Things played at 45 instead of 33

Just found out that if you play Badlands by Springsteen at 45rpm, it sounds like Katrina and The Waves. Which is a coincidence, since my mate says the two songs that make him want to run on the spot for eternity are by Springsteen and Katrina (Born to Run + Walking on Sunshine).

Any other 45/33 comedy mishaps?

Also, I was pleasantly surpirised by the first Cooper Temple Clause album until I realised it should be much slower and, as such, it was actually regurgitated tripe. Although in genuinely took me a good couple of songs.

A lot of 33s sound like The Smurfs when played on 45. But I guess that's not what you were interested in hearing about, it is? :-)

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Saturday, 4 October 2003 00:14 (twenty-one years ago)

BEST ILM POST EVER: the one where someone said they played "oh yeah" by Yello at 45 and it just sounded like a regular guy saying "oh yeah" !

Sonny A. (Keiko), Saturday, 4 October 2003 00:17 (twenty-one years ago)

My favorite 45 is 'The Who vs. Porky the Pig.' by GBV.

calstars (calstars), Saturday, 4 October 2003 00:26 (twenty-one years ago)

DUD3 I DONT RILLY PLAY TAHT MANY 45S111!1! WTF

calstars (calstars), Saturday, 4 October 2003 00:27 (twenty-one years ago)

This is kind of the opposite, but if you play the 45 of "I Feel Love" at 33, the bass turns into something truly amazing. It really works incredibly well slowed down.

dlp9001, Saturday, 4 October 2003 01:16 (twenty-one years ago)

kanye west to thread.

just picked up Chack Khan's "I Feel For You" that has "Through the Fire" which when sped up to 45 is west's "Through the Wire"

Any other 45/33 comedy mishaps?

The entire genre of new beat?

Xii (Xii), Saturday, 4 October 2003 05:23 (twenty-one years ago)

Those cheap Neu! bastards.

I agree with the 'I Feel Love' sentiment.

Sasha (sgh), Saturday, 4 October 2003 06:27 (twenty-one years ago)

sonny is right (except it was on ile)

ron (ron), Saturday, 4 October 2003 06:36 (twenty-one years ago)

philip glass' 'music in fifths' played on 45 sounds even more mechanistic and turbo generated than it really is.

phil turnbull (philT), Saturday, 4 October 2003 08:13 (twenty-one years ago)

If you play Tones On Tail's "Go!" on 45, you get Techno. This has been done so many times they should get intellectual property royalties for the whole thing...

kate (kate), Saturday, 4 October 2003 11:39 (twenty-one years ago)

Dee Dee King's "Funky Man" 12-inch 33 single sounds like it's being rapped by Cartman at 45. It also becomes listenable when speeded up. Dee Dee is a punk rapper.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Saturday, 4 October 2003 15:49 (twenty-one years ago)

"In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida" by Iron Butterfly turns into a Northern Soul stomper when you play it at 45.

udu wudu (udu wudu), Saturday, 4 October 2003 16:16 (twenty-one years ago)

Angry Samoans' "Inside My Brain" original on 12-inch vinyl. Didn't
realize at first it was mastered at 45 rpm and don't think it was
marked anywhere on the cover or label.

Being LP-sized, I played it first at 33-rpm. Damn, this is one of
the best Black Sabbath ripoff bands I've ever heard.

Then realized mistake. Still sounded good.

George Smith, Sunday, 5 October 2003 23:40 (twenty-one years ago)

on the same note, we were under the impression that the THRONES albums were to be played at 33. and of course they sounded way better slowed down.

vahid (vahid), Sunday, 5 October 2003 23:43 (twenty-one years ago)

Four words: Ravi. Shankar. During. Sex.

Sarah Pedal (call mr. lee), Sunday, 5 October 2003 23:57 (twenty-one years ago)

omd's vclx1 played at 45 sounds like altered images.
alternately, coil's hellraiser themes 10" sounds so much better at 33. probably the reason i only played the cd of it once.

frenchbloke (frenchbloke), Monday, 6 October 2003 05:20 (twenty-one years ago)

Lush on 45 sounds like the Cocteau Twins, just, you know, faster.

Mike Ouderkirk (Mike Ouderkirk), Monday, 6 October 2003 06:50 (twenty-one years ago)

This works best with electronic music, since most people know how human voice and traditional instruments should sound like, and whether or not they're speeded up. Down-tempo trip-hop/dub/blunted beats records sometimes sound as good or even better at 45 than 33. My friend bought the Req LP "Frequency Jams" a couple of years ago and he's still not sure at which speed it should be played.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Monday, 6 October 2003 08:32 (twenty-one years ago)

Bruce's "I'm on Fire" off the LP, played at 45, sounds exactly like Dolly Parton.

