old punk and postpunk bands playing now - S &D

I just saw Alternative TV last night in Brooklyn - nice, funny fellas, but the music was definitely underwhelming. On the other hand, I've heard that the Mission of Burma shows last year (I was too sick to go) were tremendous.

Are there other bands in this (admittedly really vague) category who folks can recommend seeing?

Hurlothrumbo (hurlothrumbo), Friday, 24 October 2003 13:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Also sort of inspired by the Mekons thread. I'll always go see the Mekons, hotshit drunkard champions indeed.

Hurlothrumbo (hurlothrumbo), Friday, 24 October 2003 13:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Metal Urbain are touring America in late October-early November. TV Smith is/was also touring...would really like to see Bogshed, or Ut
get together and play.

Stephen Boyle (SBoyle), Friday, 24 October 2003 14:43 (twenty-two years ago)

yes, definitely the mekons! also wire and the soft boys.

lauren (laurenp), Friday, 24 October 2003 14:46 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah, I heard both good and bad things about the recent Wire shows. I'm not crazy about seeing stuff at Irving Plaza or wherever, though. The Alternative TV show was at this place way the fuck out in Red Hook, called "The Hook". There was like nobody there at all (maybe CMJ + no public transportation = a tough sell?). Nice space to see a band, actually, but lord do you ever need a car...

Hurlothrumbo (hurlothrumbo), Friday, 24 October 2003 14:52 (twenty-two years ago)

oh, and the ex. can't believe i forgot them!

lauren (laurenp), Friday, 24 October 2003 14:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Queensryche is on tour. Yes.

Spinktor the Unmerciful (mawill5), Friday, 24 October 2003 14:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, the Ex at the Knit was a mighty fine show. Those folks are inspiring -- they're just making their music, putting out whatever's in their heads. I admire the hell out of them (and actually like their music -- what a combo...).

Hurlothrumbo (hurlothrumbo), Friday, 24 October 2003 15:04 (twenty-two years ago)

Wire, definitely. Well, definitely if you like the sound of the newer stuff. The Mission of Burma shows were simply incredible. Does the Clean count? They're always fun.

Did anybody see Television recently?

When are the Feelies gonna do a gig?

scott m (mcd), Friday, 24 October 2003 15:18 (twenty-two years ago)

I saw Television, Varlaine fucked up 'marquee moon'...it was funny.

Spinktor the Unmerciful (mawill5), Friday, 24 October 2003 15:19 (twenty-two years ago)

my friends are going to see the stooges at ATP. i'm not convinced (actually the title of this thread seems to be the mission statement for the los angeles ATP).

vahid (vahid), Friday, 24 October 2003 15:21 (twenty-two years ago)

I would fucking love to see the feelies. stooges, I'm with you, vahid -- I just don't think it could be all that in such an environment. I know Iggy's a "force of nature" as all the lazy reviewers like to say, but stooges music in a festival setting seems like I'd probably be bummed out.

Hurlothrumbo (hurlothrumbo), Friday, 24 October 2003 15:28 (twenty-two years ago)

My Stooges experience last August with several thousand others was as good as I hoped....and my expectations were high given the price of the tickets! Its the first time I've seen a show that big since ~1979.
Hell yeah to the Mekons live (anytime)!!!, and I thought that the last Wire tour was the best I've seen (although I didn't see them circa 1979).

peepee (peepee), Friday, 24 October 2003 15:40 (twenty-two years ago)

i saw the stooges at coachella a few months back. it was so-so. i am too young to compare it to early stooges shows, but i am sure that the coachella performance *HAS* to pale in comparison. it was cute to see the white stripes kids getting into it, but a giant stage surrounded by guards and photographers is about as stale as it gets. they played the songs well and with passion and it was nice to see mike watt ... but all in all, fairly blah. it happens. i will be at the atp redux and i can't imagine it will be all that more impressive. we'll see.

Dean Gulberry (deangulberry), Friday, 24 October 2003 16:04 (twenty-two years ago)

Buzzcocks. Saw them a few months ago, holy shit, they tore up the place. They just blasted out the classics with barely a pause between 'em..."Orgasm Addict," "I Believe," "Boredom"...just amazing. I was smiling, screaming, jumping around, and utterly happy. The new album on Merge is worth checking out, too.

I missed Wire when they were touring, but the live disc (bonus CD with _Send_ from pinkflag.com) sounds pretty good (though, inexplicably, the live drums sound more artificial than they do on the studio stuff).

Ernest P. (ernestp), Friday, 24 October 2003 16:43 (twenty-two years ago)

The Descendents
The Fall
The Clean

all seen recently and all were excellent.

gygax! (gygax!), Friday, 24 October 2003 17:13 (twenty-two years ago)

Shit -- a good Fall show? Where/when did you see them? That makes me happy and (guardedly) optimistic...

Hurlothrumbo (hurlothrumbo), Friday, 24 October 2003 17:19 (twenty-two years ago)

San Francisco - You Are You Missing Weiner tour although I thought it was Detroit ca. 1972.... "I never thought it would come to this".... *bottle whizzes by microphone*

gygax! (gygax!), Friday, 24 October 2003 17:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Good band, or just good MES? I mean, that's always good enough, I'm just curious.

Hurlothrumbo (hurlothrumbo), Friday, 24 October 2003 17:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh no, Buzzcocks aren't terrible and embarrassing? They were playing near me in a small venue for like £10 but I thought it'd just ruin them for me.

