so, i think i'm gonna have to keep these to 10 seconds or so, in order to keep them "moments." they can be sounds, riffs, melodies, lines, drum hits, whatever you like. i find i remember the moments more and more these days.

mine:

- the opening bagpipe drone in elephant man's "nah lick"
- the bassline in the wiley remix of "we're ready"
- "only love kills war, when will they learn?"
- the duet bit in "rock your body"
- "it was like, muder she wrote..."
- the piano in "clocks"
- how once "get busy" kicks in it sounds older - almost ancient - than just about anything else ever, and yet totally modern
- "and we don't give a fuck it's not your birthday"
- the way "here we go with revenge for WTC" line in "bombs over baghdad"
- the "guitar solo" in "the present lover" (still)
- "girl, i wanna take you to a gay bar" (surely the best opening line ever?)
- the horns in "crazy in love"
- the "my sharona" riff in "no good advice" and laughing out loud waiting for the bus when i first realized it getting stares from people around me
- how "belly dance, neptunes, come again!" drives the final chorus home in the kardi song
- the exhaustion of the final verse in the cash cover of "hurt"
- "hi, this is fannypack and this is our least favorite song on the album. sorry."
- the guitar opening "cadillac's on 22's"
- any time anyone says "just blaze!" at the beginning of a track
- the way the piano tilts forward at the chorus of andrew broder's bootleg version of mf doom's "ain't nothin" only to recede right back
- neko's voice on the chorus of "the laws have changed"
- "i love you like a fat kid love cake"
- "dizzee run tings like idi amin"
- "came out barefoot like fred flintstone"
- "i'm a/ninja turtle"
- "blah blah blah blah SHOWDEMDAFUKUSIGN!!!"
- the way bonecrusher says "cerebellum"

i'm sure i have more

- "i don't care what people say"
- "I looked like tom cruise on vanilla sky"
- "WOT THE FAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHH"
- the first 3 seconds of that song where richard x learns the fizzy lessons of shakedown's 'at night' ft kelis
- the sound of the all the weight being let go behind him in junior boy's "birthday"
- the opening electric piano microidyll of borneo & sporenburg's "boys in shorts"
-"and we're bringing back the twin towers"
- the last, ridiculously staccato verse on "jus a rascal", and the wooshing sound of release just after it finishes
-the cure riddim emo-dancehall of seeed's "oh god release/pressure and pain make me freeze"
-the muted string stabs (can stabs be muted?) on themroc's "gold is your metal"
-"wait! stop illin - told her to cop the baby fat leather, her response was 'she ain't got children'"
-that damn johnny cash "hurt" video that i only saw once
-"if you're legally blonde, i might respond/ticket to swan lake and we're gone"

"Uh-oh uh-oh uh-oh oh-no-no" - classic, nuff said
"He got hotted up." "Oh well." - Dizzee and friend practise not giving a shit
"I'm not that hot new chick!" - Chan Marshall strikes a pose
Two minutes into 'Date With The Night', when the guitar riff pummels its way back into the song

The squealing riffage in 'Seven Nation Army'
"Zees! Ees! Nat! En-AAA-AAAFFF!" - Russian schoolgirl faux-lesbian passion and drama
The surf guitar in 'No Good Advice'
The bit in 'Gossip Folks' where Missy sounds EXACTLY LIKE a car screeching to a halt on burnt tarmac
Sarah Nixey's impeccable received pronunciation on Black Box Recorder's 'When Britain Refused To Sing': "Shut your mouth, get out of my face, I'll blow you away if you invade my space".
The propulsive-compulsive bass on The Raveonettes' 'Do You Believe Her'
"Ha! You tiptoe! Just keep your zip closed!" - Alesha Mis-Teeq gets scary
About eight minutes into Nick Cave's 'Babe I'm On Fire' when you realise there's still another seven minutes to go
VV's sudden, unbidden exclamation of "Fuck!" on The Kills' 'Cat Claw'
"If you look back in history it's a common double standard of society" - ooh, Xtina, we know our feminist history now

- Alesha in Mis-Teeq's "Eye Candy": "I don't really care if you're a shy kinda guy" - mainly because it sounds like "I don't really care if we go shack in a gak", which is a pretty bizarre concept.

on the new Atmosphere album, Seven's Travels, two things: "She kisses like she already came/And that's a Lifter Puller line for those without any game," and the entire first verse of "Shoes," the best vocal he's ever done. similarly, El-P's entire verse on Aesop Rock's "We're Famous" (from the forthcoming Bazooka Tooth).

