MU - Afro Finger and Gel

and yours is?

i just realized it's only august. oh well, the best thing about making comments like this is seeing if they still hold in the future.

it's like this thread in a new warped and wonderful way.

disco stu (disco stu), Thursday, 7 August 2003 00:24 (twenty-two years ago)

Outkast - Speakerboxx/The Love Below

and that ain't even out yet.

ben welsh (benwelsh), Thursday, 7 August 2003 00:33 (twenty-two years ago)

It's still the Yeah Yeah Yeahs for me.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Thursday, 7 August 2003 00:36 (twenty-two years ago)

As of last week, I wouldn't have known clearly... maybe Yeah Yeah Yeahs. Now, however, I've belatedly heard Dizzee Rascal, and he's blown everything else away.

The Lex (The Lex), Thursday, 7 August 2003 00:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Dizzee Rascal, still (xp xp xp!). Though if you back up the MU choice with a decent description of what it is and why it works for you I'll probably give it a listen.

Nate Patrin (Nate Patrin), Thursday, 7 August 2003 00:46 (twenty-two years ago)

(though I guess maybe clicking on that link helps)

Nate Patrin (Nate Patrin), Thursday, 7 August 2003 00:46 (twenty-two years ago)

nate, it's like basement jaxx on bad acid. i like it because it's sounds like nothing else i've heard so far this year.

disco stu (disco stu), Thursday, 7 August 2003 00:51 (twenty-two years ago)

I am there. (Then again, you could use that phrase to describe The Man Who Lived Underground, which I cannot feel supergeeked over no matter how much I try.)

Nate Patrin (Nate Patrin), Thursday, 7 August 2003 00:53 (twenty-two years ago)

the freaks album is too "deep", although, yeah, i think it's good.

top album is probably still the rapture, with dizzee, tobias thomas, luomo and freeway rounding out the top five.

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 7 August 2003 00:59 (twenty-two years ago)

(nice review, strongo :) i really like the remixes of where were you... by freaks, but i haven't heard the album yet. i think it's partly that same nostalgia that jess' review talks about that inspires the mu album. it stands in very stark contrast to the slickness of mainstream club culture while simultaneously trying to push it into new non-obvious directions.

disco stu (disco stu), Thursday, 7 August 2003 01:07 (twenty-two years ago)

Not sure what I'd put as album of the year just yet, but to all of the dizzeee fans, you really need to hear the Fallacy album, Blackmarket Boy. I LOVE the Dizzee album, but Fallacy is right up there as well.

Jonathan, Thursday, 7 August 2003 01:13 (twenty-two years ago)

in the good ol' washing machine

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Thursday, 7 August 2003 01:17 (twenty-two years ago)

>i have heard the album of the year and it is...

titled "Sacred Love"

bahtology, Thursday, 7 August 2003 01:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Kevin Drumm - Land of Lurches. But it was stolen, damn.

sundar subramanian (sundar), Thursday, 7 August 2003 01:19 (twenty-two years ago)

Every Dog Has It's Day Vol.4 by Jeff Mills is getting a lot of play these days.

The Joris Voorn records on Ground Zero are fucking brilliant.

The Third And Final Report 12" by Perspects (Ian R. Clarke, ex le-car) on Interdimensional Transmissions is great.

Pseudo Records from France is banging as well, they put out two records this year and they are both tip.

The new Rod Modell record that will be comming out on Echochord in the fall is probably the best thing I have heard this year. Abstract broken beat post-Basic Channel minimalism from the guy behind the DeepChord records. If you don't get this record when it hits the bins you will be fucking up.

I heard a lot of other great stuff this year, but as usual most of it is catch up from years past.

(what about the Junior Senior album?)

Mike Taylor (mjt), Thursday, 7 August 2003 01:21 (twenty-two years ago)

i just listened to jeff mills' lifelike last night and i realized that i need more jeff mills in my life.

what little echochord stuff i've heard i haven't liked. it was too much like basic channel for my liking.

perspects are great...

kevin drumm is an evil evil man.

disco stu (disco stu), Thursday, 7 August 2003 01:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Hmm. Most of the albums declared classic I would put on my bottom-of-the-year list, like Dizzee. I really want to hear the Outkast though.

