2004: My Year Of Jandek

I already have five Jandek CDs: Six And Six, The Rocks Crumble, Interstellar Discussion, Lost Cause and The Beginning.

On Monday, though (before the Khanate/Orthrelm show at Tonic), I'm planning on selling a whole bunch of CDs at Kim's, and I'm gonna try and pick up 10 more Jandek CDs.

Going by the descriptions on the Jandek website, I've chosen the following:

The Gone Wait (brand new one, just out this week!)
Chair Beside A Window
Foreign Keys
Telegraph Melts
Modern Dances
You Walk Alone
I Threw You Away
The Humility Of Pain
The Place
Glad To Get Away

Have I chosen wisely? Are there others I should consider instead of the ones listed?

Phil Freeman (Phil Freeman), Sunday, 14 December 2003 01:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Haha, I remember him. I got really interested in him for a while, but eventually I came to the conclusion that I liked him for the novelty, which made me no better than a Darkness fan. Plus, I'm not paying good money for CDs by some guy playing a massive joke on the world - I'd be no better than a Darkness f- oh, I said that...

Stupid (Stupid), Sunday, 14 December 2003 01:56 (twenty-two years ago)

but his cd's are so cheap! that's why everyone owns 20 of them.

scott seward, Sunday, 14 December 2003 02:01 (twenty-two years ago)

Jandek: POX
Jandek
RFI: Jandek
Clearly, the best Jandek song is
unlistenable and pretentious (part 1): Jandek

I like "You Walk Alone"

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Sunday, 14 December 2003 02:20 (twenty-two years ago)

Foreign Keys is rad, but you NEED Blue Corpse.

ian johnsooon, Sunday, 14 December 2003 04:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Jandek? Never heard of him.

I second the Blue Corpse mention.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 14 December 2003 04:45 (twenty-two years ago)

third

the surface noise (electricsound), Sunday, 14 December 2003 04:55 (twenty-two years ago)

*cough*

Blue Corpse has been sitting on my shelf since I purchased it in July/August and I still haven't played it...

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Sunday, 14 December 2003 06:34 (twenty-two years ago)

You Walk Alone, by a country mile. Blue Corpse also great - and Graven Image is one of his most underrated records. They're all good, for $8, you really can't lose on any of them.

I'm so sick of the Darkness hatred.

ROGER ADULTERY, Sunday, 14 December 2003 07:00 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm not! More please.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 14 December 2003 07:06 (twenty-two years ago)

let's not - this thread is too good to ruin. BUT...if you hate The Darkness you have no soul. C'mon, Ned, you really don't like "Friday Night?" "Get Your Hands Offa My Woman?"

roger adultery (roger adultery), Sunday, 14 December 2003 07:08 (twenty-two years ago)

Those are good choices, Phil, but I recommend that you also include his first record, Ready For The House.

Matthew Perpetua (Matthew Perpetua), Sunday, 14 December 2003 23:07 (twenty-two years ago)

also Modern Dances

the surface noise (electricsound), Sunday, 14 December 2003 23:09 (twenty-two years ago)

(oh that's on the list, silly me)

the surface noise (electricsound), Sunday, 14 December 2003 23:09 (twenty-two years ago)

hey apparently the newie is double bass and vocal, sounds really interesting, has anyone heard it?

the surface noise (electricsound), Sunday, 14 December 2003 23:10 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm downloading the new one right now. Oh, and the three before it. I haven't been up on Jandek lately, and as it turns out, I missed FOUR ALBUMS! It seems like only yesterday that I was feeling deeply creeped out by Worthless Recluse...

Matthew Perpetua (Matthew Perpetua), Sunday, 14 December 2003 23:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Here's a subthread:

I have become very, very keenly interested in Jandek this year, after reading some articles online etc....I like thinking about Jandek, it's such a fascinating little mystery story....However, I can't bring myself to actually buy or listen to him, because I'm half worried that hearing it will ruin the idea I have of what he must sound like in my head.

So, should I stay a Jandek virgin or just go ahead and quit being a freak and buy an album already??

Matt Helgeson (Matt Helgeson), Sunday, 14 December 2003 23:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Okay, I've heard "I Went To Hell" - it's really good! I've never heard anything quite like it. It's a pretty decent sounding recording for Jandek, and his voice sounds more crisp and clean than usual. He's accompanied by some rumbling bass that is eerily remisiscent of the sounds the furnace in my basement makes. It's a very "basement" kind of record.

