putting my ned raggett trust on the line w/actual unrelated but essential question

okay, so i finally broke down tonight and paid out the ass for d.i. go pop because i trust ned's taste so much and got to the point that i HAVE to hear this record. i also bought the kitchens of distinction record he has at circa #20 on his biblically famous top 136.

actual question: how incredibly annoying is it that any time someone asks a question here, there's this contingent of respondents on this board who immediately delve in to the archives to find where it or something similar to it has already been asked so that they can be the first to (if they're remotely polite) provide the link to it or else shut the thread down by responding that it's already been covered before*? it's like those assholes at golf tournaments (okay they're all pretty much assholes) who compete with each other to be the first asshole to yell "you da man" as soon as tiger woods strikes the ball.

*mega asshole bonus points to the person who finds the thread where someone already bitched about this.

It's better to have everything about one topic on one thread. You can still post on an old thread that someone links you to.

oops (Oops), Saturday, 13 September 2003 07:01 (twenty-one years ago)

OK look, as someone who has often posted links to earlier threads, the motivation basically boils down to this:

#1. The assumption here is that - when a POSTER goes to the trouble of starting a New Thread - this POSTER want KNOWLEDGE!! When someone links to an earlier thread - what that someone is doing is saying this: HAY, POSTER! HERE be knowledge!!

#2. There are overburdened moderators here who, believe it or not, are trying to maintain some semblance of order to this place. In addition to general moderation duties, my understanding is that they eventually "categorize" threads (i.e. make them accessible to people, so that that one does not have to , uh start a new thread). I gather this is a basically simple, but let's face it - boring task. So when someone just waltzes into ILM and posts a New Question without going through the common courtesy of searching (That "SEARCH" link is VERY prominant at the bottom of EVERY page) for an earlier thread ... well, that is downright insulting.

#3. Graham - and many props to him for doing this - a few months ago added the Tracklink system to the ILX code. This is a wonderful thing. So now, even if some random cockfarmer comes along and starts a "Beatles - CLassic or Dud?" thread, we can link them all up!! So even if cockfarmer's silly Beatles thread inspires an amazing thread - a wondrous thread that brings out all the ILM heavyweights, debating and reassessing the relevance of the beloved fab four - the point is , NOW it is linked up, courtesy of the TRACKLINK system, to OTHER BEatles threads! YAY!

This is an incredibly positive thing DRAKE MCCAIN! Now, thanks to the powerz of the Inter-web, you can find the answers to yr. questions!

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Saturday, 13 September 2003 07:59 (twenty-one years ago)

How does that Tracklink thing work? I mean how can I use it myself (I don't want to know the underlying mechanics or anything)?

David. (Cozen), Saturday, 13 September 2003 08:56 (twenty-one years ago)

Here is an earlier thread--one of many--on the subject.

This is an archived board, which has certain advantages that tend to get lost if people don't bother to search the archives before posting a thread (or at least before posting a thread on a subject which isn't likely to be that unusual). The search function here used to be better (but it was slowing down ILX page loading in general), so it has gotten more difficult to track down earlier threads.

Don't you think it may be a little bit offensive to come to this board relatively new, only to call people assholes for trying to keep down the number of duplicate threads?

Al Andalous (Al Andalous), Saturday, 13 September 2003 12:45 (twenty-one years ago)

It's not meant to say, "This has already been discussed, and there's nothing more to say about it." It's more a matter of: this is what has already been said (so that you don't miss it), and it would be better to continue that discussion rather than asking the same question again.

Al Andalous (Al Andalous), Saturday, 13 September 2003 12:49 (twenty-one years ago)

i like how the first part of the first post has absolutely nothing to do with the second and is merely cover for the asshole part of the question.

gabbo giftington (dubplatestyle), Saturday, 13 September 2003 16:46 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't why diamond and al gave an ans to this fuck awful thread (though its nice of them).

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Saturday, 13 September 2003 18:58 (twenty-one years ago)

Er...so what did you think of the albums?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 13 September 2003 19:27 (twenty-one years ago)

what is this biblically famous top 136 and where can I find it?

