Stop Smoking That Shit

Also, why do people go on about how cool that Pollard guy is for drinking a lot of beer? Is it because the schmindie world can only apparently stomach tea, froufrou mixed drinks, and the occasional "ironic" PBR?

New utterly confused answers.

This post from the GBV thread succeeded in tick-a-ling me. I want to complain about cigarettes in supposedly hella cool and intelligent music. Actually, let's talk about cigarettes as an enduring accessory of coolness in high art altogether. First off I started smoking in grade 9 to look hard and shit but now have reached the point where I'm so ashamed of the habit that I'll only smoke outdoors and when it rains I'll get so paranoid about the stink clinging to my fingers and making my forehead greasy I'll spend 10 mins airing out and washing hands if I know I'll be encountering pretty chicas that don't smoke (and there are TONS). So why do so many artistes insist on keeping smoking a part of their public image? Interpol smoking in their press shots like it'll make em look less pussy somehow. Countless authors smoking cigarettes on Charlie Rose like it'll shroud them in enigma and anomie when it just looks like boring men butching up. I mean I try to look up to these artists cos supposedly they have interesting, creative approaches to the universe, but what gives with this high-school impress-me shit. I'll have to repurpose geeta's theory and just assume that non-mainstream music and the literary elite are two circles with such naturally bitchmade images they feel the need to be so irresponsible in public. Yeah I want my kids to know that their new underground hero mr. modular critical theory freedesign fag thinks they should question the status quo, reevaluate their peers, find their own secret misshapen yet beautiful blisses apart from the fold, but smoking is totally dope. Oh man I want to shit on that shit.

Oh man I want to shit on that shit.

And I want to shit... ON YOU.

my "theory"? there wasn't a theory!

geeta (geeta), Wednesday, 5 November 2003 09:17 (twenty-one years ago)

SOrry geeta my bad. Dave sorry if i have angered you but tell me why papi.

DarrensCoq, Wednesday, 5 November 2003 09:21 (twenty-one years ago)

maybe they're addicted. but then i wouldn't *necessarily* pose with a fag in a press shot

the surface noise (electricsound), Wednesday, 5 November 2003 09:30 (twenty-one years ago)

Yes Jim but I've been addicted for years and it's become increasingly obvious to me its not a cool thing to do so why make a point of doing it the exact moment youre being interviewed or photographed? Unless artists are going for "caught in the everyday act" thing, like their equiv. of the models dressing casual for the "oh dahling i just roll out of bed looking this fabulous" look. I'm not saying I don't LIKE people who do this but I think it's wack.

DarrensCoq, Wednesday, 5 November 2003 09:36 (twenty-one years ago)

but it *is* the cool thing to do! i love smoking, and i wish everyone would do it so that i could go back to smoking on airplanes and in day care centres.

Dave M. (rotten03), Wednesday, 5 November 2003 09:51 (twenty-one years ago)

Haha, word. I'm actually thinking about organizing a hooping party in the near future. Anyone in the Vancouver area that is down, hit me up. Seriously.

DarrensCoq, Wednesday, 5 November 2003 09:56 (twenty-one years ago)

i gave up (again) yesterday. expect me to be posing with fag in approx 2 months time

the surface noise (electricsound), Wednesday, 5 November 2003 10:03 (twenty-one years ago)

Hey mr. noise and all concerned, have you ever dated a smoker and in one brilliant inspired moment suggested that you "quit together"? "on monday?" I love how you totally end up starting to break up right after that.

Darrenscoq, Wednesday, 5 November 2003 11:22 (twenty-one years ago)

Cmon! Someone hoop with me this weekend. I gots an automobile, a box of my dad's medical examination gloves, VIP plus six at Rowing Club, at least two certifiably batshit sluts ready to hoop with us (one of them has a pad in Yaletown and a Jeep Liberty courtesy of daddy). Also my mom taught me how to make this great cold soba dish and she gave me the sauce in this ingenious paper-mache container which SHE learned to make last week. I'm prepared to introduce my internet friends to all of this wondrousness if they would stop being all Salt Lake City and just EMAIL me!!! Hint hint DERRICK!

DarrensCoq=a piss-poor Ramosi

MichaelB, Wednesday, 5 November 2003 13:47 (twenty-one years ago)

Darren, you're OTM with this. There is nothing countercultural about handing over a massive chunk of one's hard-earned wages to Phillip Morris or Anheuser Busch.

Anyone else read Thomas Frank's "The Conquest of Cool" or "Commodify your Dissent"? I think this plays into his arguments quite well.

dear snoop dogg,

thanks for teaching me about marijuana. now i have half the brain cells i did when i was eighteen and i'll never get my harvard phd.

love,

That's pretty funny.

My wife and I have done the "quit together on Monday" thing more than once. Doesn't make for a very good week.

This reminds me of Keith Richards, and obv. with him. it goes much further than smoking (though i recall seeing a XXXX brand 25s product exposure on the desk in a photo of Mick and Keith mixing Exile on Mainstreet).
Lets just note that he promoted some bourbon as some sort of [life one step back from the edge] thing. And that i'm sick of all the "legendary" spew in the media still, films, tv docos and special Mojo treatment, all about "the good old days".

What a bummer sticker. And this guy's Mr. Rock'n'Roll ? He didn't give a fuck what anyone thought then, so why should he now ? he probably kids himself that he still doesn't. and he's always kidding us one way or another, ain't he cool. did he care about the kids at all or just give them a new idea ? and would he give a damn about anyone else's kids ?

*slurp, slurpslurp* = The sound of some fun being sucked out of rock n' roll...

i got your back on this one darren.

Felcher (Felcher), Wednesday, 5 November 2003 20:48 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm always disappointed when I find that someone I admire happens to smoke.

Blood and sparkles (bloodandsparkles), Wednesday, 5 November 2003 22:22 (twenty-one years ago)

I think I missed the pre-balls-out incubation period for ILX: if people knew me they'd stopped getting ticked off at stuff that isn't serious. I'm not trying to "suck the fun" out of rock and roll, Jay, I just think that since it's generally considered a lesser vice, geeks don't question it, and I'm def. not saying rock and roll is a BAD INFLUENCE re: smoking: I'll probably the biggest danger to my kids in that area (but I'd rather bitch about famous people).

DarrensCoq, Wednesday, 5 November 2003 22:26 (twenty-one years ago)

And one of the reasons I bring this topic up is cos sometimes, even though I shouldn't, I rationalize not quitting by saying that so-and-so beatifully haggard vagabond artist guy still smokes and gets by, and hell, I've quit pills and powders, so I "deserve" this one last vice. When honestly it's too expensive.

DarrensCoq, Wednesday, 5 November 2003 22:30 (twenty-one years ago)

Shut your mouth you stupid death sucker.

the persistent smoking=cool equation puzzles me as well. the weird thing about it is that most of the smokers i know can't even recall much about how/why they started, what was going through their head the first time they lit up. it's like it just happened, like puberty (and usually right around the same time, too). so if they think they're cooler than me because my balls haven't dropped yet, let 'em, I guess.