Matthew Perpetua (Matthew Perpetua), Sunday, 14 December 2003 23:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Matt, you should definitely listen to it. I was introduced to Jandek in a similar way, but I found that actually hearing the records made the guy even more mysterious and confounding. The more you hear the records and the several changes he's gone through over the years, it becomes clear that he's a very singular and special artist, making his refusal to engage with the world that much more interesting and odd.

Matthew Perpetua (Matthew Perpetua), Sunday, 14 December 2003 23:31 (twenty-two years ago)

C'mon, Ned, you really don't like "Friday Night?" "Get Your Hands Offa My Woman?"

I have Poison, I have Queen, I have Sweet, I have Slade (among many other things)...I need the Darkness? Uh, no (especially having heard them and thought, "Ya know, Pretty Boy Floyd did have something!"). Death to zealots proclaiming what is best for my soul, religious or otherwise!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 14 December 2003 23:50 (twenty-two years ago)

The Forced Exposure write-up of the new album makes it sound terrifying (but mainly because I'm imagining the man on the Jandek album covers with a fake arrow through his head saying "EXCUUUUUUUUUSE ME!"

JANDEK: The Gone Wait CD (COR 0773). 35th Jandek album. "The Gone
Wait" was a track on 1993's The Twelvth Apostle album, now it's an
album title. This has happened before, and will happen again. Five
tracks, good titles: "I Went To Hell", "I See The Open Door", "I Was
A King", "I Just Might Go Now", "I Found The Right Change". Cover
photos features a continuation of the Cork window shopping theme that
has developed through the 770 series of Corwood releases. This time:
sale pricing. Musically, a new style: acoustic guitar and electric
bass duoes, with Jandek's vocals teetering into almost-Steve Martin
territory. $7.00

i worry that janky is starting to get aware of his growing cult

the surface noise (electricsound), Monday, 15 December 2003 01:25 (twenty-two years ago)

Um, 'starting'?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 15 December 2003 01:29 (twenty-two years ago)

it would just make me sad to think he was starting to pander to his fanbase, as it were. not that it would be easy to tell.

the surface noise (electricsound), Monday, 15 December 2003 01:30 (twenty-two years ago)

The amount of self-awareness of his situation surely had to be obvious to him many years back...

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 15 December 2003 01:32 (twenty-two years ago)

it has to have been -- he's been in contact with the "press" of alternaland for at least 2 decades. he's more than aware of his audience and always has been.

jack cole (jackcole), Monday, 15 December 2003 01:36 (twenty-two years ago)

If you want to get a glimpse of Jandek's sound just watch the trailers at http://www.jandekoncorwood.com/

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Monday, 15 December 2003 02:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Hey Phil: I will agree that you definitely need "Ready for the House."

Douglas (Douglas), Monday, 15 December 2003 08:20 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't think it's exactly a bad thing that Jandek is somewhat aware of his audience. Just because he is pretty obviously aware that an audience exists at all (as opposed to the 80s and early 90s when he probably had no good way of knowing how many people were interested in his work), it doesn't mean that he's "pandering" to them. Given his last stretch of records, I can't even begin to imagine what that pandering could be. Those spoken-word records were some of the most difficult and off-putting records I've ever encountered. They seem designed almost to alienate whatever audience he had. The newer post-spoken word records sound a bit more confident - maybe that's to do with his awareness of the audience, I don't know. I think it's possible that he's working harder now, perhaps because he now knows that his work isn't falling on deaf ears.

I think that it's awfully patronizing to fret over his awareness of his audience, because it treats him like more of a reclusive freak than as a serious artist. I definitely consider Jandek a serious artist.

Matthew Perpetua (Matthew Perpetua), Monday, 15 December 2003 14:28 (twenty-two years ago)

If anyone is interested in hearing a track from The Gone Wait, I've got an mp3 of one right here. It's not exactly pleasurable, but it is very interesting and evocative.

Matthew Perpetua (Matthew Perpetua), Monday, 15 December 2003 17:37 (twenty-two years ago)

I was just listening to the Mystic Tide...am I the only one who hears the vocal similarity to Jandek? Weird coincidence.

Sarah Pedal (call mr. lee), Monday, 15 December 2003 20:11 (twenty-two years ago)

can y'all make me care?

