May as well.
Inspired by Dave Matthews Band : Name Your Reasons Why They Are So Bad & Hated.

Why are Creed so bad and REALLY hated?
Is this the thread to beat Dave Matthews Band : Name Your Reasons Why They Are So Bad & Hated. ?

Rocket Man, Friday, 29 August 2003 19:06 (twenty-two years ago)

A dull prospect for a thread. Like the band.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 29 August 2003 19:09 (twenty-two years ago)

i doubt creed has an Allison in their fanbase, so there's really no chance it can rival the DMB thread

Felcher (Felcher), Friday, 29 August 2003 19:13 (twenty-two years ago)

Allison, Allison, who the fuck is Allison

I really like their vidoes! Very post-apocalyptic..

Dave Matthews Band : Name Your Reasons Why They Are So Bad & Hated.
read, and watch her keep the thread from falling apart under the sheer weight of DMB hate

Felcher (Felcher), Friday, 29 August 2003 20:13 (twenty-two years ago)

Dunno. I despise them because they sound like Pearl Jam. I.o.w. I despise Pearl Jam just as much as I despise Creed.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Friday, 29 August 2003 22:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh god. My life just flashed before my eyes. I say we all back slowly out of this thread, nail the door shut and then brick it over. I suspect no good will ever come from this.
Especially if a Creed Fan Club comes in here.
Brrr....

I think I have to lie down now until the room stops spinning.

Lord Custos Epsilon (Lord Custos Epsilon), Saturday, 30 August 2003 03:06 (twenty-two years ago)

I find Creed to be perhaps the finest alternative rock group of the 21st century thus far, combining a truly spiritual lyrical POV with an innovative, layered, subtle sound that borders on transcendental.

Classic!

August fool, ha ha ha

ham on rye (ham on rye), Saturday, 30 August 2003 03:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Their guitarist is really unoriginal and awful, though

Sonny A. (Keiko), Saturday, 30 August 2003 03:19 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm with geir (although melody means nothing to me & rhythm & tone are all that matters ever). just like pearl jam w/ those wrought vox & sub-generic samey blah.

autovac (autovac), Saturday, 30 August 2003 04:00 (twenty-two years ago)

lord knows i'm no PJ (or Beddie Wetter) fan for any of a half-zillion reasons, but they have shown more variation in their music than Creed ever has (or seems to have the ability to do). not to mention that PJ has pride of place, doing this sorta thing first 'n all that.

to quote Alex in NYC: if you like Creed, then you are clearly a moron. there is no argument. it ends there.

Tad (llamasfur), Saturday, 30 August 2003 04:11 (twenty-two years ago)

OMG! Tanya Headon hasn't kicked the crap outta Creed yet. I don't see their name in her archives!
Why does this suddenly alarm me?
You'd think she woulda decimated Creed once a week, every week, for at least a year...
Damn.

Lord Custos Epsilon (Lord Custos Epsilon), Saturday, 30 August 2003 04:19 (twenty-two years ago)

Creed are the best band around just now. A truly enigmatic singer in Scott Stapp (unlike the dull Dave Matthews of the DMB(now THEY are the worst band ever) They have great meaningful lyrics and they do NOT have an unoriginal guitar player. Anyone who has seen them live(apart from Chicago) knows how great they are.
Creed Rocks!

Ricky, Saturday, 30 August 2003 05:04 (twenty-two years ago)

Must...not...kill...Geir...

Andrew Frye (paul cox), Saturday, 30 August 2003 05:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Seems simple -- a classic Mass Club (or, if you're in a less generous mood, Mass Cult) band for our time. Means too much to those in the circle. Means nothing to those outside it.

Dock Miles (Dock Miles), Saturday, 30 August 2003 06:43 (twenty-two years ago)

I have several fond memories of Creed; a good friend of mine had two of their albums. We made fun of him for it constantly! it was great!

daria g (daria g), Saturday, 30 August 2003 06:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Creed have lots of great melodic songs. There isnt a better melodic hard rock band out there just now. Pearl Jam are awful, I dont know any other Creed Fans who like PJ. Creed are leagues better.
You guys wouldnt know good music if it came up and bit your ass.

