Anyone care about these guys now? (or ever) Well they're splitting up.
http://www.nme.com/news/106668.htm

Iain Bruce, Thursday, 6 November 2003 14:09 (twenty-one years ago)

They were still together?

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 6 November 2003 14:11 (twenty-one years ago)

Fie!

Citizen Kate (kate), Thursday, 6 November 2003 14:13 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh that's sad -- 9 years after the fact.

Enrique (Enrique), Thursday, 6 November 2003 14:15 (twenty-one years ago)

The band have issued a statement, that reads: "Suede would like to announce that from next year they will be working on their own individual projects. There will not be a new studio album until the band feel that the moment is artistically right to make one. This announcement does not affect the forthcoming touring commitments. Suede would like to thank the fans for their wonderful support over the years. See you in the next life."

Not exactly the same as splitting up for sure though, is it?

(god i'd forgotten how bad nme's site is!!)

Pashmina (Pashmina), Thursday, 6 November 2003 14:15 (twenty-one years ago)

ABT FRIGGIN' TIME!

Jay Kid (Jay K), Thursday, 6 November 2003 14:16 (twenty-one years ago)

The best time to call it a day would have been after "Head Music" (which was good, but the beginning of a slide). It's best not to drag it much longer.

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Thursday, 6 November 2003 14:18 (twenty-one years ago)

The weird thing was, around the release of Head Music, they were staking a claim to be the biggest band in Britain. And now... well.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Thursday, 6 November 2003 14:20 (twenty-one years ago)

i hoped the top 11 success of "Attitude" would signal the re-birth of suede!

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Thursday, 6 November 2003 14:22 (twenty-one years ago)

Alas the Top 31 success of their Singles compilation has put paid to such foolish notions.

Marcello Carlin, Thursday, 6 November 2003 14:24 (twenty-one years ago)

Am I the only Suede fan in the world that didn't loathe Head Music?

Citizen Kate (kate), Thursday, 6 November 2003 14:24 (twenty-one years ago)

What that statement means is "Yes, we are going to reform in 2020 for some horrible Britpop arena package tour along with Catatonia, Heavy Stereo and Gene"

Lynskey (Lynskey), Thursday, 6 November 2003 14:25 (twenty-one years ago)

Alternating with Menswear, Powder and Octopus.

Marcello Carlin, Thursday, 6 November 2003 14:26 (twenty-one years ago)

No, no, no, no, no- please don't even joke about such a thing.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Thursday, 6 November 2003 14:27 (twenty-one years ago)

David Van Day's Electrasy.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Thursday, 6 November 2003 14:27 (twenty-one years ago)

"The Monthlies, a loving tribute to The Weekenders"

DJ Mencap (DJ Mencap), Thursday, 6 November 2003 14:31 (twenty-one years ago)

"C86 20th Anniversary: The Event" with the Razorcuts, Meat Whiplash, Motorcycle Boy and Primal Scream. Special appearance by Tracy Tracy.

Marcello Carlin, Thursday, 6 November 2003 14:36 (twenty-one years ago)

Alas the Top 31 success of their Singles compilation has put paid to such foolish notions.

I fear that might be correct. Hm. I might ask a spy or two.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 6 November 2003 14:37 (twenty-one years ago)

maybe they'll "have a reunion without ever having had a splitting-up experience"

dave q, Thursday, 6 November 2003 14:38 (twenty-one years ago)

Am I the only Suede fan in the world that didn't loathe Head Music?

No, there's me and Mr. Darnielle at least.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 6 November 2003 14:40 (twenty-one years ago)

Or maybe Ben Elton can pen a Suede based musical. Ladies and Gentleman, I give you Martine McCutcheon as Metal Mickey and Darren Day as Dogman in "The Chemistry Between Us".

Lynskey (Lynskey), Thursday, 6 November 2003 14:41 (twenty-one years ago)

Brett's quite fat now, isn't he?

