Great (or good) albums of 2004?

Okay, so Raymond is asking about the worst albums of 2004
here, but what are some great (or even good) albums people have heard that are due out in 2004. The only one I've heard so far is the new Telefon Tel Aviv, and it's really great. The vocals take some getting used to, but with every listen I'm falling more in love with it.

Cee-Lo Green Is the Soul Machine January 16th!!!

nickalicious (nickalicious), Monday, 17 November 2003 19:51 (twenty-two years ago)

nickalicious (nickalicious), Monday, 17 November 2003 19:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Oneida: Secret Wars (Jagjaguwar)
Air: Talkie Walkie (Astralwerks)
Liars: They Were So Wrong We Drowned (Mute)

Albums I am looking forward to, courtesy of Pitchfork's crack team of crack teamsters.

Dean Gulberry (deangulberry), Monday, 17 November 2003 20:12 (twenty-two years ago)

If anyone has heard that Air album I want to hear all about it

Sonny A. (Keiko), Monday, 17 November 2003 20:34 (twenty-two years ago)

the new Mountain Goats is superb

M Matos (M Matos), Monday, 17 November 2003 20:35 (twenty-two years ago)

Me too! I didn't even know they had a new one in the works.

The Roots have a new album coming out in the spring, don't they? It's called, like, Tipping Point or something?

x-post I'm beginning to doubt that a not-awesome Mountain Goats album could be made!

nickalicious (nickalicious), Monday, 17 November 2003 20:36 (twenty-two years ago)

the Air is good, I wasn't a fan of 10,000 Hz. Whatever but I like this one OK--gothier and less cheesetastic, which is a good move for them.

the MG record is very music-oriented, fewer lyrics and more of a small-band singer-songwriter groove thing happening (a la s/t records by Paul Simon and Lucinda Williams--that kind of groove, not an R&B kind of thing). great playing, basically. songwriting as good as ever.

M Matos (M Matos), Monday, 17 November 2003 20:38 (twenty-two years ago)

What about Kanye West College Dropout? Has anyone heard that?

Matt Helgeson (Matt Helgeson), Monday, 17 November 2003 20:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Shirokuma - Secret Moves at the Midnight Chess Club

Release date now April-ish.

Lynskey (Lynskey), Monday, 17 November 2003 20:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Also, I haven't heard it BUT ---

The Hold Steady Almost Killed Me

Matt Helgeson (Matt Helgeson), Monday, 17 November 2003 20:49 (twenty-two years ago)

OH YEAH. that one. it's excellent.

M Matos (M Matos), Monday, 17 November 2003 20:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Looking forward to the new Morrissey album. I've only listened to "The First of the Gang to Die" and its his best song in 8 years.

What about Kanye West College Dropout? Has anyone heard that?
-- Matt Helgeson (mat...), November 17th, 2003

i'm hyped for this. i know it was delayed cos the label thought it wasn't commercial enough, i hope he doesn't mess around with it too much.

Isnt Macho Man putting out an album soon? Rap or something...

bill stevens (bscrubbins), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 00:20 (twenty-two years ago)

I am biased, but the Charles Atlas remix record that is coming out on Audraglint this winter is ACE. Sybarite, Magnetophone, Pram, Casino Vs. Japan, the Telescopes, and others completely reworked Worsted Weight. The new studio album is beautiful and sombre, label TBA.

The next American Music Club record sounds to be thunderous if the live versions of the songs are anything to go by. Lable TBA as well.

The new Piano Magic record is a return to form of sorts.

anthony kyle monday (akmonday), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 00:35 (twenty-two years ago)

That Hold Steady record is so great - one of those records whose first line assures you that what follows is gonna kick ass

Matos did the good people in NY hook you up with the full album? wasn't sure if promos were going out yet - either way hurrah!/thanks

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 00:39 (twenty-two years ago)

John Cena's album is going to be produced by some of The Demigodz, isn't it?

(Randy Savage's album's already out, and is as bad as you'd expect. The Cena one could be pretty nice, actually, especially as JAY-Z AND FABOLOUS PHEAR HIM~!)

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 00:39 (twenty-two years ago)

the Joy Zipper album. if it actually comes out.

the surface noise (electricsound), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 01:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Goddman it, I want that Hold Steady album something awwwwwful.