David Allen, Thursday, 7 August 2003 01:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Weird Al - Poodle Hat

Bryan Moore (Bryan Moore), Thursday, 7 August 2003 02:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Leafcutter John : "The Housebound Spirit"

Jay Vee (Manon_70), Thursday, 7 August 2003 03:48 (twenty-two years ago)

tie right now between
SFA phantom power
(haterz: don't bother)

and the world-beating
el gran silencio disc
that you all ignore

both by five-man teams
both alive with fire and love
both know how to rock

Haikunym, Thursday, 7 August 2003 04:25 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm sticking with New Pornographers - Electric Version.

derrick (derrick), Thursday, 7 August 2003 06:27 (twenty-two years ago)

open hand - the dream - great stuff

leper, Thursday, 7 August 2003 07:19 (twenty-two years ago)

Luomo, New Pornographers, Electric Six for me so far, with the Rapture pending

M Matos (M Matos), Thursday, 7 August 2003 07:20 (twenty-two years ago)

gemma hayes - night on my side - also groovy

leper, Thursday, 7 August 2003 07:21 (twenty-two years ago)

PLAID "Spokes" on WARP!

Frank Booth (Frank Booth), Thursday, 7 August 2003 08:42 (twenty-two years ago)

still Dizzee with The Rapture close behind

Michael B, Thursday, 7 August 2003 08:57 (twenty-two years ago)

Dizzzzzzzzzee ... The Locust ... maybe Lightning Bolt bringing up the rear but they are equivalent to the "token classical entry" in the Mencap affections...

DJ Mencap (DJ Mencap), Thursday, 7 August 2003 08:59 (twenty-two years ago)

Ellen Allien "Berlinette" + The Rapture "Echoes"

Sami (Sami), Thursday, 7 August 2003 09:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Dizzee easily, only scraped the dough together for it last week and am totally blown away. Rapture there or thereabouts. Audio Bullys honorable mention.

The Freaks are terrified of making a hit record. I'd still like to hear the album though.

Mix album wise: DJ Hell's from earlier in the year is still very close to my heart, also quite shocked recently by FC Kahuna's Another Fine Mess, I don't rate them but it's screwed acid house all the way.

Ronan (Ronan), Thursday, 7 August 2003 09:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Tim Hecker - Radio Amor
Worlds End Girlfriend (Can't remember the title)

actionjackson, Thursday, 7 August 2003 09:58 (twenty-two years ago)

i now have FOUR copies of the new Broadcast (plus mp3s on HD), so i guess that wins

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 7 August 2003 10:00 (twenty-two years ago)

luomo and dizzee, both level-pegged for me
ward 21's u know how we roll bubbling under...

Dave Stelfox (Dave Stelfox), Thursday, 7 August 2003 10:04 (twenty-two years ago)

Kevin Blechdom, even tho' half of it is old stuff from '02

Jeff W (zebedee), Thursday, 7 August 2003 10:14 (twenty-two years ago)

I have only heard two really good new albums this year:

Run to Ruin by Nina Nastasia - utterly incredible!

and

The Present Lover by Luomo

jed-e-3, Thursday, 7 August 2003 10:23 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm listening to an advance of Elbow's 'Cast of Thousands' and I really dig it -- tempted to cite this as best so far, but it'll probably change.

person#0 (person#0), Thursday, 7 August 2003 10:25 (twenty-two years ago)

it's between four tet, dj muggs and yo la tengo for me. that medicine one keeps growing on me, too.

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Thursday, 7 August 2003 10:32 (twenty-two years ago)

Medicine - The Mechanical Forces of Luuuuurrrrrve.

I don't want to listen to any other music.

kate (kate), Thursday, 7 August 2003 10:42 (twenty-two years ago)

Most promising candidates so far:

Children of Bodom, Hatecrew Deathroll
Vital Remains, Dechristianize
Zyklon, Aeon

But I'm waiting on the new Dimmu Borgir before making up even a preliminary Top Ten.

Phil Freeman (Phil Freeman), Thursday, 7 August 2003 10:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Yes - why is there so little rock in this thread? It's been a long way from a classic year for rock albums, but there've been plenty of t'ings poking above the murk... oh, stick The Gossip on m'list as well while you're at it.

DJ Mencap (DJ Mencap), Thursday, 7 August 2003 11:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah Yeah Yeahs / Fever to Tell

Andrew Frye (paul cox), Thursday, 7 August 2003 11:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Have to go with the White Stripes. Sorry to be so mainstream.

