Disco-Tex and His Sex-o-Lettes

Hey everyone. I posted here for a minute like six months ago and then didn't, but Matos reminded me the other day of this place and had really nice things to say about everyone, so I thought I'd dive in again.

Anyway, I just found a used CD by Disco-Tex and His Sex-o-Lettes — a disc called Get Dancin' on Collectables Records that I'm (possibly incorrectly) assuming to be some sort of postmortem best-of thingy — and it's amazing! Appealingly bonkers disco-rock with like 27 people singing each song, and they all sound like they were recorded live, which maybe they were. So what's up with these madmen and women? Googling just turned up a bunch of lame lyrics pages, and searching here only a handful of stray Chuck Eddy and Frank Kogan name-checks that didn't really satisfy my need to know who this well-dressed, white-haired Richard Simmons lookalike on the cover is. Anyone?

That Frank Kogan namecheck is something you need to read pronto, so if somebody could provide the link...in the meantime, my own short review. Sir Monti Rock himself is also the club DJ in Saturday Night Fever, I've found out.

The Disco Tex Essay

Broheems (diamond), Tuesday, 11 November 2003 07:06 (twenty-one years ago)

I had this about 10 yrs ago but it got stolen. All I remember was that "Hot Lava" had a totally amazing bassline. Just say "disco," and I hear it, it's part of my brain forever.

I actually picked this up a few weeks ago myself, played it once and thoroughly enjoyed it. Haven't gotten round to putting it on again though..

I used to play "Get Dancin" part two all the time. The part after the "my chiffone is wet, I'm plastered" with the trumpet breaks and that...

Yowza. I think that Frank Kogan Disco-Tex piece linked above broke my brain. Thanks for posting. So did regular people like this band and their music, or only spectacular big-city disco connoisseurs? I ask because I was -4 years old when they appear to have been happening, so I have no sense of context. Well, not a visceral one, anyway.

Also, I don't expect anyone to answer this because this is seeming like a superboring thread in comparison to Paris Hilton sex-tape talk and OMG THE JAY-Z ALBUM LEAKED! So: OMG CAN ANYONE OLD ENOUGH TO TELL ME TELL ME IF DISCO-TEX AND HIS SEX-O-LETTES WERE POPULAR DURING THEIR TIME OR JUST SORT OF AN INTERESTING CURIO UPON WHICH CD REISSUES HAVE BESTOWED AFTER-THE-FACT SIGNIFICANCE? THANKS VERY MUCH!

where is frank these days? i want him to post more :(

He lurks on the philosophy threads mostly, I think. Mikael -- I gather there was some amount of hype around the album's original release and he may even have had a hit single of sorts in the UK...

There was a Disco Tex LP at a used record store I frequent a few weeks back. I was tempted to buy it - it was only $5 - if only because of the Kogan essay, but in the end I didn't. Maybe I should have.

I love how incongruent the track listing on the back cover and the CD track listing are.. and let's talk about unexpected cut outs! You gotta love Collectible releases :)

(or should i say Collectible CD issues.)

"Nobody cares how you wear your hair, darling! Just keep doing it! "

"Get Dancin'" , the single, was a pretty big hit here in America. I mean, I heard it all the time when I was a teenager. Maybe it was a regional tri-state area hit. The album went to the cutout bins pretty quickly, though. I seem to remember him appearing on the afternoon talk shows of the day, like Mike Douglas and Merv Griffin.

saying that you're trying posting again because people had nice things to say about the site and then dissing the content of the site seems a pretty odd way of getting people to answer yr thread.

but hey maybe that's just me.

fiddo centington (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 20:14 (twenty-one years ago)

anyway, maybe it's just the combined eddy/kogan discourse, but i've never wanted to hear disco-tex for fear of ruining whatever i've built up in my head. nothing could compare at this point.

Mikael must have missed last week's Wittgenstein, Derrida, and post-structuralism threads.

anyway, yeah it's funny when I first played "I Wanna Dance Witchoo" I found myself consciously listening for the "olé"! So it sort of ruined my uh, free lunch.

Dude, the dreaded Internet misimplication — always a bummer. Unless I'm more passive-aggressive than I thought, I meant no disrespect in noting that Paris Hilton sex-tape talk and OMG THE JAY-Z ALBUM LEAKED! makes for livelier discussion than a boring card-catalog info request. I mean, it does, doesn't it?

Mikael Wood, Wednesday, 12 November 2003 21:12 (twenty-one years ago)

don't forget sexy librarians.

fiddo centington (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 21:19 (twenty-one years ago)

Disco Tex i.e. monti rock the third, was the DJ on Saturday night fever...
