...please somebody help me get excited to be covering the Poison concert tonight. Please, PLEASE, someone at least convince me that it won't be the worst evening spent since I had the trots.

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Wednesday, 10 September 2003 13:44 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't know what the trots are, but they're invariably more fun than a Poison show.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 10 September 2003 13:53 (twenty-two years ago)

Talk Dirty -v- Dirty Skivs

dave225 (Dave225), Wednesday, 10 September 2003 13:55 (twenty-two years ago)

Ned to thread (cuz I can't help you, have fun in HESHER HELL).

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 10 September 2003 14:11 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm going to spend the night in an arena full of people who used to beat me up in grade school.

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Wednesday, 10 September 2003 14:22 (twenty-two years ago)

How many people did you piss off when you were ten???

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 10 September 2003 14:35 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't know what the trots are

Erm, it refers to the need to trot frequently to the toilet...

Jez (Jez), Wednesday, 10 September 2003 15:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Night after night, sin after sin.

Horace, if you're not enthused, think of all the grist for the mill for your standup routines.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 10 September 2003 15:11 (twenty-two years ago)

Dude, how can you NOT be looking forward to this? THINK OF THE MULLETS!!!

nickalicious (nickalicious), Wednesday, 10 September 2003 15:12 (twenty-two years ago)

Opening act: Vince Neil!

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Wednesday, 10 September 2003 15:20 (twenty-two years ago)

Actually, Horace, you should read these posts...

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 10 September 2003 15:24 (twenty-two years ago)

You are all complete mentalists, Poison's going to be awesome, I'd cover the damn show for you myself if I was in the area & you could keep the money, too. Don't "think of the mullets": just give yourself over to the show, ask yourself what about the experience it is that's making all the other people there enjoy it so much & try to lock into that. It'll be great.

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Wednesday, 10 September 2003 15:34 (twenty-two years ago)

That's why, if I had your job, Horace, I'd be collecting the Jumbles from the newspaper everyday.

peepee (peepee), Wednesday, 10 September 2003 15:49 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, I think that like my review of Sum 41 (was that all the way back in May?) the story will be in the audience rather than the stage. (Highlight of Sum 41 concert: 8 yr-old standing on his seat dancing and giving devil horns while his father all but falls asleep. I gave that kid two paragraphs. He was so awesome, and props to his poppa for taking him out there!)

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Wednesday, 10 September 2003 15:49 (twenty-two years ago)

also, still unassigned is Def Leppard on Saturday.

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Wednesday, 10 September 2003 15:51 (twenty-two years ago)

First live band I ever saw was Poison, at the Capital Center in Landover, Maryland, opening for David Lee Roth on the Skyscraper Tour in '88.
I was only 13, but I recognized it even then as I scanned the audience of waste-oids, scuzz-o's, and chest flashing chicks: Best people watching of ALL TIME.
Have a blast.

Ben Boyer (Ben Boyer), Wednesday, 10 September 2003 15:53 (twenty-two years ago)

Horace, every rose has its thorn,
and then something about a cowboy and a sad, sad song
You get what I mean.

Bruce Urquhart (Bruce Urquhart), Wednesday, 10 September 2003 15:58 (twenty-two years ago)

to see you cuts me lahk a knahf

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Wednesday, 10 September 2003 16:04 (twenty-two years ago)

DUDE YOU MUST GET TO THE DEF LEPPARD SHOW!

I was just telling someone that of all the bands of that "era", the only ones I'd go to see in concert are Def Leppard and Bon Jovi (And only if the Bon Jovi tix were free).

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 10 September 2003 16:11 (twenty-two years ago)

HOW ON GOD'S EARTH COULD ANYONE NOT BE EXCITED ABOUT GOING TO A POISON SHOW. I WOULD TRADE PLACES WITH YOU IN AN INSTANT HORACE. THE GREATEST BAND ON PLANET EARTH.

BON JOVI ARE GREAT IN CONCERT TOO.

jel -- (jel), Wednesday, 10 September 2003 16:24 (twenty-two years ago)

Hey Horace, maybe its some POISONED show, now that would be a trip.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Wednesday, 10 September 2003 16:36 (twenty-two years ago)

"GREATEST BAND ON PLANET EARTH"? Jel, it's not like he's going to see Dave Matthews Band.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 10 September 2003 16:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Ouch.

Def Leppard play Irvine Meadows at the start of October. Vaguely tempted.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 10 September 2003 17:04 (twenty-two years ago)

First live band I ever saw was Poison, at the Capital Center in Landover, Maryland, opening for David Lee Roth on the Skyscraper Tour in '88.

Wow. That was my first real live experience too, at age 13, at (what used to be) Brendan Byrne Arena in Jersey. What an experience!

scott m (mcd), Wednesday, 10 September 2003 17:42 (twenty-two years ago)

Weird, Scott. I remember it all so vividly -- Poison coming out as Bret Michaels bellowed "It's those bad fucking boys from Hollywooooood: Poison!"... and then Diamond Dave surfing in from the roof of the arena on a Jack Daniels surfboard.
"This must be just like livin' in paradise," I said to myself...

Ben Boyer (Ben Boyer), Wednesday, 10 September 2003 17:59 (twenty-two years ago)

I mean, jesus... look at this album cover!! Go ahead, Horace... open up and say aaaahhhhhh....

Ben Boyer (Ben Boyer), Wednesday, 10 September 2003 18:02 (twenty-two years ago)

I thought that the Go-Go's had 5 members.

peepee (peepee), Wednesday, 10 September 2003 18:08 (twenty-two years ago)

That means one of them was a shemale dromedary!

donut bitch (donut), Wednesday, 10 September 2003 20:01 (twenty-two years ago)

close your eyes and pretend they're the ramones, for real.

teeny (teeny), Wednesday, 10 September 2003 20:05 (twenty-two years ago)

You have killed any lingering desire I may have ever had to listen to The Ramones.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 10 September 2003 20:12 (twenty-two years ago)

close your eyes and pretend they're the ramones, for real.

Nurse, fetch my matches!!!!!! BURN, HERETIC, BURN!

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 10 September 2003 20:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Listen to "Talk Dirty To Me" and tell me that's not a Ramones song.

teeny (teeny), Wednesday, 10 September 2003 20:20 (twenty-two years ago)

It's not a Ramones song.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 10 September 2003 20:21 (twenty-two years ago)

You didn't listen!

teeny (teeny), Wednesday, 10 September 2003 20:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Johnny Ramone would never jizz all over a track with as many masturbatory solos as C.C.Deville. Brett sounds N-O-T-H-I-N-G! like Joey Ramone. Rikki Roket is far too concerned with his lipsticked pout to play with the stamina of Tommy Ramone, much less Marky (or evern Richie....or Clemmy...or...) etc.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 10 September 2003 20:24 (twenty-two years ago)

Did I say it was a Ramones performance?

teeny (teeny), Wednesday, 10 September 2003 20:25 (twenty-two years ago)

I think teeny might be referring to the end of the riff, where the guitar does this half-step slide thing three times in succession. Total punk rock move (cf. The Damned "Neat Neat Neat" or the beginning of the Sex Pistols' "God Save the Queen").

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Wednesday, 10 September 2003 20:33 (twenty-two years ago)

the international telepaths were covering "talk dirty to me" in our practise room a few weeks ago and our flatmate went "cool shit, was that the new york dolls?"

gabbneb (gabbneb), Wednesday, 10 September 2003 20:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Are they still doing the makeup/poodle hair thing these days?

Siegbran (eofor), Wednesday, 10 September 2003 20:46 (twenty-two years ago)

They put on a really fun show. It'll be good. Sobriety will not, in all likelihood, enhance the experience.

sundar subramanian (sundar), Wednesday, 10 September 2003 22:07 (twenty-two years ago)

While there is an obvious"Talk Dirty to Me"/Ramones connection, I'll say that the chorus also reminds me a tiny bit of the Mary Chain in a weird way.

sundar subramanian (sundar), Wednesday, 10 September 2003 22:10 (twenty-two years ago)

I have to agree with Alex that "Talk Dirty To Me" doesn't sound like the Ramones (it's way too giddy to be the Bowery Boys). That said, I'm glad Teeny made the argument cuz Alex did one of those cute huff'n'puff deals about it.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Wednesday, 10 September 2003 22:16 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, I think "Ramones" was more just a general stand-in for "pop-punk that might get more cred in indie circles".

sundar subramanian (sundar), Wednesday, 10 September 2003 22:19 (twenty-two years ago)

post Sum-41 CC Deville guitar solos are pop-punk safe too!

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Wednesday, 10 September 2003 22:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Afew months back, I was on the tour bus with the local pro football cheerleaders, smoking all of bret michaels w33d. And i hate the music.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 11 September 2003 01:46 (twenty-two years ago)

All you little revisionists can lie to yourselves that Poison re-invented the wheel with their fourth-rate hairfarmer pabulum for all I care --- just don't sully the Ramones' good name in doing so.

VINCE NEIL GETS IN FIGHT WITH BRET MICHAELS & BOBBY DALL!

whoooooooo! With only a few remaining dates of the Poison tour, looks like things are starting to get fun!

