i'd like to do a 'tunes of the year' poll now

is it worth it? let me work it (sorry, not eligible this year but you can pick it's younger copycat sister by all means)

if everyone mailed me their top 5 tunes of the year (don't have to have been released as singles but should've been from the last 12 months) i would be happy to collate a list and publish it on ILM

unless Tom was already planning to do one as with last year?

if not, get mailin' - would rather they were not posted here as it hates the fun perhaps

stevem (blueski), Monday, 22 December 2003 12:16 (twenty-one years ago)

If no-one posts here, your thread falls off the list..

1) House of...
2) Spitting Games
3) Don't look back into the sun
4) Hey Ya
5) 12:51

Blimey, straight off without going umm err...

mark grout (mark grout), Monday, 22 December 2003 12:20 (twenty-one years ago)

no don't post here! i'll just keep posting 'bump' to keep the thread up remind people

stevem (blueski), Monday, 22 December 2003 12:23 (twenty-one years ago)

i don't actually know who 'Spitting Games' or 'Don't Look Back Into The Sun' are by tho

stevem (blueski), Monday, 22 December 2003 12:24 (twenty-one years ago)

stevem (blueski), Monday, 22 December 2003 12:28 (twenty-one years ago)

to jog your memory

stevem (blueski), Monday, 22 December 2003 12:29 (twenty-one years ago)

Mine are totally not singles.

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Monday, 22 December 2003 12:30 (twenty-one years ago)

that's fine, album tracks, b-sides/bonus tracks, remixes, bootlegs, internet only songs are all allowed - my favourite single of the year was originally recorded in 2001 anyway

stevem (blueski), Monday, 22 December 2003 12:33 (twenty-one years ago)

Mad world?

mark grout (mark grout), Monday, 22 December 2003 12:38 (twenty-one years ago)

Speaking of which can we name one worst tune of the year too?

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Monday, 22 December 2003 12:39 (twenty-one years ago)

Five only is harshness indeed - have sent it now though!

(I was going to ask if live songs were allowed but the issue didn't come up in the end.)

The Lex (The Lex), Monday, 22 December 2003 12:40 (twenty-one years ago)

keep them coming folks so far i have mark grout, nick s, tom and alex mac's - long way to go, beyonce/girls aloud/dizzee tie first place so far. i hope 5 does allow enough variation, i'm thinking it will enough to compile a top 50 but we need everyone to submit their list and i fear some people are off this week and won't see this thread much until after the 25th.

closing date for submissions: Wednesday 30th December

stevem (blueski), Monday, 22 December 2003 12:49 (twenty-one years ago)

bump

stevem (blueski), Monday, 22 December 2003 14:16 (twenty-one years ago)

bump bump

i'll change my mind the minute i've posted this...

1. camera obscura - books written for girls
2. broadcast - winter now
3. mommy and daddy - together
4. bmx bandits - back in your arms
5. oh god this is too difficult, i'm going to think of LOTS soon after i've written this....

queens of the stone age - go with the flow (released on album last year, but as a single this year).

these aren't the BEST, just the ones i like right now.

also, surely an honourable christmas mention should go to 'have a cheeky christmastime'. could a christmas song be finer??

hobart paving (hobart paving), Monday, 22 December 2003 14:53 (twenty-one years ago)

'have a cheeky christmastime'

Who's that then?

xpost - mark, that IS them. in their full glory.

hobart paving (hobart paving), Monday, 22 December 2003 17:19 (twenty-one years ago)

Sonny A

ideally yes, as i may have to utilise a weighting system for tied songs

stevem (blueski), Monday, 22 December 2003 17:22 (twenty-one years ago)

steve, that other thread didn't help at all! (Interesting-sounding picks from Sami there tho'.)

my songs of the year list is 75 long and counting (even with a one song per artist rule!) but i'll mail you my top 5 in a minute

Jeff W (zebedee), Monday, 22 December 2003 17:34 (twenty-one years ago)

stevem (blueski), Sunday, 28 December 2003 14:56 (twenty-one years ago)

Baby show me, baby turn around and let me see that sexy body go bump bump bump...

