Killing Joke at Slims on 11/13/03

I waited over two weeks to see them. Here's what happened on November 13,2003.

I woke up that morning kind of tired. I got ready for school. I was almost late. I had to make my lunch that day and I was trying to decide what to bring and what to bring it in.
That day was one of my best friends', Luis' Birthday. Since we have two classes for almost every grade (this is the last year for that though) and he's not in my class, he brought out his back pac to recess. He had put his extra doughnuts in there. He gave me and a few of our other friends in my class a doughnut. I said, "Happy happy birthday" to him after he gave me the duoghnut.
Our volleball team is in second place and we're going to play the championship game on Saturday(11/15/03). We went from fourth to second. We had practice and I skiped it because my legs and sholders were sore.
When I got home I ate a couple pasteries (no dinner)and cleaned up. I tried to take a nap. I was only really asleep for about an hour. Then I watched TV for an hour and then listened to the radio. Then we got ready.
I wore black pants, a big long sleeved shirt, a Mission of Burma t-shirt my mom had me wear, and my all black Converse All Star shoes. My mom made me wear a thin flece jacket and my raincoat. I didn't really need those. My mom wore a brown shirt, blue jeans, some very low heeled boots she wears a lot, and a fur coat that was in a leopered print design. It took her for ever to choose to wear that coat.
We walked to Slims. We didn't leave the house till 9:30. The show started at 9:00. My mom seems to like leaving the house late. When we got there we got searched and then we gave them our tickets. We got our hands stamed and then my mom yelled at me. She said, "What did you forget." She was refering to the earplugs. I told her I didn't forget. We walked to the side in the front. We looked for her friend John. I had only met him once before. Unfortunatly he didn't come.
We put our earplugs in and watched the opening band Amen. Of course I cmplained about the earplugs. I just really hate those things.
During the last song of Amen's set, the singer went into the audience. There was this guy with a Killing Joke shirt behind me sitting on something. The singer from Amen got on top of the bar and kissed the guy with the Killing Joke shirt. Then he grabed some one's drink that was almost finished and threw the rest of it at the people in front of him.
When they were done we went to the front. We waited there for a while. There was a guy with a Nine Inch Nails shirt next to me at the time. I was so excited. My mom got us some water. I finised it in less than a minute. The cup was made out of styrofoam and when I was done with my water I started scatching the cup. I eventually made a hole in it.
They were taking forever to come out. Finally this skiny guy wearing a hat came out. He was the key board player. Then the drummer. Then Geordie and then Raven. My mom called Raven a Raider fan. At first I thought she was talking about Georie because he had on some pants with a black and gray patern. Then I noticed Raven had black face paint on. They started to play a song I didn't know. Then a guy carring a, I guess I'll call it a staff came on stage. He had a hood on. Then I noticed the spider on his shirt and then I realized it was Jaz.
After the first or second song Raven looked at me and smiled. He kind of pointed at me too. Through out the whole show he was looking out for me and smiling at me. He got really mad at this guy who was grabbing one of the monitors. He kicked his hands off of it and bent down and kept playing and he was yelling at the guy. One guy that was crazier jumed on stage. The staff pulled him off stage.
When they played "Change" I turned around and yelled at my mom. I yelled "'Change'!" Then I noticed the set list on the stage.
It listed:
Communion
Requium
Total Invasion
Wardance
Blood on Your Hands
Change
Seeing Red
The Wait
Whiteout
Death and Reserection Show(it just said D&R)
Empire Song
Asteroid
Frenzy
Pssych
--------------------
Loose Canon
and some song I didn't know and can't remember

I was disappointed when I saw that. It didn't have "Kings & Queens" on there. So every chance I got I screamed "Kings & Queens".
I guess it worked becaus thei encor wasn't the same as the set list. They played:
Follow the Leader
?
?
Kings & Queens
?