Haikunym (Haikunym), Monday, 15 December 2003 20:48 (twenty-two years ago)

You're missing some really great lyrics, and some of the creepiest/oddest stuff around.

Ian Johnson (orion), Tuesday, 16 December 2003 09:12 (twenty-two years ago)

i've just heard "i went to hell". i love it. it's probably the clearest sounding recording of his i've heard.

the surface noise (electricsound), Thursday, 18 December 2003 10:57 (twenty-two years ago)

who here saw the jandek movie, and what did you think?
douglas wolk, for one, is really great in it, methinks. (i'm sure he's not the only person on this list who appears in the movie, though...)

i liked it for sure, though it could have been shorter, and there were these ultra-ultra lame pan shots of, like, a telephone, and an image of a "lonely" motel room that really bummed me. but it's not like there was a lot of "exciting concert footage" to work with, okay. i just wish the "poetical" elements had reminded me less of the cymbal flying through the air that punctuates clint eastwood's charlier parker bio-pic...

yetimike (McGonigal), Thursday, 18 December 2003 11:07 (twenty-two years ago)

Forced exposure description of the new one is wrong: at least based on Matthew's MP3, it's voice and acoustic upright bass, not "acoustic guitar and electric bass duoes, with Jandek's vocals..." I also wonder if the doghouse survived the session, 'cause Sterling is smacking the living hell out of it.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 18 October 2004 13:04 (twenty-one years ago)

Jandeck played unannounced at Instal in Glasgow (see the Instal thread). Spoken word stuff with local musicians. Detuned guitar. Very difficult indeed. I think I'd need to hear some of his relatively straightforward stuff first.
So underground he started before the place had opened and was playing to the cleaners.

Stew S (stew s), Monday, 18 October 2004 13:18 (twenty-one years ago)

That Public Radio show, Studio 360, did a show about Outsider Art, with some good commentary on and brief excerpts of Jandek. You can prbably still hear it at studio360.org. Some of their shows try too hard, but worth checking out. Also their link to the Jandek site (tisue, already linked on this thread) led me to tisue's link to the Texas reporter Katy Vine's apparent social experience with the J.

don, Monday, 18 October 2004 14:48 (twenty-one years ago)

An update, linked from the tisue.net Jandek site:

>>i just got in from a day out at the instal 04 festival in glasgow where jandek played his first ( i presume ) performance alongside alexander neilson on drums and richard youngs on bass. i had no idea that jandek would be playing and it was quite a surprise. totally unexpected and i thought unfeasible that he would play with other musicians. but it somehow worked really well. they rehearsed beforehand, jandek played electric guitar. and when they finished he disappeared. i was moved to tears a few times. but intrigued and slightly spooked by it all. i have been listening to jandek for probably two years now, and have every cd apart from his latest one. i was surprised that his live performance was just like his cds. like, he's for real man.  i found him quite sinister or perhaps creepy, but i think creepy is too strong a word. he will issue the performance as an album on corwood apparently and also a dvd of the gig. he's also going to stay in touch with alex and richard and maybe play some more in the future.

Maybe it'll be announced next week that Jandek has signed to Drag City. A singing duet between Jennifer Herrema and Jandek would be something to behold.

However, I fail to see how the first Royal Trux album sounds very much like Jandek. Keiji Haino's first solo lp is much closer to Jandek than anything Royal Trux ever did.

Actual Jandek CDs on Corwood sell for $7 or $8. This guy is shilling his DVD for the full price of $19.95. Fuck that.

Lefty, Monday, 18 October 2004 18:24 (twenty-one years ago)

So this Jandek movie is just a money grab?

Mark (MarkR), Monday, 18 October 2004 18:30 (twenty-one years ago)

No, not a money grab. But my local art flicks DVD rental shop will get this title soon enough. I'll rent it, rip it, and burn my own DVD-R copy, thank you very much.

A Million Talking Hot Dogs (AaronHz), Monday, 18 October 2004 18:49 (twenty-one years ago)

that's actually one of the better parts of the movie...they do lots of those diffuse, spooky shots that (sometimes) actually recreate the photos on the album covers, using the same house, same angle etc...they even do some of the ones he did on his "trip to europe" covers.....they go to point judith too.

