Scout Niblett: is it right to keep her a secret?

Scout Niblett for me is one of the most incredible musicians on the planet. However, i was at her York gig the other night and she was selling her own merchandise after the show and i was thinking that she probably deserves to have someone to do that for her, except i have that strange possesive feeling that you get with your favourite alt acts where you dont want them ever to make the cover of NME or ever to be played on the radio, even though a world where Scout Niblett gets a Christmas number 1 would clearly signify the end of everything bad in the world. Is that strange desire to keep beautiful artists on the breadline acceptable or should we just get over it?

we should just get over it. keep her on the breadline, wtf?! i'm sure she enjoys being one of your favourite alt acts but daresay she'd prefer to be making money.....?

I'm inclined to agree.

I think "get over it" is unequivocally the right answer here, though fortunately for you Scout will be 'on the breadline' for quite some time yet, in all likelihood...

(nb I like Scout)

It's natural to want to feel superior and like you have a nice secret that other people are not clued in enough to know or understand. Well, I'm sort of like that anyway. I recognize it's a dumb impulse, and I hardly follow it anyway, because I'm very evangelistic about artists I appreciate.

Still, I mean, it's nice to go see your favorite performer and not have to pay ungodly ticket prices and brave insane amounts of unruly showgoers. and then have an excuse to chat with them when you buy a cd out of a cardboard box.

I'd like them to make lots of money though, which is why I pimp out music to everyone I know. It's a bitch trying to make a living on art.

Blood and sparkles (bloodandsparkles), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 20:47 (twenty-one years ago)

also, you want to be sure they don't achieve success by dumbing their sound down. the more attractive they are physically, the more i expect them to be lured by the glitz mill. but even guided by voices and jesus and mary chain dumbed their sound down to an extent.

she's on too pure, she must not be very good.

keith m (keithmcl), Wednesday, 10 December 2003 02:18 (twenty-one years ago)

Wait, there is really an artist called Scout Niblett!?!?! I thought this was a joke. What a terrible name! Good lord.

Scout Niblett: the *WORST MUSIC* in the WORLD.....

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 10 December 2003 02:30 (twenty-one years ago)

I like Scout too. (On a side bar, I'll be at her Cube gig Mon 15th if anyone FAP) It was a strange evolution, with the first couple of times I saw her leaving me slightly nonplussed and even once I decided I liked her with me swearing I'd never play the records at home so not buying them.

Needless to say, I now have them all. Although I don't think "I Am" is very good.

But in the end I agree with Blood & Sparkles. How can you not evangelise about your favourite acts? Who wouldn't want to live in a world where Danielson Famile could have #1 singles?

aldo_cowpat (aldo_cowpat), Wednesday, 10 December 2003 09:11 (twenty-one years ago)

On the artist, I have only heard one song by her, which I like, but it's from her first album. I was going to check her out when she was in town but I forgot what day it was on and missed it. A friend told me that the first album is better than I Am. This is just about the extent of my knowledge. But I like woeful sounding girl music, or something. (Point and laugh!)

The song ('miss my lion') does remind me of Cat Power but I guess that doesn't bother me greatly at this point. I like the guitar and the minimal sound of it. If I liked the rest of her album as much as that then I'd probably be pleased with it.

Blood and sparkles (bloodandsparkles), Wednesday, 10 December 2003 09:30 (twenty-one years ago)

Ah Danielson Famile! now there is another fantastic band. I wasnt too impressed with the Bro Danielson Christmas 7" but nevermind. I get the impression they are on the verge of a hype explosion.

Flotsam of the Fishfolk (Flotsam of the Fishfolk), Wednesday, 10 December 2003 12:20 (twenty-one years ago)

I've only overheard one song playing and need to investigate more - but first thought was "sounds good", then "is this like Cat Power but without the baggage?"

even Scout Niblett might get a chuckle out of Alex in NYC's infamous thread though. & you know what they say about any publicity

scout niblett sucks dick on the moon

I think this is my new favorite put-down.

Prude (Prude), Thursday, 11 December 2003 22:15 (twenty-one years ago)

I saw Scout Niblett supporting Daniel Johnston a few months ago. She was good fun - esp. when she was playing the drums

Andrew L (Andrew L), Friday, 12 December 2003 00:00 (twenty-one years ago)

is she retarded or something?

Dean Gulberry (deangulberry), Friday, 12 December 2003 00:10 (twenty-one years ago)

From what I've heard of her, she sucks. God I hate this crap.

Andrew (enneff), Friday, 12 December 2003 00:48 (twenty-one years ago)

Her 'I Conjure Series' is the only one of hers I don't like. But it's like 10 mins. long at the most, so why all the big fuss?
