make me

Huckleberry Mann (Horace Mann), Monday, 17 November 2003 15:25 (twenty-one years ago)

no.

fiddo centington (dubplatestyle), Monday, 17 November 2003 15:25 (twenty-one years ago)

oh wait, some pretty girls like him. or they did 8 years ago at least.

Huckleberry Mann (Horace Mann), Monday, 17 November 2003 15:25 (twenty-one years ago)

THEY'RE JAMIROQUAI!!!!

nickalicious (nickalicious), Monday, 17 November 2003 15:25 (twenty-one years ago)

A lot of pretty girls working in the food service industry liked him as little as 5 years ago.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Monday, 17 November 2003 15:26 (twenty-one years ago)

I like how we call him "him" even though I guess it's a band.

Huckleberry Mann (Horace Mann), Monday, 17 November 2003 15:26 (twenty-one years ago)

15 years from now, he will turn out to be as seminal as fuck and we will all love him.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Monday, 17 November 2003 15:27 (twenty-one years ago)

I like how we call him "him" even though I guess it's a band.

Oh, like he doesn't still get people going "Hey you! Jamiroquai!" every fucking day.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Monday, 17 November 2003 15:27 (twenty-one years ago)

'deeper underground' had a decent bassline -- johnny cigarettes said so. why are y'all looking at me like that?

enrique (Enrique), Monday, 17 November 2003 15:28 (twenty-one years ago)

because johnny cigarettes said so. I liked the first two singles in a Randy Edelman kind of way.

Marcello Carlin, Monday, 17 November 2003 15:30 (twenty-one years ago)

WTF? ALL their songs had fat fucking basslines. It's threads like these that make me remember why I hate everyone.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Monday, 17 November 2003 15:31 (twenty-one years ago)

i still quite like 'too young to die' and 'when you gonna learn' (probably trite to say but would get more love if it WAS Stevie Wonder and the similarity - not just in voice but in the whole styling of the track - is quite tangible) and 'supersonic' had an almost basement jaxxy vibe (ironing etc.) - also i never cared for 'virtual insanity' initially and i hated all the singles off their last album but have found them creeping into my head more than they were ever supposed to only recently, what the hell?

stevem (blueski), Monday, 17 November 2003 15:32 (twenty-one years ago)

I liked "Return of the Space Cowboy", actually.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Monday, 17 November 2003 15:32 (twenty-one years ago)

go and see Lucas Belvaux' Trilogy: One if you want fat basslines. it's a great score; just two double basses thrumming away throughout the entire film.

Marcello Carlin, Monday, 17 November 2003 15:33 (twenty-one years ago)

i'm getting over the fact that i can recall reading JCigs' singles review from july 1998 and have forgotten books' worth of other stuff. damn.
WTF? ALL their songs had fat fucking basslines. It's threads like these that make me remember why I hate everyone.
i once got beaten up for slagging jamiroquai, so i've earned the right to not hate on all of it. but nick, chill.

enrique (Enrique), Monday, 17 November 2003 15:33 (twenty-one years ago)

I cannot chill when this injustice is going down! TEH FUTURE'S MADE UP! VIRTUAL INSANITY!

nickalicious (nickalicious), Monday, 17 November 2003 15:34 (twenty-one years ago)

i think the hate for the band comes more from Jay K's image rather than his voice (weedier Stevie Wonder not THAT bad a thing cos he does do it pretty dam well) or the music (bog standard jazz funk production, the band are actually very good if staid musicians). he should not have persisted with the stupid hats or the long greasy hair for so long perhaps...some points salvaged back for amusing rows with Denise Van Outen tho.

stevem (blueski), Monday, 17 November 2003 15:35 (twenty-one years ago)

also he went on a big environenMentalist tip for the first 2 albums but then decided he liked big fast gas-hungry cars and bling for the later ones - but maybe that's not a bad thing as such

stevem (blueski), Monday, 17 November 2003 15:36 (twenty-one years ago)

