JT have you heard any other Tetuzi Akiyama? I've not got hold of "...Boogie" yet (although everyone - EVERYONE - is raving about it) but "Resophonie" was pretty damn hot, and his collab with Sugimoto and Wiget was nice. If Akiyama passes through your town, make sure you go see him: always intriguing, even when not entirely successful. Was lucky enough to see him in duo with Gunter Muller which was quite good.

I love this record! the presentation still kills me. even the weird tape-scrap interludes work with the heavier monolithic boogie trax. it's very far removed from his Onkyo/Off-Site work, and i believe Erstwhile tastemaker Jon Abbey was somewhat unimpressed with it.

That doesn't surprise me - I think the reason I like it so much is because of the heavy boogie / Billy Gibbons flare to it all. It's not at all dull, much more of a psych record than an 'improv' record. Never heard "Resophonie" but i do have another of his records - something with a short title, also starts with an 'R' i belive? - and wasn't nearly as impressed by that one. This one, though, is pretty much unlike anything I've heard a guitar player do in a long time.

not that it needs the justification, but i believe alan licht added it to his "minimal-list". or it was mentioned in some French mag. it's like those weird tape-damaged secocnds of "China Pig" were ground/revved into infinity.

three weeks pass...
"i believe Erstwhile tastemaker Jon Abbey was somewhat unimpressed with it."

tastemaker, huh? ok, I can live with that.

yeah, not my thing, it just seems like a couple of simple ideas alternated by tracks, one of which was explored more deeply by Lamonte Young's Forever Blues Band (which after seeing them live and hearing the record a couple of times, I never need to hear again), and the other one of which isn't that interesting to me. if Roger is talking about "Relator" above, I love that record. different strokes...

anyway, it's not just me, this record was originally submitted to A Bruit Secret, but Michel Henritzi (who's pretty openminded, releasing stuff ranging from Haino to Sugimoto's "compositions") turned it down, so Tetuzi submitted a different record, and gave this one to Idea.

"Was lucky enough to see him in duo with Gunter Muller which was quite good."

yeah, their duo in NYC in February was great, this is going to be an Erst project, hopefully released mid-2004, not recorded yet.

Tetuzi Akiyama is playing his Don't Forget To Boogie Set at Tonic in New York on June 14th! And also a duo with Loren Connors. I haven't been so excited about a show since, well... maybe never.

I highly recommend Akiyama's "Striking Another Match" on Utech Records, if there's any copies left (I think it was a run of 200). Technically speaking, it's a terrible recording, but rather endearingly so. Actually the whole thing is endearing. Endearing, I say!

Do go and see him live if you can. I've seen him do three sets now and each has been entirely different. He also happens to speak very good English and is, beyond dispute, the most talkative man on the planet

Daniel Giraffe (Daniel Giraffe), Thursday, 8 June 2006 06:50 (nineteen years ago)

he played in philly last night & wore the cutest all denim & cowboy hat outfit (and sunglasses). the record store where he played is in an "up & coming" area, and it was awesome to walk several blocks and hear his amps blasting whenever someone opened the door to the shop. thnx for coming all the way from japan to help gentrify philadelphia! :D

killy (baby lenin pin), Tuesday, 13 June 2006 11:35 (nineteen years ago)

he has really enormous hands.
and so off-topic as to almost happen to be on, a friend swears that Billy Gibbons is a huge fan of musique concrete, folks like Luc Ferrari and such.

imbidimts (imbidimts), Tuesday, 13 June 2006 16:31 (nineteen years ago)

Well, that Movin Sidewalks album has a few concrete-like moments on it.

Tripmaker (SDWitzm), Tuesday, 13 June 2006 16:45 (nineteen years ago)

which means the tape splice that melded the bourbon of "Waitin' for the Bus" to the beer of "Jesus Just Left Chicago" is anything but accidental.

Listening to "Boogie Odyssey" on Kaiser/Melton/Akiyama Can't Stop to Boogie on Spotify right now and it is badass.