- Precisely 4:02 into "Blood On Your Hands" on the new Killing Joke where Geordie reverts back from the middle-eight's high-end, distorted wind up into the urgent, staccato riffage (which, as I described in another post, replicates the sound of a frantic, morse coded distress signal from within the jaws of an angry, radioactive shark). MAJESTY!

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 13 August 2003 23:04 (twenty-two years ago)

The only music which has really made me go 'ooh aah' this year has been by a local band called The Phoenix Foundation.

So: Just after the second chorus on Lambs

The first 10 seconds of Blue Summer

The bit in The Drinker where the lyrics go "And I say" and then a guitar solo takes over, and it distinctly feels like it's saying a sentence that evaporates when I try and look at it closely.

Also:

The bit on Visitor by Luomo where she sings "I doubt you wanna make me burn" for the first time and the bass bubbles away underneath, where you realize there's no kick drum and there ought to be but at the same time it is better that there isn't.

damian_nz (damian_nz), Wednesday, 13 August 2003 23:32 (twenty-two years ago)

Name-dropping variety: Interviewing dudes from the Libertines and the Hives backstage at Coachella

Corny variety: Seeing Fleetwood Mac perform "The Chain Live."

College throwback variety: Attending Phish's summer tour opener -- best show I've seen them play in 9 years.

Otherwise: Hearing David Banner's Mississippi for the first time (Eat a dick, bitch!!!!!).

E-mailing Howe Gelb back and forth.

And rushes via disc: DBT's Decoration Day -- "Rock n roll means well/But it can;t help telling youg boys lies"; Robert Lockwood Jr.'s '73 disc Contrasts (amazing!!), and putting Fog's "What a Day Day" on repeat and noticing it gets stronger after each listen.

anthony easton (anthony), Thursday, 14 August 2003 00:33 (twenty-two years ago)

"Introducing for the first time/Pharoah on the microphone!"

The key change in Luomo's "What Good," which sends a ripple down the spine of the track--the most purely ecstatic moment I can recall since pick-your-fave-from-Discovery. Also the moment when he starts cutting up "I-I-I ain't g-g-got an-an-anything else" in "So You"--rapture eruption in excelsis

M Matos (M Matos), Thursday, 14 August 2003 01:36 (twenty-two years ago)

"yeah I need a hug but y'all need a hug too/'cause God gon' judge me the same day he judge you"

from the same song, Ja Rule ad-lib/shadowing "some may hate" by saying "hate on me"

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Thursday, 14 August 2003 02:04 (twenty-two years ago)

There's this keyboard part in the New Pornographer's Miss Teen Wordpower that kinda forms the bridge that just slays me. Then they use the same few measures later in the song as kind of an ancillary melody. I really dug that.
The third song on the new Pernice Brothers album has this bit where Joe Pernice sings "Love songs in monotone to a tick, tick,tick,tick,ticking" and then, at the start of the second verse, "So long Marianne, an intense night of fake sleeping. Never stirring, never found."
Those are real good song bits. I end up replaying the start of this song over and over again.

Bruce Urquhart (Bruce Urquhart), Thursday, 14 August 2003 02:07 (twenty-two years ago)

The leg-lifting dance from the Sean Paul video.
Kogan on the Contortions
The "screech" sound in ridin' spinners
The intro to the missisipi album, last ten seconds.
dizzee's "dot you kay dot rascala" riff from a live session with wiley
"ring the alarm" dropped in the "snake" remix
"as soon as the beat drops we got the streets locked"
"public industry number one"

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Thursday, 14 August 2003 02:35 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh, two other great moments: "Tick tick tick tick tick tick tock!!!" and "Kil, kill kill, kill kill!!!!" from St. Anger. The most breathtaking moments on a frustraingly uneven record.

oh and: "alright alright alright alright"

nnnh oh oh nnnh nnnh oh (James Blount), Thursday, 14 August 2003 03:51 (twenty-two years ago)

"gentlemen... good night, ladies... good morning"

nnnh oh oh nnnh nnnh oh (James Blount), Thursday, 14 August 2003 03:59 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh there's too many to mention on the Luomo album - any moment when the beat comes on inexpectedly during an otherwise slow build-up, particularly in "Could Be Like This" when it arrives in conjunction with a new bassline to change from desperate yearning into up-up-up ecstasy. Or how in "What Good" when the singer says "What's good? *I* ought to know!" he sounds like he's about to burst into tears.

In Girls Aloud's "Girls Allowed": the bit at the end where it momentarily becomes a minimalist, bassy club track, then switches back to high-octane disco. Also in "Some Kind of Miracle" the line "I kinda smile as if the whole thing's so passe", replaced with "I roll my eyes as if I don't care anyway" in the subsequent verse.

In Sean Paul's "Samfy I": "Well I've been a lot of places and I've seen a lot of faces and I've had a lot of ladies on a REGULAR REGULAR basis!"

Definitely second the duet in "Rock Your Body".

Oh and R. Kelly: "LIKE TWO GORILLAS IN THE JUNGUUUUULLLL, MAKING LOOOOOOOVE!" and then the hypnotic beat comes back all by itself without the attendent flute riffs.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Thursday, 14 August 2003 06:28 (twenty-two years ago)

But surely most of all, the guitar in the second and third choruses in Black Eyed Peas' "Where Is The Love?"

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Thursday, 14 August 2003 06:29 (twenty-two years ago)

i love this question!

"Ladies and Gentlemen - Miss Grace Jones" Being two feet away from Grace Live in Glasgow when she came down to the audience.

Gossip Folks - "why dont you buff these pumas' for 20 cents so your lights don't get cut off/ ya saggy assed cow stomachs"

Seeing the James Orr Complex @ Stereo

Michael Dracula - "Just walk right up to him, and tell him you HATE HIM... Tell him you HATE HIS GUTS"

Nina Nastasia asking for an audience member to get her a whisky to calm her down one song in at King Tuts.

"it feels like somethin's heatin up, can i leave wit' you" / "I don't know but i'm thinking bout really leavin' wit' you"

"Love is an object kept in an empty box"/ " how can something be in an empty box?" from (smog)'s Truth Serum

"you know i gave that horse a carrot so he'd break your foot" it's true that we love one another

"its a motherfucker, dont you know?" yo la tengo's cover of nuclear war

"Solid on the surface as I crumble within / But legends are made by vulnerable men" - sent an incredible shiver down my spine the first time I caught it, unfortunately I was in the newsagents but it hardly spoiled the moment.

"don't own a lot so i don't owe much/don't receive a lot of love so i don't show much"
"i'm problem for anthony blair"
"big up the hackney massive"
dizzee is my hero!

the whole of the present lover

the way that jay-z being so bad makes beyonce sound so, so good

seeing people dancing to fuck u sign at a dancehall night, flipping the bird rhythmically to the line "show them the fuck u sign"

jumping out of my seat upon hearing bagpipes in ward 21's "badda than dat"

the weird hollow bass noise, like blowing into the top of a beer bottle, in ward 21's petrol being exactly the same sound that drives a huge amount of grime garage...

luomo's remix of dub talor and vital...

the litle baby gurgle before the bassline kicks in on luciano's "amelie on ice"

reviving getting away with it by electronic as my favourite all-time end-of-the-night djing track

Dave Stelfox (Dave Stelfox), Thursday, 14 August 2003 09:59 (twenty-two years ago)

It?s probably a testament to how far my patience and attention span has slipped into ruin but this is the thread I think I?ve been waiting for. God bless (/ damn) the iPod.

- Noriko Tujiko?s voice eking out from behind the wash of bubbles in ?White Film?: ?you?re so beautiful?;
- 2:32 into ?Losing Grip? and the guitars drop and her voice is just the prettiest thing and (?why should I care??) then it all collapses again (chk-chk);
- ?I?m standing on the bridge, I?m waiting in the dark... there?s nothing but the rain, no footsteps on the ground...?;
- ?Don?t hold your self like that, cos you?ll hurt your knees. I kissed your mouth and back...?;
- The real tentative (scared reticent child-like scared) xylophone intro to Closer Musik?s ?Departures?;
- ?Twist an MC like David Platt?
- ?We be hollerin? YOO-HOO, we be hollerin?...?;
- Then they completely dropped the serenity in favour of rhythm but not just silly drum-led rhythm but big stabby synthquake rhythm, bishy-bashy riffs and sexy hypnotic vocals: ?Strict Machine?;
- ?I?m in love, I?m in love, I?m. in. love. with your Strict Machiii-iiine?;
- That moment when I was walking up the grassy knoll that leads to my house (it always sends me into needing the toilet this walk) and I started thinking that Jaylib?s ?The Red? was about boys being alright with having sex with menstruating girls (wtf?) (?y?all niggers ain?t up to the red?);
- The first perfect harpsichord (geddit?) of Koji Kondo?s ?The Legend of the Hero? unfolding out into the point (previously an asymptote) (now a standard) where the medieval meets the Neptunes in Japan at a conference on Gamelan;
- ?uh-ohhhhhhh, uh-ohhhhhhhhhhhh, uh-ohhhhhhhh?;
- ?If you don?t have credit on yr cellular, you are WRONG!?;
- ?This is Hotness, making you drop this, making you rock this, living la vidaaaaaaaa?;
- ?So take a look at me now, there?s just an empty space?;
- John?s ?Ignition (Remix)? thread;
- and ?Ignition (Remix)?;
- every last second of it;
- and all the first seconds of it;
- Roll Deep?s mystery elegy (?I luv girls, I luv sex... I wish I didn?t think so much...?) being the most beautiful thing;
- ?Get Busy? never really starts and never really stops;
- ?This ain?t a game, it?s too good to be a game? becoming my argument tactic of the year, perfect way to salve a hot air or an uncomfortable silence by reminding both of us (arguing) that this is all too good to be game, really;
- &c. &c. &c.

David. (Cozen), Thursday, 14 August 2003 10:14 (twenty-two years ago)

(Ah fuck fuck buggery fuck, I hate AppleWorks it always translates inverted commas into question marks! Could a moderator maybe sort that out? Or someone tell me how to avoid it in future?)

David. (Cozen), Thursday, 14 August 2003 10:15 (twenty-two years ago)

- "Bigger lips on a pussy, let me see it blow a kiiiss
In the back with the yac now they blowin' on Ludacriiis" - slowly drawled in the middle of "Dis bitch, dat hoe"

- The pistol-cocking sound in the "Pulp fiction" remix

- The xylophone kind of thing in Roscoe's "Smooth sailin'"

- The road-drill bit in the "Satisfaction" video

- When the verse segues straight into the chorus on Get Busy so's you don't notice at first

- "You think I'm a puuuuuuuunk"

Jacob (Jacob), Thursday, 14 August 2003 10:30 (twenty-two years ago)

- "My texture is cut from a different cloth"
- The chorus to Fat Joe and Thalia.

R. Kelly: "LIKE TWO GORILLAS IN THE JUNGUUUUULLLL, MAKING LOOOOOOOVE!" and then the hypnotic beat comes back all by itself without the attendent flute riffs.

--The chorus to Fat Joe and Thalia.
oh yeah: hearing my daughter sing this yesterday was cracking me up, esp. as she had it "you make the dawg say"
--allison moorer's sexy wicked sly voice introducing a song on show: "this one's called...'i'm going DOWN'"
--the first line of 'don't wanna try': "ican'tbelieve, youhadthenerve, tosaythethingsyousaid"
--seeing el gran silencio's video for 'super riddim internacional' where they're all wearing matching sweatsuits with 'COMANDO RUFFMIX' stenciled on 'em and realizing 'holy shit they're the mexican clash!'

Jeanne Fury (Jeanne Fury), Thursday, 14 August 2003 14:19 (twenty-two years ago)

the second time I heard "The Taste Of Ink" by The Used

Senior saying "and all your troubles will be dead and gone!"

the whistling at the end of Electric Six's "Synthesizer." This is as good a place as any to note I'd like this song to be played during my funeral procession.

realizing Mick Jagger rhymes "messianic" with "satanic" on "Monkey Man" also when he states he's glad your his "monkey girl" (what didn't you people hear music this year that wasn't from this year?)

when those ladies rushed the stage like screaming Usher fans while I sang "Opposites Attract" at Karoake. Niiiiiiice.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Thursday, 14 August 2003 14:31 (twenty-two years ago)

The bit in "I Luv U" where Dizzee comes in from a chorus or something with "Yyyyyeaah, she's a fat girl". Don't know what he syas after that though so I might be misquoting.

Ludacris warming up to do his verse in "Gossip Folks", saying "Uh-huh, OK? Yeah" or something.

Pirate radio and garridge has offered a few joyous moments- the chorus to Davinche's 'Doing It Now' starting 'New Cross Gate!', heard while I was in said London district- some show where someone followed the line 'I swipe MCs like Lee Wong Bi' with 'and if you don't know who Lee Wong Bi is he's that bredda from Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon, and he smash up everyone with the SWORD cos he's ROUGH!', the incredible campness of the chorus to 'birds in da sky', oh and the line 'I'm raw raw like Zsa Zsa Gabor' on one of the tracks on that deuce N.A.S.T.Y CD....

Myron Kosloff, Thursday, 14 August 2003 21:13 (twenty-two years ago)

hah yeah "why? cuz i'm an evil guy" should def be on there.

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 14 August 2003 21:20 (twenty-two years ago)

Kano in "Boys Luv Girls": "But if SOUR's what you like I could give ya a taste o' my all-night uh-uh!" (I'm paraphrasing slightly I think)

Elephant Man: "Take to da dancefloor like ya step on crime!" in "On Line", and the first time you realise that the chorus for "Making Money" stills the na-na-na tune from "Without Me". Also, "Elephant Man pudding & pie, kiss the girls and make dem cry, when da girls came out to play, Elephant Man.... GIVE HER IT GOOD!" And also his pseudo-falsetto backing vocals in the operatic bits in "Tall Up Tall Up".

Alex, the R Kelly tune is "Snake".

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Thursday, 14 August 2003 23:41 (twenty-two years ago)

The short acapella part of "The End of Medicine" before the music comes in in the 3rd(2nd?) verse.

The White Stripes live. Esp. "Hotel Yorba".

MrSrLoveDaddy, Friday, 15 August 2003 03:34 (twenty-two years ago)

on the kraut-rock extravaganza of toolshed when they go into the chant of nananananannannanannanannanaanannanannananan ... and i find myself and others singing along to this creepy cult-like sing song.

kelis sassy 'my milkshake is better than yours'

st cool kid of death, Friday, 15 August 2003 03:50 (twenty-two years ago)

okay, probably on the colette No5 DFA mix... when the midnight mike track segues into that pixelated pling plong interlude out of which arrives a very slow fade in of casiotone for the painfully alone's "baby it's you"... absolutely stunning.

The Pseudo Echo thread.

colin s barrow (colin s barrow), Friday, 15 August 2003 05:15 (twenty-two years ago)

The Lex's list is pretty hard to fuck with.

- "I'm the lady sippin' Baileys while I strut like a model / If the ladies wanna hate me I just send 'em a bottle", and every other moment on Beyonce's 'In Da Club' where she effortlessly surpasses 50's version.

