Can yous-guys help me compile rock stars that are becoming the dumpy, balding variety (e.g. David Lee Roth)?

PappaWheelie, Friday, 14 November 2003 22:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Corgan to thread, and the bass player from explosions in the sky (he's a fucking cool guy though)

Felcher (Felcher), Friday, 14 November 2003 22:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Jonathan Davis from Korn

Paul Simon recently stopped wearing a toupee (at least when I saw him on Letterman w/Garfunkel - who has the fro in tact)

Matt Helgeson (Matt Helgeson), Friday, 14 November 2003 22:28 (twenty-two years ago)

just turn on vh1. HI-YO!!!!

Dean Gulberry (deangulberry), Friday, 14 November 2003 22:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Will Oldham, for one.

I always thought Jeff Ament had to be bald or balding cause you never saw him without some goofy hat or other (a Tell-Tale Sign). But then I saw some interview footage of him somewhere recently, sans chapeau, and he appeared to have his own hair. So apparently he has no excuse for the goofy hats.

Lee G (Lee G), Friday, 14 November 2003 22:30 (twenty-two years ago)

so is this how vh1 manages to put out all these bad shows? i should've known that all these meta-shows were the television equivalent of ilx.

Dean Gulberry (deangulberry), Friday, 14 November 2003 22:31 (twenty-two years ago)

Jeff Ament's goofy hats were always my favorite thing about Pearl Jam.

ah, so Chunklet has found a new theme for their next hit issue, then. A laugh riot in the waiting.

donut bitch (donut), Friday, 14 November 2003 22:44 (twenty-two years ago)

It all depends on how they carry it off. David Gilmour is balding and dumpy, but he still manages to look pretty good.

Elvis Telecom (Chris Barrus), Friday, 14 November 2003 22:50 (twenty-two years ago)

haha bald men are funny because they look old and no women want to sleep with them ha ha ha

syd barrett

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Friday, 14 November 2003 23:42 (twenty-two years ago)

Does this quite count?

donut bitch (donut), Friday, 14 November 2003 23:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Syd Barrett? ouch

Schwingung (Damian), Friday, 14 November 2003 23:50 (twenty-two years ago)

doug martsch.. but you could argue against the 'becoming' bald and fat part because I know of him no other way..

bill stevens (bscrubbins), Friday, 14 November 2003 23:53 (twenty-two years ago)

i don't think he's vh1 worthy.

Dean Gulberry (deangulberry), Saturday, 15 November 2003 00:04 (twenty-two years ago)

It's the Bun E. Carlos theory: if you always look old, you will appear never to age. Doug kinda has that going for him too.

Matt Helgeson (Matt Helgeson), Saturday, 15 November 2003 00:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Hey you can check out a lot of different bands lyrics here.

Jenn, Saturday, 15 November 2003 00:42 (twenty-two years ago)

the mighty Sting ... but he keeps discreetly adding a little here and there.

bahtology, Saturday, 15 November 2003 05:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh, and while I haven't seen it with my own eyes, Cex has reportedly gotten his lush, full early-twentysomething locks cut to aproximate male pattern baldness with a comb-over. Just 'cause.

Lee G (Lee G), Saturday, 15 November 2003 06:13 (twenty-two years ago)

I thought this was cute:

No...it's just how *I* do it. And I've only worked her 8 days...

These others have no clue.

Nice jab though.

Not sure I deserve shit over this one...I've been a member of I Love Music since the days it was back on Greenspun, and I've enough friends here to ask a question and expect an honest response from them...despite who asked me for it 1st. True, I do research for VH1, and have done so for a whopping 2 weeks now. Obviously, this work does not make up their past shows...and they have different techniques to get their info. Some guy in my office (despite being a VH1 office) asked me to list all the balding rock stars I could (I doubt it was for a show; I believe it was just office fodder)...so I gave him my list...then I posted the question to my normal boards/groups to see what others would come up with. Some friends answered, then one of your typical self important types and his typical cynicism caused him to make a statement that happened to have an ounce of (incidental) truth in it...so I sent him a 'confirmation' e-mail notifying him of the coincidental fact that I do work for VH1. He then posted my personal e-mail to the board. Class act!

PappaWheelie, Thursday, 20 November 2003 21:21 (twenty-two years ago)

*checks* I can change your e-mail in the posted message if you like, but looking up thread that's the same e-mail you posted initially? Sorry, just trying to clear this up.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 20 November 2003 21:30 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah, i blocked out the phone number. i left the email since it was already on the thread. i mostly was taken aback by the "The others have no clue" comment, which i figured they should be clued in on. i dunno, i'd be upset if someone was making a quick buck off our innocent chatter.