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Thursday, 6 November 2003 14:41 (twenty-one years ago)

Lynskey, for that you must die. Well done.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 6 November 2003 14:41 (twenty-one years ago)

Or maybe Ben Elton can pen a Suede based musical. Ladies and Gentleman, I give you Martine McCutcheon as Metal Mickey and Darren Day as Dogman in "The Chemistry Between Us".

Purrrrrfect

Enrique (Enrique), Thursday, 6 November 2003 14:43 (twenty-one years ago)

Brett's less fat now than he was in the early puppy-fat-and-fringe days!

Like I've said many times, that man rattles me more hormonally than any man his age and former chemical intake has any right to do.

Citizen Kate (kate), Thursday, 6 November 2003 14:44 (twenty-one years ago)

dave q probably otm
shit, brett looks scary on that nme pic
the perfect rock'n'roll career would have been to succeed 'coming up' with fights, booze, drucqs, banging each others girlfriends and a definitive split-up.

Jay Kid (Jay K), Thursday, 6 November 2003 14:46 (twenty-one years ago)

I could see Britpop: The Musical as a possibility. Gareth Gates as Damon Albarn. Kym Marsh as Justine Frischmann. Special guest star Shane Richie as Brett Anderson. Gary and Martin Kemp as Liam and Noel Gallagher. Jarvis Cocker as Himself.

Marcello Carlin, Thursday, 6 November 2003 14:49 (twenty-one years ago)

and marty feldman as richard ashcroft

Jay Kid (Jay K), Thursday, 6 November 2003 14:52 (twenty-one years ago)

Any number of gangly indie preeners from Wigan could play Richard Ashcroft. Take a trip up there, theres still fucking thousands of them.

As regards Bretts tubbyness, all I can say is "Morten Harket balloon with too much air in it".

Lynskey (Lynskey), Thursday, 6 November 2003 14:55 (twenty-one years ago)

BAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!

Jay Kid (Jay K), Thursday, 6 November 2003 14:56 (twenty-one years ago)

maybe they'll "have a reunion without ever having had a splitting-up experience"

LOL

i lost interest after "head music" and the accompanying tour (more accurately: the routinely performance i saw). this is probably the best thing to do. i'll keep on enjoying the debut, "dog man star", "coming up" and "sci-fi lullabies", tho.

willem (willem), Thursday, 6 November 2003 14:58 (twenty-one years ago)

Any number of gangly indie preeners from Wigan could play Richard Ashcroft. Take a trip up there, theres still fucking thousands of them.

Yes, but what ERA Ashcroft? If we're talking early, Storm In Heaven era, well, I might have to visit this place! (Though somehow I doubt it, and I'm getting mental images of Radley-addled sub-Oasis bollocks with parkas galore.)

Citizen Kate (kate), Thursday, 6 November 2003 15:03 (twenty-one years ago)

It's like a walk down the wonderland of Richy A's seismic image changes. Trust me.

Lynskey (Lynskey), Thursday, 6 November 2003 15:12 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't believe you! Someone once told me that Rugby was full of dirty dronerock boys, and alls I saw were lager louts. :-(

Citizen Kate (kate), Thursday, 6 November 2003 15:14 (twenty-one years ago)

I am sad.

the pinefox, Thursday, 6 November 2003 15:34 (twenty-one years ago)

This must be Brett's route back to Bernard. When Bernard was offering to rejoin a year or two ago it was tough, cos although I'm sure Brett was into the idea it would've meant chucking out poor Richard Oakes for no other reason than the fact he's rubbish.