- the moment on the Rapture album when you first recognise the 'House Of Jealous Lovers' bassline coming in under the crowd noise and feedback that ends the previous track.

- "We got food everywhere, as if the party was catered."

- Neko Case & co gearing up for the chorus of The New Pornographers' 'Miss Teen Wordpower' - "Nobody knows the record or song..." (I may have the lyrics slightly wrong) - you can feel the euphoria building until explodes with that "THE WAY YOU DO!"

- the moment where 'Electrobix' by Scissor Sisters suddenly becomes poignant as well as superbly bitchy - "I've never felt so alone!"

Flyboy (Flyboy), Friday, 15 August 2003 10:49 (twenty-two years ago)

Deadpan Manc girl, chants and star trek fx opening Dizzee’s “Seems To Be”
The piano pedals sounding like a respirator on Cat Power’s “Maybe Not”
The pneumatic drill-girls heralding Black Dice’s “The Dream Is Going Down”
Scratching as beats on Fog’s hectic “What A Day Day” opening
The way Bill Callaghan phrases “clipping the wings of your morning flight” on Smog’s “Our Anniversary”
The bassline on Luomo’s “Cold Lately”
Phased bagpipes on Ward 21’s “Badder Than Dat”
Every arpeggio on “Wonderful Rainbow”
Everything uttered by Neko Case
The rippling nord lead on Broadcast’s “Colour Me In” carousel
Ludacris gatecrashing “Gossip Folks”
The reverse loops stretched across Kopernik’s gorgeous “Theme For Grace”
Every moment, nearly, on Matmos’ “The Civil War”
Pitman’s Trevor Nelson putdown on “It Takes Tea”
MF Dooms’ beats, all of them
Itchy synths on “Like Glue”

Nathan W (Nathan Webb), Friday, 15 August 2003 11:27 (twenty-two years ago)

*pneumatic drill-girls* ??? Obv. I mean guitars.

Nathan W (Nathan Webb), Friday, 15 August 2003 12:45 (twenty-two years ago)

On the first track on the free CD on the front of Hip Hop Connection this month, they're playing some shout outs to Skitz and Rodney P. Nas delivers his all cool like, like he's half asleep. Then Pitman crashes in and starts going on about how "Rodders and Skitzo" are mental. "Play us a banger and I don't mean a sausage, you get me?"

(The CD has several triffic moments btw, incl a very fine Elephant Man guest slot.)

Tim (Tim), Friday, 15 August 2003 14:03 (twenty-two years ago)

>>>MF Dooms’ beats, all of them

I have to agree, but also add all of his verses.

MrSrLoveDaddy, Friday, 15 August 2003 15:32 (twenty-two years ago)

yr right of course, but I've been listening to the Nas bootleg and the Special Herbs CDs a lot lately, so that thought was resonating. People should talk up Doom's beats more.

Anyone know if that Hip Hop Connection freebie is on slsk?

Nathan W (Nathan Webb), Friday, 15 August 2003 16:48 (twenty-two years ago)

plus:

Lyndsey Buckingham's production on "Red Rover"
The skree solo on Ween's affecting "I Don't Want it"
The anchorless drift of Animal Collective's "Two Sails On A Sound"
Fannypack for confounding my expectations
The swirling snyths that step Sole's "Shoot The Messenger" up a gear
The way Girls Aloud's "All I Need All I Don't" sweeps in after it it's muted radio intro
Second dibbs on Borneo & Sporenburg's "Boys In Shorts", but for reanimating the Steve Reich sample The Orb used on "Little Fluffy Clouds" in a way that didn't make you think of The Orb

