yeah, boring is right. otm with goo goo dolls comparison too.

I don't really loathe them, they're harmless enough. Like DMB and Hootie and the Blowfish, you can't really hate their music that much. They're harmless. It would be like hating milk or oatmeal.

I think it's the popularity they achieve that conjures most of the ire and ill will directed their way.

My exasperation at their blandness is pretty much mitigated by the fact that they're all very nice guys and they pick good opening acts like the Old 97's.

Their guitarist is from my home town, and something of a local hero. In middle school, when I was more bitter and more easily mistaken for a girl, their first album was the "jock" crowd's favorite, so it was my duty as a "real music fan" to hate it intensely. I'm over it now. They're okay. I like parts of a few songs, but mostly I just don't find them interesting.

matchbox 20 is pretty much indistinguishable from many other bands on commercial radio. the best thing i can say about them is that my ears have never seceded from my body in an attempt to flee while their music is playing.

because simple face: ITS BORING!!! it's just safe, radio friendly, middle of the road, corporate rock. it's not too heavy, it's not too light, it's just right. it won't upset anyone, but it will still make a few suits feel staunch having this sitting next to BLUE in their CD collection.

rock & roll ain't meant to be safe! where's the self destructive junkie rock star when you need them??? these guys are so boring they don't even know how to PUKE!

I can't hate them, in part because they're partially responsible for the Counting Crows & Hootie getting the commercial shaft. Better one sorta mediocre band than two (though Matchbox could use a little of Counting Crows' Van Morrison influence). The dude can be endearing in his attempted poetics, especially since he doesn't have that stud rasp thing that the dude from the Goo Goo Dolls had. I remember seeing a little of Matchbox 20 live on TV and that was boring, but singles like "If You're Gone," "Unwell," and...ok, those two are touching maybe in part BECAUSE of his bumblin'.

Oh, and "Smooth" was cute. Is it bad that I like recent Santana singles because they remind me of the Miami Sound Machine? Is that an insult to him?