Jazzbo (jmcgaw), Thursday, 7 August 2003 11:57 (twenty-two years ago)

I can’t really choose between King Geedorah’s Take Me To Your Leader, Grandaddy’s Sumday and the Lifesavas’ Spirit in Stone. But there’s still a whole lot coming out this year from MF Doom and Quannum, so my hopes are still high.

Orange, Thursday, 7 August 2003 12:09 (twenty-two years ago)

I second Sumday as a contender.

person#0 (person#0), Thursday, 7 August 2003 12:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Three-way tie between Radiohead, The Blood Brother and SFA.

Other than that: Stars, Elbow, My Morning Jacket, A Silver Mt. Zion, Killing Joke, Death Cab for Cutie, The Rapture, Pretty Girls Make Graves.

Simon H., Thursday, 7 August 2003 12:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Postal Service - Give Up with the Kanye West mixtape and the Mars Vota right behind it. I think this list is pretty weak, though, and I want it to change. Is there any way to get the Dizzee or Luomo albums in the US without downloading or paying ridiculous import prices?

Tom Breihan (Tom Breihan), Thursday, 7 August 2003 13:19 (twenty-two years ago)

no.

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 7 August 2003 13:26 (twenty-two years ago)

luomo's has been crippled by lack of efa distro, and dizzee's SHOULD get a stateside release, but who knows when.

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 7 August 2003 13:26 (twenty-two years ago)

My top three, in no order: Postal Service / Prefuse 73 / Radiohead

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 7 August 2003 13:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Broadcast, Patrick Wolf, Richard X, unsure of order at the moment.

Alex in Rotherham (Alex in Doncaster), Thursday, 7 August 2003 13:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Kraftwerk obv

Dr. C (Dr. C), Thursday, 7 August 2003 14:10 (twenty-two years ago)

'Sposedly some of the Cold songs were cowritten by Rivers Cuomo, and a couple of them do sound like it...

Ah, NOW I see why I wouldn't like it. ;-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 7 August 2003 14:39 (twenty-two years ago)

My votes....

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 7 August 2003 16:10 (twenty-two years ago)

i've been enjoying prefuse 73 / pedro / super furry animals quite a lot, too. i haven't got one particular fave.

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Thursday, 7 August 2003 18:36 (twenty-two years ago)

Un-Cut - The Uncalculated Some (12-track promo version). Soul music for the 21st century. And, of course, Ween Quebec, but that goes without saying.

SINGLE OF THE YEAR SO FAR: Jane's Addiction - "Just Because"

Who's with me???

Evan (Evan), Thursday, 7 August 2003 18:50 (twenty-two years ago)

hopefully no one

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 7 August 2003 19:05 (twenty-two years ago)

The guy by the dip who is bumming everyone out.

David. (Cozen), Thursday, 7 August 2003 19:08 (twenty-two years ago)

it's like the soundtrack every bad college roommates has brought along to the dorm room, ever.

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 7 August 2003 19:10 (twenty-two years ago)

(Did you live in a dorm, Jess?)

David. (Cozen), Thursday, 7 August 2003 19:13 (twenty-two years ago)

(god, only for one year. i got: a. the phish loving ex football player, b. the ponytailed jazz guitarist [who ran up $400 in probably still unpaid phone sex calls], and c. the Joisey skate punk with accent to match who only listened to one bad religion cd.)

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 7 August 2003 19:15 (twenty-two years ago)

(and this was art school! i was promised kindly queers and scary art school chicks who make their own clothes. [well, actually i got that, but that's a whole nother kettle.])

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 7 August 2003 19:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Wow, mine, sorry 'mine' since it was really actually Katy's was all Bob Dylan and Slint.

David. (Cozen), Thursday, 7 August 2003 19:18 (twenty-two years ago)

dizzee and the rapture are 1-2 some order, with the clientele, sfa, luomo, and junior senior behind them.

scott pl. (scott pl.), Thursday, 7 August 2003 19:18 (twenty-two years ago)

oops, I left out an entire word

scott pl. (scott pl.), Thursday, 7 August 2003 19:19 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't think I own an album from this year. Oh, the Colleen thing and the Alasdair Roberts one but they're not all that special.