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Saturday, 13 September 2003 19:36 (twenty-one years ago)

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Saturday, 13 September 2003 19:47 (twenty-one years ago)

I still get e-mails about it. :-) Four years old and sure I would revise some things and add some others but it's how I felt then and why not?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 13 September 2003 19:49 (twenty-one years ago)

haha, I actually ran into this thing before I was ever on ILX! Deliciously idiosyncratic stuff.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Saturday, 13 September 2003 19:52 (twenty-one years ago)

A very apt description!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 13 September 2003 19:54 (twenty-one years ago)

Ned, if you were to revise it, would you include any rock albums, or albums by black people?

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Saturday, 13 September 2003 19:55 (twenty-one years ago)

Did I miss something?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 13 September 2003 19:59 (twenty-one years ago)

87 and 91 diamond.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Saturday, 13 September 2003 20:01 (twenty-one years ago)

among others. and there are 'rock' recs there.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Saturday, 13 September 2003 20:03 (twenty-one years ago)

103, 132, 15, 26, 128, 107, 82...

In the meantime, if my definition of 'rock' differs from yours, my tears flow unnumbered and my mind doesn't give a flying fuck.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 13 September 2003 20:05 (twenty-one years ago)

Though man, it's clear me and Ned have different tastes. I just dissed Behavior on my site (too being boring, not enough "being boring" -the best songs are on Discography).

Albums on Ned's list that could stance a chance of making it one I made (though to be honest I haven't heard a lot of the albums on it): Loveless, Different Class (Though I'd probably pick that new hits comp), Dummy, Coming Up, Automatic For The People, Southpaw Grammar (I haven't heard Beethoven Was Deaf but Your Arsenal would definitely be high be on mine), Transient Random Noise..., Low End Theory, Crying Your Knife Away (I'm assuming it's like Bee Thousand but live), Portishead and Gentlemen.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Saturday, 13 September 2003 20:10 (twenty-one years ago)

stance a chance

I'm a poet.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Saturday, 13 September 2003 20:10 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh! And Play With Toys! How did I miss that?

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Saturday, 13 September 2003 20:17 (twenty-one years ago)

goddamn, re-reading this list makes me want to hear every album on it. GODDAMNIT. There goes my money.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Saturday, 13 September 2003 20:17 (twenty-one years ago)

ha, Ned I was just teasing - I wasn't trying to pull a trife or anything! Your writing in the blurbs is quite good! Although looking at that list, yeah, my eyes kind of glaze over. A lot of gauzy New Age music I'd rather die than suffer through...

So sure, we differ.

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Saturday, 13 September 2003 20:19 (twenty-one years ago)

Yay gauzy New Age! No worries, then. :-)

The real absence on there for my money looking at it right this second is Rocket From the Crypt (and Drive Like Jehu for that matter). Possibly Notorious BIG as well now that I think about it.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 13 September 2003 20:24 (twenty-one years ago)

First off, all apologies to everyone. I vaguely remember posting this last night but I think my thought process went something like this....

I was looking to blow my paycheck on some new music and remembered ned's top 136 list. I shopped around and found the Disco Inferno and Kitchens of Distinction records and then came here to give my props to Ned. I used to post here with some frequency (at least a year ago) and was remembering why I stopped which had something to do with asking what i had thought was a thought-provoking question and getting shot down by someone telling me that it had been covered before. I guess I was feeling more than a little bitter about it.

So, yeah, I feel like the asshole today. I promise I'm a nice person though.

drake mccain, Saturday, 13 September 2003 20:56 (twenty-one years ago)

Nothing wrong with nice people. :-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 13 September 2003 21:07 (twenty-one years ago)

I bought DI Go Pop when it came out, and it didn't stick. I'll have to drag out the CD again. Thankyou list.

mentalist (mentalist), Monday, 15 September 2003 06:39 (twenty-one years ago)

five years pass...

The real absence on there for my money looking at it right this second is Rocket From the Crypt (and Drive Like Jehu for that matter). Possibly Notorious BIG as well now that I think about it.

What else is absent?

I really want to know and have wondered this many times and can't believe I'm saying this...

I just wish he hadn't adopted the "ilxor" moniker (ilxor), Wednesday, 13 May 2009 03:49 (sixteen years ago)

A lot of stuff, I'm sure. You got me.
