Drowning in a pit of instrumentals...

Lately, i dont know whats up. I havent been able to take out GSYBE's F#A# out of my car stereo, and my turntable is only Explosions in the Sky or A Silver Mt Zion. My winamp playlist is currently all Do Make Say Think and GSYBE live tracks. I have a problem.

I think my girlfriend is going to bitch-slap me if i keep this up.

The cause of all this, i think, is because i had been looking forward to the new Ryan Adams album(s)...and they turned out to be completely bunk.

I guess im pretty pissed at music right now. Any suggestions?
(Please no completely obscure bands)

Top 100 instrumentals!

Featuring members of DMST (mainly its DMST on Cram's trip) is Gesundheit. If you ever see the band live just ask the guy in leather pants for a copy.

Also on an angry noise trip w/ vocals is Lullabye Arkestra featuring... you guessed, more various DMST members.

Neither of those bands are for everyone.
Simillar to GYBE but minus the attichude and with vocals is Picastro from Toronto. They finally got an album out on Pher [sp?] records called daaaaaaaaam, I forget, "Red Your Blues" or something. I'll get back to that one.

How about some Japanese bands?

Rockist Scientist, Tuesday, 18 November 2003 00:47 (twenty-one years ago)

Pehr records, and it is indeed called Red Your Blues the AMG review is by MC Crudders. I seriously don't know whats up with the band review though (not by stinkypants).

oops (Oops), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 00:50 (twenty-one years ago)

Are you asking for things with vocals or without (or doesn't it matter)? I can't tell if you wanted to be rescued from instrumental music, or you want more of it.

Rockist Scientist, Tuesday, 18 November 2003 00:51 (twenty-one years ago)

Vocals are only good as samples! Aww yea!

Andrew (enneff), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 01:05 (twenty-one years ago)

Sounds like you need more records that don't get filed in the rock section. There are whole genres where lack of vocals is viewed as neither an oddity not a liability.

OK, wee snark aside...Miles Davis (seconding Matt), Giacinto Scelsi, Ganelin Trio, Gamelan music, Ravi Shankar, Hildegard Von Bingen, Gyorgi Ligeti, Master Musicians of Jajouka, Steve Reich, Sun Ra, Annbjorg Lien, Roger Doyle, The Shadows, Duke Ellington, Biota. There's a start for some more instrumental stuff.

If, as Rocket mentions, you actually want to be rescued from instrumental music, well, go the other way and delve into doo-wop, Russian choral music, Oum Kalsoum , Veena Sahasrabudde, Mbuti pygmy music, Tuvan or Tibetan overtone singing, Balinese monkey chants, Julie London.

Dig dig dig dig dig.

Yeah,

Instrumentals are too white. You should listen to more hip-hop.

King Tubby.

Rockist Scientist, Tuesday, 18 November 2003 05:07 (twenty-one years ago)

(I want King Tubby to meet Oum Kalthoum in the Great Pyramids.)

Herbstmute (Wintermute), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 23:42 (twenty-one years ago)

No Neck Blues Band, Jackie O Motherfucker, Sunburned Hand Of The Man, Prurient, Kites.

and seriously, just listening to the white album fixes everything.

"i had been looking forward to the new Ryan Adams album(s)"

I've been there, lessons have been learned. Never trust a musician whose name rhymes with "ion had 'ems"
