Horror Stories: Taking someone to a show who doesn't care about the band.

Spun from Going to shows alone . . . classic or dud?

I took someone to the Fleshtones. She had never been to a rock show before (She's from India...) She sat against the wall, half asleep & said everything sounded the same. The Fleshtones were insane as usual - I had to sit by the wall and babysit.

Clueless music dweeb that I am, I once took my very recent and very blond (some stereotypes are occasionally true, alas) girlfriend to hear the abstract improv of the Maarten Altena Octet in a club which didn't even serve booze. Live and learn.

Nom De Plume (Nom De Plume), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 18:09 (twenty-two years ago)

a friend of mine brought her boyf to rock shows and he hated rock. liking glenn gould over guided by voices is wise enough, but he would demonstrate his misery for all of us, sighing, draping himself gothically over the pinball machine, sitting in the corner with a scotch and reading the news on his cellphone. actually as I write this all out it doesn't sound too bad.

g--ff c-nn-n (gcannon), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 18:15 (twenty-two years ago)

really drunk before going to Spoon -- my girl and I drank some more and then ended up neckin' throughout the show. i don't really remember anything. and she wasnt interested in the band...

deathnight, Tuesday, 19 August 2003 18:17 (twenty-two years ago)

my girl and I drank some more and then ended up neckin' throughout the show.

oh, that's just a HORRID way to spend a show.

brought my then-gfriend with me to see the Old 97's, which she loved, and Wilco, which she wasn't too particularly a fan of.

since this was a school night and she'd apparently never heard of naps or caffiene, she ended up starting to fall asleep during wilco's set, sitting on the tables on the side of the hall. Had to watch her, of course, and she wanted to leave JUST as they busted out the Mermaid Avenue songs.

"...but i've gotta go to WOORRRRRRRK tomorrow!"

bleah.

Kingfish (Kingfish), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 18:37 (twenty-two years ago)

I own this thread.

I missed Autechre on the Tri Repetae tour in 1996 by 15 minutes because the girl I took with me was tired and was whining to go home.

In hindsight I should have told her to sit in the car and wait for me. To this day I still give her the cold shoulder when ever I see her.

Mike Taylor (mjt), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 18:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Reading this thread, you'd think that this problem is solely with chixors.

dave225 (Dave225), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 18:41 (twenty-two years ago)

I took my girlfriend to see Television...she hated it. I could see it in her eyes...which in turn reduced my enjoyment of the show. Im taking her to see SFA/Grandaddy, and im afraid that it might be a bad idea.

I took someone to see the Mekons, they hated it. I loved it. Once again another show i would have had more fun if i'd gone solo.

Spinktor the Unmerciful (mawill5), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 18:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Dave, i think you hit the nail on the head.

Spinktor the Unmerciful (mawill5), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 18:45 (twenty-two years ago)

uh... "a friend of mine brought her boyf to rock shows and he hated rock"

g--ff c-nn-n (gcannon), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 19:05 (twenty-two years ago)

I brought my wife to the lifter puller show and she made us leave halfway through. She wanted to leave before they even started! I'm glad I was stubborn enough to stick it out as long as I did. I should have fed her more drinks.

Dan I., Tuesday, 19 August 2003 19:20 (twenty-two years ago)

I took a (male) friend to see Ted Nugent at Irving Plaza back in 2001 or so (off-night from the KISS tour) and about halfway through the show he looked over, observed me rockin' out, and said, "You're not appreciating this even a little bit ironically, are you?"

Phil Freeman (Phil Freeman), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 19:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Took a gf to Eric's Trip reunion show in Halifax. What was going as a great concert was absolutely ruined by her. She was clinging to me for dear life, having not been in a bar that size before. Then she had an hour long hissy fit about a friend who kissed me on the cheek. Then started pulling the tired line just as Eric's Trip start up. If I hadn't caught Eric's Trip earlier that tour I would have told her to go home and I'd go sleep in the physics building.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 19:29 (twenty-two years ago)

I've seen this at plenty of metal concerts, but the one that sticks out the most in my mind is about a year ago I went to see Ac-Dc with a male friend(Im a female). There was a couple in front of us and the guy was a big Ac-Dc fan, totally psyched for the show to start. she was a straight type yuppy and you could tell she was just there for his sake. well, the band went on...and they were wailin'....my friend went on a beer run and picked up a chick,so I was sittin alone. with every song they did the guy in front of me got more and more stoked and his girlfriend just about YAWNED in his face so by the end of the night he was actually talking to ME about "aw man, this is great!Isnt this great?????" right over her head. He shoulda just left her at home. If your girlfriend/boyfriend is not a fan of the music why plop down $50 for thier ticket? He woulda been better off takin his best friend.

mamamiasweetpeaches, Tuesday, 19 August 2003 20:22 (twenty-two years ago)

>He woulda been better off takin his best friend.

