It is quite a magnificent album. "Cold Cold Water" is incredible.

Fun facts about Mirah:

*she will soon be releasing an album of political songs, old and new, recorded with the Black Cat Orchestra. It features Spanish and Italian anti-fascist songs, and works by Kurt Weill, Leonard Cohen, Stephen Foster, and Mirah. Exciting!

*her mom painted the CD cover for Advisory Committee.

*when she was 12 she was on Double Dare on nickelodeon and used her prize money to participate in the Great Peace March for Nuclear Disarmament!

Mirah: s/d?
Mirah: Classic or Dud

For those who realize we have a search link at the bottom of each page.

Yeah, "Cold Cold Water" is great. Phil Elvrum production + confident lead singer = awwwwesome. I think her best work has yet to come, too.

I've had Mirah recommended to me by a few people, and I was told "people who like Shannon Wright like Mirah" but I have to say I don't really like Mirah. I feel like I should, but I can't. It's hard to actively dislike, but the music doesn't stick with me at all. Maybe it's her voice, I'm not sure.

"cold cold water" isn't bad, but it still doesn't do a whole lot for me in the final analysis, i.e. not good enough to make me reconsider anything else I've ever heard by her. Maybe I'm getting more finicky in my old age.

I really like "You Think It's Like This, But Really It's Like This" too. "Million Miles" and "Sweepstakes Prize" are really pretty songs. Has anyone heard that "Misty Black Mountain Band" album or whatever that K put out that's Mirah with a couple other K artists singing more rootsy stuff? I'm curious about that one.

Mirah Yom Tov Zeitlyn, Ginger Brooks Takahashi & Friends.
The Black Mountain Music Project.
This is more of an experience documented than a proper album. Mirah and Ginger were living in a cabin for a month and they made some songs together, sometimes with friends. very intimate and low-key there are a lot of little sketches of things and brief instrumentals. Production is relatively simple, but this suits the simplicity of these songs well. There is at least one song "while we have the sun" that ranks among Mirah's best. There's a nice one that Mirah's sister sings too, called "Pure".

It's not earth-shattering but it's definitely worth owning, and proceeds go to the Rock & Roll Camp for Girls and an Organic Garden project.

wow, this is bizarre. i stumbled across my copy of advisory committee friday night and have spent a good portion of my weekend repeatedly listening to it (partly because i love it and partly because i was too lazy to switch CD's). and suddenly Pfork's talking about her and now there's this thread. GET OUT OF MY HEAD YOU GNOMES!!

Felcher (Felcher), Monday, 27 October 2003 20:04 (twenty-two years ago)

She's got a fantastic voice and she is deft lyricist and lovely melodies and Phil Elvrum is classic.

Leee (Leee), Monday, 27 October 2003 22:16 (twenty-two years ago)

Mt St Helens and Monument are also incredible, in addition to CCW.

"people who like Shannon Wright like Mirah"

This is true! I am example!

Finally, her song on the Ragazza Pop compilation, "Don't," is my favorite thing of the year.

Leee (Leee), Monday, 27 October 2003 22:19 (twenty-two years ago)

Leee, what's the rest of that compilation like?

Also, I want to say that people generally give Phil Elvrum too much of the credit for Mirah's albums. He's a brilliant producer and a very sweet guy, and his contributions are impressive, but Mirah co-produced all the songs that Phil worked on, and did half of the record herself, without his assistance.

'advisory committee' is excellent, as is 'you think it's like this...' and even for an improv/"not proper record", i like 'the black mountain project' as well. it's only 30 minutes, and there are quite a few snippets of incidental sound, but it works, i think. and the second last track on it, "oh september!", has to be one of the best cheer-me-up tracks of the year.
any word on what she is doing next?

robot snare, Tuesday, 28 October 2003 23:34 (twenty-two years ago)

I've only given Ragazza Pop one listen aside from "Don't" -- and while the rest is pretty nice, it's still got nothing on Mirah's song, which is worth the whole album though.

Leee (Leee), Wednesday, 29 October 2003 03:33 (twenty-two years ago)

fourteen years pass...

so how was that last mirah album then?

synonym toast crunch (Ross), Saturday, 2 June 2018 04:20 (seven years ago)

From 2014? Very nice! I like it a lot.

However I still prefer the more distinct, post-Microphones sound palette of her earlier stuff. More surprises, more intimate, more texture, more dynamic etc.

Evan, Saturday, 2 June 2018 05:17 (seven years ago)

with you there bud

cold, cold water is one of the finest songs ever

just epic levels of spaghetti western grunge

i liked that one with the beach on the cover as well

oh damn man, there's a newish ep from 2017!!!

synonym toast crunch (Ross), Saturday, 2 June 2018 06:21 (seven years ago)

C'mon Miracle is her best album! Though nothing else* in her discog quite has the majestic sweep of "Cold, Cold Water" though.

* I haven't really listened to anything from (a)spera on though.