JoB (JoB), Sunday, 28 December 2003 15:12 (twenty-one years ago)

1. OutKast - "Hey Ya!" (of course)
2. !!! - "Me and Giuliani Down By the Schoolyard (A True Story)"
3. The Black Keys - "Have Love Will Travel" (the version that John Peel played on his Festive Fifty. For some reason, it sounds much more lo-fi and cool than the album version. I don't know if it's just the crappy staticy signal I had or what but it sounds really cool.)
4. Sean Paul - "Get Busy"
5. Un-Cut - "Midnight"
6. Un-Cut - "Senseless"
7. King Missile - "The Miracle of Childbirth"
8. "Weird Al" Yankovic - "Bob"
9. Johnny Cash - "Personal Jesus"
10. Mogwai- "Hunted By a Freak"

Mr. Snrub (Mr. Snrub), Sunday, 28 December 2003 15:59 (twenty-one years ago)

'Hey Ya' is winning so far

stevem (blueski), Sunday, 28 December 2003 16:01 (twenty-one years ago)

Well I don't like that song.

Aja (aja), Sunday, 28 December 2003 16:03 (twenty-one years ago)

Diddums.

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Sunday, 28 December 2003 16:04 (twenty-one years ago)

What does that mean?

Aja (aja), Sunday, 28 December 2003 16:07 (twenty-one years ago)

It means "hard cheese".

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Sunday, 28 December 2003 16:16 (twenty-one years ago)

Aja e-mail me your own top 5

stevem (blueski), Sunday, 28 December 2003 16:24 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't think I have a top five, at least for this year.

Aja (aja), Sunday, 28 December 2003 16:25 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh shit, I just sent you a top 6 after after thought, and then changed my mind,,, version 2 is on its way,

Nik (Nik), Sunday, 28 December 2003 16:30 (twenty-one years ago)

Well I guess it would go like this:

1. "Low" Foo Fighters
2.?
3?
4?
5.?

I haven't really liked this year, music wise.

Aja (aja), Sunday, 28 December 2003 16:32 (twenty-one years ago)

No Killing Joke, Aja?

jaymc (jaymc), Sunday, 28 December 2003 16:37 (twenty-one years ago)

Well Oh Yeah! Ok!

But don't they only have one single out from the last record? Oh no. Alex where are you? I need help.

Aja (aja), Sunday, 28 December 2003 16:38 (twenty-one years ago)

Wait, does it have to be a single from this year?

Aja (aja), Sunday, 28 December 2003 16:39 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh boy, well, here's how I'm feeling this very second:
Beat Your Heart Out - Distillers
Crazy In Love - Beyonce
Smoke Rings - the Shocker
Gender Bombs - the Stills
Sinkhole - Drive-By Truckers

Jeanne Fury (Jeanne Fury), Sunday, 28 December 2003 16:42 (twenty-one years ago)

I also can't stand Beyonce.

Aja (aja), Sunday, 28 December 2003 16:44 (twenty-one years ago)

it must be a single released this year or a track released this year in some other way (on an album, a b-side, internet only track, bootleg, remix etc.)

stevem (blueski), Sunday, 28 December 2003 16:45 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm going to try for a top five.

"Asteriod" Killing Joke
"Blood on Your Hands"
"Low" Foo Fighters
"Death and Reserection Show" Killing Joke
"Implant"/"Seeing Red" (I can't choose)

Aja (aja), Sunday, 28 December 2003 16:48 (twenty-one years ago)

1/ No letting go - Wayne Wonder
2/ Tings in boots - Ruff Squad
3/ Growing on me - The Darkness
4/ Ignition (remix) - R Kelly

Sarah (starry), Monday, 5 January 2004 15:41 (twenty-one years ago)