-seeing the 7 year rabbit cycle drummer play with 3 sticks in each hand.
-sun city girl's as carnival folklore resurrection drummer crazy talk.
-wolf eyes melting gadgetry and breaking strings with microphones dripping out their mouths
-hans grusels saw the head off a stuffed deer while caroliner people danced around with acid fey musics bleeping at us...
-playing with the dolphins of the forest in front of a very kind extreme elvis and two other nearly sleeping people while people in the old folks home across the street complained about the noise.
-gygax! dropping casio magically into a moog and playing excerpts from a stereolab and wolf eyes collaboration.
-seeing my son attempt to use the potty for the first time. how did we all figure that out again?
-"i am a nobot!" sung by the a-frames.
-"everyday i fall in love with someone new, sometimes it seems like you, that i'm holding in my dreams, of invisibility" sung by outrageous cherry... a b-side on one of their new singles... the whole song is amazing.
-"holland" by sufjan stevens. very immediate.
-carpet jim's angels.

so much more. i have favorite moments every or every other day.

hearing the classic 'blablablablabla' laser sound come in for the first time on Mike Paradinas' 'Johnny Maastricht' followed by the muffled 'rudebwoy' vocal and warped bassline and being instantly transported back in time ten years to a derelict warehouse - somewhere i'd never even to but felt like i had

stevem (blueski), Friday, 15 August 2003 17:56 (twenty-two years ago)

discovering "by your side" by sade which really, really knocked me out and was really depressed to find out that an indie band (that I kinda know) had already covered it.

I mean, this is the first time I've ever sung along to a non-vocal techno track before. Turning point.

flightsatdusk (flightsatdusk), Saturday, 16 August 2003 05:39 (twenty-two years ago)

three months pass...

- "i can't feel myself! i wanna feel myself like tweet!"
- the weird-ass "there's spiders in here!" outro in "hotness"

- timbaland beat boxing "she'll be comin round the mountain"
- the extended looped-chaka outro of the single version of "thru the wire" (the dj: "what the hell was that?")

- the monk-in-the-echo-chamber piano at the beginning of umod's "tromboline"
- "i don't like chains, i don't like whips, i don't like pain, that's not my shit (it hurts!)"
- the splash-mercury-in-yr-eyelids snare hits on "plug it in"
- the "ooh i like it" outro beeps on "plug it in"
- "i would just like to say i feel great"
- the guitar in "my first song" (it will be looped forever when i die)
- "hi ladies." "hi elephant man!" "where you from ladies?" "we from tokyo, jap-an."

more to come today.

fiddo centington (dubplatestyle), Monday, 8 December 2003 16:07 (twenty-two years ago)

If I must pick one, it'll be the introduction of the guitar solo on "Snooks" by Elbow, this huge distorted wail of a noise that sneaks in from nowhere during an otherwise quiet little song. It surprised the crap out of me the first time I heard it, and still does.

If I'm allowed a second moment, it would be the moment a few seconds into "Chrono" by Kraftwerk where they decide to use their snare drum for the first time after 15 minutes of pure hi-hat and bass drum, a classic Kraftwerk moment.

Frankly I get the feeling I've not heard enough new music this year. I think I'm getting old.

Rob M (Rob M), Monday, 8 December 2003 16:16 (twenty-two years ago)

when lcd soundystem's "yeah" drops out to the sub-bass and echoing boing-claps...it sounds like new horizon's "slamdown"

fiddo centington (dubplatestyle), Monday, 8 December 2003 16:23 (twenty-two years ago)

This thread makes me want to listen to everything on it RIGHT NOW... too many things to second.

-"Damn right, it's better than yours"
-"He'll get a rise, you'll get a raise!" from Lene Nystrom's It's Your Duty
-"No! MORE! LIES!" - Lisa Kekaula rides the Jaxx beat like a surfer on a tidal wave
-The bit in Rufus Wainwright's Oh What A World where it segues into Ravel's Bolero - so audacious, so flamboyant, such FLOUNCE
-Carina Round, live, switching from one of her songs with no warning into a bug-eyed, hair-flailing interpolation of "I Wanna Be Your Dog"
-The way the beat and background sounds get really frenetic on the "pop that, pop that, jiggle that fat" line in Pass That Dutch
-on my mp3 of Tori Amos covering Purple Rain live for the first time ever, the moment where everyone realises what song it is and goes mental - trumped only by the way she tackles the high notes at the end
-"In a minute I'm-a take-a you oooonnnn"
-that freaky whispered "don't look at me" at the start of Xtina's Beautiful
-"You spent ten grand!" "Oh, damn!" on MC Shystie's reworking of I Luv U
-"Shake it like a Polaroid picture!"
-Lisa Maffia slipping into patois on All Over