Ryan Geoghan, Saturday, 30 August 2003 10:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Andrew Frye (paul cox), Saturday, 30 August 2003 10:20 (twenty-two years ago)

That doesn't sound like very good music to me.

Øystein Holm-Olsen (Øystein H-O), Saturday, 30 August 2003 10:29 (twenty-two years ago)

I agree with Ryan, Pearl Jam are terrible , nowhere near in the league of Creed. Millions of album sales and legions of fans all over the world. Creed are simply the best hard rock band in the world today.

Jennifer Howard, Saturday, 30 August 2003 12:06 (twenty-two years ago)

if creed are 'the best hard rock band in the world today' then yr view of the world mustn't go beyond the realm of yr tv.
check yr pulse, baby. it's time to go forth and live.
christ, go get some real rawk...
creeds bottom dwelling mentality and aliceinchainsmeetsperaljam vocals put a bug in my ass as well as the the totally uninspired music that accompanies it.
oh, and didn't stapp can the real band?? ya know, the one that used to be creed?
his pseudo-christian schtick is pretty worn too...

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Saturday, 30 August 2003 13:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Seconded.

Simon H., Saturday, 30 August 2003 13:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Because Pearl Jam can actually be good.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 30 August 2003 13:58 (twenty-two years ago)

To be fair, if there actually was a God he'd probably like Creed.
I'm sure the legions of crusading fans would crucify me for such heresy, but I'd prefer hell with Motorhead if heaven meant Creed.

ham on rye (ham on rye), Saturday, 30 August 2003 16:22 (twenty-two years ago)

To be fair, if there actually was a God he'd probably like Creed.

Oh come on this is unfair!!

I know people who aren't morons (saying they are because they listen to creed might be a little unfair too)

Sonny A. (Keiko), Saturday, 30 August 2003 16:31 (twenty-two years ago)

I think even God gets a little tired of the Jesus Christ poses after a while. Note: the bassist in my band, who worked for Pop-Up Video for several years, reports that one factoid he found out was that the lead singer was actually upset that he didn't get to do his crucifixtion pose EVEN MORE OFTEN in their videos, and would continually pester the directors about it. Creed is the Classic Dud.

Jesse Fuchs (Jesse Fuchs), Saturday, 30 August 2003 17:20 (twenty-two years ago)

You're right, God probably wouldn't like Creed. He might dig on U2 though.

However, I do believe in Jesus, who has returned to get jiggy.

people are entitled to other peoples opinions, this bb has no purpose but to spam, flame and create wars between different groups of people with different intrests and tastes in music.

i fail to see the point.
or is it one of those, "i feel better when i put a large popular band down" things?

also your hait for this band is blind and not really backed up.
Are you just trying to vow your opinions based on the group of people here so yu will be "cool" to the rest of them? probly yes, or this bb would have never been created.

Please prove me wrong

-- Geir Hongro (geirhon...), August 29th, 2003.

What do you know about music Geir Hongro? Nothing probably. Creed sound NOTHING like Pearl Jam. Pearl Jam havent made a decent album in 10 years for a start. Creed make hi quality melodic hard rock with great spiritual lyrics. They are also awesome live, as anyone who has ever seen them live will testify. When you have heard all their albums and seen them live Geir Hongro then you will be qualified to judge them.

Leigh Westbridge, Sunday, 31 August 2003 13:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Leigh have you heard all of Pearl Jam's albums and seen them live?

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Sunday, 31 August 2003 13:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Indeed i have. I lost interest in Pearl Jam though after No Code. That and Vitalogy were awful albums. Musically they have nothing in common with Creed. And as for Scotts vocals they resemble more Layne Staley than Eddie Bedwetter but I wouldnt say they were identical. It just annoys me when people like Geir Hongro dont give a reason for anything just giving the 'bot' answers "they sound like pearl jam, pearl jam suck so i hate creed"
I dont expect everyone to like Creed. It doesnt matter. Each to his own. But Geir Hongro just gave that lazy response so I felt compelled to reply.