I mean EXACTLY.

mark grout (mark grout), Monday, 6 October 2003 08:37 (twenty-one years ago)

Warp always say "If it sounds good it's at the right speed".

*prompting obvious retort from Tuomas*

DJ Mencap (DJ Mencap), Monday, 6 October 2003 08:39 (twenty-one years ago)

Huh?

Tuomas (Tuomas), Monday, 6 October 2003 08:44 (twenty-one years ago)

I used to play DJ Shadow's 'Lost & Found' on 33 when I first got it, and I tell you what, it was pretty good. Really drowsy sounding, like a woozy koala on mogadon. I thought it was perhaps the slo-core hip-hop sound I'd been waiting for for ages. It was quite a shock to my metabolism when I heard it again on the Headz comp at the right speed, and its never quite held the same appeal since.

NickB (NickB), Monday, 6 October 2003 09:10 (twenty-one years ago)

"Huh?"

Well, something about it sounding rubbish at either speed, obviously...

DJ Mencap (DJ Mencap), Monday, 6 October 2003 09:22 (twenty-one years ago)

Back in the Big Beat days, Danish duo E.T.A. acdtually got a pretty big hit with 'Casual Sub', solely beacuse Fatboy Slim played the 12" at 33 by mistake (it was a white label). I talked to them shortly after, and they were truly amazed that it could even be played at 33! It was their only hit ever, and it became so by mistake. Must be a pretty ambivalent feeling, eh?

Jay Kid (Jay K), Monday, 6 October 2003 09:24 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't hate all Warp material, read "The Best Warp Records" thread for proof.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Monday, 6 October 2003 09:36 (twenty-one years ago)

(sorry, i've mentioned this before, but)

a great vinyl art thingey is the b-side to "O Superman", a song called "Walk the Dog" (a great shaggy multi-media display with satirical designs on Dolly Parton)
it seems too fast at 45rpm, too slow at 33 1/3, and deliberately does not list the correct speed on the label.

(the song itself is a very multi-speed affair anyway)

george gosset (gegoss), Monday, 6 October 2003 09:43 (twenty-one years ago)

I used to play DJ Shadow's 'Lost & Found' on 33 when I first got it

Ha! I did this too! And if I still had it on vinyl, I'd continue to do so...

A cursory mention for Utah Saints, the b-side of whose "Something Good" single is specifically recorded to work equally well on 33 or 45. Damn fine stuff.

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Monday, 6 October 2003 09:49 (twenty-one years ago)

God, I'd forgotten about E.T.A. They were a proper mental hardcore crew, weren't they? Casual Sub was good as well (when I was 16, anyway).

Re: Angry Samoans: I did the same thing when I got Feeding of The 5000 by Crass. Except I thought it was shit.

DJ Mencap (DJ Mencap), Monday, 6 October 2003 10:18 (twenty-one years ago)

On the Warp wrong speed thing - downloaded "Freak" by LFO recently - it'd been recorded/mp3'd off vinyl at 33, and I thought it was this slow-ish sleazy number. Felt like I should buy it, got the CD version and got this nutter-quick turbo-electro thing instead - prefer it at 33rpm to be honest.

steve w, Monday, 6 October 2003 11:30 (twenty-one years ago)

Anyone heard LFO's "Slow Down Speedy"?

Tuomas (Tuomas), Monday, 6 October 2003 11:57 (twenty-one years ago)

"Bruce's "I'm on Fire" off the LP, played at 45, sounds exactly like Dolly Parton."

Totally agreed, totally, totally agreed - the guitars and instrumental bits don't sound speeded up at all, and the voice only sounds a tiny weeny bit weird.

Except it's called Streets of Fire.

Also totally, totally agree about Walk the Dog. Is there a 'proper' way to play it?

Jim Robinson (Original Miscreant), Monday, 6 October 2003 18:02 (twenty-one years ago)

Neurosis' "Enemy of the Sun" scared the shit out of me when accidentally played at 45

Ben Dot (1977), Monday, 6 October 2003 22:40 (twenty-one years ago)

Whodini - "Friends" on 45, mixed into house
Shy FX - "Chopper" on 33, mixed into hip hop...

Jacob (Jacob), Tuesday, 7 October 2003 05:15 (twenty-one years ago)

For a long time I listened to the UNKLE mix of Tortoise at 33 instead of 45 (I didn't reealise it was the wrong speed until I heard it on CD years later). Of course, in those days, I smoked pot.

It would be great to have an iTunes plug-in that pitchshifted tracks to play as if they were 33s at 45, or 45s at 33.