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Monday, 18 October 2004 18:52 (twenty-one years ago)

I live in the same town as the Jandek on Corwood producers and the movie is far from an attempted cash-in on Jandek. It's a great introduction to Jandek and most people who see the film and haven't heard a Jandek record usually end up buying one or more. The local indie shop in town has sold out of the entire Jandek catalog three times at this point, I think. I'm glad it's finally getting a dvd release.

Now that Smile has been released, can we now have "Jandek Presents Smile ... Live"?

Majooba, Monday, 18 October 2004 21:40 (twenty-one years ago)

Smile would be better without vocals. /offtopic..

I think Jandek performing live is really crazy. At least he did it in silence. I'm trying not to let it ruin the mystique for me.

Ian John50n (orion), Monday, 18 October 2004 21:44 (twenty-one years ago)

seth tisue raised an interesting point on Jandek-L:

There is one real disappointment about this for me, though, and it's
that Jandek is playing with established figures from the avant music
circuit rather than by himself or with the people who play on his
records. I think that getting mixed up in the world of endless
organizer-orchestrated matchups and collaborations is absolutely the
last thing he needs, musically, quite apart from any issues of image or
myth.

the surface noise (slight return) (electricsound), Monday, 18 October 2004 21:48 (twenty-one years ago)

Well, the man isn't some idiot savant, your retarded cousin, or some braindead burnout, ala Brian Wilson or Roky Erikson. I say Jandek can and should do whatever the hell he wants to do.

I think it's the patronizing attitude of so many Jandek fans that turn people off of the whole thing. Who is Seth to say what Jandek "needs" anyway?

Seth means well, and has promoted Jandek's career, I know, but doesn't his attitude come off as slightly more than condescending?

Majooba, Monday, 18 October 2004 21:56 (twenty-one years ago)

yes and no. i can't say i find the idea of a (just for argument's sake) nurse with wound/jandek collaboration to be at all appealing

EXPERIMENTAL MUSIC IS CONSUMER FRAUD

Ian John50n (orion), Monday, 18 October 2004 22:01 (twenty-one years ago)

I think this is great. It's what I've always expected and waited for Jandek to do. And it's reassuring to know that the man in the photos is, in fact, Jandek--I think it's more interesting to view Jandek as someone who is honest (though reluctant) in expressing his personality than, say, a Residents-esque novelty act. The entire spectrum of Jandek's career has been very personal, with his subtly revealing little puzzle pieces of his life. This is not necessarily out of character for him. I don't think he's ruining the "myth;" he's taking it a step further.

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Monday, 18 October 2004 22:36 (twenty-one years ago)

i'm waiting for suzy to turn up and tell us she's just had lunch with him and what a nice guy he is.

hahaha!

adam. (nordicskilla), Monday, 18 October 2004 22:45 (twenty-one years ago)

i think the OMGWTF reaction from the fans proves it was the right thing to do at the right time..

the surface noise (slight return) (electricsound), Monday, 18 October 2004 22:55 (twenty-one years ago)

Just because Jandek made one extremely low-profile stage appearance, I have no idea why so many are jumping to the conclusion that he'll now be touring, appearing on TV, working on collaborations with Nurse With Wound, selling his life story to People magazine, whatever.

It's probably more likely that he'll never make another public appearance again. Such an unexpected, fleeting gig adds to the mystique beautifully, I think. It's the most unimaginable thing Jandek could've done.

Plus, he does look way cool in those photos.

And I'd really like to see/hear a Jandek/Keiji Haino collaboration. They both played at the festival. I wonder if they were formally introduced to one another there?

Majooba, Monday, 18 October 2004 23:02 (twenty-one years ago)

i've read no reports from anyone who spoke to the man as yet.. i'd be interested to hear about personal impressions of him.

Re: My snide comments about pirating the "Jandek on Corwood" DVD.

Sorry, I just think that film is a piece of shit (and, in all actuality, I couldn't be bothered to rent it; one viewing of it was more than enough for me). Neither the filmmakers nor the Jandek "scholars" featured in the film have any interest in talking about THE ACTUAL FUCKING MUSIC. They only want to discuss the "mysterious legend of Jandek" and weave their nerdy Trekkie-like "myths".

Maybe some find a film like that entertaining, but it conveys absolutely nothing about the music. If this was a c or d thread, I'd vote it a complete dud.

Does anyone have the MP3's of the live performance? I hear they're available on soulseek but I don't have soulseek. :(