Eyeball Kicks (Eyeball Kicks), Thursday, 6 November 2003 16:36 (twenty-one years ago)

see now i thought something like that...but they did ask him to do the ICA with them and he said 'no'.

i guess their last ever uk gig at the
astoria on december 13th will be something of an emotional one.

this wasn't just any rock band. in my mind they had f-ck all to do with britpop. i'm sure in ned's and all the other hardcore fans' minds too britpop really has nothing to do with it.

it's weird how, on all the fansites and stuff, the hardcore seemed to have jumped on around the *post* butler era; 'coming up' essentially.

what gets forgotten, dunno how but it does, is that they were
f-cking *massive* for a year. they had the biggest selling debut since frankie, they won the mercury, they had more front covers than any band ever etc etc.

they were really the first band i ever went absolutely crackers over. possibly even the last.

piscesboy, Thursday, 6 November 2003 18:11 (twenty-one years ago)

I heard Suede for the first time in ages at a club that the Vicar dragged we along to a couple of weekends ago. They really are (not split yet, right?) quite good, possibly.

Lara (Lara), Thursday, 6 November 2003 18:26 (twenty-one years ago)

She's in Fashion was my last guilty Suede pleasure.

Chuck Tatum (Chuck Tatum), Thursday, 6 November 2003 18:43 (twenty-one years ago)

Why guilty?

Lara (Lara), Thursday, 6 November 2003 18:46 (twenty-one years ago)

I bought it 'cos there was Neil Tennant singing Saturday Night on the b-side. But aren't Suede, post-DMG, the definition of a guilty pleasure?

Chuck Tatum (Chuck Tatum), Thursday, 6 November 2003 19:03 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't believe in guilt.

Lara (Lara), Thursday, 6 November 2003 19:04 (twenty-one years ago)

That's, uh, the initials for Dog Man Gar

Chuck Tatum (Chuck Tatum), Thursday, 6 November 2003 19:05 (twenty-one years ago)

I didn't comment for fear of being spurned for not knowing something.

Lara (Lara), Thursday, 6 November 2003 19:08 (twenty-one years ago)

Anyway, some more info:

SUEDE SPLIT STILL
We have the reasons behind break-up
06 Nov 2003

PlayLouder has just spoken to David Barnett, Suede Biographer, long time
associate of the band, and fan club organiser, who has told us exclusively the
reasons behind the split.

Barnett's book 'Suede: Love & Poison' is out in the shops now, and the launch
is actually taking place tonight - which puts a bit of a downer on things.

PlayLouder was under the illusion the band were working on new material and
had half a new album done. Has this material been shelved then?

DB: There were a few tracks demoed, but to my knowledge only three or four. Of
those, at least one - the almost legendary "Music Like Sex" - was an absolute
corker. I suspect these tracks will surface in one form or another eventually.
It would be a terrible waste if they remained unheard.

Who's idea was it to break up the band? Was it down to Brett or was it a
mutual decision?

DB: The possibility of a split has obviously been in the air for some time
now. The band had a long meeting yesterday and I believe it was Brett who
ultimately made the decision after discussions with the others. I think he
just felt it was time to move on and do something new.

Do you see the band reforming in the future?

DB: I'd like to think so but I'd imagine it wouldn't be for a long time.

Brett has expressed a wish to work with Bernard again. Could this be possible
now?

DB: You'd have to ask them.

Is the split due recent poor sales?

That definitely had an impact. I think the band were all very excited after
the relative critical and commercial success of 'Attitude', which was their
biggest hit for about 5 years. So for the Greatest Hits to go in at 31 must
have been a bit gutting.

Are the band on good terms or do they all hate each other?

DB: It's probably true to say that emotions have been running high lately, but
nobody wants to kill anybody else.

Will the Astoria gig be the last gig and can I come please?

DB: Apart from some hypothetical future reunion, Yes. and Yes.

Are you going to get right royally pissed tonight?

DB: Too fucking right.

Will this effect your book at all?

DB: Hopefully it will result in a huge sales increase.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 6 November 2003 19:34 (twenty-one years ago)

I've kind of been expecting them to break up for some time now, but this is still kind of a downer.

Nicolars (Nicole), Thursday, 6 November 2003 20:26 (twenty-one years ago)

Did I grow out of Suede, or did they just suck more?

Chuck Tatum (Chuck Tatum), Thursday, 6 November 2003 20:30 (twenty-one years ago)

When I met Charlie, Ben and David at the band's office, I will say that there seemed to be a slightly...not a tense atmosphere, really, more an understated one. But Ben signed me up for another year of the fanclub and they didn't say anything like 'wait and see,' and I know they were pondering tour plans for the next year. I think David's note about how the singles album did is telling in that regard, since that news didn't come through for another couple of weeks.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 6 November 2003 20:32 (twenty-one years ago)

Suck? Wash yer mouth out, son! Admittedly, some of their songs made me scratch my head: Did the world really need She's in Fashion? Live, they consistently kicked ass: saw them twice in London last year in the same number of months (and that's rare enough for me).

However, I'm tempted to mourn a bit (as others will know).

(x post)

Nichole Graham (Nichole Graham), Thursday, 6 November 2003 20:37 (twenty-one years ago)

@d@m has some interesting stories about bernard... hmm.

Chuck Tatum (Chuck Tatum), Thursday, 6 November 2003 21:12 (twenty-one years ago)

And for some reason I own Bernard Butler's video of The Smiths Live at Brixton.

Chuck Tatum (Chuck Tatum), Thursday, 6 November 2003 21:13 (twenty-one years ago)

about 3 nights ago my brother and i listened to dog man star and fell about oin the floor laughing at the last few camp-opera tracks.
another band i put down to not being very worldly or clever at 17.

paulhw (paulhw), Thursday, 6 November 2003 23:57 (twenty-one years ago)

You not being worldly or clever, or the band? ;-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 6 November 2003 23:58 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh, poor Suede. But they lost it in 1999, surely?

They were my favouritest band ever, the first band I ever fell for right from the get-go: I remember my friend Adam running into my bedroom with "The Drowners" 12" under his arm, switching off Mark Goodier's Evening Session and sticking the record on in its place, and me just...*exploding* at that fantastic drumbeat and Brett's outrageous vocal performance.

I think the first thing I said when it finished was "what do they look like", and when he showed me, that was *it*.I was hugely into Hunky Dory at the time so couldn't believe someone not much older than me was making this amazing stuff, in 1992! I continued to love them for seven years, and nobody can take that from me, ner.

I hope young Brettchen hooks up with the Kronos Quartet or someone and hands in some wondrous avant-Scott Walker stuff. Blissfully unconcerned about what the others will do with themselves.

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Friday, 7 November 2003 10:59 (twenty-one years ago)

I am happy. complete waste of space.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Friday, 7 November 2003 11:03 (twenty-one years ago)

that fantastic drumbeat

Simon and Mat together were the friendliest bandmembers and the most underrated as a team. Really hope they do something more together in future, or at least don't end going blah like, say, Rourke/Joyce.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 7 November 2003 14:19 (twenty-one years ago)

I can see why Julio prefers ILM, what a sparkling contribution.

Nicolars (Nicole), Friday, 7 November 2003 14:53 (twenty-one years ago)

I can't say I'm sad to see Suede go. Better they spilt up now than get consistently worse with age, or - even more horrific - have sudden patches of brilliance surrounded by a sea of sheer dud, so I'm constantly yo-yoing between "oh, no, they are good!" and severe boredom. I hate it when bands do that.

cis (cis), Friday, 7 November 2003 15:00 (twenty-one years ago)

Enrique's right, they're 9 years late. With Bernard, they were a great band. Without, just boring.

Troy, Friday, 7 November 2003 18:44 (twenty-one years ago)

Coming Up /= Boring

Sean (Sean), Friday, 7 November 2003 19:25 (twenty-one years ago)

''I can see why Julio prefers ILM, what a sparkling contribution.''

i know i know I briefly liked coming up actually but mostly terrible for reasons that i can't quite remember as i don't have any records with me anymore. was just in those hate everything moods again.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Friday, 7 November 2003 19:45 (twenty-one years ago)