Dean Gulberry (deangulberry), Thursday, 20 November 2003 21:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Ned, it seems like Joe is complaining not so much that his personal e-mail address was posted, but a personal e-mail message. This is just basic nettiquette 101. If someone makes a comment in a personal message, it's probably meant to be personal, otherwise, Joe would've responded on this forum. Joe sent a message with the "these others" comments, and whether taken seriously or not(I'd think he was kidding, but I know Joe) I can't imagine it would be appropriate to have that email forwarded back to the list.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Thursday, 20 November 2003 22:04 (twenty-two years ago)

understandable. i just took issue with him responding to being called out for it by saying that everyone hadn't a clue, which to me already broke any ilm protocol or desire to be civil. maybe i think passing the opinions of others off as your own is more of a serious thing than other ilxors. as long as michael ian black is on the new vh1 show "C/D," then i guess i shouldn't complain.

Dean Gulberry (deangulberry), Thursday, 20 November 2003 22:07 (twenty-two years ago)

I just think there was a miscommunication on exactly what was meant by the "others" comment, I think he was joking about vh1, not dissing this community, but again, I have the benefit of knowing him, so maybe I have a different insight. But I can't imagine a scenario where Joe, or anyone(and I know a few excellent music fans who work there) would come on here, pose what seems like a harmless question, take it to VH1 for the new show "things I made up myself" and walk away with a huge bonus check for it. Many many many people on I Love Music are music journalists, run record labels, book shows etc, and I think we all share the common interest in the posing of silly questions and the intense analytical discussion of them. For what it's worth, my suggestion of Syd Barrett was made solely for it's absurdity and humor. But it probably wasn't very funny.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Thursday, 20 November 2003 22:14 (twenty-two years ago)

you have a point, but it's hard to *not* read bad intent into it when someone with a vh1staff email is looking to "compile" a list of information that most people wouldn't care enough about to make a list of their own, nonetheless, "compile." but again, the email just confirmed that notion and really seemed against the free flow of ideas that ilx is about. either way, a mod can delete the message or the subthread if they wish. i am not that concerned. i just thought it relevant.

Dean Gulberry (deangulberry), Thursday, 20 November 2003 22:19 (twenty-two years ago)

Let's recap:

I ask a question as an individual to this board, despite where I work.

Someone makes a wise-ass remark basically saying, "oh, this is how VH1 operates". (Needless to say, this is undoubtedly a crime!). By chance, I do work for VH1. I thought this coincidence was worth pointing out to him personally.

I send him a personal e-mail from my work account saying, "the others here have no clue...this is just how I operate.” The 2nd half of this statement is the give away as to whom I was referring to.

Granted, I failed to word it this way:

"The others here AT VH1 have no clue about ILM..." Again, what would “this is how I operate” mean in any other context?

He 1st responds by posting "he’s not VH1 worthy".

This can't be all that true...they sought me out.

In the end, my e-mail gets called "cute" by the instigator, and posted to the board.

And my public defense only goes noticed by my esteemed friend.

I sent e-mail offlist clearing this up with the moderator and offender, but I of course know better than to post that publicly.

PappaWheelie, Thursday, 20 November 2003 22:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Ned, it seems like Joe is complaining not so much that his personal e-mail address was posted, but a personal e-mail message.

Ah, got it -- sorry, I did miss a very obvious point there about posting private mail. I hope everything's cleared up now.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 20 November 2003 22:39 (twenty-two years ago)

well, i was calling doug martsch "not vh1 worthy" (which i still think is absolutely very true) and my comment was in reference to the post directly preceeding it in the thread. anyhow, aren't we just beating a dead horse? we've both jumped to silly conclusions now. i've said what i've wanted. again, apologies for posting the email. i misunderstood you and thought you were referring to ilxors as being clueless. i still stand by my initial assumption though re: producers mining internet forums for content. i think it is a completely valid point. done.

Dean Gulberry (deangulberry), Thursday, 20 November 2003 23:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Can we get back onto balding rock stars?

I'd like to add that, yes, Sting is discreetly adding locks here and there. Unlike Jeremy Piven, Sting mastered the art of plugs, in that you never give yourself a full head of hair — rather, you make it look like your hairline is permanently receding, but never receded.

Paul Rogers has clearly gone to this art as well.

Naive Teen Idol (Naive Teen Idol), Thursday, 20 November 2003 23:30 (twenty-two years ago)

er, rather, mastered it.

Naive Teen Idol (Naive Teen Idol), Thursday, 20 November 2003 23:31 (twenty-two years ago)

when they were booking Michael Jackson and they said "Sex?" he said "Yes please!"

no, really, folks, I'm hear all week.

I couldn't believe someone mentioned David Gilmour at the start of this thread. Despite being like, the richest man in the world, I've just never seen him as a "rock star" per se.

Now Richard Wright....
