'ARTHUR RUSSELL made some of New York's most enduring dance records. Not that you'd know it: the classically trained cellist, who occasionally jammed with Allen Ginsberg and nearly joined Talking Heads, kept out of the limelight. The records, however, speak for themselves. 'Cavern' (famously sampled on Grandmaster Flash's 'The Message'), 'Go Bang!' and 'Is it all over My Face?' are much-sampled blueprints from the period where dance music and punk first met. Here, rare tracks such as 'Cornbelt' sit next to the hits, their brilliance only accentuated by Russell, who died in 1992, and his soothing, hypnotic voice. Magic that continues to reach out to modern New York - say thank you, The Rapture.'
Get the impression the reviewer hadn't really heard it. Also, was Authur Russel involved in 'Cavern' - not sure myself. Talking of Liquid Liquid - does anyone know if the late 90s comp is still available in the UK??
― Robin Goad (rgoad), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 16:24 (twenty-two years ago)
Is it just me or does using the word brilliance in a review qualify for a higher than 3 stars out of a possible five review?

Who's going to reissue the entire Dinosaur L LP?
Pop Your Funk has never been on CD. I better get one of those "promo" 12"s!
― Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 19:22 (twenty-two years ago)
Seeing this today, is anyone else getting the impression that Arthur Russell and his music risks being turned into one big myth for people to latch onto and, well, make tribute albums to. Granted a lot of the explosion of recent attention has been with stuff like re-issues of previously unavailable material, which is a different story, but does anyone really need an album of Arthur Russell covers?
― EDB, Thursday, 10 December 2009 14:45 (sixteen years ago)
i.e. the disco equivalent of the "cult of dilla"
― EDB, Thursday, 10 December 2009 14:47 (sixteen years ago)
that comp is weak
― moonship journey to baja, Thursday, 10 December 2009 16:56 (sixteen years ago)
but pretty easy to ignore ... i dunno, these kinds of tributes are pointless to people who already know/love Arthur Russell, but, hey, they might get people into him, who might not have heard of him otherwise. Which isn't a bad thing, is it?
― tylerw, Thursday, 10 December 2009 17:07 (sixteen years ago)
Yeah, but with a documentary, a forthcoming book, and full length album and an accompanying remix EP, I'm skeptical that a CD of reputedly weak covers serves much relevance other than to have a convenient selling point (maybe that's a bit strong, but well eventually these become more about the tribute than the Arthur Russell, etc.)
― EDB, Thursday, 10 December 2009 17:46 (sixteen years ago)
the version of "go bang!" featuring peter gordon is quite good. otherwise, a bit of a waste of time really.

I'm confused, this was reissued in 2007 on Traffic. I have a 2LP version, is that incomplete or something?
― sleeve, Monday, 3 October 2011 20:26 (fourteen years ago)
yeah, i thought i had the complete version too.
― tylerw, Monday, 3 October 2011 20:27 (fourteen years ago)
insound is selling another 2LP reissue it says was 2010...
is this really good (if you like arthur russel?)

dinosaur L? yeah, it's amazing.
― tylerw, Monday, 3 October 2011 20:33 (fourteen years ago)
Twenty years after its initial vinyl release, the late Arthur Russell's avant-disco album 24 -> 24 Music is being reissued as a deluxe four-LP box set. Serving as the sole full-length platter recorded under the Dinosaur L banner, the record flung together a haphazard and challenging blend of punk, funk and, occasionally, operatic vocals.
The mega-set is being presented by the Traffic Entertainment Group, who were responsible for the album's 2007 reissue. Sleeping Bag Records originally delivered the disc in 1981.
Similar to the original pressing, which featured hand-screened jackets, the new box will feature a screen job on its outer casing. Inside you'll find four twelve-inches, liner notes from Russell biographer and author of the disco history Love Saves the Day, Tim Lawrence, and a number of unreleased photographs by Janette Beckman. You can watch a clip of the box being prepared down below.
A tracklisting has yet to be revealed, so it's unclear which extra tracks may be paired with the original album's six tunes. Produced and directed by Russell, the Dinosaur L LP had him singing and playing cello, with accompaniment from longtime collaborators and friends Peter Gordon (saxophone) and Peter Zummo (trombone).
The 24 -> 24 Music deluxe box is available October 25 from Traffic Entertainment Group/Sleeping Bag.

it is ten million dollars, right. just i am assuming that the point at which we're describing records as 'screenprinted' and 'will not be repressed' etc it is going to be at least ten million dollars.
i just looked up tell you today to see if that was the kinda thing you could just get a copy of. but it's like $200.
― honest weights, square dealings (schlump), Monday, 3 October 2011 20:40 (fourteen years ago)
i got a bit more re the extras via "get on down" who are involved with this :
"Sleeping Bag Records and Get On Down are proud to present his seminal work, the full length "24-->24 Music" expanded to a deluxe 4 x LP box set. In addition to the music found on the original issue of the album this collection includes rare 12" remixes and edits including the highly coveted "Go Bang! (Walter Gibbons Mix)" and the infamous' rare "You Can't Hold Me Down (Test Pressing Version)." Records 3 and 4 round out the rest of his audio credits with Sleeping Bag and features his alias' and collaborations; Bonzo Goes To Washington, Felix, Sounds Of JHS 126 Brooklyn and Indian Ocean.