Leigh Westbridge, Sunday, 31 August 2003 13:45 (twenty-two years ago)

None of us has heard all of Creed's albums or seen them live, so leave us alone!

ps their guitar player really isn't very original at all!!

Sonny A. (Keiko), Sunday, 31 August 2003 14:31 (twenty-two years ago)

anybody notice that you can cut-n-paste certain responses from the DMB thread into here?

like the ones about "big selling != quality", "how much do you need to hear to HATE", etc.

Robby, Sunday, 31 August 2003 16:57 (twenty-two years ago)

Geir will ignore it as usual. Dont try to goad him , it wont work. Nothing pisses him off.

Davie, Sunday, 31 August 2003 18:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Pearl Jam are shit. And who cares about "ten" and "vs" that was a generation ago. Creed are modern and outsell PJ because they are superior imo.
Geir Hongro , you question the intelligence of hard rock/metal fans elswhere on this board i see. Well i think its a shame that someone is so bigoted and ignorant in this day and age.
Its not important who likes/dislikes creed. Each to their own, but we can do without those attacks.

Davis, Sunday, 31 August 2003 23:07 (twenty-two years ago)

Geir's only obsession is melodicism, a quality of which Creed is in short supply.

Andrew Frye (paul cox), Monday, 1 September 2003 01:18 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't despise Creed so much as I despise the fact that so many people don't see past their blazing mediocrity. Personally, I find it very easy to dismiss Creed completely, and I am completely befuddled whenever anyone says that they acutally dig Creed. I think that Creed doesn't have anything to offer that a thousand other bands didn't do a thousand times better. I think that Creed is the musical equivalant of plain, unbuttered, un-sour-cream-and-Bacoed mashed potatoes, only minus the starch and carbohydrates.

Helltime Producto (Pavlik), Monday, 1 September 2003 01:33 (twenty-two years ago)

I agree with Helltime, especially the food metaphors.

Andrew Frye (paul cox), Monday, 1 September 2003 01:38 (twenty-two years ago)

I love plain, unbuttered mashed potatoes.

But I don't love Creed.

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Monday, 1 September 2003 01:42 (twenty-two years ago)

Helltime Producto (Pavlik), Monday, 1 September 2003 02:13 (twenty-two years ago)

Does Momus sound like Creed?

Promus, Monday, 1 September 2003 02:20 (twenty-two years ago)

I think the more important question is Whou would win in a fight between Momus and Promus. And a less important question is Who will go to the store and buy my drunk ass a pack of smokes?

Helltime Producto (Pavlik), Monday, 1 September 2003 02:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Creed are a great band. If you lot don't like them then so what. Its your loss. Go back and listen to your Flaming Lips and your crappy Nirvana indie rock mush.

Rascal, Monday, 1 September 2003 02:59 (twenty-two years ago)

They're not great. They're mediocre. Everything they do is a watered-down regurgitation of something else, they have no original ideas and their singer acts like a pompous ass. Unless you are being sarcastic, rascal, you are just not having discriminating taste.

Helltime Producto (Pavlik), Monday, 1 September 2003 03:08 (twenty-two years ago)

cheese, Monday, 1 September 2003 10:08 (twenty-two years ago)

1.  There are better, true Christian rock groups out there, bands with actual messages and a true need to get out the word instead of posturing and teetering ever so close to actually saying something without actually saying something.
2.  Creed don't rip off Pearl Jam. No they don't. They rip off the Goo Goo Dolls instead, which is even more of a crime considering how long the Goo Goo Dolls have been going and how much better they are overall. Even their mid-'90s Sensitive Band transformation.
3.  If you're truly interested in listening to an uplifting message with a sound that doesn't sound watered down, try Anberlin or dc Talk or any other similar musical artist instead.
4.  Creed are BLAND! I'm proud to call myself a Christian *and* do not appreciate having even anything approximating my faith's message delivered quite so soullessly. Gosh, even those Time-Life Sounds of Worship songs sound like they're sung more from the heart.