(Honestly I've only ever heard Return of the Space Cowboy. I love all the digeridoo stuff they did in particular.)

nickalicious (nickalicious), Monday, 17 November 2003 15:36 (twenty-one years ago)

i plan to start a whole series of threads on mainsteam acid jazz/funk this month - be warned

stevem (blueski), Monday, 17 November 2003 15:37 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah, it is jay kay who is hateable, the music really isn't that offensive; as for it being retro -- well, let he who is without seventies stylings cast the first stone.

enrique (Enrique), Monday, 17 November 2003 15:38 (twenty-one years ago)

I like his hat!

Matt Helgeson (Matt Helgeson), Monday, 17 November 2003 15:39 (twenty-one years ago)

Nickalicious OTM. That's the only album I've heard, too, but it's pretty dope.

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 17 November 2003 17:09 (twenty-one years ago)

Shit, there's one song on that that's really fast and starts out with a car engine revving...that song is great!

nickalicious (nickalicious), Monday, 17 November 2003 17:09 (twenty-one years ago)

It's been a while since I heard it, but I remember the song I put on a couple mixtapes was "Stillness in Time."

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 17 November 2003 17:12 (twenty-one years ago)

i have a feeling a lot of ILMers would love the Morales mix of 'Space Cowboy'

stevem (blueski), Monday, 17 November 2003 17:15 (twenty-one years ago)

Travelling Without Moving and The Return of the Space Cowboy are both good albums, I enjoy 'em.

Also, Jamiroquai's website is referred to as "Jay Kay's Official Web Site", so He is Jamiroquai and no one else at this point, it seems.

Gear! (Gear!), Monday, 17 November 2003 17:29 (twenty-one years ago)

stevem otm -- well remembered!

enrique (Enrique), Monday, 17 November 2003 17:29 (twenty-one years ago)

Half The Man might have been heavily influenced by the theme to Henry's Cat, kind of, unless I am misremembering. Also, when the settee was bleeding in that video.

Alex in Doncaster (Alex in Doncaster), Monday, 17 November 2003 17:40 (twenty-one years ago)

That one song - ya know, with the moving sidewalk, was a good song. (Funhaters.)

The rest of the CD was disappointing though.

stevem (blueski), Monday, 17 November 2003 19:33 (twenty-one years ago)

from that thread

lets be honest though, since he ditched acid jazz and went disco, he's, well, you know, he's kind of, um, quite good. c'mon, the big single of that last album had all the paradise garage paraphenlia and shit, i know you liked it. j=the guiltiest pleasure of all???

stevem (blueski), Monday, 17 November 2003 19:34 (twenty-one years ago)

the best jamiroquai songs:

when you gonna learn
blow your mind
emergency on planet earth
half the man
light years
mr moon
space cowboy.

i wish had a tape just with that. i still have 'emergency on planet earth' album on tape in my car, and drive around listening to it. alongside arrested development, this is what made 1993 so good!!!!!!!!!!!

ambrose (ambrose), Monday, 17 November 2003 21:50 (twenty-one years ago)

That tickled me - you listen to "Emergency on Planet Earth" whilst just driving around in your car :)

Keith Watson (kmw), Monday, 17 November 2003 22:09 (twenty-one years ago)

the tpe was made by a 13 yr old in a greenpeace 'cars are killing the earth' t shirt. the car was bought by a 23 yr old who just passed his driving test. That makes the irony all the more sweeter. Of course the get-out clause is....i was just emulating my hero Jay Kay!

ambrose (ambrose), Monday, 17 November 2003 22:43 (twenty-one years ago)

Jodie Kidd to thread.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Monday, 17 November 2003 22:45 (twenty-one years ago)

little l was good. i liked the handclaps

charltonlido (gareth), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 00:23 (twenty-one years ago)

that Canned Heat song was kinda silly fun and so was the video. Especially when he declared that this boogie is for real.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 00:23 (twenty-one years ago)

I went back and listened some of their old stuff and found a lot of the songs I remember liking seem a lot more like riffs and less like songs ("You Are My Love," "Alright"), but a lot of the stuff on Synkronized (or whatever) seems really good right now. "Planet Home" is still amazing, especially with those synthy-air-raid-sireny washes kick in again towards the end after the breakdown. "Butterfly," "Canned Heat," and "Supersonic" also are damned good.