I won't buy this (well maybe used in a few years) but that is a nice selection of bonus material.

yes. it's good, but not essential.
― stirmonster, Monday, 3 October 2011 22:51 (fourteen years ago)
well, anything by arthur is essential tbh but it's not the lost holy grail of arthur songs.
― stirmonster, Monday, 3 October 2011 22:52 (fourteen years ago)

― stirmonster, Monday, 3 October 2011 23:06 (fourteen years ago)
This (the box) feels like such a wasted opportunity/excercise in barrel-scraping. Just the same 2 (already pretty poor) reissues from a couple of years ago in a new box - I'm not holding my breath on that test pressing version of You Can't Hold Me Down being all that revelatory. Really wish Steve at Audika was handling this stuff. You just know he could have put together a really great package. From the other AR thread; 'I have some AMAZING live recordings of 24-24 recorded at the Kitchen, and wanted to include them as a third disc on FIRST THOUGHT, but the quality is just a tad on the murky side.'
― Tropical Dandy, Wednesday, 5 October 2011 13:42 (fourteen years ago)
Yeah it's really hard to find a distribution system for material that people would love to be hear but isn't of high enough quality to put on a physical release.
― Badmotorfinger Debate Club (MFB), Wednesday, 5 October 2011 14:07 (fourteen years ago)
he's one of very few artists i try to track down everything by, but i'll be skipping that box.
vinyl reissue of this coming soon(ish)

― stirmonster, Wednesday, 5 October 2011 14:34 (fourteen years ago)
Cool, that's another thing I've never got round to hearing.
― psychedelicatessen (seandalai), Wednesday, 5 October 2011 14:44 (fourteen years ago)
What's the most obscure Arthur appearance? Only in the last year or two did I learn about Elodie Lauten's Death of Don Juan. An amazing "new music" recording from the 80s featuring cello and vocals from Arthur on one track. Zummo's on there too, the whole record is great.
― dan selzer, Wednesday, 5 October 2011 15:12 (fourteen years ago)
Arthur's music is the only thing I really obsessively collect - I've bought 4 Powerman albums now just because he plays a bit of cello on a track or two of each - I'm a total sucker for this type of thing but that box is a bridge too far. That's great news about the Peter Zummo though, beautiful record.
― Tropical Dandy, Wednesday, 5 October 2011 15:15 (fourteen years ago)
Those Powerman records seem to be pretty obscure, The only one I really see listed is Lost Tribe, but he's on One Peace at a Time, Be Your Own Hero and When There Was Time too. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OjwC_ganlN8
― Tropical Dandy, Wednesday, 5 October 2011 15:20 (fourteen years ago)
Well I've never heard of Powerman before so that's got to be one of the more obscure ones.
― psychedelicatessen (seandalai), Wednesday, 5 October 2011 15:39 (fourteen years ago)
There are a couple of things here I've never heard (Thick Pigeon?):
http://www.discogs.com/artist/Arthur+Russell#t=Credits_Instruments-Performance&q=&p=1
― psychedelicatessen (seandalai), Wednesday, 5 October 2011 15:43 (fourteen years ago)
Oh yeah...Thick Pigeon was a NY/Factory/Crepuscule band comprised of scenester Stanton Miranda who went on to record a dance 12", Wheels Over Indian Trails with the Other Two (of New Order) and Carter Burwell, a struggling film composer.
― dan selzer, Wednesday, 5 October 2011 15:51 (fourteen years ago)
He's on Ernie Brooks' solo record Falling They Get You too which features a bunch of the Love Is Overtaking Me era rock/pop Arthur penned tunes.
― Tropical Dandy, Wednesday, 5 October 2011 15:54 (fourteen years ago)
i have all the powerman records too. some of it is great. some of it...???
arthur also plays on jill kroesen's "fay shism blues" which i adore but i'm damned if i can hear him in there.
― stirmonster, Wednesday, 5 October 2011 16:04 (fourteen years ago)
Just came across these lookin for info on Bill's Friends, a group Arthur was in that had a track on From The Kitchen Archives No.3 / Amplified: New Music Meets Rock, 1981-1986 http://tinpanalleylive.com/photographs/images/19840512_bills_friends0016.jpg http://tinpanalleylive.com/photographs/images/19831101_BillsFriends_0003.jpg Had heard about him playing his cello like a guitar like that but hadn't seen it before.
― Tropical Dandy, Wednesday, 5 October 2011 16:34 (fourteen years ago)
love love LOVE the elodie lauten and peter zummo records, but not sure it has much to do with russel being involved (i like a lot of "new music"/pop-minimal stuff tho i guess)

Good catch! Reminds me, Peter Gordon posted a track from the Secret Pastures soundtrack on that page last year. It's got that original version of That Hat that DFA reissued a while back. http://www.discogs.com/Peter-GordonLove-of-Life-Orchestra-Secret-Pastures-ballet-suite/release/2102350 Would love to hear the rest of it.
That's one thing that bothers me a little bit about the reissues of this stuff, cherry picking tracks here and there, I'd love to hear them in their original context where possible. Like the great Bright & Early stuff from Love Is Overtaking Me is supposedly part of a finished album that Sleeping Bag wouldnt put out. Or one of the versions of album Corn that made it to the test pressing stage. But hey beggers can't be choosers.