There was a lot of moving . I can only really say that about the front though. Some one pushed and my face hit the monitor.
When some one pushed from behind I pushed back really hard. Some one put their hand on the monitor and right in front of my face. I grabed their hand and squeezed and tride to dig my nails into their hand. I tried to move their arm. I kicked some guy's knee. He kept pushing me. I made sure I wasn't about to kick my mom so I put my foot on his kneen and then I kicked. There was also this lady who was dancing and pushing me into the stage. I stuck out my elbows so I could balance and wouldn't be pushed into the stage any more. I did get pushed into the stage really hard once though. Eventually people started realizing I was only a kid and tried to protect me. They only realized that because my mom was yelling at them.
I screamed so much and in such a high voice. I didn't realize how high I was screaming because of the earplugs. When they played "The Wait" the kind of stoped. I yelled, "You can't make me wait for 'The Wait'! I've waited two weeks!" During "Asteroid"Iscreamed "Asteroid" right before Jaz so everyone could hear me. Then I said it with Jaz. This lady standing next to me really wanted to hear it. When I yelled for "Kings & Queens", "Night Time", and "The Wait", she yelled For "Asteroid". Then I yelled, "That one too!" I told her I could see the set list and told her it was just a couple of songs away.
Near the end I yelled "Geordie" and then some one yelled "Walker." For a second I thought I yelled the wrong name. I couldn't have, other wise Walker lookes exactly like Geordie. I actually have no idea of what Walker looks like.
I enjoyed the whole thing so much. I love to do it again. The only prolem would be we wouldn't be able to go up to the front. My mom is much too worried now.

Aja (aja), Friday, 14 November 2003 18:49 (twenty-two years ago)

Holy sheep shit!

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 14 November 2003 19:10 (twenty-two years ago)

What do you mean?

Aja (aja), Friday, 14 November 2003 19:15 (twenty-two years ago)

I think he approves of your fine work!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 14 November 2003 19:15 (twenty-two years ago)

He'd better. I've got brusies on my left arm.

Aja (aja), Friday, 14 November 2003 19:17 (twenty-two years ago)

a Mission of Burma t-shirt my mom had me wear

that's totally awesome!

geeta (geeta), Friday, 14 November 2003 19:19 (twenty-two years ago)

just how young is Aja, and are you converting your teen friends to the mighty Killing Joke - you know spreading the gospel - and diverting them away from rubbish such as pop-punk, emo and Korn-y rap metal?

DJ Martian (djmartian), Friday, 14 November 2003 19:20 (twenty-two years ago)

How so?

Aja (aja), Friday, 14 November 2003 19:20 (twenty-two years ago)

Listen, darlin', your bruises are your own doing, not mine and not the Joke's, but well bloody done all the same!

Geordie's last name is Walker, by the way.

Did you stick around afterwards and talk with the band? Despite popular opinion, they're actually a bunch of nice guys (well, some of them are, anyway. Heh heh heh.)

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 14 November 2003 19:21 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm twelve. I'm not really "speading the gospel" as you call it. I'm a bit embarassed because I go to Catholic school. I don't really want them to know. The only person who has any idea of who and what Killing Joke sound like is my friend Luis.

Aja (aja), Friday, 14 November 2003 19:24 (twenty-two years ago)

I did not stay. I would have loved to but my mom really wanted to go. That's the only thing that disappoints me. You know it's really not fair. Last time I went to Slims I saw Shonen Knife. I didn't even know who the were till then. That time, I talked to them and got their autographs. I don't even like them as much as Killing Joke. I do like them though. But it wasn't till then.

Aja (aja), Friday, 14 November 2003 19:29 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm a bit embarassed because I go to Catholic school.