I am excited about the Walkmen album "Bows and Arrows" too. All of the new songs they were playing live sounded so cool and '50s-ish and catchy as hell.

Ben Boyer (Ben Boyer), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 01:07 (twenty-two years ago)

does John know that The Mountain Goats have been added to the playlist on BBC 6 Music this week

DJ Martian (djmartian), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 01:26 (twenty-two years ago)

with Blonde Redhead now on their roster and MGs going strong, 4AD are looking like a world class label once more

the surface noise (electricsound), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 01:29 (twenty-two years ago)

thanks DJ Martian! unfortunately the link for info on the MG's seems to link to info about British Sea Power. Or perhaps fortunately

esoj I kiss your specs

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 01:54 (twenty-two years ago)

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 02:11 (twenty-two years ago)

the new palomar is really good... though their record label just went kaput.

phil-two (phil-two), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 05:12 (twenty-two years ago)

I thought Tallahasse was a one-off for 4ad, the next one is coming out on 4ad as well? That is great news for both you and the label.

anthony kyle monday (akmonday), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 06:31 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm currently listening to the Aluminum Group's More Happyness, slated for Jan. or Feb., I think. It is very nice so far.

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 07:02 (twenty-two years ago)

the surface noise (electricsound), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 08:33 (twenty-two years ago)

cool..I didn't even know Bark Psychosis was still around.

cs appleby, Tuesday, 18 November 2003 11:52 (twenty-two years ago)

I'd like to say Charizma on Stonesthrow records. It should have been released 11 years ago or more. Its release is probably going to herald the daisy age of hip-hop once more. About fuckin time.

cs appleby, Tuesday, 18 November 2003 11:55 (twenty-two years ago)

Will Oldham is releasing an album of covers of his own songs at some point, autumn/fall I seem to remember. I'm waaaaay excited. There's a new boards of canada LP out early in the year too.

neil simpson (neil simpson), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 12:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Based on the four songs from Codename Dustsucker that have leaked, I'm very excited about the new Bark Psychosis.

Also, joshd, there are a couple of tracks from the MF Doom release on soulseek, as well as a 12" released by Madvillain with songs that are not on the album. The Madvillian album has been online for like 8 or 9 months.

Jonathan (Jonathan), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 12:38 (twenty-two years ago)

When's the new Blonde Redhead supposed to drop?

Raymond Cummings (Raymond Cummings), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 12:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Three that I have heard that are fantastic: Automato, Oneida, Hella

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 13:16 (twenty-two years ago)

Sean Paul, Dutty Rock

mentalist (mentalist), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 13:35 (twenty-two years ago)

Beck new album! Tracks produced by afforementioned Dan the Automator as well as TIMBALAND!?!

nickalicious (nickalicious), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 13:42 (twenty-two years ago)

McLusky fo'shizzle. And I'm going to totally ignore the title of this thread by mentioning the Jimmy Edgar EP. Crazy, I know.

DJ Mencap (DJ Mencap), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 14:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Joy Zipper's American Whip is ace (and has been on eBay since it was originally pulled a year ago).

I predict that The Von Bondies' Pawn Shoppe Heart will do extremely good business in 2004, but quite apart from that it's actually very very good indeed.

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 16:22 (twenty-two years ago)

My most anticipated releases for 2004 are probably either N*E*R*D or Fiona Apple, although I haven't heard anything from either of these yet.

billstevejim, Tuesday, 18 November 2003 20:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Everybody should vote for the Mountain Goats on the 6music playlist poll. Currently only 4%, let's make it 80%+.

Billy Dods (Billy Dods), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 20:27 (twenty-two years ago)

keep it up people, we're already at 13%

Mountain Goats 18 % now - beating off big NME type bands like the Strokes

DJ Martian (djmartian), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 21:40 (twenty-two years ago)

nickalicious (nickalicious), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 21:49 (twenty-two years ago)

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 07:24 (twenty-two years ago)

Is no-one else out there dead excited at the prospect of a new Blue Orchids album out in January?