David. (Cozen), Thursday, 7 August 2003 19:21 (twenty-two years ago)

"hierarchy of hoaxes" by the Motel Candlewasters

from out of nowhere

www.thestairs.com/motelcandlewasters

Billy, Thursday, 7 August 2003 20:59 (twenty-two years ago)

Luomo, followed by Dizzee, Coloma, Elephant Man if he counts (i'm pinning hopes on "Good 2 Go" though), Mis-Teeq, Sean Paul and The Rapture.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Thursday, 7 August 2003 23:17 (twenty-two years ago)

I gotta hear that luamo. What's the word on that? Know where I can find a good review?

ben welsh (benwelsh), Thursday, 7 August 2003 23:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Yancey, not Cold, noooooo.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Thursday, 7 August 2003 23:18 (twenty-two years ago)

that colleen album is quite good.
it reminds me of
gas. which is nice in my book.

</haikunym>

disco stu (disco stu), Thursday, 7 August 2003 23:28 (twenty-two years ago)

damn, that's not a proper haiku! (replace "album is" with album's)

disco stu (disco stu), Thursday, 7 August 2003 23:30 (twenty-two years ago)

*groans* i got the syllable counts inverted, too! haikunym, please do not be offended.

disco stu (disco stu), Thursday, 7 August 2003 23:33 (twenty-two years ago)

all is forgiven
because I am nice and 'cause
you are disco stu

Haikunym (Haikunym), Thursday, 7 August 2003 23:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Anthony you'd love the Cold album, for serious.

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Thursday, 7 August 2003 23:47 (twenty-two years ago)

I only heard a bit, and while I'll admit there is some Weezerian pomp, I thought the singer dude was a big bore. Plus "Stupid Girl" is a little too vague in its misogyny (where's the Durstian bon mots and anecdotal info?). But if I get a chance I may give it another listen. But chiggety check-yerself on that one.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Friday, 8 August 2003 00:12 (twenty-two years ago)

Has no one heard Karuki Zamen Kuri no Hana by Shiina Ringo? I'm going to put it in my slsk folder with the hope that someone will check it out. I can't figure out how to describe it, but I'm sure someone here will be able to do it justice. Listening to it on headphones makes me feel dizzy. By far my favorite of the year.

The A-frames album (the first one) comes in second. Probably not a release from this year technically, but I know the cd was released this year. Everything I wanted Interpol (as well as every other hyped next big thing) to be - anachronistic and brand new at the same time. Does anyone know if the second one is going to come out on cd? Should I just break down and buy the vinyl?

Lightning Bolt and Blood Brothers both still sound great as does Kevin Blechdom even though the best songs were previously released elsewhere.

fffv (fffv), Friday, 8 August 2003 00:25 (twenty-two years ago)

Also in love with the Radio Dept and both Animal Collective albums.

fffv (fffv), Friday, 8 August 2003 00:27 (twenty-two years ago)

(awww thanks man...)

in the future i
can only hope to put forth
the zen as you wrote

disco stu (disco stu), Friday, 8 August 2003 01:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Radio Dept rule! i vote for the Joy Zipper album too, which is v special

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Friday, 8 August 2003 03:16 (twenty-two years ago)

the mu album is still sending me into shivery fits. amazing on record and live. other than that, not much has changed... the rapture, the yyy's, dizzee rascal, juan maclean.

lauren (laurenp), Friday, 8 August 2003 05:43 (twenty-two years ago)

No love for Jan Jelinek - "La Nouvelle Pauvrete"? Or did was it released last year?
The new Kraftwerk could also be a contender

On a re-issues-related side-note, the new 'Introducing Capt. Beefheart' compilation is excellent

Fabrice (Fabfunk), Friday, 8 August 2003 06:40 (twenty-two years ago)

This thread makes me wish I had either money or a DSL connection.

oops (Oops), Friday, 8 August 2003 06:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Ween - Quebec

Chris V. (Chris V), Friday, 8 August 2003 10:41 (twenty-two years ago)

"Has no one heard Karuki Zamen Kuri no Hana by Shiina Ringo?"

I have and yes, it's very very good. Though I'm a bit disappointed she didn't include the lush single version of Stem. If you like that definately check Kahimie Karie's newie "Trapeziste" and Aco's "Irony".

My favourites this year: Lightning Bolt, Ween, OOIOO, Dizzee, Andrew Broder's "More Modern Hits", Kevin Drumm's "Land Of Lurches", Broadcast, Sole, Why? Minamo, abt two thirds of Girls Aloud and the Sean Paul album has really won me over.

I'm sure that the Buck 65 and Fennesz albums will be up there once they're released too.

