nate detritus (natedetritus), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 05:51 (twenty-one years ago)

The LIVE version of "Push"!! You rule! Also (I Keep a) Close Watch, fantastic shit.

Andrew Thames (Andrew Thames), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 05:55 (twenty-one years ago)

holy fucking hell, patrin (and you rule for you inclusion of "new frontier")

bad jode (Jody Beth Rosen), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 05:55 (twenty-one years ago)

Elvis Costello - Shabby Doll
The Clash - Straight To Hell

That's a devastating transition. That + "Senses" into "Wolves, Lower"...the end of this is incredible.

Chris Ott (Chris Ott), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 05:56 (twenty-one years ago)

Oooohh...your year had such delicious electronics!

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 05:59 (twenty-one years ago)

Also really really good Numan, Mission of Burma and Aztec Camera picks

Andrew Thames (Andrew Thames), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 06:00 (twenty-one years ago)

Captain Sensible - Wot
theme from moon patrol
Afrika Bambaataa - Planet Rock

This is the greatest three song sequence ever.

Obligatory complaint: no Dream Syndicate? WTF

Elvis Telecom (Chris Barrus), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 06:00 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, I didn't put in any Dream Syndicate on mine, either! I just wasn't feeling them.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 06:02 (twenty-one years ago)

what he said (see also: the associates; cabaret voltaire)

nate detritus (natedetritus), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 06:03 (twenty-one years ago)

Yet I include late-period Bad Company. The inner workings of my skull are a great mystery.

nate detritus (natedetritus), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 06:03 (twenty-one years ago)

What Associates came out in 82? If it was 'Sulk' I'll be absolutely shocked

Andrew Thames (Andrew Thames), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 06:04 (twenty-one years ago)

Out of curiosity, Nate, did you include the original version of "Temptation" or the superior re-recording?

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 06:05 (twenty-one years ago)

AMG says Sulk is '82.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 06:05 (twenty-one years ago)

I am absolutely shocked

Andrew Thames (Andrew Thames), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 06:06 (twenty-one years ago)

Andrew: Yes. I gave it a listen and I'm like "fuck this noise". Sorry.
Daddino: huh what? re-recording? How the hells am I supposed to tell?

nate detritus (natedetritus), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 06:06 (twenty-one years ago)

I got over it pretty quickly, don't worry

Andrew Thames (Andrew Thames), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 06:07 (twenty-one years ago)

Depends on which album you took it from. Let me try and find some words on this subject...

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 06:07 (twenty-one years ago)

Substance vs the 12"/1981-1982 Ep, isn't it?

Andrew Thames (Andrew Thames), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 06:08 (twenty-one years ago)

This is gonna sound stupid but while I was getting MP3s for this I found a comp called "the indie scene 1982 - the story of british independent music" and hey, "Temptation" was on there. (this version is just under six minutes if that helps.)

nate detritus (natedetritus), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 06:10 (twenty-one years ago)

I tried to get some more country on here like Merle Haggard and Waylon Jennings and what-have-you but their '82 stuff seems to be out of print or something.

nate detritus (natedetritus), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 06:18 (twenty-one years ago)

Ugh. Ah! Daaaaamn, Nate!

Jay Vee (Manon_70), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 06:26 (twenty-one years ago)

Daddino, are you being an elitist UK golden-era prick at my expense? >:(

Chris Ott (Chris Ott), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 06:48 (twenty-one years ago)

Que?

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 06:48 (twenty-one years ago)

(Just 'cos, I got a lot of shit around these parts for suggesting in a Pitchfork review that the re-recording was superior...)

Chris Ott (Chris Ott), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 06:49 (twenty-one years ago)

Sorry, ILM-gotcha-back-up oops there.

Chris Ott (Chris Ott), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 06:50 (twenty-one years ago)

You got shit for that? Huh.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 06:51 (twenty-one years ago)

It is superior. This is common knowledge, no?

Andrew Thames (Andrew Thames), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 06:52 (twenty-one years ago)

Hell, based on the vocals alone!

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 06:53 (twenty-one years ago)

OK, from what I can tell:

1982 single: 6 minutes long, supposedly "inferior"
1987 Substance re-recording: 7 minutes long, supposedly "superior" but it's a rerecording so it is not eligible, case closed

nate detritus (natedetritus), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 06:59 (twenty-one years ago)

There was some brat pack movie in 1986 ("Something Wild"?) that including an edited version of the ORIGINAL "inferior" "Temptation" on it.

I think the Substance version is a re-recording.

I've also got the "inferior" long version on vinyl.

