Favorite band that died w/o any recognition

OK, I'm sitting here going through all my old Eric's Trip albums, and although they're lo-fi (not for snobby, but financial reasons), and I was thinking that its a shame that they never got any recognition outside of Canada's alternative stations (I don't mean Alternative here but alternative when it wasn't a synonym from Rock). Maybe it was the 4 track quality, maybe it was that their music was just "weird", but it's still great for me years later.

Anyway, to get to the point, what's your favorite local or even non-local band that you loved but never really caught on, even in indie/underground/whatever circles?

The Dustdevils!! Can you count bands (i.e. Tsunami, Codeine, Lilac Time, Eric's Trip, etc.) who made the Trouser Press '90's edition?

Oh, and Linda Smith, but she may still be putting things out. I haven't checked in a while, as she'll never equal the first 3-4 tapes.

I think it will be a tragedy if Swervedriver never puts another album out. They never got the attention they deserved. Eric's Trip was a pretty cool band too; I like the really pretty songs with huge distortion - thats one of my favorite things in music. They were defintely one of my faves from the whole lo-fi '90's scene.

A Nairn (moretap), Saturday, 6 September 2003 03:29 (twenty-one years ago)

There were a few entertaining bands in Bloomington, Indiana in the early to mid 90s (pre-Secretly Canadian/Jagjaguar) that really never got a shot or if they did, they missed.

Speed Luxury was a rocking band that had some great songs with a definite surf guitar and punk rock linage. They made an EP with John Strom (of the Blake Babies) for some small Indianapolis, Indiana label that went nowhere and they held back their best material for an album which never got recorded.

Frankie Camaro is an another amazing surf-influenced guitarist that other than being on a couple of surf guitar comps and putting out an instrumental record on Shredder, hasn't got his due. He has some really good songs with vocals that never got released. Still plays live.

Pencil was another really cool group. They made two albums for Grass records that just didn't capture what they could do, but it is better than nothing. They had problems keeping a regular bassist and never could tour outside the general area. They had some songs that rocked and were pretty funny at the same time.

Steve Kowalski Army recorded a couple of singles, a tape and were on a couple of comps, but never really put it together. They were a cool band, really hard mod influenced rock and roll. Bassist Jake Smith went on to marry Freda from The Blake Babies and later end up signed to Sony with a band called Mysteries of Life, but it was pretty tame considered to the SK Army. Mind you, the SK Army went along for a couple of years after he left (my old band played with them a few times)...Tom Shover was a great front man.

Ultra Vivid Scene... perhaps. Nick is right though, they are known in certain circles. I guess I think they should've at least had a chart hit or something.

dlp9001, Saturday, 6 September 2003 14:01 (twenty-one years ago)

Well, I like Almighty Trigger Happy (mostly just for Disturbo), Magic Hour (for No Excess Is Absurd), and U Totem (just for "One Nail Draws Another", which is all I've heard but which I just love in all its absurd excess) but none of these are among constantly-played artists or anything. I don't think any of my truly favourite artists died without any recognition. Is Immersion over? There's been nothing in 3 years so maybe. In that case, they totally win this as Low Impact really is among my favourite albums and hardly anyone gives them any recognition. Maybe I should give Eric's Trip another chance but I remember thinking they were the shittiest thing ever.

sundar subramanian (sundar), Saturday, 6 September 2003 14:35 (twenty-one years ago)

Did Okara get any recognition? Probably not as much as they deserved and they were among my top 5 bands at some point in the 90s.

sundar subramanian (sundar), Saturday, 6 September 2003 14:37 (twenty-one years ago)

Soul Side. Beautifuzz. Seppuku (whose unfortunate recording comes so far from doing them any justice that it's painful).

Clawhammer...whose records never really caught it, but who on a good night--which was most nights--happened to be Television, the MC5, and the Magic Band rolled up in a single package.

Boys From Nowhere, easily the best American garage band of the 80s.

Spinout, who became Acetone, but who sounded almost completely opposite.

(To name but three.)

LY, Sunday, 7 September 2003 07:53 (twenty-one years ago)

The Shop Assistants (Puncture and Trouser Press, but that's it as far as coverage), the Legendary Jim Ruiz Group (first album), the Appliances-SFB, Run Westy Run (live), Dark City Sisters (South Africa's Sun Sessions), the Limelighters (maybe recognized in folk circles), Exuma (ditto), Honor Roll, Bembeya Jazz (though they just toured, but I didn't see any national press), Don Shirley (surprisingly ignored), Junkyard Band (died on the vine at Def Jam), Sir Shina Adewala, the Rulers (great obscure Jamaican band).

Somewhere all of us have our own personal Mojo laid out in our mind's eye...

Lexington, KY's 10 Foot Pole.

I specify band-location cuz I know now there was another band called 10 Foot Pole from Cali, but they were nowhere near as badical as this 10 Foot Pole. First time I ever stage-dove was at one of their shows when I was 14. Fucking great band though.

actually they're still together but they are a shade of what they used to be, the band that recorded 36 cents an hour on the UK label Che was awesome (so was the subsequent live band); now they moved to LA and it's all new people and it's not working (for me).

There was a band called Helicopter in Newcastle, England, in the early 90s, who used to play the most awesome song ever, called simply 'Cool'. The lyrics to the entire song went 'She...she says that it's cool...' but it was a HUGE pop song and the vocalist was fantastic. I think they supported Blur once at the local Uni, and then disappeared.

eleki-san (eleki-san), Friday, 7 May 2004 17:56 (twenty-one years ago)

The Ama-Dots. One of the few no-wave type bands I remember gigging around the midwest in the early 80s. The singer's name was Boolah, I believe, and she made unearthly whooping & gutteral sounds while the guitar player got funky with pliers & such. They were from Milwaukee & released a fantastic EP called "Hit Girls".

Pablo Cruise (chaki), Friday, 7 May 2004 18:31 (twenty-one years ago)

According to CREEM Metal magazine, Belfegore consisted of one German, one American, and one Canadian. The German was indeed Meikel Clauss. I think they might have released an EP in Europe in addition to their 1984 Elektra album, but I'm not sure.

Signed to Elektra. Produced by Conny Plank. Toured incongruously Statesidw with Hanoi Rocks. Shot one unbefuckyouassholeyoudienowlievably cool video, directed by Zbigniew Rybczynski for "All that I Wanted". Shameless Killing Joke disciples. I know of them simply because THEY ROCKED when so many fail to.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 7 May 2004 20:23 (twenty-one years ago)

wow, now i see. don't get me wrong but meeting someone outside germany who even *knows* them is surprising enough. Nichts was the very first band i saw live at a tender age of 14 and especially Meikel & his strat left a permanent impression on me. i still have a Belfegore ep (with that marble cover) but i haven't listened to it for...a very long time.
i didn't knew that their stateside tour was such a success ? need to do some research now...

eleki-san (eleki-san), Friday, 7 May 2004 21:18 (twenty-one years ago)

They were a short-lived San Francisco punk band that were awesome. They've got an entire album up (sans two short noise interludes) on epitonic.com. Just plain catchy, good, sugary punk. They're the first band I ever discovered on my own and went nuts finding everything in their discography (all I'm lacking is a single compilation track).