I do this all the time. I always ask my wife first if she wants to come to a given show with me, but if she says no, I go anyway, with my best friend from high school.

Phil Freeman (Phil Freeman), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 20:28 (twenty-two years ago)

I think the lesson here is, obviously, girls are lame. Bring your girlfriends to Great Adventure, not gigs or record stores.

Just kidding.

I remember one show in particular, about six or seven years ago, a bunch of us went to see Thurston solo, traveled about an hour. Most of us were way into it, but one girl stayed in the adjacent bar complaining that she didn't really like "noise' and why didn't he "play songs." She was recently profiled in The Wire.

OK, but, sub-thread - honestly - hasn't anyone here ever BEEN that person?

I recall groaning and sighing my way thru Bouncing Souls, The Promise Ring, and many, many, many others. I'm sure I was just as much a pain in the ass to those poor folks as any of the above offenders.

roger adultery, Tuesday, 19 August 2003 23:32 (twenty-two years ago)

my dramatic musician ex-boyfriend threw a solipsistic, petty, tortured-artist hissy fit at the liars/yeah yeah yeahs/jsbx show because his band had played shows with liars months before (right as the Gern Blandston release) and he was pissed that the liars had gotten so popular in such a short time whereas his own band was still doing crappy club tours--never mind the fact of the liars being 39993X better than the ex-boyfriend's band. I danced that much more exuberantly and dumped the whiner the next day.

The last time I can remember was "THAT person" (the complainer) was at a Steve Malkmus show in which he solo'd very badly for like an hour. I feel completely justified.

Which tour?

My sister dragged me to Low in October. I don't think I've done this.

sundar subramanian (sundar), Wednesday, 20 August 2003 02:17 (twenty-two years ago)

i took strongo to an indie show and he whined the whole time about how the rhythms were shite

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Wednesday, 20 August 2003 02:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Went with a buddy to see Ted Nugent, Deep Purple, Skynyrd... He didn't care about Nuge/Purple, I didn't care much about Skynyrd. Wasn't awful by any means, we each had fun but for the separate bands. He hated the Nuge and wasn't into Purple. Skynyrd was cool on my part, but i was more interested in the girl near by us.
Similarly, I saw KISS in 2000 when Nuge/Skid Row were opening. My buddy who went with me there had NO interest in any of the bands, though ultimately had a good time... so I just gotta refute its not always a horror story.

Bryan Moore (Bryan Moore), Wednesday, 20 August 2003 02:46 (twenty-two years ago)

I am the girl who has ruined rock shows for loads of boys by complaining to go home before the band has even started, but that's no surprise because I usually complain to go home from everywhere. But can I just say that I also read this thread as 'hey look everyone I'm quite tough'. Also I have had some bad times with people at shows like a classic one was where I went to a noise show with my new noise friends and my old rock friend took offense at me for a traitor and started throwing snooker balls at everyone. What about this for being a treacherous girl who's bad to take to shows - I went to see my boyfriend's band and I was the only one there and I was trying to sneak out the door by moving my chair closer and closer and every time I got near he would say over the microphone 'M---n I can see what you're doing'.

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Wednesday, 20 August 2003 03:17 (twenty-two years ago)

one time i took my ex-g/f to a Borbetomagus show. obviously everything that proceeded from there is my fault, not hers.

Dave M. (rotten03), Wednesday, 20 August 2003 03:25 (twenty-two years ago)

An ex-g/f of mine actually fell asleep during a Courtney Pine gig.

She got her revenge for dragging her along to that by forcing me to accompany her to see Simply Red 'though.

nnnh oh oh nnnh nnnh oh (James Blount), Wednesday, 20 August 2003 07:53 (twenty-two years ago)

Colin Meeder (Mert), Wednesday, 20 August 2003 08:03 (twenty-two years ago)

i stopped inviting my gfs to my own gigs ages ago. sometimes they still come along but i'm never convinced it's their thing really

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Wednesday, 20 August 2003 08:09 (twenty-two years ago)

I think I told this story before, but whatever.

I took MYSELF to a show @ the Fez (ugh) during CMJ a couple of years ago - it was w/ a bunch of people I met through the March Records mailing list via my ex-gf. She was there canoodling with her then-bf, with everyone else in our groop stuffed into the ever-so-small back booth area. I was there, too. I was a mess. In the corner of the booth, nursing this cold that came out of nowhere - I sat with an overpriced cup of tea under my nose & 35 bazillion used kleenex scattered around my territory. I took some niiiice cold mecidine just before the showcase started, which probably made what followed either horribly interminable or surprisingly pleasant.

