attention. But lately everything I try to order from Forced Exposure is a big fucking disappointment.

Hardware sequencing is the future. Laptops and VST are like the seven-string fretless locking tremolo w/handle guitars of techno (EG used predominantly by wankers to make crap tunes that are only fun for fellow wankers), and please don't even pretend that actual humans dance to Cristian Vogel. I like his music a lot, and he makes groovy beats sometimes, but I can't imagine what sort of drugs I'd have to be on to get up and start dancing to that boggling mess, unless I was trying to illustrate some sort of point.

Millar (Millar), Saturday, 14 June 2003 23:35 (twenty-two years ago)

Just think if it'd been called "Intelligent Beat Music" (reasonably accurate) instead of "Intelligent Dance Music" ("BUT LIKE YOU CAN'T DANCE TO THIS SHIT! I WANT MY MONEY BACK MOTHERFUCKERS! LUKE VIBERT WILL HAVE HIS DIRTY REVENGE ON KID606 YOU FUXX!"). Then people could not only be semantically closer, they could call it "IBM" and that's only one letter in the alphabet away from "HAL" and I forget what I was going on about.

Here's a picture of the Beatnik Bandit.

Nate Patrin (Nate Patrin), Sunday, 15 June 2003 01:33 (twenty-two years ago)

the 'idm = new fourtrack' thing is OTM because, just like a fourtrack, it's all about charm. Perhaps you're feeling an oversaturation of laptop noise records and that annoys you. I'm not. I can't afford enough records to be sick of anything, I'd rather just check something else out. If average joe justboughtanpowerbook wants to try his hand at something new, I'm all for it. I'm sure he'll add his own charm to it that the analog noise guy won't, and if not at least he tried. Just have a little faith in people.

Jerkcity is genius. This thread is genius. It's made me - no joke - actually miss working in IT, and think about returning to it.

I liked the laptop noise I saw at NFF. But a lot of the textures these people work with are so uninteresting and seem to lack a framework to make it anything other than disconnected wank.

laptop idm needs more lively peripherals. i think most rockers i know dislike the laptop because they don't know what the person is doin up there. there's not enough head banging and smoking circuitry.
