Heard a few people mention this stuff and it sounds intriguing. But this http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&uid=CASS70308161230&sql=A3e67mpn39f8o Really interests me.

"James Plotkin, the Frank Zappa of metal, was in the process of turning his joke grindcore project Old Lady Drivers into a psychedelic guitar experience when this album came out in 1992. It was sadly lost in the shuffle while labelmates Carcass and Entombed got most of the mainstream media's attention that year, but the noise being made here is much more original and crazy than anything the two other bands were making at the time. Taking a cue from industrial music, Plotkin (here credited as Jimmy Old) loads the music with precise drum beats and the occasional electronic noises. His guitar work is truly stunning, slashing around the tracks like Dave Mustaine one minute and Kevin Shields the next. Former Nirvana guitarist Jason Everman contributes detuned bass, and even jazz madman John Zorn makes an appearance for a noisy saxophone solo."

The Atomsmasher disc (on Hydra Head) is great. A blinding mix of gabba, death metal and fuck knows what else featuring Plotkin, Dave Witte on drums and some electronic guy named Speedranch. The follow-up disc, on Ipecac, with the same band but credited to Phantomsmasher, is shit, so stay away. Most of his other stuff is shit, too, but Atomsmasher is a motherfucker.

for a guy who spent most of the 90s boring the shit out of me, he's doing some pretty interesting stuff nowadays. "frank zappa of metal," though, what did he do to deserve that kind of abuse?

the phantomsmasher cd on ipecac isn't "shit" - it's just not as good as the one on hydra head. also worth checking is Khanate his sludge metal project sounds like brian johnson singing for early swans. or the lotus eaters he shares w/ stephen o'malley and aaron turner it is ambient guitar creakings kinda like if rafael toral wasn't so perfumed candle