Nathan W (Nathan Webb), Friday, 8 August 2003 11:15 (twenty-two years ago)

electric jim.

joy zipper aint available yet. b*stard. been awaiting this since reviews last year. (i dont d/l due to old school modem connection), i know its on its way soon due to deals being sorted out for 13 Amp .. but my patience wears thinner by the day. as i know i am gonna love it. (ps int with petra/Free Ass at certain lo-tech review website if you like the 13 amp stuff)

onwards, m.e

mark e (mark e), Friday, 8 August 2003 11:35 (twenty-two years ago)

ok. to answer the thread.
pedro. broadway project. matt harding. king of woolworths. are all close.
but so far its either kid acne 'council pop' or buck65 newbie.
gonna have to sit on them for a couple of months and see what else happens, as i am keen on unkle aswell (not heard new lp but have high hopes despite the bad vibes coming out of reviews), and of course joy zipper.

mark e (mark e), Friday, 8 August 2003 11:38 (twenty-two years ago)

You have the full Buck65 album? Tell me more?

Nathan W (Nathan Webb), Friday, 8 August 2003 11:41 (twenty-two years ago)

When is the Juan Maclean album out? By The Time I Get To Venus is so great and I liked You Can't Have It Both Ways

Ronan (Ronan), Friday, 8 August 2003 11:55 (twenty-two years ago)

i don't think i've heard any album from this year more than once, other than the dizzee rascal one, which would probably be up there anyway...

looking foreward to hearing the herbert big band album, tobias thomas' new mix,the new super furries album (hopefully i won't be disappointed,i heard it once though and it didn't make a huge impression on me)and the new jimmy cake mini album

probably loads of other stuff i can't remember off hand, and probably won't get to hear unless i get a proper job soon...

robin (robin), Friday, 8 August 2003 12:04 (twenty-two years ago)

also,i think i might have asked this before, but what's the story with hip hop mix tapes like the kayne west one mentioned upthread?
are they only available in america?

robin (robin), Friday, 8 August 2003 12:08 (twenty-two years ago)

http://image.allmusic.com/00/amg/cov200/drf900/f936/f93655eef61.jpg

dleone (dleone), Friday, 8 August 2003 12:26 (twenty-two years ago)

They aren't even technically available in America, although they're starting to be made available through legit channels. But you pretty much have to get them in mom and pop stores, online, or from vendors on the street. Try mixtapekings.com. And get the Kanye tape; it's great. I can't wait for his album, but I can't imagine it'll be much better.

Tom Breihan (Tom Breihan), Friday, 8 August 2003 12:32 (twenty-two years ago)

What album is that, dleone?

o. nate (onate), Friday, 8 August 2003 12:34 (twenty-two years ago)

cheers tom
anyone know of any british based websites or shops that might stock them?
(i'm in ireland)

also,no mention (i don't think) of the neptunes presents clones album so far,has anyone heard it?
i'm downloading the odb track now, haven't heard anything else other than frontin' which i really like
surprised no-ones mentioned the album on this thread so far though...

robin (robin), Friday, 8 August 2003 12:36 (twenty-two years ago)

o. nate, Animal Collective Here Comes the Indian. It's probably something you need to pick up.

dleone (dleone), Friday, 8 August 2003 12:38 (twenty-two years ago)

shit, forgot to mention Animal Collective.

Nathan W (Nathan Webb), Friday, 8 August 2003 12:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Got Sleep's Dopesmoker in the mail yesterday and it's definitely a contender. It's the long version of Jerusalem. A 63 (formerly 52) minute song about weed.

Phil Freeman (Phil Freeman), Friday, 8 August 2003 13:44 (twenty-two years ago)

other contenders:
over the rhine's ohio,
cibelle's debut;

rosco p. coldchain's
hazardous life: the mixtape
might be best of all

Haikunym (Haikunym), Friday, 8 August 2003 13:53 (twenty-two years ago)

Kinski-Airs Above Your Station
Contenders that I haven't heard yet:
Broadcast- Haha Sound
Animal Collective-Here Comes the Indian

fffv - talk to me about this radio dept.

T. Weiss (Timmy), Friday, 8 August 2003 22:33 (twenty-two years ago)

radio dept = fuzzy pop somewhere on the sweeter side on the jesus and mary chain. picked it up because they were compared to kg (the one from france), which is one of my favorite bands ever. not quite as noisy as the kg singles, but good nonetheless. i guess it sits somewhere between C86 and shoegazer, which to me is the perfect place to be. not the kind of album that will blow someone away on first listen - comfort music, really.
