As in you each pick a record that you think I should own based on what you know of my taste and expect I may not have otherwise come accross...

alan braxe & fred falke ~ love lost

gareth (gareth), Sunday, 15 June 2003 08:07 (twenty-two years ago)

Slowest thread ever. You overestimate our ability to anticipte your tastes, obviously.

I'll say Hem - Rabbit Songs, but not because I imagine it'll fit nicely with your tastes. It's because it's impossible not to like.

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Sunday, 15 June 2003 08:14 (twenty-two years ago)

I've not heard of any of these, which is fantastic.

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Sunday, 15 June 2003 19:38 (twenty-two years ago)

cerberus shoal - ...and farewell to hightide

gareth (gareth), Sunday, 15 June 2003 19:49 (twenty-two years ago)

(Jel - you like Komeit?)

Cozen (Cozen), Sunday, 15 June 2003 20:46 (twenty-two years ago)

How about a few more clues Nick?

How many of the things on My big list. did you get in the end and what did you think of them?

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Monday, 16 June 2003 08:25 (twenty-two years ago)

The Boo Radleys - Everything's Alright Forever. (See, I'm not going to be mean and say Chapterhouse - Bloody Music, oh wait, I just did) ;-)

kate (kate), Monday, 16 June 2003 08:30 (twenty-two years ago)

The correct answer is Spirit of Eden! ha!

Adam A. (Keiko), Monday, 16 June 2003 08:36 (twenty-two years ago)

Oooh! I just got Spirit of Eden this weekend, and it's lovely. Hang on, where is that thread?

kate (kate), Monday, 16 June 2003 08:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Right. From my big list I got records by these people (specific examples are mentioned if they're the exact one from the list I got) and I will give them eacha cursory and meaningless star value (out of five!) to show much I liked them...

I am currently very much being rocked by Four Tet and Manitoba (as if you did not know), that !!! single, the new Radiohead, Cornelius, Susumu Yokota, Loose Fur, Mouse On Mars, Medicine8, Gillian Welch and Tilt by Scott Walker.

Perrenial faves include Talk Talk's later stuff, The Stone Roses, Orbital, The Clash, In A Silent Way by Miles Davis, A Northern Soul by The Verve, Spiritualized, Nixon & Is A Woman by Lambchop, Dig Your Owbn Hole by The Chemical Brothers, Grace by Jeff Buckley, 3ft High And Rising, If You're Ready (Come Go With Me) by The Staple Singers, What's Going On?, Paul's Boutique, Dismemberment Plan.

I am currently waiting on recieving the O.Rang album mentioned above, DI Go Pop by Disco Inferno and Independancy as mentioned above. I am thinking about getting some Man Or Astroman. I am intrigued by and want to know more about / listen to David Sylvain, American Analogue Set, Out Hud, New Pornographers, Aspera, The Rapture, Neil Michael Hagerty, The Ruts, Mountain Goats...

I guess I'm looking for stuff that's either from before my time (I am 24) or else that I might've missed or that might be in a totally different area to what I generally like but that I'd still think was amazing. Recommend away!

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Monday, 16 June 2003 09:01 (twenty-two years ago)

Adam Ant - Hits

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Monday, 16 June 2003 09:03 (twenty-two years ago)

charles mingus - let my children hear music

gareth (gareth), Monday, 16 June 2003 09:04 (twenty-two years ago)

get the merzbox

geeta (geeta), Monday, 16 June 2003 09:07 (twenty-two years ago)

"Future days – can *****"

Have you tried Faust or Neu! yet?

"Remain in light – talking heads ****"
"Music for airports – brian eno **** (plus got WEarm Jets [***] and Another Green World[*****])"

Would it be too obvious to suggest My Life In The Bush Of Ghosts; Taking Tiger Mountain By Strategy; or Before And After Science?

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Monday, 16 June 2003 09:08 (twenty-two years ago)

I got Neu!'s first LP but it is still waiting to be played. And it's not too obvious to recommend anything!

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Monday, 16 June 2003 09:12 (twenty-two years ago)

You really need at least one of the first three Roxy Music albums, I'd suggest Street Life.

As for David Sylvian, he has a comprehensive anthology, Everything or nothing which covers most aspects of his work between 1980 and 2000. I will think about some more suggestions later.

Billy Dods (Billy Dods), Monday, 16 June 2003 09:13 (twenty-two years ago)

".... it's not too obvious to recommend anything!"