I have an aversion to bands where the singer looks like he spends a lot of time in the gym. I don't want to listen to muscle-guys make music.

That goes for Henry Rollins, too.

some guy, Monday, 1 September 2003 16:19 (twenty-two years ago)

Even God hates Creed. If there is a band I despise in this world is Creed. I'm not much of a PJ fan, but god, you can't compare them with this piece shit. At least Pearl Jam made music. I mean, talk about uninspired, riff-stealing, stuckup posturing jackasses. Its as if someone took the idea of grunge, ate it and then took a dump. That dump is Creed. Its grunge without all the nutrients, w/o all the energy. Creed is the 'rock' band non-music fans like. Its the band jocks and cacos say has 'deeper' meaning.
And concerning the JC pose: "I'll bury you rich, I'll bury you poor, in your Jesus Christ pose" - Soundgarden, Jesus Christ Pose

"Creed are a great band. If you lot don't like them then so what. Its your loss. Go back and listen to your Flaming Lips and your crappy Nirvana indie rock mush.", I hope this was an 'ironic' statement.

Cacaman Flores, Monday, 1 September 2003 19:20 (twenty-two years ago)

I dig "With Arms Wide Open" cuz it's self-loathing, warmhearted and grandiose. Plus they performed it at the end of the VH1 Music Awards with big beaming smiles cuz they just won some awards.

And sorry, Creed is Pearl Jam minus anything remotely indie. Right down to the possibly alcoholic singer (though Rattle & Hum Bono is a big influence too). I remember when "My Own Prison" came out, people REFUSED to believe it wasn't Pearl Jam. They only believed when the band announced its approval of monotheism on "What's This Life For." The funny thing is Pearl Jam was getting into Buddhist/Eastern stuff right at the same time.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Monday, 1 September 2003 19:26 (twenty-two years ago)

oh and Creed does suck. If the song isn't a big triumphant piece of Pearl Jam For Jesus hooey it's usually much worse (attempts at metal like "Bullets" and "What If"). And I can't listen to much overblown stadium-PJ in a row.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Monday, 1 September 2003 19:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Creed were relatively ignored by Tallahasseeans until one of the local modern rock DJs picked up on them and started playing them like fuck. Everybody thought they were great, the manager of the local mainstream college-rock showcasing venue left his position to manage them, and it was just a matter of timing. BAM! Corporate media mergers! Alan Metzler bought out Grass Records, converted it to Wind-Up, kicked off everyone on the label who didn't want to play polished rock, signed Creed on after "My Own Prison" and "Torn" appeared on the aforementioned modern-rock station's Locals Only compilation, and voila! (And later on the likes of Evanescence, 12 Stones, blah blah got signed to Wind-Up as well, so Creed's essentially responsible for their ascent, too.) Once Creed got huge, they moved to California, denied that they emerged from here (thankfully so...they started claiming they were from Orlando and so it's better that they receive the blame), never played in Tallahassee again, and finally the citizens of this medium-sized backwater burg -- lousy excuse for a college town -- realised en masse that they were just "watered-down seventh generation rock" as claimed by Moby. The end.

(Oh wait...when the band split and the other three members formed Alter Bridge, they played their first gig here in Tally Ho even though they no longer live here and haven't visited here since pre-stardom. I think that certainly says something quite interesting about Stapp...)

seven years pass...

So I came across this article on Slate today (it's a few years old), but it argues that Creed is actually very good, and that they were hated for illegitimate reasons (in short, it was fashionable, they talked about God, their fans were uneducated white trash, their songs were too soaring and enjoyable, etc). Is there any credibility to this? I think I may have heard one Creed song in my life, but generally steered clear because... well, it was fashionable.