! I would have thought your rock and roll mom would just let you go to regular school!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 14 November 2003 19:31 (twenty-two years ago)

Fear not, Aja. They'll be back (or so they promise). Next time, handcuff yourself to something firmly bolted down and refuse to leave until you've properly fraternized with the boys in the Jocular brethren.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 14 November 2003 19:33 (twenty-two years ago)

I went to fourteen years of Catholic school. Don't worry, it won't leave too much of a mental stain.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 14 November 2003 19:34 (twenty-two years ago)

I like going to Catholic school. It's really easy deciding what to wear because it's already been decided for us.

Aja (aja), Friday, 14 November 2003 19:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Hahaha

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 14 November 2003 19:38 (twenty-two years ago)

this thread warms my heart.

See, if I was one of those cheeky posters, this would be a nice lead-in to a "joke" of some sort...

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Friday, 14 November 2003 19:46 (twenty-two years ago)

That's naughty Alex. Bad boy;)

jimharper666, Friday, 14 November 2003 19:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Although I think someone should send her a copy of the t-shirt with the picture of the pope blessing fascists. Just for her last day at school.

jimharper666, Friday, 14 November 2003 19:49 (twenty-two years ago)

That sounds really awesome Aja! I'm glad you had such a good time.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 14 November 2003 19:54 (twenty-two years ago)

My mom says,"Raven Rocks!" I agree. The lady that I stuck my elbows out for was feeling every one includind me up. My mom just informed me. I didn't know she was doing that. I did yell, "Get OFF" really loud though. My mom threatened to kill her if she kept doing it. Raven defanatly heard me and he must have heard my mom because when she moved to the other side of me she was kissing this guy and Raven put his hand on her head and mesed up her hair. Then he pushed her. Iwas looking at her and then shen gave me a weired look. I gave her a look that said I was disgusted with her.

Aja (aja), Friday, 14 November 2003 19:59 (twenty-two years ago)

wait a minute, is your mom BurmaKitty?

lawrence kansas (lawrence kansas), Friday, 14 November 2003 20:08 (twenty-two years ago)

Yes

Aja (aja), Friday, 14 November 2003 20:09 (twenty-two years ago)

two generations of ILM'ers!

lawrence kansas (lawrence kansas), Friday, 14 November 2003 20:10 (twenty-two years ago)

My mom was hurting other people as well. She pulled and twisted their skin. She kicked them. And pulled their ears. This was mainly one person though. We found his cell phone on the floor. She says that if she knew it was his she would have stepped on it. He came with hi friend all the way from London.

Aja (aja), Friday, 14 November 2003 20:15 (twenty-two years ago)

My friend Alex just passed this URL on to me. Really awesome to hear of a 12 year old girl, not only going to a Joke show, but also enjoying it this much. Also, Alex in NYC is right. Plans to tour the US again in March - April 2004 are already being set. Expect the next tour to be even more explosive! Check www.killing-joke.com for updates in the coming year....

And yes, Raven does indeed ROCK. One of the nicest fellows I know.

Jester, Friday, 14 November 2003 20:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Alex, you know if I got those for my uniform I wouldn't be able to wear them in front of my home room teacher. He really doesn't like to see Jesus being crucified. I think our classroom is the only one without a crucifix.

Aja (aja), Friday, 14 November 2003 20:28 (twenty-two years ago)

why aren't you at school? I went out last night and I had to go to work today, no calling in sick for me!

anthony kyle monday (akmonday), Friday, 14 November 2003 20:29 (twenty-two years ago)

All better then. Like all things "Killing Joke", the reactions of others is one of the most enjoyable things. ;-)

Jester (Jester), Friday, 14 November 2003 20:30 (twenty-two years ago)

I could have. I got up early enough. I got up earlier than usual as a mater of fact. It's my mom. She got up at like ten. Besides, I not missing anything at school today. The only thing would be art class. I saw our art teacher on Wednesday. She was theaching the other 7th grade. I got my art project from her and I'm working on it. Plus I didn't buy lunch. I don't want to have to go through what I did yesterday again.
I'm glad your going to work though. Besides, you get paid to go to work. We pay to go to Catholic school.