This is a email we were just sent and it looks to be true. A few other people have reported this incident on Poison's message board. But first, here's the email we received:
Just to let ya know. I went to see Poison, Vince, and Skid Row, last night in Champaign, IL. After the show Bret Michaels did a meet and greet for his fan club at the tour bus. I was 4 feet from the bus door waiting for my turn to get a autograph from Bret. Next thing I know Vince Neil comes running up to the bus door. As Bret is signing a autograph for a girl, Vince pushes right past her, and starts yelling at Bret how they're a bunch of pussies then grabs Bret and tries to fight him. He started to pull Bret by his shirt then Poison's security pull Vince back and then Vince punches Poison's security guard in the head. Then all the security hold Vince up against a rental truck. After that Bret starts yelling to Vince to talk like brothers and come on the bus and calm down. As Vince is going on the bus, Bobby Dall starts yelling that Vince assaulted him. Then the cops show up and go on the Poison bus where Bret and Vince are. I waited around for over 2 hours nothing happened after that. Don't know if any one went to jail. I'm sure Vince won't be playing the 4 Cananda dates left on the tour. According to people there it was over a chick. Just thought I would share the excitement of the night.

Another email sent it to us about it:

Everything you said is true! I was one of the next ones in line also. I couldn't beleive what I was seeing. I personaly found it very disrespectful of Vince to do that in front of everyone like that. Bret keeping his composure till the punch was thrown making him jump off the bus. I have never liked Vince Neil and this incident makes me dislike him
even more. I could have been handled in a totally different manner. But that's Vince for ya'!
Meg

This is what's been posted on Poison's message board:

My friend and I decided to try and get an autograph so we went ahead and were standing in line between the bus and the rental truck...maybe 10 people back and heard the whole fight. There were some taller people in front that we couldn't see over but my hubby and his friend were waiting for us to get done and seen the whole thing!! Ya, it was Big John that got hit...you talk about pissed!! He was hot!! I did see him because they started to come down in between the bus, that was kinda scary. Ricky was in it too...he was trying to kick Vince's butt too. Hubby did see Vince hit Bobby. It was interesting to say the least. From what hubby heard it was over a girl and Ricky. When we left the word was that they were going to hall Vince off but I don't know how true that is. I never did get my autograph but they told us if we go to one of his solo concerts that we can get it then.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I can confirm there was a situation but as for details I actually seen nothing. We waited inside for over an hour for Rikki's M & G, they came out & told us it wasn't happening because some of the band members were unavailable for undisclosed reasons. When one lady started bitchin cause she had drove 3 hours one guy said "Sorry, read about it in the papers tomorrow!" So we went out by the buses were everyone was hanging out. One of Vince's band members was kinda dicussing the situation, all I got that it was over a girl & he thought it was foolish. He also walked away calling himself a whore & there would be no telling who he would play for next year.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

From what I understand it started because of Alan & Rikki had a disagreement over a girl, then it escalated to an all out brawl in front of the bus (between the POISON tour bus, and a big ass Yellow rental truck) I heard that it was Big Frank who got whacked but I don't know for sure.....after we did meet & greet with bret we were headed out when all the comotion was starting.. Even though the thing with alan (avos) and Rikki had allready happenend...

Alan is Vince Neil's bass player, by the way. So it does appear that Poison and Vince got it on. So Alan and Rikki got into a fight, and then Vince took on Bobby and Poison security. Now that would have been good stuff to get on tape!

Word has it that Vince and his band have a few hostilities with Poison and it seems like they're getting them all out before the tour ends! Wonder if Rikki got to use any karate moves at all?

If we hear from Rikki or get any more updates, we'll be sure to spread it around.

Yes, that's why I posted the link to this exact same story above, ya see...

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 11 September 2003 01:55 (twenty-two years ago)

you are dave q and i claim my 50 pounds

Dave M. (rotten03), Thursday, 11 September 2003 02:07 (twenty-two years ago)

NB I'm not actually making any claims that Poison is any sort of musical landmark or something, just that they do kind of put on an entertaining show if you're in the right frame of mind. And "Talk Dirty to Me" is an enjoyable pop-punk song.

sundar subramanian (sundar), Thursday, 11 September 2003 02:11 (twenty-two years ago)

Having just worked on a show involving Poison, I can say they're actually a bunch of decent guys, at least from my experience.

Rather surreal listening to a conversation in which Bret Michaels made some references to Sergio Leone, followed by Rikki Rockett talking about Fellini(!), and CC DeVille talking about Arthur Miller(!!). They're all hanging onto the glam look to some extent, though Bobby Dall looks more like a 40-yr old relief pitcher nowadays...

Their music, blah. though "Talk Dirty To Me" was pretty fantastic live, I'd admit...

ah well, Thursday, 11 September 2003 04:31 (twenty-two years ago)

Rather surreal listening to a conversation in which Bret Michaels made some references to Sergio Leone, followed by Rikki Rockett talking about Fellini(!), and CC DeVille talking about Arthur Miller(!!)