If this becomes an issue, Nate, I can digitize whichever version of the former and latter that you want.

donut bitch (donut), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 07:22 (twenty-one years ago)

Yup

donut bitch (donut), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 07:23 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm pretty sure I've got the original '82 version. Mostly. Yeah.

On the other hand, the version of "Theme From Moon Patrol" I have is only 20 seconds and includes in-game sound effects. >:(

nate detritus (natedetritus), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 07:29 (twenty-one years ago)

(the '82 version of Bill Cosby's "Dentist" is a superior remake!)

nate detritus (natedetritus), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 07:30 (twenty-one years ago)

>1982 single: 6 minutes long, supposedly "inferior"

I am shocked and appalled by this statement. The version of Temptation on Substance is way too 'busy', has a horrible mid-range, tinny sound, and Sumner is struggling in that higher register the whole time. The 'original', long version has that cool bouncy, arpeggiated synth sound, a better vocal performance, and some nice breaks throughout. Although the version I'm thinking of is actually longer than 6 minutes (closer 9 I think? It's the vinyl "1981 - FEP313 - 1982)

Rob Bolton (Rob Bolton), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 09:31 (twenty-one years ago)

I like to hear a singer work for my money

Andrew Thames (Andrew Thames), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 09:36 (twenty-one years ago)

I mean I like them both, it's I (and pretty much everyone I've ever heard give an opinion on the thing) like the remake better. It's also the version I (and most of them I'd guess) heard first, so maybe you can blame it on that.

Andrew Thames (Andrew Thames), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 09:38 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, the 1981-82 version is about 9 minutes long. That's the problem.

Schwingung (Damian), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 12:55 (twenty-one years ago)

I've got the 1982 12" and I'm sure it's not 9 minutes long. But maybe that's just because it's so brilliant or because I haven't listened to it in a while.

N. (nickdastoor), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 13:12 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh OK - I wasn't reading properly. You were talking about the 81-82 minialbum version.

N. (nickdastoor), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 13:14 (twenty-one years ago)

I like to hear a singer work for my money

Fits and starts over here.

Chris Ott (Chris Ott), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 14:10 (twenty-one years ago)

Again, I'd happily mp3 the original edited "Temptation" used in "Something Wild" if it's a big deal...!

donut bitch (donut), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 17:58 (twenty-one years ago)

nononono jeez, it's fine. The version I got was from a comp of music from 1982 so I think it's trustworthy.

nate detritus (natedetritus), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 18:01 (twenty-one years ago)

What if they were TIME TRAVELLERS?

N. (nickdastoor), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 18:04 (twenty-one years ago)

The comp itself wasn't from '82; the music on the comp was

nate detritus (natedetritus), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 18:11 (twenty-one years ago)

(I answered that way too matter-of-fact/straight-man style)

nate detritus (natedetritus), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 18:11 (twenty-one years ago)

Yes, put a silly hat on at least.

N. (nickdastoor), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 18:13 (twenty-one years ago)

But we're all making these comps in the year 2003, so that means EVERYTHING is by default from 2003.

:O

donut bitch (donut), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 18:17 (twenty-one years ago)

Does that mean, like, I can sneak some Ladytron on here?

nate detritus (natedetritus), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 18:19 (twenty-one years ago)

You flipped the bits and amplitudes today = you made it 2003 by default. It's all relative. JOY!

donut bitch (donut), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 18:42 (twenty-one years ago)

Think of it as a more abstract more of "sampling",

donut bitch (donut), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 18:42 (twenty-one years ago)

Think of it as a more abtract form of "sampling"

donut bitch (donut), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 18:42 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh, abtract.

N. (nickdastoor), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 18:46 (twenty-one years ago)

Thsink off tit ass e mure abfract gorm ov "stampling"

donut bitch (donut), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 18:47 (twenty-one years ago)

"tit ass"?

nate detritus (natedetritus), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 18:59 (twenty-one years ago)

Nate passes the typo Rorschach test!

donut bitch (donut), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 19:24 (twenty-one years ago)

how can you all ignore the obvious--the original "Temptation" is on the Retro box set. if you need to re-d/l the thing to be sure, find that one. (I love both and prefer the '87 one, fwiw.)

I go to Mpls in two weeks for Xmas and get my copy then. YES!

M Matos (M Matos), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 19:35 (twenty-one years ago)

(Nate: Vanity 6, "Nasty Girl"!)

M Matos (M Matos), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 19:36 (twenty-one years ago)

You know where to go.

nate detritus (natedetritus), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 20:19 (twenty-one years ago)

(I mean damn, I don't think I can fit anything else on here, and sequencing this thing was a fuckin' NITEMARE)

nate detritus (natedetritus), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 20:21 (twenty-one years ago)

Japanese mystery hardcore band Gauze explained! I want this on a t-shirt:
