CDR700MB -- MINE THE GAP : 1978 - 1982

CDR700MB Go! 1981
CDR700MB Go! 1982

So, again, some (IMHO) good basic process to follow when making suggestions for this thing. I'm only speaking for myself and if you disagree with the below then feel free to do so; as i could very well be overreacting (as i do often). But i figure this will keep the compilation size to something sane, and in case there are weird cases, maybe the below will be a good enough guide to settle such things, z'all i'm saying:

* For each single year, make up a list of ARTISTS -- not songs -- ARTISTS that were left off that year specifically, and choose a song by that artist that was done that year. (Whining about someone choosing the "wrong song" by an artist already used for that year just remains whining and that's that. Sorry. Unless you can prove his/her song choice was incorrectly attributed to that year for some big reason)
For example:
bad "I didn't like DB's Boney M song choice for 1978, so I'm going to submit 'Rasputin' off the same year/album for this Mine The Gap comp to get back at his choice of 'Painterman'" (though I'll grant it was a tough choice)
good "Hey, Matos didn't include that one insane Boney M song in 1980, so here it is...."

* Collect all the lists for each of the years in that half decade, and put it ALL together, and group them by artist -- as surely multiple songs by the same artists will have been submitted.

* Choose ONE song for each artist for each respective artist's list. This is where the fun and bar brawls come in. Who gets to choose which song? I think balancing the years in question should be the biggest priority, followed by just plain popularity.

let's mine.

YES! I'm a bad example!

nate detritus (natedetritus), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 07:42 (twenty-one years ago)

Anyhow:
1978 - Onyx, "Break It Loose (Part 2)"

nate detritus (natedetritus), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 07:43 (twenty-one years ago)

Nate is a baaaaaaaaaad boy. Oh yes, very bad.

I'll start it off:

1979:

Suzi Lane "Harmony" (EEEEEXCELLENT Giorgio Moroder produced disco classic)
'Lectric Funk "Shanghaied" (weird plodding electro disco song about a chinese lady with magical powers)

1980:

Kano "I'm Ready" (mostly known for being sampled by Tag Team.)
Frankie Smith "Double Dutch Bus" (excellent funk classic)

1981:

Gordons "Spik and Span" (seminal post-punk band from NZ)
The Go-Gos "Our Lips are Sealed" (sorry Andy)

donut bitch (donut), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 07:43 (twenty-one years ago)

1980:

Rema Rema "Feedback Song" (very Swans sounding band that would go on to produce members in Adam and the Ants, Wolfgang Press, and Renegade Soundwave)

1981:

British Electric Foundation "A Baby Called Billy" (basically Heaven 17 right after Phil Oakey dumped 'em. This was kinda their "demo" EP. Side 1 was ideas for their first record. Side 2 is disturbing as fuck early Cabaret Voltaire sounding shit. This song is from the brilliant second half)

donut bitch (donut), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 07:47 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh, and one more thing I forgot (again) to add -- don't recommend stuff you can't provide -- ok thanks.

donut bitch (donut), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 07:48 (twenty-one years ago)

("Break It Loose" is readily available on Funk Spectrum 3)

nate detritus (natedetritus), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 07:58 (twenty-one years ago)

I can't stop thinking about the other Onyx when you mention that... ("SLAM!!!.. DUM DADA.. DUM DADA... LET DA BOYS BE BOYS...")

donut bitch (donut), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 08:01 (twenty-one years ago)

ha, this old-skool Onyx is like their polar opposite

nate detritus (natedetritus), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 08:02 (twenty-one years ago)

1982:

Vanity 6 : "Nasty Girl" or "You Drive Me Wild"

donut bitch (donut), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 08:08 (twenty-one years ago)

1979:

The Government "Greetings From The Gutter" (from their debut album "Electric Eye".. weird punk band from Toronto, I think)

donut bitch (donut), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 08:11 (twenty-one years ago)

1981:
Human Hands "Trains vs. Planes"
Wall of Voodoo "Red Light"

kdjfe, Tuesday, 9 December 2003 09:00 (twenty-one years ago)

1978 (to grab stuff from the thread itself):

the Go Betweens "Lee Remick" (or "Karen", i'm easy)

the Victims "Television Addict"

Rolling Stones "Miss you" or something equally good off "Some Girls"

donut bitch (donut), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 16:01 (twenty-one years ago)

1978:

Radio Birdman : something off "Radios Appear" album
(Nate, what's "Burn My Eye '78" from?)

donut bitch (donut), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 16:03 (twenty-one years ago)

Gordons "Spik and Span" (seminal post-punk band from NZ)
The Go-Gos "Our Lips are Sealed" (sorry Andy)

That's alright, db! I considered the Go-Gos. Never heard Gordons but will hunt it down -- same goes for the rest of the suggestions I've not heard.

donut bitch (donut), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 16:13 (twenty-one years ago)

That's alright, db! I considered the Go-Gos. Never heard Gordons but will hunt it down -- same goes for the rest of the suggestions I've not heard.

Well, the whole purpose of the exercise is to save you the hunting ;)
(we're collecting a bunch of stuff between 5 years that were "missed" on those years' comps, respectively, as sort of an addendum/auxiliary CDR comp..) Either way, try to hunt down that Gordons Future Shock EP/First Album CD if you can. Weeeeel worth it.. speaking of which.

1980:

Gordons "Future Shock" or "Adults and Children"

donut bitch (donut), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 16:17 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh, right -- I should try to read more.

Arthur (Arthur), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 16:26 (twenty-one years ago)

"Burn My Eye '78" is from Living Eyes -- which wasn't released until 1981*. What you want is any of the following (added to Radios Appear when it was released outside Australia in '78): "Aloha Steve and Danno", "Non-Stop Girls", "You're Gonna Miss Me" or "Hit Them Again".

*Radio Birdman ca. 1981, then: "455 SD".

nate detritus (natedetritus), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 17:42 (twenty-one years ago)

(and by the way, I didn't mean to insinuate you were whining about the whole Boney M thing, I just transformed that little argument into an example that may have made you look bad, but absolutely no personal feelings or harm were intended at all. It was merely an example.. apologies)

donut bitch (donut), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 17:54 (twenty-one years ago)

Dah? No no no no no, I wasn't all broken up or anything. I was mostly just "Oh he sort of referenced me there. Me respond with joke! It will be sarcastic meta-self-deprecation/pretend offense/pseudo-acknowledgement. Yes."

nate detritus (natedetritus), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 18:00 (twenty-one years ago)

Some omissions:

1978
Peabo Bryson - "Reaching for the Sky"
Chuck Mangione - "Feel So Good"

1979
Spyro Gyra - "Morning Dance"
Frank Mills - "Music Box Dancer"*

1980
George Benson - "Give Me the Night"

1981
Grover Washington, Jr. w/ Bill Withers - "Just the Two of Us"
Al Jarreau - "We're In This Love Together"

1982
Herb Alpert - "Route 101"
George Benson - "Turn Your Love Around"
Al Jarreau - "Mornin'"

*Arthur, how could you forget this one?

Broheems (diamond), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 18:30 (twenty-one years ago)

I mentioned the first two artists below already on Nate's 1979 thread, now with suggested songs added. The third suggestion is kinda obligatory for me.

1979:
Gerry Rafferty - 'Get It Right Next Time'
Supertramp - 'Breakfast In America'
A Certain Ratio - 'All Night Party' (either the single version or the Peel Session version available on Early, doesn't matter)

Jeff W (zebedee), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 18:35 (twenty-one years ago)

1980:

Yarbrough & Peoples "Don't Stop The Music"

donut bitch (donut), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 18:39 (twenty-one years ago)

donut bitch (donut), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 18:55 (twenty-one years ago)

oh, snap:

1981
Donnie Iris - "Ah! Leah!"

Broheems (diamond), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 18:55 (twenty-one years ago)

donut bitch are you trying to say that all gay people are illiterate replicants?

fiddo centington (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 18:56 (twenty-one years ago)

*ducks*

fiddo centington (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 18:56 (twenty-one years ago)

I wish!

Arthur (Arthur), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 18:56 (twenty-one years ago)

I have so many ways I can respond, but I will lose the few friends I have.

OK, "original crockery destroyed". Besides sounding like a Fall or U.S. Maple song title, what does this mean? I even googled for this.

donut bitch (donut), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 18:58 (twenty-one years ago)

haha i just meant obsessive compulsive disorder!

fiddo centington (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 18:59 (twenty-one years ago)

Gay replicants? Gives new meaning to the term "batty boy"...

nate detritus (natedetritus), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 19:01 (twenty-one years ago)

Like, what else am I supposed to think about? Balancing my check book or shit like that? Getting my life in order? What, are you treating like a RAT IN A CAGE?

donut bitch (donut), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 19:02 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh, gay illiterate replicants, that reminds me...

1980
Alice Cooper-Clones (We're All)

Arthur (Arthur), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 19:02 (twenty-one years ago)

fiddo centington (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 19:03 (twenty-one years ago)

donut bitch (donut), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 19:10 (twenty-one years ago)

And let me tell ya! Destroying original crockery is FUCKING HELLA FUN!

donut bitch (donut), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 19:11 (twenty-one years ago)

you sure are touchy lately.

fiddo centington (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 19:14 (twenty-one years ago)

Speaking of more gay illerate replicants
np: Barry McGuire "Cosmic Cowboy"

"(Cow-Boy Of the Light... Shooting Rainbows Through the Night)
AAAW YEAH, THERE'S A COSMIC COWBOY, AND HE RIDES A STARRY RANGE.
HE'S A SUPERNATURAL PLOWBOY. HE IS DRESSED UP KINDA STRANGE..."

donut bitch (donut), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 19:15 (twenty-one years ago)

touche not touchy...

(seriously, jess, my silly mood today is just coming off as "touchy" thanks to the magic of online forums)

donut bitch (donut), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 19:17 (twenty-one years ago)

(also, I'm still coming off an unusually high dose of Robitussin trying to rid myself of an all-night insidious cough resulting from a cold relapse.)

donut bitch (donut), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 19:21 (twenty-one years ago)

But seriously, I had no idea what "ocd" meant when you first brought it up. Consider it a big brainfart. But, I mean for a guy who's covered the latter half of the 90s in CDR700MB mp3 comps, accusations of ocd could come off as either a) sarcasticly self-deprecating, or b) hypocritical. I'm sure it was "a)" in your case, but I wasn't too sure at first.

donut bitch (donut), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 19:26 (twenty-one years ago)

we're doing this in public?

M Matos (M Matos), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 19:37 (twenty-one years ago)

Um, well, it was kind of expensive and difficult to organize a house party for this, you know...

???

donut bitch (donut), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 19:39 (twenty-one years ago)

I kiss you all back. DB, is that song any good? I could add it to my Gay Novelty C90. I've only got about 6 songs so far, I need more. Broheems, you're right, quel embarras!

Arthur (Arthur), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 19:55 (twenty-one years ago)

um, well, considering that none of the others have been made by committee I'm just bewildered that this one is apparently going to be.

M Matos (M Matos), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 19:55 (twenty-one years ago)

I thought that was the whole point, to do the opposite of internalization. So that others could get a say.

If I was wrong, we can do yet another round of assigning people to the MINE THE GAP comps and forsake the thread.. but then I would forsee the same complaints about these comps that certain single year Go! discs have gotten. and see yet more "protest" comps arise. But you did originally come up with the idea in its most formal base, so it's up to you.

donut bitch (donut), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 20:14 (twenty-one years ago)

Arthur, you NEED this song for a Gay Novelty C90, even if the song originally intended anything but. (and you know where to grab it) I assume you have "C.B. Savage", right?

donut bitch (donut), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 20:16 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, I'll have to look around for it, thanks. I have "C.B. Savage", "Super Thanks for Asking", quite a few Frogs songs, some Teddy & Darry. Maybe I'll put them all a folder somewhere one of these days.

Arthur (Arthur), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 20:25 (twenty-one years ago)

no, I get it now, I just wasn't sure what the idea was at first. never mind then.

M Matos (M Matos), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 20:27 (twenty-one years ago)

(pssss, Arthur, it's in a certain share somewhere that you should know about under "1978")

donut bitch (donut), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 20:29 (twenty-one years ago)

I could add it to my Gay Novelty C90. I've only got about 6 songs so far, I need more.

Josie Cotton - "Johnny Are You Queer?"

Elvis Telecom (Chris Barrus), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 20:30 (twenty-one years ago)

I will volunteer to organize the final product, and if it comes down to weeding out songs or deciding which song from an artist to choose, then I'll allow feedback from those who still care and stick around the thread, to a point. Otherwise, I figure the person working hardest on this should get to make the most decisions.. So unless someone protests the idea of myself or you, Matos, for organizing this particular one, then I think this still goes along what we originally intended.

HOWEVER for example, I'm totally unfamiliar with Peabo Bryson, and would be curious as hell what his 1978 contribution was. Closing the contributors may have not made that possible. (I know you have R&B knowledge up the wazoo, Matos, but what if my co-conspirator theoretically didn't?)

donut bitch (donut), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 20:34 (twenty-one years ago)

(psssst, imagine if the assigned MINE THE GAP 1993-1997 conspirators had no knowledge or care for jungle.)

donut bitch (donut), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 20:36 (twenty-one years ago)

Re: "Cosmic Cowboy". What an incredible song! It's "Chestnut Mare" by way of "Width of a Circle"!

Arthur (Arthur), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 21:12 (twenty-one years ago)

1978
Bill Withers - "Lovely Day"
Little River Band - "Reminiscing"

1980
Soft Boys - "Kingdom of Love" (or hell anything off Underwater Moonlight)
Sylvia Striplin - "You Can't Turn Me Away"

1981
Juice Newton - "Queen of Hearts"
Climax Blues Band - "I Love You"
Luther Vandross - "Never Too Much"

1982
Michael McDonald - "I Keep Forgettin'"

db, I've only got the first two Peabo albums, but I like them quite a bit. I mean, it's definitely getting into Quiet Storm territory but I have a sweet tooth for that stuff. I can burn the cut I listed, for consideration by the group. I mean all of the things I'm listing correspond to the time I really fell in love with the radio. My parents listened to a station that played lots of this lite-jazz/r&b crossover stuff so it's really ingrained. It really was a kind of golden age for that kind of stuff, though.

Broheems (diamond), Wednesday, 10 December 2003 00:20 (twenty-one years ago)

Bill Withers - "Lovely Day"

That made it onto my '77.

nate detritus (natedetritus), Wednesday, 10 December 2003 01:26 (twenty-one years ago)

ah, ok! I should have checked that. It looks like it might have been one of those end-of-year deals.

Broheems (diamond), Wednesday, 10 December 2003 01:38 (twenty-one years ago)

1981:

Grauzone "Eisbar"

this darker new wave/punk band from Germany that contributed a track to this "dance/new wave" vinyl comp from 1981 which also features Kraftwerk with a couple of German sung versions of "Computer World" songs.. anyway "Eisbar" practically invented the Pixies! but with ROBOTS! This song roolz the roozt

1982:

The Visible Targets "Mechanical Man".

I found this weird EP by said band in the cut out bins last night from this Olympia/Seattle area new wave band that had obvious Romeo Void/Devo/Rough Trade influences that was recorded by Steve Fisk.

Anyway, more obscure shit to follow for the comp.

donut bitch (donut), Thursday, 11 December 2003 21:54 (twenty-one years ago)

(ahem, I should have really said WEST Germany in the above item, given, you know, the year and all)

donut bitch (donut), Thursday, 11 December 2003 21:55 (twenty-one years ago)

Hahahahaa, just found this blog entry with the following:

"...But there are good discoveries, and one that pleased me greatly tonight was finally going through a huge envelope of photos, newspaper clippings, ads, and posters that I'd left at someone's house since 1982. I found all the posters I did for a band called The Visible Targets. The Targets were three sisters and a male friend, all from Yakima, who wrote their own original music and were very popular in Seattle while they were together. Just looking through the stuff reminded me of lots of youthful hoopla. The late 70's and early 80's were so much fun! New Wave, skinny ties, ankle boots, shaggy bangs teased and sprayed into spikes, and peppy, energetic music. I thought it was so wonderful when college radio finally switched over from dirgy, anthemic stadium rock to the short, sassy, dance-pop at the end of the 70's. I still like lots of it, too, especially the Fixx, Elvis Costello, Devo, and Split Enz... "

donut bitch (donut), Thursday, 11 December 2003 21:59 (twenty-one years ago)

Hey, The Fixx! That reminds me...

1982
The Fixx - "Red Skies"

Broheems (diamond), Thursday, 11 December 2003 22:00 (twenty-one years ago)

1982: Laurie Anderson's Big Science ("O Superman" is the obv. choice, I guess)