Aja (aja), Friday, 14 November 2003 20:36 (twenty-two years ago)

It's also raining over here today. I hate rainy days at school. They're long and boring.

Aja (aja), Friday, 14 November 2003 20:39 (twenty-two years ago)

My mom was hurting other people as well. She pulled and twisted their skin. She kicked them. And pulled their ears. This was mainly one person
though. We found his cell phone on the floor. She says that if she knew it was his she would have stepped on it. He came with hi friend all the way from

One has to wonder!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 14 November 2003 20:45 (twenty-two years ago)

What do you mean?

Aja (aja), Friday, 14 November 2003 20:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Who this person is! Is he your mom's sworn enemy or what?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 14 November 2003 21:03 (twenty-two years ago)

No. Just some big fat guy who was slaming into every one. I think he's the one I kicked.

Aja (aja), Friday, 14 November 2003 21:04 (twenty-two years ago)

Do any of you think I could be a writer based on this. I really do want to become one. That's why I liked 6th grade so much. We wrote lots of poems and we even wrote our own story. Most of those poems we wrote are kind of sappy though. We had to like make them meaning full too.

Aja (aja), Friday, 14 November 2003 21:17 (twenty-two years ago)

:-) Aja, think of it this way, you told a far better story of the show than I could have if I was there at 12 years old. The trick is to keep trying and writing, and to ask around. Start a paper if you like, set up a website, find out who is doing what, whatever. Sure you might look back at this in a few years (or even sooner) and think, "Man, I could have written THAT a lot better," but that would just mean you've gained even more confidence in yerself as a writer. And that's a fine thing!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 14 November 2003 21:21 (twenty-two years ago)

What Ned said!

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 14 November 2003 21:23 (twenty-two years ago)

whatever man, Aja's stuff is better than half of what's in the Voice. C. Eddy, send this girl an email!

hstencil, Friday, 14 November 2003 21:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Heh. That WOULD be cool. :-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 14 November 2003 21:29 (twenty-two years ago)

That was a better story of the show than 95% of pro critics would have done! Most of the live reviews I read are pretty useless.

(x-post)

Jordan (Jordan), Friday, 14 November 2003 21:31 (twenty-two years ago)

Thanks so much. I like it when people compilment me on my writing. I enjoy writing so much. I just wish I enjoyed typing that much.

Aja (aja), Friday, 14 November 2003 21:35 (twenty-two years ago)

Take a typing class. Sounds dull, I know, but I can type like the wind now and don't even think about it.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 14 November 2003 21:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Also, knowing how to type swiftly will only enhance your marketability as a staff writer somewhere. Fortify thy skills, Aja.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 14 November 2003 21:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Alex is very right here, Aja -- the typing I learned in high school is probably the most productive and useful class from the whole four years I was there. It's terrible to have to learn initially, you will get a bit frustrated, but once you have it down and can keep regularly practicing on it, it will indeed be a breeze. I'm an incredibly fast typer myself and very glad of it!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 14 November 2003 21:41 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm better at typing now than I was only a week ago. I'm trying. I type slower than I used to. That's only becuase I've learned more letters and I'm really trying for acuracy. I'm already a bad speller. Don't want to make it seem worse.

Aja (aja), Friday, 14 November 2003 21:42 (twenty-two years ago)

Good! Then keep at it -- once you've got a better sense of accuracy and how to type more or less unconsciously, the speed will build back up.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 14 November 2003 21:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 22 November 2003 03:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Wow! What is this movie about?

My friend Luis said he thinks Killing Joke were on Sabrina the Teenage Witch. Is that true?

Aja (aja), Saturday, 22 November 2003 03:46 (twenty-two years ago)

I've had "Europe" stuck in my head all day. I has become very annoying.