The Lex (The Lex), Monday, 8 December 2003 16:23 (twenty-two years ago)

--"This'll be the last time I ever cut your hair" and the flying trapeze organ Scissor Sisters-"Laura"
--"So what, Spaz! Spaz out!" ARE Weapons, "Don't Be Scared"
--"Mr. Manatee--c'est magnifique!" Alizee-"Au Contre Courant" (probably not the actual lyric)
--the Burundi drums and the cheap punk sounding Chuck Berry guitar on Relaxed Muscle's "Muscle Music".
--"last night I saw Darrin/he didn't recognize me/he offered me out/didn't recognize his own father/tell me Mary, what's that all about?" Relaxed Muscle, "Mary"

Arthur (Arthur), Monday, 8 December 2003 21:08 (twenty-two years ago)

- "WATCH OUT WE ARE RHYTHM BANDITS!!!"
- the moment in either of the two Nasty Crew mixes where "Weed Man" morphs into "Pick'n'Mix"
- the shrill "just! just! just!" interludes in that as of yet unknown half-speed Skepta track

DJing at a bar for the first time ever is way up there.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 03:08 (twenty-two years ago)

My first song ever was "Electric Demons In Love" by the Electric Six. So I guess hearing the opening guitar chords rise up and fade into a disco pulse there qualifies as the giggleriffic moment.

Hearing my one year old daughter sing along with the Uh Oh's in "Crazy in Love"

White Stripes chanelling Queen all of the sudden - "Ahhhhhhhh there's no home for you here girl go away, there's no home for you here."

The Shins pre-echo chorus to close out "Turn A Square" - "I can't just, I can't just, I can't just stay the course"

BrianB (BrianB), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 04:55 (twenty-two years ago)

Fannypack: "The home of Biggie/And P Diddy!" and later, putting their thang down, flipping it and reversing it on 'Theme From Fannypack'.

The Noonday Underground vs Cut Copy: The part where 'The Light Brigade' invents filter 80s rock.

Simon Amstell vs The Fast Food Rockers/Simon Amstell meets Clea - "I was thinking bush."

"So chill out-whoooooaaa" (semi-serious silly moment).

Getting some great props off bar bosses for pre-graduation DJ sets.

The chorus to Blazin' Squad's 'Flip/Reverse' dumbed down for mums by a Popjustice parent: "Girl/I really fancy you rotten/And if you let me/I'm gonna shag your bottom."

Dizee: "OOIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII!"

Kish Kash:
The outro to the Jaxx's 'Plug It In', beginning with JC going "Just plug it in".

Every "Round, round, round we go!" bit in 'Lucky Star', plus "Lucky Star!/Right here!"

JC's intro scream/Dizzee's screams/"Yo-yo-yo-yooo" on 'Cish Cash'

X-Factor:
'Being Nobody': "Hello, my name is Michelle...hellooo (ladies), my name is Tony...and my name is Jessica *giggle*"

'You Used To': choruses: "Yoooouuuu used to (USED TA!)/Used to hold (USED TA!)/Used to hold me (USED TA!)/Used to hold me so/Tiiiii-iiigghht (You used to hold me so ti-iiight!)"
Wordy bits during long bridge: "Baby, I remember/When you used to hold me so tight (You used to hold me so ti-ight)"

'Lemon/Lime': "Right/Wrong/Elton/*BEEEP*/Ad/Vance/No/Chance/Arma/geddon/David/Sne*BEEEP*/White/Line/Good/Time"

'You Better Let Me Love You': "Sister!/I'm your Daddy!" plus "I'm you Daddy"'s liberal cut-up in the final refrain.

Bubba Sparxxx: the part in 'Nowhere' where Kiley Dean leads into 'Cry Me A River'. See also: "The damage is done so I guess I be leaving."
