a "bar" is a system of measuring time in music.

"8-bar" is an offshoot of uk garage that - aside from more straight up sonic differences like the bass sounds, replacing snares with claps, etc. - changes up beats/bass or just bass or just beats every 8 bars. sometimes this involves different sequences of claps/beats and bass switching up; sometimes it can just be a bassline skipping up and down octaves across the bars.

the earliest stuff was very stripped down, as a sort of "response" to the clutter uk garage?, but the newest stuff (see productions by jammer and danny weed & target) are getting very baroque, almost like prog-8-bar.

What is the source of the term eightbar?

hi, two in one day

i think 8-bar has now become more strictly defined by the term sub-low. it is generally made by producers as instrumentals used specifically for live performance ie. pirate radio, sound clashes. whereas the producers hulkington refers to in his last paragraph often make instrumental riddims with specific mcs in mind or for group vocal recordings. i think it would be hard to argue that jammer and danny weed and sticky for instance make 8-bar because aesthetically it is so far removed from the original concept incorporating more acoustic sounds, regardless of whether their compositions maintain the original 8-bar measure. get me?

some 'classics' in the 8 bar genre off the top:
jon e cash - war
wiley - eskimo, ice rink, igloo
musical mob - pulse x
plasticman - venom
sticky - golly gosh
youngstar - formula 2
bionics vs slimzee - the capsule
dizzee rascal - go

hope this helps

Actually I've heard Wiley refer to Roll Deep's Salt Beef as being 8 bar...

one month passes...
the template is pulse x. that started it all. go to http://www.juno.co.uk for a start. the older stuff is harder to get. http://www.independance-records.co.uk/ug.htm is good too.

from the current XLR8R re:"Sublow, grimey, 8-bar:

"Note to two-step producers: 200 obscure micro-genres do not legitacy make. But at least none of them contains the wor progressive"

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Sunday, 28 March 2004 04:44 (twenty-two years ago)

that should be "word".

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Sunday, 28 March 2004 04:45 (twenty-two years ago)

The term 8bar is redundant now. Grime prevails with Wiley and Jon E Cash each using their personalised "eski" and "sublow" terms.