If you can call Dexy's post-punk, they were pretty damn shit-hot last night. New Order were also great at Finsbury last year. The Bunnymen supporting them were OK but y'know, fuck them.

I've heard good things about the Chameleons' recent stuff but know little about it.

Ferg (Ferg), Friday, 24 October 2003 17:24 (twenty-two years ago)

I saw the Fall in June - Great show.. great setlist.. played a decent length for the Fall.

Not postpunk - but old rock indie - 11th Dream Day - 1 show at the double door in November.

dave225 (Dave225), Friday, 24 October 2003 17:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Good band, or just good MES?

This version was a more expanded "classic" line up (female keys, guitarS) than on the unutterable tour (tight 3 piece band of athlete-looking kids, really metallic sounding).

gygax! (gygax!), Friday, 24 October 2003 17:31 (twenty-two years ago)

Killing Joke at Webster Hall 10/22/03

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 24 October 2003 19:55 (twenty-two years ago)

I think I read somewhere that Baird Figi is playing that EDD show. Gosh, I would love to go. I think it's over Thanksgiving weekend, though. Plus, I'm in NJ.

scott m (mcd), Friday, 24 October 2003 20:13 (twenty-two years ago)

I saw a bunch of older bands this year:
Last night Killing Joke were awesome, even though Jaz was vomiting (I think he has a stomach flu or something) 15 song set, nailed it, loud as god. Really good new record.
The Ex were totally amazing, fun, bouncy, relevant. Excelent new record. I saw them twice.
The Damned played a really nice show, they had a night off from that horrible Misfit's ripoff tour and the Captain mocked the feinds big time. Their last album had some good songs on it.
The Sex Pistols were...well, the Sex Pistols. They rocked out a lot more then you would expect for a bunch of pasty old English guys with guts. Thanks for not releasing a new record.

Brandon Welch (Brandon Welch), Saturday, 25 October 2003 13:31 (twenty-two years ago)

I've heard good things about the Chameleons' recent stuff but know little about it.

They're doing great, even if they alas appear to have fallen apart again.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 25 October 2003 13:36 (twenty-two years ago)

Mission of Burma = top of the pile. I will also go to see the reunited Wire any time, partly because I adore them for not being an oldies act (NO pre-02 material until the encore!), partly because the new stuff rocks. And the Clean, dear God what a great band--I think they're probably actually playing better now than they did 20+ years ago.

Was slightly let down by the Soft Boys reunion show I saw. Alternative TV was fun a couple of years ago, but I don't know that I'd go out of my way to see them again.

I actually once saw Bow Wow Wow tear the fucking roof off. Maybe I was just in a really good mood that day.

Douglas (Douglas), Saturday, 25 October 2003 22:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Rocket from the Tombs!

hstencil, Sunday, 26 October 2003 19:30 (twenty-two years ago)

That I've see in the last 12 months....

Search: Buzzccocks, The Damned, Penetration, TV Smith (ex Adverts), UK Subs, Vibrators

Approach With Caution, may not be entirely what you're expecting from a "punk" band: Alternative TV, Ari Up's The Slits

Destroy: Chelsea, Dead Kennedys

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Sunday, 26 October 2003 21:24 (twenty-two years ago)

Last time I saw the Real Kids they still sounded dreeeeeemeeee...

Ann Sterzinger (Ann Sterzinger), Monday, 27 October 2003 01:57 (twenty-two years ago)

the urinals sounded great last night. very well-rehearsed and john's voice is better than ever. they're trying to get out to chicago and new york--miss them at your peril.

human hands opened up with a ton of new songs, and were ridiculously good. two thirds of the way through dennis duck made way for keith mitchell and they became the romans, doing three songs from "last days at the ranch" and a surf song. so good.

dan (dan), Monday, 27 October 2003 18:59 (twenty-two years ago)

Very impressed with Killing Joke a couple of weeks ago, especially when Jaz Coleman yelled at some poor sap for not sharing water around equally.

Wire have been pretty ripping both times I've seen them. Ditto Mission of Burma.

I really enjoyed the DKs last year but had to drink myself to death to achieve a state where I felt comfortable doing so.

Gygax - how recently did you see the Descendents? I didn't realise they were playing, like, now. I'm in da UK anyways so it's prolly much of a muchness but...

DJ Mencap (DJ Mencap), Tuesday, 28 October 2003 10:23 (twenty-two years ago)

they played a secret show in los angeles testing out the new material for an EP and LP coming out early next year. i would imagine they will be touring possibly making it to the UK.

gygax! (gygax!), Tuesday, 28 October 2003 17:11 (twenty-two years ago)

X were abssolutely fantastic this summer.

Colin Meeder (Mert), Tuesday, 28 October 2003 18:11 (twenty-two years ago)

The Buzzcocks and the Clean were slightly less great than Mission of Burma, X, and The Suburbs, who were some of the best shows I saw this past year, period. I hear the Australian X is back together. And yeah, I gotta see Rocket From the Tombs and Killing Joke. Also search: Mighty Mofos in Minneapolis, oldest punk band in town, from '78.

he's on the job already. ;-)

when the urinals first got back together when amrep released a comp of their stuff, they were still right on.

however, the new (and actually first) album that just came out is pretty awful.

jack cole (jackcole), Tuesday, 4 November 2003 00:36 (twenty-two years ago)

Pere Ubu

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Tuesday, 4 November 2003 00:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, I've been wondering about that new Urinals thing.
