Referring to previous threads as a response to questions - C or D?

I mean, especially with the Search feature all weird now. There is a certian smug-ness to linking to a previously discussed thread, no? I'm sure many folks are just as hesitant to check out a thread with 495 answers as I am - a bit much to wade through, yes? Why NOT start a new thread? What's the big deal? Am I alone here?

The search feauture is sorted out.

If i feel like doing it then i will (looking smug is not something i worry abt) because I feel its necessary.

I did it on the brotzmann thread this morning bcz that was slightly diff (primarily abt him live though we discussed the records there too).

besides, certain bands have 3-4 threads on them, some of these have 1-2 posts. what abt that eh?

Referring people to previous threads repeating the topic: Classic or Dud?

..from two months ago..

I do this a lot, mainly because I like looking at the old stuff. The new duplicate threads are grate because they spur me to go digging around and reading old stuff, and I like doing this.

The other reason is that when you link any thread to any other thread, a "trackback" link is affixed to the thread that was linked TO, allowing a reader of the original thread to see what other threads have linked to it. I think this is grate.

There's also a case to be made that Science doesn't work if you reinvent the wheel with every experiment(alist).

I always assume that if someone is interested enough in a topic to start a thread on it, they would be interested enough to read what people have already said about it.

...or at least take the time to see if said topic hasn't already been covered.

Exactly.

It also makes the archive more useful if you don't have to go through more than one (reasonably short) thread about the same subject. (I would do anything for the archive.)

And any time Psychic TV has come up (if that's what inspired this), not much gets said about it, so it makes even more sense to refer back to previous threads. I said a lot previously on the thread I linked to, and while the writing could be improved, I probably will never be motivated enough to write a new version.

(Last time I listened to that track with the Brian Jones interview, I didn't like it nearly as much, but I was listening from a poor cassette copy of vinyl.)

I thought the point in asking the question would be to find out what other people thought, so why not take advantage of the information that's already available? It's kind of ignorant and rude not to, really.