Aja (aja), Saturday, 22 November 2003 03:59 (twenty-two years ago)

http://www.rokdabla.cz/images/rok_dabla_film_010_500.jpg

Who's playing the violin? I play violin. Don't you just love Jaz in this picture? Hey, maybe one day that'll be me playing violin in an elevator and meeting Jaz Coleman.

Aja (aja), Saturday, 22 November 2003 04:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Sorry. http://www.rokdabla.cz/images/rok_dabla_film_010_500.jpg

Aja (aja), Saturday, 22 November 2003 04:15 (twenty-two years ago)

That's Karen Holas from the band Cechomor. In this scene, Jaz gets on a hotel elevator and discovers Karen playing in the elevator (that's his job...instead of piped-in elevator music, the hotel saves money by having a live musician in there). Jaz instantly becomes a big fan and offers to have Cechomor play with the Czech Symphony Orchestra. Hijinx, predictably, ensue.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 22 November 2003 04:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Sorry, KareL, not Karen.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 22 November 2003 04:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Did you like this movie Alex?

Aja (aja), Saturday, 22 November 2003 04:24 (twenty-two years ago)

It's quite odd, but yes I did.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 22 November 2003 04:41 (twenty-two years ago)

What happens in the movie?

Aja (aja), Saturday, 22 November 2003 04:45 (twenty-two years ago)

It's exceptionally hard to describe, but it involves a gaggle of musicians from the Czech Republic who join up through a series of strange occurences and disparate reasons and the fruits of their endeavor.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 22 November 2003 04:57 (twenty-two years ago)

Where can I buy this? I'd like to see it.

Aja (aja), Saturday, 22 November 2003 05:01 (twenty-two years ago)

It's mighty hard to track down. Through the good graces of a fellow Gatherer (http://www.misera.net/gathering/), I obtained a VHS copy. It's out on DVD, but only in Europe so far. Keep an eye open on Amazon for it, or ask at your local video store. If you do manage to get a copy, though, don't expect it to change your life. Jaz is mighty funny throughout, but there are lot of dull moments. The humour is very dry.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 22 November 2003 05:08 (twenty-two years ago)

Ok. Whatever, I still want to see it.

Aja (aja), Saturday, 22 November 2003 05:14 (twenty-two years ago)

How did Jaz get a role in a movie in the first place?

Aja (aja), Saturday, 22 November 2003 17:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Well, for a start, the Joke have a significantly higher profile overseas. Secondly, he was composer-in-residence for the Prague Symphony Orchestra. Thirdly, if you were casting a movie and had a vacancy for a crazed, occult-obsessed psychopath, wouldn't you cast Jaz Coleman? It was assuredly the role he was born to play.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 22 November 2003 20:19 (twenty-two years ago)

Ok. I guess so.

Aja (aja), Saturday, 22 November 2003 20:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 22 November 2003 20:36 (twenty-two years ago)

Aja (aja), Saturday, 22 November 2003 20:37 (twenty-two years ago)

I just remembered. One of the songs they played for their encore was "Fall of Because".

Aja (aja), Sunday, 23 November 2003 16:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Alex, which do you think is better, Night Time or what's THIS for...!?

Aja (aja), Sunday, 23 November 2003 19:50 (twenty-two years ago)

They're very different albums, but I'll always pick Night Time.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Sunday, 23 November 2003 20:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Me too.

Aja (aja), Sunday, 23 November 2003 21:12 (twenty-two years ago)

Is it becuase of "Eighties"?

Aja (aja), Sunday, 23 November 2003 21:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Well, that's part of it, but Night Time was the first album of theirs I'd ever bought (prior to that, all I had was the 12" of "Eighties", the 12" of "A New Day" and the 12" of "Let's All Go (to the Fire Dances)". For my money, Night Time is sheer perfection from start to finish.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Sunday, 23 November 2003 21:40 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't know if it's perfect. I mean, I don't like "Multitudes" all that much. On the other hand, I really like "Night Time", "Love Like Blood", "Kings & Queens", and I'm starting to like "Tabazan" more than the first time I heard it.