Eric H. (Eric H.), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 03:44 (twenty-one years ago)

'deeper underground' had a decent bassline

trudat. but that was not a very typical jamiroquai track. just about the rest were lame funk jams.

also:
virtual insanity: good melody, shame about the lyrics.
one or two songs on the debut had a swampy funk basement quality to them, but apart from that: SHITE!

and:
"I love with a little l" - subtle or moronic?

Jay Kid (Jay K), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 15:15 (twenty-one years ago)

"I love YOU with a little l", that is, of course. But is it clever or idiotic? I'm in doubt myself.

Jay Kid (Jay K), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 15:16 (twenty-one years ago)

It's actually "you make me love you with a little l," which puts the onus of responsibility in their relationship on the other. Maybe doesn't skew the scale to clever or idiotic, but nasty.

Eric H. (Eric H.), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 03:18 (twenty-one years ago)

one year passes...
Jamiroquai's sophomore record has all the slinky grooves and great musicianship of the debut, but it also offers a better set of songs and more ambitious musical themes.

Oh oh yeah
Don't you know,
That now you blow my mind
Honey,
You're sweeter
Than anything, I need you
Want to get closer to you
I want you get closer to you now

Love ya
I need ya
I think I wanna squeeze ya
Nightly,
So tightly,
Girl you know you really blow my mind

Say it again,
Just one more time
I've got to know,
How you came to blow my mind
Closer

Pleasure, passion
Tonite's the night I'm looking for your action
I want to hold you,
Don't you know now you blow my mind
Say it again,
Just one more time
I've got to know,
How you came to blow my mind
Closer,

Fever, hot now,
Help me wipe the sweat away from my brow,
Sexy
Oh lady,
Don't you know this time you blow my mind

Oh don't you know yeah,
Don't you know by now that now you blow my mind
Oh yes you do
Oh yes you do
Oh yes you blow my mind

jamiroquai make great poppy soul-jazz-funk records. fuck the rock mainstream critic evaluation that jay kay just sounds like stevie wonder, go and listen to glenn lewis to see what a stevie xerox singer really sounds like. if you dont like (modern?) soul-jazz-funk, then chances are you wont like jamiroqai. cos most people who like that sort of music, do like him.

blahbariantheoriginal, Wednesday, 25 May 2005 08:14 (twenty years ago)

five years pass...

wonder how the jamiroquais will fare in the 90s revival

badly, i hope

English: The Money Woman (history mayne), Thursday, 27 May 2010 14:34 (fifteen years ago)

They won't really feature would be my guess - they mostly lost their 90s vibe when they dropped the digeridoos and the eco stuff. Their subsequent stuff is timeless.

Ismael Klata, Thursday, 27 May 2010 16:02 (fifteen years ago)

haha

can't believe how 70s-retro their first records were though

just shameless, bringing nothing new at all

English: The Money Woman (history mayne), Thursday, 27 May 2010 16:08 (fifteen years ago)

Gene! Everett True went head-over-heels for Gene when he was playing the contrarian after Suede came out. His endless gushing reviews about how Gene touch his soul are still possibly the most embarrassing things I've ever read.

On-form Jamiroquai were ace, though

"Cosmic Girl" - "Alright" - "High Times" - "Deeper Underground" - "Canned Heat" - "Supersonic" - "King for a Day" - "Little L" - "You Give Me Something" - "Love Foolosophy" - "Feels Just Like It Should"

...and am a little curious about how I will feel in another 5 years.