ILM top 10 singles of 2003

01. Outkast 'Hey Ya' (31 pts)
02. Girls Aloud 'No Good Advice' (26)
03. R Kelly 'Ignition Remix' (24)
04. Beyonce ft Jay-Z 'Crazy In Love' (20)
05. Dizzee Rascal 'I Luv U' (17)
06. Lumidee 'Never Leave You' (15)
07. Kelis 'Milkshake' (13)
08. Basement Jaxx 'Good Luck' (10)
09. !!! 'Me And Giuliani Down By The Schoolyard (A True Story)' (9)
10. 50 Cent 'In Da Club' (9)

actually a great chart and very indicative of mass ILM taste despite disappointing voter turn out. points awarded thus:

1 = 5 pts
2 = 4 pts
3 = 3 pts
4 = 2 pts
5 = 1 pt

thanks to all who voted. in hindsight asking for top tens rather than top fives may have been better, but buggered if i was gonna tot up all the scores for that many more nominations (actually i probably would've, oh well)

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 7 January 2004 17:52 (twenty-one years ago)

just outside: Wayne Wonder, LCD Soundsystem and Lil Jon

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 7 January 2004 17:53 (twenty-one years ago)

and to think, this means that SJAB will stay at #11:(

gareth (gareth), Wednesday, 7 January 2004 17:53 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah only one in that lot I don't like. Good work ILM, now please for the love of god nobody count up the albums.

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Wednesday, 7 January 2004 18:01 (twenty-one years ago)

Steve can you list all the songs that only got one mention or would that be hard work.

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Wednesday, 7 January 2004 18:02 (twenty-one years ago)

you can get the xls doc here to see all the votes

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 7 January 2004 18:07 (twenty-one years ago)

oi! where are my songs?
good list, tho!

Jay Kid (Jay K), Wednesday, 7 January 2004 18:16 (twenty-one years ago)

hmmm, yours should be in there - most likely they got deleted from that spreadsheet but they were included (esp. if you voted for anything that someone else voted for) - same goes for Aja and there may be a couple more missing

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 7 January 2004 18:24 (twenty-one years ago)

I saw Jay Kid's on the spreadsheet!

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Wednesday, 7 January 2004 18:26 (twenty-one years ago)

Great list... you could've predicted every song on it beforehand, and I like that. Only one song I don't like, too! ("Snake" >>>>>>>>>> "Ignition")

The Lex (The Lex), Wednesday, 7 January 2004 18:53 (twenty-one years ago)

Good showing from Lumidee, probably the suprise of that list, if there is one; it didn't make it into many other lists (apart from mine obviously).

Shock lack of Missy for the first time for ages.

Nick H (Nick H), Wednesday, 7 January 2004 19:15 (twenty-one years ago)

I saw Jay Kid's on the spreadsheet!
You must have the eyes of an eagle!

Jay Kid (Jay K), Thursday, 8 January 2004 10:09 (twenty-one years ago)

"House of Jealous Lovers" only got one vote? (being mine?) - sheesh...

mark grout (mark grout), Thursday, 8 January 2004 10:16 (twenty-one years ago)

it would've got a lot more in 2002

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 8 January 2004 10:40 (twenty-one years ago)

I know, I know. but I didn't get to hear it until June I think, like most people...

mark grout (mark grout), Thursday, 8 January 2004 10:41 (twenty-one years ago)

really? most people? hmm

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 8 January 2004 12:08 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah, most people.

mark grout (mark grout), Thursday, 8 January 2004 12:10 (twenty-one years ago)

I really should've voted for "Bombs over Baghdad" instead of "Might Getcha"

michael b, Thursday, 8 January 2004 12:35 (twenty-one years ago)

I put Bombs Over Baghdad in my VV poll because i) it's good and ii) I like the idea of a podgy old German dancehall geezer getting lots of votes.

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Thursday, 8 January 2004 12:36 (twenty-one years ago)

Why no votes for Scooter then? They've got three podgy old German geezers!

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Thursday, 8 January 2004 12:43 (twenty-one years ago)

I tried to get Scooter in last year and no luck - this time though the podgy German geezer massive will surely not be silenced.

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Thursday, 8 January 2004 12:48 (twenty-one years ago)

we have ways of making them not talk