I got my money's worth within the first couple of days of me owning it.

Aja (aja), Sunday, 23 November 2003 21:49 (twenty-two years ago)

Funny you should mention "Multitudes," as its my least favorite track on the album as well (although it still shits from a great, splattery height all over anything by virtually any other band). The coda of that song is quite nice, actually, wherein Jaz is repeatedly intoning A Means to No End! God bless Killing Joke.

Do yourself a favour and don't talk about the lyrics of "Tabazan" with your mother.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Sunday, 23 November 2003 21:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Do yourself a favour and don't talk about the lyrics of "Tabazan" with your mother.

Don't worry one bit. I will not.

One day I was practicing my typing and I was typing the lyrics to the songs on Night Time. I had to stop when I got to "Tabazan". I got about half way through, and then I had to stop. I couldn't take it. It's still a good song though.

Aja (aja), Sunday, 23 November 2003 22:02 (twenty-two years ago)

My mom likes "Kings & Queens" now. That is my favorite song on Night Time.

Aja (aja), Sunday, 23 November 2003 22:21 (twenty-two years ago)

How do you feel about "Tabazan"?

Aja (aja), Sunday, 23 November 2003 22:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Was "Eighties" the first song you heard by Killing Joke?

Aja (aja), Sunday, 23 November 2003 23:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Alex, do you like "Fall of Because" or "Follow the Leaders" more?

Aja (aja), Monday, 24 November 2003 00:12 (twenty-two years ago)

Alex, why haven't you answered my questions?

Aja (aja), Monday, 24 November 2003 01:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Hard as it may be for you to believe, Aja, I do step away from my computer and leave my apartment on occaision.

To answer your questions:
1. I adore "Tabazan"
2. Yes, "Eighties" was my introduction to Killing Joke, in the early summer of 1984.
3. I prefer "Follow.." over "Fall of..", but love them both. "Follow the Leaders" has the superior riff.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 24 November 2003 03:25 (twenty-two years ago)

This just in...

From the official site: Due to unforseen circumstances todays gig at The Metro in Sydney has had to be cancelled. The three further Australian dates will take place as advertised.

The straight poop from the Gathering message board:

I shall be writing up a full report on all gigs, meetings with the band and my flight sitting right next to Jaz from Brisbane to Melbourne very soon - I am still recovering from the most amazing experience.

However it is now time to mourn. Jaz told me on the plane (during consumption of copious amounts of scotch and chardonnay in Business Class) that
the driver of the truck shipping all their equipment was killed in a head on collision whilst driving from Bris bane to Melbourne. All their equipment, including Geordies Gold has been smashed.

As Jaz concluded - who gives a fuck about the equipment. A life has been tragically lost, and the gig tonight in Melbourne (where I am now) will probably be cancelled. Maybe, maybe not...it is up in the air, but in the worst case scenario, Jaz said he would runa spoken word gig, in homage of the killed driver.

A cruel blow to a life and to the spirit of the Joke.

I can now post something Killing Joke related to this thread since after a five year absence my vinyl collection has returned to me. I found a live 9inch(?) KJ record that I swear came as a freebie with another record- Alex any idea? (this record dates back to the very early 80's)

Could by the single for "Follow the Leaders" or Ha!Killing Joke Live!. Either way, worth holding onto.

2. Yes, "Eighties" was my introduction to Killing Joke, in the early summer of 1984.
3. I prefer "Follow.." over "Fall of..", but love them both.

Me too. I only heard "Eighties" a little less than a year ago.

1. I adore "Tabazan"
I don't adore "Tabazan", but I do think it's a good song.

There is going to be this Academic Decatalon. It's for the Catholic schools. I was thinking of trying for the math part of it.

I'm going to be particapating in the Academic Decathlon. I'm going to be doing all science instead of Math like I had hoped. I have to study stuff from both the 7th and 8th grade science books.