It was a Le Grand Magistery showcase, just around the time that M0Mu$ was getting sued by W3ndy C@rl0$. Mr. Magistery was not in good spirits that night (or maybe he was in too good a spirit) - his between-set monologues were filled with interminable blather and punctuated by crying jags & what have you. He also did some Kreskin / magician type thing, too. That didn't really fly. As for the groups, some were OK (seeing Stars play the same 3 songs AGAIN was a bit irksome), some were awful (cf. Toog wearing nothing but bondage gear making like watered-down Gainsbourg), and one was Baxendale (hello acquired taste!). Our group left just as M0Mu$ (the headliner) hit the stage w/ some talk-to-your-palm-pilot schtick. I spent most of the show heckling - I might've heckled M0Mu$, too, I can't remember. I was such a fucking jerk, even though I had fun (in my own indomitable doped-up hack-wheeze-cough way) in spite of it all.

I just realized - this story is totally anticlimactic and boring. Sorry.

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Wednesday, 20 August 2003 08:19 (twenty-two years ago)

"turnabout is fairplay"

Well.... yeah.... but only as long as you get more turns that they do, surely?!? ;~)

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Wednesday, 20 August 2003 08:36 (twenty-two years ago)

"sometimes i feel like paying an audience member to heckle me"

Yeah - you get 'em to shout things out to which you already have cool, witty, spontaneous, off-the-cuff responses and put-downs already prepared and rehearsed!

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Wednesday, 20 August 2003 08:39 (twenty-two years ago)

nah, any old heckle is good!! my favourite is "play some Cold Chisel"

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Wednesday, 20 August 2003 08:45 (twenty-two years ago)

I've been "that guy" a couple of times. A friend of mine once had extra tickets to an Eminem show. I don't like Eminem but they didn't cost me a lot and since I was visiting my friend out of town, I just figured that at least we'd get to hang out together. I was yawning, making sarcastic comments about the show and the crowd, looking bored and all I wanted to do was sit down, have a drink and wait it out.

I also made the mistake of going with a friend to see Steve Kimock once at a festival. There was nothing else that I wanted to see for a couple hours so I just went along for the company. The band played the same song for an hour while a bunch of sweaty hippies swayed and bounced around as if something really great were happening. I just left the stage area and camped out at the beer tent until it was over.

J-rock (Julien Sandiford), Wednesday, 20 August 2003 09:12 (twenty-two years ago)

I just realized - this story is totally anticlimactic and boring. Sorry.

You can always salvage a boring story by ending it with:
"But I found $50."
-OR-
"And then a bird shit in my hair."

dave225 (Dave225), Wednesday, 20 August 2003 10:22 (twenty-two years ago)

''one time i took my ex-g/f to a Borbetomagus show. obviously everything that proceeded from there is my fault, not hers.''

I'd have to agree.

I do have a couple of friends but I would never ever invite them to a show unless he was interested in the band or music in general. Its unfair to put anyone through that and if you love the music then sitting through the dull bits in between sets or waiting for a bit is a small price to pay.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Wednesday, 20 August 2003 11:52 (twenty-two years ago)

I completely fuck-up your meme here because Emma loves gigs and I don't, hence it's normally me sitting in the corner drinking a pint of Guinness and waiting for the encore to finish.

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Wednesday, 20 August 2003 12:11 (twenty-two years ago)

OK, but, sub-thread - honestly - hasn't anyone here ever BEEN that person?

yeah... although, i waited modest mouse out like a champ and let her hang out up front and have a good time.

there have been some other times when a show was going really late and i was really tired that it was partly me, partly them. we ditched in the middle of an oldham show. and didn't stay for second sets by damo suzuki and maybe sun city girls... i can't remember if scg were going to play a second set or not. it was late. we were leaving. i missed outhud cause of tiredness...

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Wednesday, 20 August 2003 12:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Has anyone ever dragged themselves to a show they really didn't want to go to, and then been annoyed with themselves for not liking it at all? That was me at a Blues Explosion show earlier this year.

Tom Breihan (Tom Breihan), Wednesday, 20 August 2003 12:39 (twenty-two years ago)

What about when you take someone to see a band you've been raving about for months and months, but this person doesn't believe you and is skeptical; but they come along anyway and the band turn out to be utter gobshite. Consequently, there is a degree of told-you-so-ness.

clive (Clive), Wednesday, 20 August 2003 14:23 (twenty-two years ago)

I once took a friend to a gig I'd been really going on about. I enjoyed the performance, but spent the majority of it worrying that it wasn't their best, and my friend would pick up on it. I tentatively asked what they though of it at the end, expecting "Ah well didn't rate them really", and they told me they'd really enjoyed it. Strange.

My point being of course that I think I enjoyed the gig less because of this worry, and felt stupid/robbed afterwards because I'd been paranoid.