To quote the blurb:
MYSTIC BUD (LTMCD 23??): Recorded in 2003, the third studio album from Blue Orchids sees mainman Martin Bramah joined by Stuart Kennedy, Alastair Murphy, Charlotte Bill and Bud Umu. Full tracklist: Shining Brow, Soul Stuff, Angel of the Loop, Freak Show, Black Peg's Son, The Secret of the Sacred Orchid, Bemused, Earthling, Sub Rosa and Sugar Sugar.

NickB (NickB), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 12:33 (twenty-two years ago)

one month passes...
Revive!

Good and/or great:
Mountain Goats - We Shall All Be Healed
Air - Walkie Talkie
Moonbabies - The Orange Billboard
Poster Children - No More Songs About Sleep and Fire

Bad and/or unforgivable:
Liars - They Were Wrong So We Drowned

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Thursday, 1 January 2004 02:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Do mini-albums count? If so the Lynskey's The Complete Guide to Space Folk. Nearly finished mixing the bastard.

Lynskey (Lynskey), Thursday, 1 January 2004 02:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Lambchop & Bark Psychosis.

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Thursday, 1 January 2004 09:03 (twenty-two years ago)

Isn't it amazing how quickly I've already forgotten about that Walkmen album? New category!

Mediocre and/or forgettable:
The Walkmen - Bows and Arrows

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Thursday, 1 January 2004 16:32 (twenty-two years ago)

The Electrelane album is really good.

Eagerly anticipated - Fiona Apple, MC Shystie, PJ Harvey.

Also, I really really want the Courtney Love album to kick my ass and am slightly scared it won't.

The Lex (The Lex), Thursday, 1 January 2004 17:03 (twenty-two years ago)

Xiu Xiu's "Fabulous Muscles" bests all of the albums thus mentioned (the ones that have already leaked/been released, anyway).

Simon H., Sunday, 11 January 2004 22:48 (twenty-two years ago)

i listened to the air album yesterday, awful. it might be an improvement over the last one but that's not saying much.

I have come to loathe James Taylor with every fiber of my being yet am very fond of Talkie Walkie so you are so super-wrong

nate detritus (natedetritus), Monday, 12 January 2004 00:20 (twenty-two years ago)

EVEN better that 10,000 Khz Legend? bbbbbut that sounds amazing!

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Monday, 12 January 2004 00:24 (twenty-two years ago)

The Liars album is v. v. good - much better than They Threw Us In A Trench...

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Monday, 12 January 2004 03:31 (twenty-two years ago)

I heard that the new Telefon Tel Aviv is really disappointing (from a friend who has it). :(

Jordan (Jordan), Monday, 12 January 2004 03:37 (twenty-two years ago)

The problem with the new Air is that they obviously got too fond of Japan (the country, not whatever else might have that name). It's happened to a lot of people.

Dan I. (Dan I.), Monday, 12 January 2004 04:02 (twenty-two years ago)

See ILX for examples...

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Monday, 12 January 2004 04:03 (twenty-two years ago)

Prediction: The Liars album will be one of the great dividers this year.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Monday, 12 January 2004 04:07 (twenty-two years ago)

I already have heard it and quite like it, so count me in on that side!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 12 January 2004 04:09 (twenty-two years ago)

what Milo said re: Liars. Or maybe it's because my expectations were low from the last time out.

don weiner, Monday, 12 January 2004 04:28 (twenty-two years ago)

I love the Air album. I dismissed the Liars record after one listen, but I'm going to return to it based on FAPmendations.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Monday, 12 January 2004 06:11 (twenty-two years ago)

I very much like what I have heard so far of Talkie Walkie, but am I the only person in the world that thinks 10,000 khz Legend was absolutely fantastic?

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Monday, 12 January 2004 06:20 (twenty-two years ago)

I really love the Telefon Tel Aviv album. The thing with a few downtempo artists, like Telefon, Savath and Savalas and Isan, is that their new releases include vocals, unlike their previous output. I'm not a big fan of the Savath album and haven't heard the Isan, but aside from one track on the Telefon album, I think the vocals enhance the songs. Great production.

I also love the new Air album.

What I've heard of the Lambchop albums I like, but does anyone else find it odd that there's so many instrumental tracks on Aw C'mon?

Jonathan (Jonathan), Monday, 12 January 2004 14:45 (twenty-two years ago)

New Air bored me. They've never returned to the strong melodies of the first LP.

The new Liars I really like.

Not yet sold on this new Hella.