Oh well, in that case the answer's simple: Trout Mask Replica

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Monday, 16 June 2003 09:13 (twenty-two years ago)

Got TMR, played it once. Unimpressed. Will revisit!

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Monday, 16 June 2003 09:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Also intrigued by Tears For Fears and Cabaret Voltaire.

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Monday, 16 June 2003 09:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Also (slightly more personalised answer rather than normal stok response) worth investigating if you haven't already:

The Fall - Early Singles, Live At The Witch Trials, Totally Wired
Magazine - Real Life, The Correct Use Of Soap, Rays & Hail / Where The Power Is
Pere Ubu - Terminal Tower, The Modern Dance
The Slits - Cut

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Monday, 16 June 2003 09:26 (twenty-two years ago)

if we are going for the fall then i would say "hip priest & kamerads", though i have soft spot for "totales turn (its now or never)"

gareth (gareth), Monday, 16 June 2003 09:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Nick if you enjoy that Def Jux stuff then try and get MF Doom - Operation:Doomsday. it's roughly a million times better than anything Jux-related.

(not always easy to find over here but easily orderable from http://www.subversemusic.com/)

pete b. (pete b.), Monday, 16 June 2003 09:40 (twenty-two years ago)

I remember Dan Snaith (Manitoba) mentioning that MF Doom album somewhere actually.

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Monday, 16 June 2003 10:59 (twenty-two years ago)

Looking at the later additions to My big list. in the light of your other preferences Nick, I'd also like to suggest that if you want to try King Crimson maybe you should go for "Discipline" first rather than "In The Court Of The Crimson King".

Oh and although I think "In the plane over the sea ? neutral milk hotel" is a superb album myself, somehow I can't see you giving it more than a "***"!

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Monday, 16 June 2003 12:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Funny you should say that - I got 'Airplane Over The Sea' the other week and was somewhat nonplussed!

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Monday, 16 June 2003 12:47 (twenty-two years ago)

'In The Plane Over The Sea'. Ahem.

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Monday, 16 June 2003 12:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Well, you only gave: Sunshine hit me – the bees ***1/2; Sunflower / surf’s up – the beach boys **; Skylarking – xtc ***; so I didn't figure it would be your cup of tea!

I'd be interested to know what you think of Flaming Lips / Mercury Rev / Super Furry Animals 'though.

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Monday, 16 June 2003 12:58 (twenty-two years ago)

I really Flips from Satellite through to Soft Bulletin, incl. Zaireeka. Didn't like Yoshimi at all. I've got all the M Rev albums but I'm not sure how; I only really like See You On The Other Side and half of D.Songs. I love Radiator by SFA but am non-plussed by the rest of their stuff, though I own most of it.

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Monday, 16 June 2003 13:01 (twenty-two years ago)

I really like Flips...

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Monday, 16 June 2003 13:04 (twenty-two years ago)

Well Nick - I suggest that whatever Geir suggests, you should do the opposite!

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Monday, 16 June 2003 13:08 (twenty-two years ago)

The Twelve Dreams of Doctor Sardonicus - Spirit.

Alex K (Alex K), Monday, 16 June 2003 13:24 (twenty-two years ago)

I suggest that whatever Geir suggests, you should do the opposite!

and then flip it and reverse it!

t\'\'t (t\'\'t), Monday, 16 June 2003 13:27 (twenty-two years ago)

TOTAL COELO

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 16 June 2003 13:49 (twenty-two years ago)

"total"?
8=0

t\'\'t (t\'\'t), Monday, 16 June 2003 14:08 (twenty-two years ago)

oh ok, in that case i'll heartily recommend ZZ TOTO

t\'\'t (t\'\'t), Monday, 16 June 2003 14:11 (twenty-two years ago)

That was their US name. Stupid, yes, but the music still is FANTASTIC.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 16 June 2003 14:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Deltron 3030 - 3030

nickalicious (nickalicious), Monday, 16 June 2003 14:25 (twenty-two years ago)

Got it nickalicious! Tis good; I prefer Handsome Boy Modelling school though.

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Monday, 16 June 2003 14:30 (twenty-two years ago)

For the Talking Heads/Eno thing, David Byrne's record 'The Catherine Wheel' is wonderful. Also 'Cluster and Eno', maybe.