Heroes. Of a sort.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 11 September 2003 05:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Solely for my personal amusement, I will assume that the word "queef" featured heavily in each of those conversations.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 11 September 2003 12:42 (twenty-two years ago)

well...ugh.
I hated 'em 15 years ago, and they didn't exactly redeem themselves. Though C.C. Deville was all right.

Remember all those bitchy, blonde cheerleader from 80s movies who was soo soo pretty and was dating the captain of the football team and always picked on Molly Ringwald? Ever wonder what she looks like now? Take a long hard look at Vince Neil.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 11 September 2003 14:05 (twenty-two years ago)

from the Metal-Sludge "Poison Pussy" article by Donna Anderson:
My message to Poison is this: if a chick fucks ya, be happy you're fucking her. Enjoy it at the time! If she comes to
another show and decides she doesn't want to fuck you anymore but would rather do a gang bang with Skid Row and
their road crew, be happy you got her first and go look for another girl. There are plenty of chicks backstage for
everybody! If that doesn't work out, get a hooker. Works for Vince Neil.

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Thursday, 11 September 2003 14:12 (twenty-two years ago)

Bret is a huge fan of films. Quite informed.

It seems like the fates are conspiring against pop-metal band Poison. Less than two weeks before their Wednesday night concert at the Agridome, they lost their stage, their sound system and several thousand dollars worth of equipment when one of their transport trucks caught fire while travelling through Iowa.
A mere week later, according to Heavy Metal Web site Metal-Sludge.com, opening act Vince Neil (already facing charges of misdemeanour battery after an incident at a Nevada brothel in July) took a swipe at Poison bassist Bobby Dall after a concert in Champaign, Ill. Sources claim the dispute stems from bad blood between Poison drummer Rikki Rockett and Neil bassist Alan Vine over a woman.
Then, less than halfway into their 90-minute set at the Agridome, the lights went out. The middle part of their concert was performed under nothing more than a few spotlights, as their technical crew scrambled to fix the problem.
Finally, as if they didn’t have enough working against them already, they’re Poison, one of the most ridiculous bands of one of the most ridiculous eras of rock music.
But none of that was enough to stop them from pulling out whatever stops they had left Wednesday night. Lead singer Bret Michaels — at 40, not quite the pretty boy of yore, but still presentable — made constant reference to the fact that nothing could stop them from playing in Regina.
During their heyday between 1986 and 1991, I had absolutely no use for Poison, who were referred to as “a triumph of image over substance” by their own producer. So I wasn’t expecting to be won over by their live show, and I wasn’t.
Which is not to say that their concert wasn’t enjoyable or even, maybe, good.
Certainly, the two-thirds-full audience at the Agridome was enjoying itself. Both male and female fans were seen to raise their shirts in ersatz toasts to Poison’s performance.
Michaels returned the praise, saying several times, “You guys really f---ing know how to kick ass!”
Amid scorching displays of pyrotechnics, Michaels, Dall, Rockett and guitarist C.C. DeVille (along with a keyboard player) pranced and preened their way convincingly through Poison’s cheesy catalogue. Songs like “Talk Dirty To Me,” “I Won’t Forget You,” and their cover of the Loggins and Messina hit “Your Mama Don’t Dance” haven’t improved with age. “Unskinny Bop,” the scourge of the 1990 hit parade, still manages to be one of the most offensive examples of why the music-buying public responded so strongly to the relative sincerity of grunge bands by 1992.
As loathsome as I found Poison during my adolescence, and as trite as their songs remain, by the time they played an encore of “Nothin’ But a Good Time,” I had to grudgingly admit to myself that I was having fun. With nothing at stake, and if you only hear them once every 15 years, Poison’s all right with me.
In fact, I really enjoyed C.C. DeVille’s solo performance, just after the lighting rig went out. With his platinum blonde hair teased to the max, DeVille resembled a giant dandelion, half-puffed. Contorting his face to hilarious extremes and shredding righteously on a Flying V guitar, he proved himself worthy of the title Guitar Hero.
Opening act Vince Neil played a 40-minute set, comprised entirely of songs by his old band Motley Crue, though he didn’t mention them by name. Looking pretty much exactly like you’d expect a rock star to look 12 years after his last hit, Neil was energetic and entertaining despite sometimes flubbing or mumbling lines of his classic songs.
Canadian ’80s rockers the Headpins opened the concert.

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Friday, 12 September 2003 13:48 (twenty-two years ago)

See, that's what I was talking about. They put on such a fun show that even a total hater could enjoy it.

sundar subramanian (sundar), Saturday, 13 September 2003 17:19 (twenty-two years ago)

thirteen years pass...

I got "I Want Action" stuck in my head the other day and was wondering if they still sing "If I can't have her/I'll take her and make her" when they perform it live.

They sure do.

Ha, I saw that show in 03. Skid Row with someone other than Sebastian Bach was in between them. Vince Neil was easily the 'best' of the three.
