I Want To Go Back To Michigan (Down On The Farm)
Music and Lyrics by Irving Berlin

I was born in Michigan
And I wish and wish again
That I was back in the town where I was born

There's a farm in Michigan
And I'd like to fish again
in the river that flows beside the field of waving corn.

A lonesome soul am I...here's the reason why
I want to go back, I want to go back, I want to go back to the farm.
Far away from harm, with a milk pail on my arm.
I miss the rooster, the one that use to wake me up at 4 AM.

I think your great big cities very pretty...
Nevertheless I want to be there,
I want to see there a certain someone full of charm.
That's why I wish again that I was in Michigan, down on the farm.

I want to go back, I want to go back,
I want to go back to that old farm.
Far away from harm, with a milk pail on my arm.
I miss the rooster, the rooster that use to wake me up at 4 AM.
I think your great big cities very pretty...

Nevertheless I want to be there,
I want to see there a certain someone full of charm.
Thats why I wish again, that I was in Michigan, down on the farm!

Didn't John Linnel from TMBG do a CD with a song for each of the 50 states? Or was that just an acid dream?

"Didn't John Linnel from TMBG do a CD with a song for each of the 50 states? Or was that just an acid dream?"

I don't know about that, but I believe the Dambuilders' song referenced above was part of their never-finished 50 Songs for 50 States project. I think they got up to 14 or 15 before they called it quits.

there's actually an even older thread than the one stevem links to, started by anthony in order to win a bet, on this very subject.

but it's a fun game trying to get all 51, so i won't spoil things by linking to it (yet)

Well uh...John Denver's Country Roads doesn't have West Virginia in the title, but it should. If for no other reason, because the drunken rednecks down the street can only manage to incoherently "sing" that part of the chorus at all hours of the fookin' night.

...yay West Virginia.