Andrew Thames (Andrew Thames), Monday, 16 June 2003 14:31 (twenty-two years ago)

Have you got anything by Dave Douglas, Nick S?

t\'\'t (t\'\'t), Monday, 16 June 2003 14:36 (twenty-two years ago)

No I have not. Never heard of 'im.

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Monday, 16 June 2003 14:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Also swinging around that Byrne / Eno axis:

Adrian Belew - Desire Of The Rhino King
David Bowie - Low, Heroes

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Monday, 16 June 2003 14:44 (twenty-two years ago)

I have both the Bowie albums.

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Monday, 16 June 2003 14:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Dave Douglas ... Never heard of 'im.

Trumpet player. One of the very best these days. Songs for Wandering Souls and/or Charms of the Night Sky, both on Winter&Winter, both lusciously lyrical and very well played, could be a good place to start.

t\'\'t (t\'\'t), Monday, 16 June 2003 14:48 (twenty-two years ago)

"I have both the Bowie albums."

How many stars do they get?

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Monday, 16 June 2003 14:49 (twenty-two years ago)

Low gets ****, Heroes gets ***, except the title track which gets *****.

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Monday, 16 June 2003 15:10 (twenty-two years ago)

yes Cozen, Komeit are great.

jel -- (jel), Monday, 16 June 2003 15:12 (twenty-two years ago)

"Low gets ****, Heroes gets ***, except the title track which gets *****."

I can almost guarantee you'll like the Adrian Belew, Byrne / Eno, Eno and King Crimson suggestions then.

I'd also recommend Talking Heads' Fear Of Music if you haven't got that one.

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Monday, 16 June 2003 15:20 (twenty-two years ago)

Nick, have you heard Prefuse 73? (spec. Vocal Studies + Uprock Narratives)

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 16 June 2003 15:27 (twenty-two years ago)

haha!

pete b. (pete b.), Monday, 16 June 2003 15:56 (twenty-two years ago)

I've got Prefuse 73's last two albums, plus the Savath & Savalas one. Ask Simon Reynolds!

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Tuesday, 17 June 2003 07:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Hey Nick, got any Durutti Column?

Rob M (Rob M), Tuesday, 17 June 2003 09:06 (twenty-two years ago)

I got LC about a month ago; it's pretty good, but I can't imagine wanting much more by him/them.

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Tuesday, 17 June 2003 09:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Fair enough really... typically you got one with his worst singing on it. I couldn't live without most of their/his stuff but it's an acquired taste.

Rob M (Rob M), Tuesday, 17 June 2003 13:03 (twenty-two years ago)

oh yeah forgot about the reynolds dust-up!

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 17 June 2003 14:21 (twenty-two years ago)

I must apologise for that - I've never really listened to Ludacris. He could be fucking God's gift to music for all I know.

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Tuesday, 17 June 2003 14:29 (twenty-two years ago)

i think you will love "69" by a r kane from the above and that other thread

and "my life in the bush of ghosts" (byrne & eno)

also if you haven't bought any stereolab yet, do so - anything from 1995 onwards

zebedee (zebedee), Tuesday, 17 June 2003 17:07 (twenty-two years ago)

if stereolab then either emperor tomato ketchup or refried ectoplasm (switched on vol2), or maybe space age bachelor pad music

gareth (gareth), Tuesday, 17 June 2003 17:11 (twenty-two years ago)

(ha ha i was going to end my last post with 'ignore gareth's inevitable riposte')

zebedee (zebedee), Tuesday, 17 June 2003 17:13 (twenty-two years ago)

Mice Parade, Mokoondi.

That's a solid recommendation for anyone, really, since they're not very well known. (I got the CD free with my Magnet subscription two years ago.) Take some of the organic instrumentation from Four Tet's Pause and turn it into a full-on hippie-jazz groove.

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 17 June 2003 18:20 (twenty-two years ago)

the whole late 70's/early 80's axis of Remain in Light, Fear of Music, Bowie's Berlin albums, My LIfe in the Bush of Ghosts, King Crimson's Discipline & Beat, Gabriel's IV, all of Eno's work, as well as all the other 'art rock' of the time was the total underpinning of my musical taste and stuff that I still return to with surprising regularity. It's all good shit, really well made, and not very confined genre-wise (ie: people with all kinds of tastes tolerate it when I put it on). So I'd triple the recommendations for such stuff listed above.

anthony kyle monday (akmonday), Tuesday, 17 June 2003 20:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Immersion - Low Impact?

sundar subramanian (sundar), Tuesday, 17 June 2003 20:31 (twenty-two years ago)

But maybe you could live without it, shrug. Do you have any Pan Sonic?

sundar subramanian (sundar), Tuesday, 17 June 2003 20:34 (twenty-two years ago)

super furry animals-mwng

robin (robin), Tuesday, 17 June 2003 20:36 (twenty-two years ago)

Supercollider "Dual"

donut bitch (donut), Tuesday, 17 June 2003 20:59 (twenty-two years ago)

I have Mwng and "69" and like both plenty(though I much prefer "i"!). I think the Eno/Talkings Heads/Gabriel/Bowiue/etcetera axis-thing needs exploring.

