New York Noise

Just got this (the new Soul Jazz mostly Ze / 99 record comp) and my fist impression is: very good. A lot more eclectic than expected - less disco-y stuff, more punky and jazzy

I like the fact that none of the tracks have appeared elsewhere, coz I was worrying that these Disco Not Disco / Post Punk / etc.. comps were starting run out of tracks and that repetion was beginning to set in.

Also, does anyone know if the Mutant Disco comp has been re-released in the UK yet? The Ze records website sems to imply that its been released, but i haven't seen it in any UK shops or Amazon.co.uk

Ordered both the New York Noise and Rough Trade Shops post-punk comp. and can't wait to hear them. Both of them have plenty of obscure and OOP stuff (NY Noise has the Bloods' Button Up, yeah!) You can always count on both of these labels, Soul Jazz and Rough Trade to come up with great material as they have done so often on past compilations. I don't know whats up with the Ze re-issues.In addition to Mutant Disco they also have a punk comp due out too. Good luck trying to find both since nobody seems to have them.

the ze comps will be distributed in the uk by 3MV and should be available shortly.

'new york noise' is fab but as with 'in the beginning there was rhythm', i think they made a couple of odd choices of tracks to represent a particular artist. the theoretical girls is the obvious example.

the theoretical girls track is possibly my favourite! possibly because it and the other glenn branca track were furthest from what i was expecting. IIRC, the booklet says they picked this track as it was the only single released by the group while they were a going concern. is that wrong?

also, if someone cd answer Robin's question re UK release date for Mutant Disco (and by extension the other Ze comp that's supposed to be out) i'd appreciate it too

I love You got me also, it fits better than US Millie on this comp and the rest is boring music (the theoretical unreleased stuff)

Just picked this up today. Quite enjoying the Bush Tetras track, despite some naff lyrics ("Ya Can't Be Funky if You Haven't Gotta Soul!"). Good stuff otherwise.

rough trade have copies in stock of 'mutant disco' @ £14.99 and 'n.y. no wave' @ £12.99

The opening Liquid Liquid track is pretty damn great too, I have to say. Is there stuff ever going to be re-released again? The Grand Royal compilation is nigh on impossible to put my hand to.

The Cure's "Never Enough"/The Dance's "Do Dada" from New York Noise. A Connection?

Liquid Liquid are playing at Canvas, Kings X (London) on Tuesday 15th July, supported by Colder and w/ Trevor Jackson DJing.

so maybe some momentum is building for a reissue program?

The re-issued Downtown 81 soundtrack has a lot of amazing stuff too: some of it, like James White, may still be available elsewhere, but others, like the Gray tracks, are hard to find, and overall a great sequence, quite a movie even without the movie.

I saw DNA half-a-dozen times in 1981 and this clip captures the experience and then some. ROCK & ROLL!