I just got DI Go Pop (Disco Inferno), Herd Of Instinct (O.Rang) and Tilt by Scott Walker and all three are very much rocking my world at the moment, as is Hex by BP (Amazon just emailed to say they can't get Independancy and I can't find it on Netsounds, *grumble*).

Thank you very mcuh to everyone for all the thoughtful and thought-provoking suggestions, btw!

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Wednesday, 18 June 2003 07:39 (twenty-two years ago)

I wish I could have had some to add but I have not been feeling particularly inspired as of late.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 18 June 2003 07:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Ah, Neddy. Every time I look up someone I'm interested in on Allmusic these days (Insides, Young Gods, Boredoms amongst others) it's your name (or Jason Ankeny's) that's at the bottom of the (invariably 4.5 star) review. So I would say "Pull yer finger out and get recommending!" only you kind of already are, in a roundabout way.

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Wednesday, 18 June 2003 07:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh, and kudos and mucho respecto etcetera to Adam A for his rather tongue-in-cheek suggestion upwards... A kiss to the first person to say Turns Into Stone by The Stone Roses or A Northern Soul by The Verve... xxx

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Wednesday, 18 June 2003 07:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Well, that's a good thing, then. (Er, don't call me Neddy, though, I REALLY dislike it. Thanks. :-))

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 18 June 2003 07:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Right you are Neddulika. =oþ

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Wednesday, 18 June 2003 07:49 (twenty-two years ago)

(Apologies for my rather forced joviality this morning, it is very quiet at work today and entertainment/distraction is being found whereever possible!)

Oh, and what on earth are you doing up at this time? Isn't it like 4am or something where you are?

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Wednesday, 18 June 2003 07:51 (twenty-two years ago)

2 am. I was tired from work and slept through the evening and woke up at 11:30 pm and now I can't get to sleep again, although I seem to finally be reaching that state. Good thing too.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 18 June 2003 08:04 (twenty-two years ago)

I can imagine. Insomnia is a hellish, hellish thing.

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Wednesday, 18 June 2003 08:10 (twenty-two years ago)

It's not something I have all the time. But there is an occasional bout.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 18 June 2003 08:28 (twenty-two years ago)

"the whole late 70's/early 80's axis of Remain in Light, Fear of Music, Bowie's Berlin albums, My LIfe in the Bush of Ghosts, King Crimson's Discipline & Beat, Gabriel's IV...."

I'd never heard the Gabriel album mentioned in that context before and I've never heard it - but I think I'll be getting a copy now, many thanks Anthony - maybe I can return the favour...?

Also very firmly in this category are the first three solo albums by Adrian Belew, who was the guitarist (originally / previously with Frank Zappa) who played on Stage, Lodger, Remain In Light, The Name Of This Band Is..., Tom Tom Club and Catherine Wheel amongst many others, before becoming a member of King Crimson from Discipline and Beat onwards.

Sadly these are all oop at present but there is a great comp. of the best bits of the three called Desire Of The Rhino King which I can highly recommend.

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Wednesday, 18 June 2003 08:42 (twenty-two years ago)

laika? i get a feeling you might just like them

gaz (gaz), Wednesday, 18 June 2003 08:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Nick, this may or not be an obvious one, but do ya have Herbie Hancock's Sextant?

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Wednesday, 18 June 2003 16:34 (twenty-two years ago)

I have indeed got Sextant, and also Thurst and Headhunters. I like Headhunters best (if only for the crazy water-bottle type sound on Watermelon Man). Must revist Sextant actualyl, not listened to it in probably three years.

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Thursday, 19 June 2003 07:19 (twenty-two years ago)

Would I like The Boredoms?

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Thursday, 19 June 2003 08:59 (twenty-two years ago)

Nick, I think you would!! But I would start with the most recent one, Vision Creation Newsun. The one before that (Super AE) is great too and in a similar vein, but has some almost metal-ly moments and I'm not sure that's your bag. But yeah, I think you'd like the extended, propulsive sound they achieve, with a pleasing overlay of electronic squelches and dub-like effects. They just have a really joyous reaching vibe that I think you'd appreciate.

Also, the two Harmonia albums - s/t and Deluxe - seem up yr alley if you haven't heard 'em.

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Thursday, 19 June 2003 18:04 (twenty-two years ago)

King Tubby and Harry Mudie in Dub Conference vol 1-3
okay, so these are actually 3 cds, but I couldn't pick one over the others. Great dub workouts by Tubby (as usual), excellent, unique production by Mr. Mudie--even the use of strings works well, and top-notch playing by the some of the best Jamaican musicians ever.

oops (Oops), Thursday, 19 June 2003 18:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Also I wonder if Nick has any African Head Charge stuff?

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Thursday, 19 June 2003 18:41 (twenty-two years ago)

and I wonder if he's heard any Madlib stuff?

oops (Oops), Thursday, 19 June 2003 18:49 (twenty-two years ago)

sounds interesting nick,i've added that ar kane album to my huge list of things i must check out at some stage

robin (robin), Thursday, 19 June 2003 18:59 (twenty-two years ago)

get any of my suggestions yet nick?

gareth (gareth), Friday, 20 June 2003 07:22 (twenty-two years ago)

I've not bought anything suggested yet (and probably wont till the end of the month / start of next month, for easily guessable fiscal reasons!) but I am making notes and looking stuff up. There's some really great recommendations here, thank you to all of you! I have no African Head Charge stuff, but the name sounds fantastic, so I shall investigate. I just added a Quasimoto (Madlib) album to my Amazon wish list after reading the Manitoba editorial thing on Amazon, in which Dan Snaith sings it's praises.

(I've also ordered copies of Independancy from Amazon [again] and HMV [what the hell] just to see if both of them pestering the label/stocker/whoever will result in it suddenly becomming available again - it worked with Laughing Stock so you never know...)

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Friday, 20 June 2003 08:27 (twenty-two years ago)

nick what did you listen to before you came here?

Chip Morningstar (bob), Friday, 20 June 2003 08:40 (twenty-two years ago)

i'm guessing that's The Unseen you've added to the list? if so you're in for a treat, it's wonderful. weird + accessible in equal measures. shit, if this Dan Snaith bloke has recommended both Doom + Quas, i might have to go and get the Manitoba album after all.

(and heads-up for the Doom/Madlib collaboration released later this year! :-)

pete b. (pete b.), Friday, 20 June 2003 08:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Chip; Beastie Boys, Stone Roses, old soul (Stax singles, Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder, Hot Buttered Soul) Orbital, Miles Davis, Spiritualized, MBV, The Verve, De La Soul, Tribe Called Quest, Public Enemy, Embrace, Chemical Brothers, Flaming Lips, Mercury Rev, Primal Scream, Bob Marley, MC5, Godspeed...

Essentially since I've been here 2 years and a bit, on and off) I've just extended my interest in blippy electronic stuff, woozy dreamy odd pop, jazz, reggae, postrock, hip hop and, well, everything... It's like before I had my toe in the water of all these things, and now I'm learning to swim. I have no shame whatsoever in repeatedly using this place as a recommendation forum, because there are some great people with great passion and great taste around!

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Friday, 20 June 2003 09:11 (twenty-two years ago)

seven years pass...

oh man! this is sick mouthy bait if ever i saw it...

http://pitchfork.com/news/41709-caribou-and-four-tet-plan-split-release

Four Tet and Caribou Plan Split Release

Listen to both artists' contributions to the release on Hebden's Text Records

Four Tet: "Pinnacles"

Daphni (Caribou's Dan Snaith): "Ye Ye"

Nialler9 informs us that Four Tet and Caribou's Dan Snaith are readying a split vinyl release through Four Tet main man Kieran Hebden's Text Records imprint. Above, you can stream a radio rip of Four Tet's shuffling, groove-heavy contribution, "Pinnacles", that was played on BBC Radio host Giles Peterson's show recently (via Consequence of Sound); you can also check out Snaith's contribution under his new alias Daphni, the dark, driving "Ye Ye". According to Caribou's Soundcloud page, the split is "soon to be released".
